chris sewell here baseball card collector investor dealer in that order welcome everyone today we're going to count down the 20 most valuable baseball cards from the 1960s like the 70s list i did recently this is actually a remake because i made a 60s countdown video about 18 months ago or so but i just saw it again recently and not surprisingly the prices were wildly out of date so time for a redo or an overhaul here there are definitely some surprises in the top 20 this time around as you will see and of course the big question everyone is wondering is where will ken mcmullen land rules for this list are we going to use the average of recent sales in a psa 7 to determine the ranking but i'll show the value of the card in a number of different grades each player can only appear once otherwise this list would be dominated by just a few a few players and top space sets only so no you know oddball stuff so with all that in mind let's get started opening up the list at number 20 is a card from the first of five pitchers who will appear steve carlton the first pitcher to win for sai young awards so you're looking at his 1967 68 and 69 tops cards there the 67 on the left is his first card in the hobby where he appears alone his rookie card is 1965 tops which he shares with fritz ackerly and you'll see a number of cards on this list with with multiple players the carlton rookie in a psa seven currently sells for about four hundred dollars and as you can see psa nine is going for about seven times that going from a seven to a nine in the 1960s usually comes with a big multiplier as psa 9s become extremely rare when you get back into the 1960s the all-time record sale of the card in any grade was a psa 10 going for 83 grand this past november the psa 10 is a pop seven up next to number 19 is a card from bob gibson whose rookie is actually not in the 1960s as rookie cards 1959 so but the three that you're looking at there are 1960 64 and 68 tops the 60 on the left is his second year card gibson posted an era of 112 in 1968 that is a feat that has not been matched since his most valuable card from the 60s is actually his 1962 tops it's in the high number series and many of the sets from the 1960s have high number series that are a lot rare and therefore the cards are a lot more valuable and here's a good example of that with a psa sevens going for about 439 dollars three straight pictures to open up the list at number 18 is sandy kofax who realistically was the most popular pitcher in the 1960s from a card collecting standpoint but as rookie cards from 1955 so these cards are from later in his career you're looking at a 61.65 and the 1966 on the right is actually his final card in the hobby his most valuable card from the 60s is the 1963 tops card 63 along with 62s often are a little more condition sensitive than others because of the you know in this case the bottom bordered the bottom colored borders more susceptible to chipping at the corners psa sevens currently go for about five hundred and thirty seven dollars and the all-time record sale is a psa nine there's never been a sale of a psa 10. number 17 is one you may not be expecting but it's a card of bob euchre who did not have a particularly impressive career in the majors but went on to be a famous broadcaster and later a famous comedic actor starring in some sitcoms and also in movies and including in major league in which he has one of my favorite movie lines of all time vaughn into the wind up in his first offering just a bit outside he tried to corner and missed the three cards there is 1963 1964 and 1965 tops but his most valuable valuable by far is his 1962 tops in which he appears on a rookie parade card that features five players he is the the star value of this card here it also is in the high number set so the this card has a lot of things going for it 560 current going rate for a psa 7 and a psa 9 recently fetched 22 grand number 16 is someone who seems like he should be higher on the list in fact he finished number one on the uh on the early 70s list i did recently it's a card of roberto clemente uh bob clemente as he's shown on his 1960s tops guards which seems kind of silly as i've never once heard anyone refer to him as bob in my many years in uh you know following baseball in in the card hobby but 1960 top 65 tops and 67 tops there one of the most popular players of all time uh finished with uh 3 000 hits exactly and and tragically passed away in a plane crash while he was still still active his most valuable card from the 60s is his 1963 tops that also appears in the high number series and again a condition sensitive card often coming with surface issues and and corner dings down at the bottom in particular psa sevens going for just short of six hundred dollars uh today number fifteen is the human vacuum cleaner brooks robinson superstar third baseman for the baltimore orioles and he was my boy cal ripken's hero growing up so brooks robinson is all right with me 1961 top 63 tops and 66 tops are the three cards you're looking at there his most valuable card from the 60s is 1967 tops it's a super short print card already in the really tough high number series you can see card number 600 in the set so that's in the high number series and again super short print one of the one of the sort of the rarest base cards in all of the 1960s psa sevens currently