all right guys welcome back to the channel i know i have a lot of people that have subscribed to this channel that are newer to fishing or newer to fly fishing and i oftentimes get a lot of questions about gear that i use uh what i should recommend for you know a specific rod or a reel what i want to try to do is to find a cheap fly fishing combo for you guys or just just for entertainment purposes for me to try out and we're just going to go on amazon try to find a kit that's ready to go with the rod reel line everything uh it might be garbage it might be good uh we're gonna try to do our best to try to pick one that's within our price range and still seems to be decent quality and something that you can grow with as an angler by no means you have to spend a lot of money on a fly fishing outfit to have fun and catch fish so let's go up into the office see what we can find for a combo and get that thing ordered all right guys so we're up here in the office we're going to try to find the rod that we're going to use for this video um i want to keep it under 100 bucks i mean we're talking complete kit that's what i want so a case rod reel line backing maybe some flies whatever else will come with it but we want the whole thing so all we got to do is get this kit and just start fishing we don't have to mess with anything i want to try to find like a six weight or five weight it's uh more geared toward trout fishing and uh we'll just see what we can find on here for a good deal fly rod and reel come oh here we go 50 to 100 let's try that okay so amazon's choice right here is this wild water fly fishing nine foot four piece five six weight complete your fishing rocket so it comes with a case some flies nippers zinger reel with line and backing i want to see if we can get cheaper than that i can't tell really what the reel is made out of but die cast aluminum this drag that reel actually looks like machined aluminum what's this say the real fly rail is made of cnc machined aluminum well that's pretty cool because that usually you gotta spend some bucks to get a machined reel all right this is 89.98 not that much cheaper than the other one but uh let's see it's a five six weight it's a medium fast action that's all right nine foot four piece five year service if any problem okay all right so we'll keep an eye on that one i kind of like that one it's got a nice reel with it um nice carrying case i'm sure it's got crappy line and backing and flies there's a fluger kit which probably isn't all that horrible uh i don't know see this is a this is a eight foot three piece i want to go with a more traditional like nine foot five or six weight fly rod like a legit fly rod would be cortland i think that's the one you can get at walmart actually i've checked this one out in walmart before it's probably not a bad deal it's a plastic reel though but it is cheaper but i would think if it were me and i was picking out my first fly rod on amazon and that i didn't want to spend much money on i would want to get the best quality that i could get some reason that one's just really jumping out at me here i think this one's a little bit better quality and it could be wrong but we're gonna review it when we get it one fly box with 12 flies spare leader zinger nipper carry case yeah check out this real seat so it's a nice machined reel seat with dual locking rings on there and then if you look at the the grip it's cork i don't know how high quality cork it is but it's got uh sort of this like synthetic cork on the on the top and bottom which is usually a little more tacky than the cork is so that's kind of cool it kind of looks a little bit better quality especially with the machined reel so i think we're going to go with this one all right let's just check the reviews real quick should have bought this earlier someone said outstanding customer service great buy great customer service great value for an entry level fly fishing combo all right that's all i need to confirm this let's do this let's pull the trigger on this thing get it here all right guys so we went ahead and pulled the trigger on that rod it's gonna come in in probably i don't know a week or so and uh it'll only be a couple seconds for you so we'll cut over to when we get the rod right now all right guys so the package has arrived it came last night so uh let's just dive into this thing and see what this rod looks like i'm kind of excited to so see see here we go this is it the sega lang fly fishing combo not sure if that's how you pronounce it don't really care let's link down the description below if you want to find this exact rod and reel combo but let's open it up let's see so it's got a nice case here oh let's see what's this fly fishing starter guide it comes with i hope we don't need that because you had to spool it up with backing fly line tip it until it even tells you how to cast tells you some fly patterns how to tie them oh proper fish handling so yeah this this actually may be pretty good for someone just starting out fishing fly fishing um yeah all right so here's the rod case it's uh it's all right it's a rod case nothing too crazy about it it feels like it might be padded a little bit um hoping everything else is in here okay yep all right here we go so we got some backing 100 yards of 20 pound backing that looks all right that'll work for sure um looks like we got a tapered leader nine foot 5x tapered leader so it comes with one leader the loop connector which i've actually never used one of these before not sure if we will or not but maybe i'll try it just because it came with the kit that's uh that's just to put a loop in the end of your fly line to hook your your tippets and leaders too uh here is the fly line this is what i was kind of curious about i want to see how bad this was going to be 100 foot six weight floating line i don't know we'll check that out in a little bit more detail once we get it on it is at least tapered so it's not just a straight fly line but um give you a little fly box here it's a pretty cheap fly box not gonna lie but it'll work um it's got some pretty cruddy flies in there probably catch some fish on it but uh the foam actually doesn't even have slits in it that you