a tomahawk agree finally I've got around looking at a tomahawk of all of the thousands of thousands of her requests that I have received over the years not once have I ever had anything to do with a tomahawk actually I wasn't all that interested primarily because I didn't really know anything about them and I've been at Naville actually never used one or had one so I found this one as I was going through looking for interesting finds on Amazon I came across this and it really appealed to me because of the price and the other thing was that it's hand forged and it truly is hand forged it is what was this $24 on Amazon for a hand forged they're marketing it as a throwing Hawk now I have read a little bit about tomahawks and of course you know they were used heavily by Native Americans and sorts of tribal peoples I guess I'm not the expert on them but a lot of people really enjoy using them for competition and for throwing so we'll try that out so we need to do a few things to modify this because although it is a good deal and although it is hand forged it has some very very rough edges literally so let's take a look that's ahead all right so we can see obviously focus let's bring your focus up here in a focus all right let's bring you up here on the head and we can see no question that it certainly has been hand forged pretty nice job actually Nami for for what we're looking I mean what does a hand forge tool cost you know I mean you're talking about a lot of labor and time now not everything is perfect we can see right here where the welding was done you know it's not ideal there's a few grinding marks on there but overall it actually it looks pretty good to me I mean that eye is really nice in uniform I love the shape of it I love the weight of it it's just a really nice little it's a pleasing shape it gives me that it gives me the fizz it gives me that same kind of feeling I get from the grin forsberg small forest sex which I love so much and I think I just like lightweight axes so let's take a look at the edge I have never in my life so you know what a worse edge than that they didn't even try that's actually flat right there if you can see it it's only got a little I mean there is no there is no edge on that whatsoever it is absolutely flat but we can quit we can take care of that we'll put a quick edge on it and it'll be hair shaving sharp I have no doubt that's it a handle one of the cool things about the tomahawk of course is that slip through design that's really nice if you like to do butch crafting or packing that's an easy thing to pack you kind of slip them out you can put them in a very small area some unlined axes you know they're kind of different that way and also very easy to make a new handle if you happen to need one in the field but of course anyone can make a handle with any night anything that you have on hand now how is this handle well it's not great you know I mean it's it's it's certainly let's see you can certainly it's got kind of a strange teardrop shape on it which I don't mind that's fine it's got a good nice flare and taper on it focus challenging this so I don't mind it too bad it's just obviously it was put together very quick you mean $24 you don't have a lot of man-hours to spend on something like this but the biggest issues of course here are the fit right there you can see ok so you see the gap there between it not bet on the sides and if we flip it over what can we see there same thing we can see kind of a bit crude around the edges but again a tomahawk head doesn't have to fit perfect you know it's on a wedge lock so but we can fix that so I think with a rasp and just took just a minute or two we can improve upon this greatly because we do have plenty of material that's swelled out there on the head to give us a room so let's do this let's put a quick edge on it let's touch up that handle a little bit then let's take it outside and see how it stacks up not another sharpening video I can hear the keyboard clicking going right on just remember you know there's a lot of new people here and I don't just make videos for you we're just going to cover it very briefly for the new guys belt sander is a good way I've got a lot of videos on it but we'll just jump into it we'll just kind of hit the high points so that's the initial grind on the 36 grit there that doesn't take very long right there so I backed that up there you know tomahawks made for scalping folk you need to have it that relief edge backed up there and nice and sharp it's a warfighting tool right and then what we're told all right so let's finish it up with a 150 thought you might like to see the difference between the 150 and the 36th grit here you can see is the 150 and here you can see is the 36th grit you can you see how coarse rough that is of course we'll finish it by hand but that's a pretty good start right there it looks really good this is going to be sharp now let's hit over to the sharpening cabinet here and we'll finish it off by hand and this will really do the trick so very quickly we'll just finish off with waterstones by hand will just go coarse EDM fine so that really didn't take much 5 minutes or so of sharpening and we have a wickedly sharp little edge right there that is nice that came out nice pretty decent like decent steel a reasonably easy to sharpen it's actually very hard very hard steel so we'll see how that comes out when we go to the throwing so let's turn our attention now to the handle now this little handle should be a very easy fix I know exactly what it needs and it just needs a little material taken off the side so of course best tool for this is the four and hand the little four four position rasp if I could only have one tool for doing this little handle work this would be it so we can see there where we're