going for about six hundred and thirty two dollars number fourteen is a hall of fame slugging first baseman for the pittsburgh pirates willie stargell and you're looking at his 1964 65 and 69 tops the 64 tops on the left is his first card in the hobby where he is all alone as his rookie card is 1963 tops which he shares with three other guys in the floating heads format psa 7 is going for 645 today this is also in the high number series so it gets a boost there and this card has really shot way up in the last you know few years with look at that psa 10 sale recently 63 grand back in may number 13 is a card from lou brock who retired as the all-time leader in career stolen bases and actually still ranks second all time today behind only ricky henderson he started off his career with the cubs you can see his 1963 tops on the left and then played most of his career with the cardinal 65 and 66 in the middle and on the right his most valuable card is his rookie it's from 1962 gets a added boost because it's in the condition sensitive set psa 7 is going for uh 738 dollars as of this recording next up is uh who some would say is the greatest catcher of all time he's certainly in that discussion johnny bench who played his entire career with the big red machine and won a bunch of world series with the reds couple mvp awards as well rookie card is on the left he shares it with ron thompson ron tompkins that's 1968. he's 1969 tops in the middle with the all rookie trophy as his first card alone in 69 all-star on the right the rookie card is of course the most valuable psa 7 is going for about 743 today and uh all-time record sale this card has fetched into six figures 108 000 that was back in the summer of 2021. number 11 is a member of the elusive 500 home run club willie mccovey a slugging first baseman for the giants is 61 62 and 68 tops cards there are on the screen 62 in the middle is actually in the high number series a really really tough short print it actually was almost the most valuable of his cards from the 60s but it is out valued by his rookie card from 1960. uh psa 7 is going for about 759 today look at the psa five value there 185 dollars for a a you know a mid-grade copy of this rookie card of all-time great that's now you know 60 years old i'd call that one of the better bargains uh bargains on here at the moment next up is someone who you know like clemente is someone if you think of the 1960s you would you would imagine him being higher on the list but hank aaron's rookie is from 1954 so the 60s cards are sort of in the middle of his career those are the 61 the 64 and the 68 tops there uh hank aaron retired as the all-time you know leader in career home run still ranks second all-time today pretty uh pretty incredible given that he retired you know whatever it was 50 40 50 years ago or so his most valuable card from the 1960s is the 1960 tops with psa sevens uh approaching nine hundred dollars and look at the psa nine values 90 grand for a psa 9 copy of this card does not exist in a psa 10. coming in at number nine is a card of roger maris who played most of his career with the new york yankees finished it up with the uh the cardinals there on the right in his 1968 tops is 1960 and 61 are on the left and in the middle the most valuable card he's got from this decade is the 1962 tops which has a lot of things going for it first of all condition sensitive set to begin with it's also card number one in the set which adds a lot of condition issues and then on top of that the 1961 season is one of the most significant in baseball history as roger maris and mickey mantle were both chasing the single season home run record and roger mares ultimately ultimately got it with 61 home runs surpassing the babes babe ruth's 60 total from 1927 so that's a record that you know had stood for close to 40 years and then roger marissa's record stood for another close to you know 40 years until uh mark maguire finally finally broke it in the late 90s yeah psa seven copies of this card currently going for eight hundred and eighty one dollars number eight is the boston red sox great carl ustremski who has one of the hardest last names to spell in all the sport there is an strz in consecutive order that doesn't seem right but indeed it is 1961 63 and 69 tops there the 61 on the left says rookie but it's actually not it's actually his second year card and his uh his rookie card is the year before obviously 1960 tops with psa sevens going for a little over nine hundred dollars and again look at that psa five value three hundred dollars for a psa five that strikes me as a you know a good price to pay for a 60 year old you know hall of fame rookie card in solid mid-grade number seven is mr october reggie jackson whose rookie card is from 1969 so this is his only card from the 1960s uh reggie jackson's another member of the 500 home run club is actually one of five members to appear on this list his rookie card in a psa seven goes for just short of a thousand dollars and looking look at that jaw dropping sale of a psa 10 which went about a year ago for into seven figures one million and change uh this is one of the rare occasions where it sort of makes sense to call five thousand dollars change number six i got mad hits like rod carew 1968 on the left 68 all-star in the middle and 69 on the right i think they use the same photo