stick the flies in you kind of got it buried in the foam which is fine it'll work for for just starting out give you a nice little selection it does have a magnetic closure it doesn't feel too durable but hey it's just a fly box looks like we got a little zinger with some nippers on there which you're definitely going to need if you're fly fishing they don't look too bad all they're going to be able to do is cut some line cut your tag ends off and oh it actually has a little a little point on the end there for getting the glue out of some of the fly some of the eyes on the fly so uh that's a good little feature to have on there keep in mind all this stuff came with this pack for what like 85 bucks or something like that maybe a little bit less um here's what i was most interested in as you guys remember when we were picking this rod out it's the reel looks legit it looks actually pretty good but we will find out very soon let's see so it's set up right handed which is good that's how i reel that's kind of interesting so that here's the drag sound and it's in like free spool in the when you're reeling it really really loose sort of but the reel feels tight it's just i don't know probably not a big deal drag feels all right actually the drag feels pretty dang good wow yeah nice machined aluminum looks pretty cool looks like we've got a shoulder strap for the bag and finally the rod which comes in a rod sock here all right here we go moment of truth let's pull the butt section out so here it is here's the uh here's the butt section here you got a nice aluminum reel seat with the dual locking rings you got what appears to be an okay cork the actual cork material doesn't look like it's that high quality but it does have this uh other cork on the on the top and bottom here which is a little bit better cork material nice little hook keeper there the model and everything and what i just noticed was that it has alignment dots which is pretty good if you have a four piece rod alignment dots are are usually pretty helpful but i don't know how good these are they look like they're just kind of stuck on there so the one on the top of this is completely gone so well most of the dots are there it doesn't feel too bad in the hand i prefer a little bit different shaped handle than that but it does feel pretty comfortable and for a beginner rod or your first fly rod that'd work pretty good so let's go see if we can cool this up real quick and this is reversible all you have to do if you want if you're a left-hand retrieve you can take this out flip the bearing around and it's left hand retrieved so works for everybody yeah it's not great it's kind of jumpy kind of jumpy see how that kind of jumps like that all right so now we gotta hook our fly line on uh ran into another problem um it's very fixable but the spool is filled completely to the brim right now with fly line i can't put any more on and we still have a handful of line left to go on there which is not good um we can obviously fix it but you always want to have enough room for air here between this little this little support piece on the spool so when you're fighting a fish or reeling up line you don't have to really manage it that much so it doesn't pinch in there so we want a nice size gap in between there and right now we definitely don't have that so unfortunately what we're going to do is take all the line back off and either remove some of the uh yellow backing there so we can get all of this line on there or shorten up our fly line some which i might do a little bit of both actually i might take out some backing and then chop this fly line down we're going to cut the end of it that's nail knotted to our our backing because we probably won't ever use that as far as casting we want to be able to have the head of this line intact we don't want to cut that at all so let's strip all this off cut some line off and try to get it all to fit on the spool all right so i got that figured out i had to cut quite a bit of line out but that's what we got for a gap in there right now just enough so if we have a little bit of stacking going on when we're reeling in a fish or trying to pick up our line it doesn't pinch too bad so i took like six and a half seven yards of the green fly line off from the end of the line there and as far as the backing i don't even know i probably got maybe 60 70 yards left on the spool the backing is just above the openings there so you can just kind of see it so so that's all the line that we had to cut off from there just to fit that on the spool see how this is going to work i have no idea how to use this so i guess that was pretty easy i don't know if i did it right or not but i just threaded that thing on there and it's like a chinese finger trap it just tightens down i slid that plastic tubing over the end of it so it doesn't fray all right so we got the rod outside just realized the alignment dots are pretty much useless on this rod because see here dots are aligned this eye the eyelets are the eyelets are in line but not in line with the dots so you can't go by the alignment dots if i were to line it up by my own site this is what the alignment dots would look like you don't need alignment dots anyways it's just kind of a convenience thing so i want to get some time into this and see if i can get used to a little bit and just kind of see how this thing works when we take it to battle so let's go see what we can hook up on [Applause] i think what i'm going to do first is i probably won't really have any action with it but i want to cast a dry fly with this first and that's just because that's going to be the easiest thing to cast with this every 9 foot 5 weight should be able to cast a dry fly perfectly have some really good drifts with it land nice and soft on the water so we're just gonna test that you know if someone bought this as a new fly angler that's probably that's probably going to be what they're going to fish the most anyways the dry fly but i want to see how good this rod is all around so we're going to throw streamers probably nymph rig and just see how it casts those all right let's try this oh yeah i actually like that just get a couple decent gas here that guy's