Attorney General Ken Paxton suing Harris County over its guaranteed income program calling it a welfare scheme. The program is similar to the one that Austin did in recent years. The program is called Uplift Harris and it gives eligible households in the county $500 a month for 18 months, nearly 2000 households are getting the money that money comes from the Federal American Rescue Plan Act. The attorney general says it violates the Texas Constitution article three section 52 forbids any county city, town or other political corporation or subdivision of the state to grant public money or thing of value and aid to any individual. Harris County attorney Christian Min. He called the lawsuit disheartening. I think it's a sad day in the state of Texas when politicians will step in to block people from getting access to government. Harris county attorney says its program is legal until the judge says otherwise, Austin had that guaranteed income pilot program that gave 100 and 35 households 1000 bucks a month for a year. The city worked with a nonprofit to distribute that money. Austin wants to bring the program back soon to support 85 families. We'll see if the courts have anything to say about that.