for the 68 and the 69s on the left and right there tops getting a little bit lazy with their photo selections the one on the left is his first card where he appears all alone it says all-star rookie but it's actually his second year card as his rookie is from 1967 tops and it's in the 67 high number series a really really tough series to begin with psa uh seven is going for into four figures one thousand two hundred dollars uh for a psa seven uh today number five is the say hey kit a staple of the 1960's willie mays 1961 63 and 67 tops you can see in the 60s they didn't use in action shots yet i think in action started in 1971 there might have been a few scattered in before that but for the most part it's all profiles and and poses his most valuable card from the era is the 1962 tops again 62 top sort of appears a little more than you might think simply because the the condition sensitive corners and edges psa seven is currently going for about one thousand three hundred dollars and we're now down to the final four and uh there's two pitchers an outfielder and an infielder left if anyone's trying to guess ahead of time number four is tom terrific tom seaver uh 1968 and 1969 tops there and like the rod crew you know i think they use the same photo for both the 68 and 69 maybe tops was sort of short on photographers in 1969. uh the 68 on the left has the all-star rookie and that's also his first card where he appears all alone as his rookie card is the year earlier 1967 tops and like the rod crew it's in the very very tough uh high number series from 1967. psa 7 is going for over 2 000 today and look at the the psa 10 that sold back in april for 344 grand coming in with our bronze medal at number three is mickey mantle and if we allowed duplicate players to appear on the list mantle would have taken eight of the top 20 spots as he is he is the king of the 1960s and the 1950s baseball cards for for that matter his 1960 65 and 69 tops there the 69 on the right is actually his last card in in the hobby his most valuable card from the decade is again the 1962 tops again the the borders are condition sensitive giving it a boost in sort of mid and higher grade psa 7 is going for 2 800 today and psa 9's you can see will cost you multiple six figures uh no psa tens exist of this card number two like tom sever another starting pitcher for the 1969 miracle mets nolan ryan and that is his 1969 tops card there it's his second card in the hobby and it's also the first card where he appears all alone ryan's the all-time leader in career strikeouts and he's certainly the most popular pitcher in the 1970s at least uh in the baseball card world his rookie card from 1968 is one of the most iconic in all the hobby he actually shares it with jerry kuzma who had a very solid career himself but nolan ryan is the driver of the value here psa 7 is going for a little under 3 grand psa 5 will cost you just over uh one grand and you can see a psa 10 sold for well over a half million dollars about six years ago that would certainly fetch well into seven figures today as it is a pop one and number one ken mcmullen does indeed take the top spot but he shares the card with pete rose who is the all-time career hits leader retired in 1986 and still owns that record pretty incredible some 35 years later 64 65 and 67 tops there played most of his career with the cincinnati reds and the big red machine but uh played played some seasons with the phillies towards the end as well his 64 on the left is his second year card in the hobby and you can see it says the all-star rookie trophy but his rookie card is from 1963 tops the floating heads and he shares it with ken mcmullen and two others psa seven's currently going for four thousand five hundred dollars and uh look at the psa 10 717 grand that was back in 2016 some six years ago today if that was put up for sale it would certainly fetch seven figures and probably probably multiple seven figures so that's your top 20 here's some list tidbits for those of you who like tidbits there were 12 rookie cards included in the top 20 and eight of them featured multiple players that's obviously a staple of the 1960s and look at that last one there were 17 hall of fame rookie cards that were not included in the top 20 couldn't even make the cut that gives you a sense for how much sort of you know star power there was in the 1960s here are the 17 uh these are all hall of famers and these are all rookie cards and none of these could crack the uh could crack the top 20 some you know big names here jim cotton tony oliva just made the hall of fame recently joe morgan's on there all time you know maybe the best second baseman of all time and a bunch of other all-time greats but the rookie cards could not crack the top 20. got a trivia question for anyone who wants it it is uh who are the only two on this list who are not in the hall of fame obviously not counting you know the secondary guys on some of the the multiple player cards but uh here are the 20 cards so you can take a look and try to figure it out you can leave your answers in the comments and i'll uh let you know if you if you got it right but that's it thank you everyone for watching and hope you enjoyed i will do a 1950s list like this at some point in the near future so look out for that if you if you like this one and see you again real soon thanks everyone