pretty good over you can get over on the other side of the stream here oh yeah dude it casts pretty good honestly i can get right up against that rock over there yeah just like that i thought this line is going to be real crappy but it actually seems to work pretty good for dry fly fishing it casts quite a distance but you don't really need anything special for dry fly fishing anyway it's just a basic floating line all right i'm gonna toss on a woolly bugger here because that fly is also a fly that people are gonna be casting with this rod it's probably the best fly to cast for literally any fish that swims so i just got a little olive colored bugger here with some flash on it pretty bright out today so see if that does anything for me i guess all right not bad that's about as heavy of a fly as i'd want to cast on that but not bad there's one boom okay oh i just saw some eyes over there too now i don't have a nap this is what sucks it's a little brown all right a little brown show excuse me yeah first fish on the fly rod there that's a nice little brown too i think it's probably a freshly stocked fish but sweet go okay i'd like to get like a little bit bigger fish than that to really load the rod up but but that was a uh that was a decent trout for this rod kind of what it's made for it's about that size a little bigger another one oh yeah that one's a little better that's a little stock trout for sure he doesn't want to come in either [Music] yeah that's a little bit better fish whoa a little bit better i go get my net or something man okay buddy here we go yeah he's definitely stalked okay well all right guys so it seems like there's some fish around i'm gonna fish a little bit longer than wooly bugger to see if i can catch a couple more fish real quick and then i'm gonna switch over to a nymph rig and see how that works one thing i'm finding is that i don't think the knot strength on this i guess they call it a 5x leader is all that great i tried to i didn't show it because i didn't have the camera going but when i first tied on the first fly i had to tie it on it took me three times because the knot kept breaking and i really had to make sure i wet the knot when i cinched it tight and right there i just broke off so i'm wondering if this is not uh a very good leader and maybe you ought to buy a pack of leaders anyways you're going to need them because you just go through them so buy a decent pack of leaders and probably throw this one in the trash but we'll see let's see if we can land a couple fish on it if i break off again i'm gonna switch it out because i know for sure it's garbage well it just fricking works that's going to be interesting that's going to be interesting he's in the current yeah let's check out the bend of this rod it's got more of like a moderate action there's slower action to it not really a fast action but it's all right it seems to work all right let's see if we can get this one on the reel a little bit oh come on baby i'm gonna test out this reel okay okay seems all right this actually isn't that bad of a fish smell sick okay got him salmon whoa the hell is it brown cool thanks man well it catches fish that's for sure get this guy in hooked we're going to put up a little nymph rig here but i just rigged up a really basic nymph rig it's just a single nymph rig and i just have a airlock indicator that we're going to be casting on there down to a single nymph on the bottom i'm going to put on a real heavy stone fly here just to see how it casts this is actually tied by jesse from mainly outdoors um it's a pretty sweet stone fly that he makes if you guys want to get him go check out his uh go check out his channel and you can contact him to get flies made and get this exact fly it's a it's pretty sweet stone fly imitation but let's see if we can get that up there yeah definitely feel the weight on that oh this fish right here oh got one he took the stonefly rod loads up pretty good definitely has a little bit different bend to it but it's not really that noticeable i thought it would be a little more noticeable though get out of there get out of there sick on the news all right so for my final and full trick i'm gonna pull out the rio versa leader here it's just a sink tip that you can buy to put on any floating line and we're gonna cast a few streamers see if we can catch a couple of fish on that and then we'll call it a day and do the final review wrap up of this fly rod so we've got a pretty heavy versa leader on here but it cow's really good oh my god i can't even do a full cap so i'll hit the bridge but oh fish oh my god dude is that a fish yep oh oh what is that a bass holy smokes dude i think it's a smallie oh no i'm into the nod on that versa leader a nice smallie oh no no no no no no no no no no no oh he's got me wrapped he's gonna be wrapped about good i'm gonna tow him out of there or not yep okay we got him out oh dude look at this fish pretty oh yeah friggin right dude fish on the cat here fly are you kidding me right now look at that fly sticking it out of his mouth down in there boom oh came right out after it oh got him oh that was sick i watched him eat it oh that was sick on the cat here fly too if you guys are watching this video for the rod there's going to be a cat here streamer video and this is going to be in it oh that was six cast in there that brookie just smoked it come on buddy i don't like this versatility there's so many knots let's get it let's get him yes we'll get some nice fall colors he's ready to go get him back to that rock there that was sick oh boom it's a nice one nice colored up fish check out that a little brown trout he smoked though yeah sick so well guys i think that about wraps it up for fishing with this fly rod we'll go back to the house do our final thoughts and review of this rod so catch you guys back there all right guys so let's go over the final review of this sega lange five six weight from amazon as you guys saw from the beginning of this video this rod was right around 90 bucks under 100 bucks that's a pretty damn good deal for a rod reel line comes with everything that you need to start fly fishing right out of the box so you know i've spent more on one spool of fly