pressing so things of that off I'm like access these are really this type of slip-on head is very easy to make a hand before it's a good place to start if you wanted to get into making your own tool handles so the process is is just kind of knock it down and then when you remove this the head you'll see the rub marks on there you can see right there where they're coming into contact with you just take your rasp and you knock those off so it's there and keep going until you have a good context all the way across and I think we're really good that should be a so let's see how we did oops so I have never thrown a tomahawk before so I have no idea what to expect but I'm thinking that this could be a really great picnic picnic activity you know since this Health and Safety people took away our yard darts maybe we can get one over on them and have the bring back to tomahawk through for family barbecues all right let's see how it goes here first time I could get into this maybe we should make a fire would Brown target that was the fifth row every time I throw at it stuck let's go for six and then we'll know it's legit yeah that's pretty fun actually I like that I like that a lot let's see how it fares on this maple we got a maple it's probably about an inch and a quarter in diameter boy I do like that I do like that you know what there's a kind of it there's a thing with axes and I there's kind of two schools of thinking there's the the idea that that you want a heavy axe because the heavy axe of course goes in and carries a lot of weight problem too heavy axe especially for people who have not swung axes a lot is that you don't get that debt blade speed and and sometimes and I prefer this I prefer a lighter axe is really sharp that you can swing very fast like that see how quickly that's a pretty that's maple that's pretty hard and to be able to to cut that down is uh is pretty good that's actually really really nice here's a little Doug Fir branch it's coming off there you know for going along in your forest after you've cleared it just knocking little things off cleanly is that's that's a pretty that's a pretty handy little tool for that this type of thing is where I think it would be really handy where we got a lot of this is a maple some brush look at that to be able to go along and very simply and cleanly cut this stuff off it really seems to work good for that although it certainly doesn't have the power of a of an axe it does offer something else that I think would be really nice so the fact that the shape of it that kind of having that that bearded shape makes it would make it a really good hand cart tool for doing hand carving things and you could even you know take off the handle and now you have a really you know easy to hold pleasing little almost like a little carving tool that you could do detail work and not be encumbered by the handle I could see the advantage of that you know making 10 steaks or Spears or sticks or cooking utensils or just a great number of things and then you have that versatility of putting the handle on it for heavier duty stuff but yeah looks really good check out the blade so Jack and I threw it many times I hit the ground a few times and yet I see no dings no chips I still we still have a razor-sharp edge even though it was in the dirt a few times did a fair amount of chopping and that's a pretty good decent quality steel right there I don't have any issue with that whatsoever so what's my conclusion of the cheapest tomahawk on Amazon I have to say I'm pleasantly I'm really pleasantly surprised I had I didn't have any expectations when I took it out of the box and I saw the crude handle and the fact the definite John and I was thinking I don't know about this thing but I I've warmed up to it I think it's just delightful I really like it so I know there's a lot of people that don't well there's not a lot there's a few there's a few outspoken folks that have not really enjoyed the Amazon looking you know finding strange and interesting cheap budget tools on Amazon and that's fine I'm enjoy enjoy doing it and they're really really popular I've gotten a lot of feedback and people are really enjoying them so I'll continue to do them when I find interesting things that they're just fun to do and a lot a lot of people enjoy it so if you don't like that sort of thing just you can skip those videos they'll be clearly labeled and you can go on will be of course always doing our homesteading videos as well but yeah I like it so I'll put a link to this and the subject as well as I'll put in the comments so I think it was 24 like $24.99 Amazon Prime free shipped and for the little hand forged tomahawk I'd say that that gets a thumbs up for me so thanks for watching and we'll see you guys on the next video cameo huh what are you doing here you want throw it let's go through ten right here okay some wearing foot boxes which aren't exactly that greatest thing for throwing some Hawks are they that's alright are you best Oh helps hit the tree drag it flip-flops where'd you get flip-flops should have consulted me should have consulted me don't know that that constitutes manly Footwear I agree there can I give you a pointer sure hit the tree yes I hit the tree and so it's kind of a it's a lob to lob and just let it fall out of your hand a nice big kind of a slow throw yeah nice sweep not bad for your second throw so easy a boy could do it how about that I think we should maybe fire up the forge and make a make it half a dozen to these things and and have a little competition here with the local folk when that'd be fun we can even have different different differences taking the way checking the song rocks at them no I don't think we should throw each

I'd like to see him do more with these things before he sharpens and tunes them.