line than i did on this entire combo here so that's a pretty good deal we'll look at the build quality really quick it has a pretty good cork handle i kind of liked it got used to it i do like a little bit different shape handle as i mentioned before but that's just because that's what i'm used to this one was great um i fished it all day and nothing came apart i don't think the cork part is all that good of quality it's not like really high quality but you're not going to get that on a cheaper rod but it's uh it seems to be pretty good i like it um the real seat is really nice it's nice machined aluminum i didn't have to tighten up my uh locking rings at all and it held pretty good one thing that was unfortunate is the alignment dots are pretty much useless as you can see here that's aligned as far as the guides being aligned and the dots are not aligned this one here the next one up the bottom dot completely came off so you know that's usually a feature that you get on a little bit higher end rods anyways it's more of just a convenience thing you don't really need it i have a 700 sage rod that doesn't have alignment dots on it so you don't need them just kind of a nice thing to have sometimes but the reel i'll get to the reel because that's really kind of why i bought this rod the real the quality of it the build quality of it seems to be pretty good it's machined and usually you gotta spend a little bit more money to get a machined reel like this and it's just gonna stand up a little bit better you know you beating it off rocks setting it on the ground you can see we have a couple little scrapes and stuff on there if that was a cast reel it would chip the paint off and it would look pretty bad after a season the only question i really kind of had with it was the drag and i'm not sure if it's really that much of an issue or not i fought a couple fish with the reel didn't seem to bother too much but again this whole setup was under a hundred dollars so you can't ask for you know any of this stuff to be top notch work perfectly but um i think it works pretty well i did have to occasionally mess with the the tightness of the drag but i don't know if that's because i kept bumping the the the knob here or not or if it just was coming loose over time but other than that the reel was fine the fly line which was which was another question that i had i wasn't sure how good that was going to be actually really surprised me it did everything that i asked of it and more we threw drives we threw bead head streamers we threw nymph rig and then we even put on this versa leader here this sink tip and casted that and it worked fine i had no problems at all really shocked that it was as good as it was as you guys saw the setup of this was not very easy um they gave me too much fly line they gave me too much backing so i had to chop some of it back but other than that you know we got it figured out so we get it on there as good as we could and yeah it's just trial and error you get to chop that down a little bit to fit it all on there the leader that they give you i would pretty much just throw that in the trash and go buy a three pack of leaders right out the gate because you're going to need them anyways i don't think that the quality on this leader is very good i had a few knots break on me a few slips so i would just i would just get something else you know a better i just get a better leader pack the rod itself um it casts really well honestly you guys saw it getting loaded up on a few fish um it cast it cast well even with that weighted line on there i could get some pretty accurate and uh decent casts now when you try to get some extended range on there and really get this thing loaded up i had a little bit harder time casting this versa leader but that's kind of to be expected on a you know a five weight rod you're not going to be able to cast a lot of weight like that um it's that would really be more for like a a heavier rod like a seven or eight weight that you'd want to do that but i had to i want to try to test it you know so you can so we could figure out how versatile this rod was and it worked i'm not you could definitely fish this with a sink tip line on there i think the rod had more of a moderate action which didn't seem to hurt the casting at all it loaded up nice on the fish that we were fishing for and don't really have any complaints of that casting it casting it was pretty good sometimes when you get a cheaper rod it feels kind of clunky kind of heavy but because we stuck with the traditional nine foot five to six weight rod um it felt pretty natural casting it for me it didn't feel awkward and kind of sluggish when we casted it and don't forget that this thing came with a full rod case which is awesome because you don't you just take your rod apart leave the reel on there you can store it it's not going to get broken this right here is really nice came with a set of nippers which work really well and it came with a little fly box with some flies i don't think the flies are all that good quality had a couple fall apart of me when i was just trying them out but at least you have a fly box to put some flies in and everything is there for you to start fishing so i guess the question is would i recommend this rod or would i buy this rod i would say if you're starting out and you're looking to get a rod so that's going to be able to do you know a couple different things throw dry flies through throw some streamers and throw some nymphs i would definitely look into getting this rod you know if people are looking for a second rod maybe you want a streamer rod and an infrared you could buy this as a second rod pretty cheaply and it's basically ready to go right when you get it delivered to you so i was a little skeptical at first when we unboxed it but after fishing with it i was pretty happy i'm gonna hold on to this thing i'm gonna keep it up at camp as a spare rod and hopefully catch a bunch more fish on it so i'll link this down the description for you guys links down there if you want to look at this thing for yourself thanks for watching this video if you haven't already hit that subscribe button and we'll catch you guys in the next video so hey
