Those two semis were the best atmosphere I’ve ever been in a football stadium, I can’t remember seeing anfield full as early as against Chelsea in 2005. Your hairs were stood on end for the entire time.

Good talk about Liverpool, highly recommend you watch from the start.

16:00 - Terry also said Houllier approached him in the tunnel about us being interested in him but he said no

17:00 - They talk about Torres

This cannot be true. @MagicalMartial on Twitter has said that the Anfield atmosphere is a myth so I will believe him rather than the guy who has played at Anfield dozens of times.

Loud enough he could call black players whatever he wanted.

Where can one find the shirt that Carra is wearing?

right good afternoon to Jamie Carragher and our special guest John Terry for this edition of Bostwick I'm delighted that we've got the pair of you together because you're both central figures in what was one of the most extraordinary rivalries between two clubs which hadn't been there previously probably hasn't happened since but in the early noughties or the mid nought is if you like it seemed that Chelsea and Liverpool were playing each other every single week and virtually in the site semi-final as well for about period of seven or eight years John I'll start with you overall just what was it like that whole period we just seemed to draw each other time after time after time and so many iconic and controversial moments in that particular fixture there's an English team you want to kind of avoid any English team whether it's in the group stages or the knockout stages after that and we ended up getting Liverpool in our group as well because I think your wafer didn't kind of recognize that if Liverpool when I won it or a team when I wanted then the team that finished outside the top seats would then get a place in it's a Liverpool come in our group if you remember rightly as well so even a few more games added up there but the rivalry was really intense over the years obviously myself Cara lamps and Stevie that were fighting for places in the England set up as well the fans didn't like each other too much for me the rivalry would play as well John I wanted obviously we were similar you played you know your whole career Chelsea me at Liverpool actually played Chelsea forty seven times at the end of my career so that the opponent I came up against most I always wondered where a lot of the animosity came from was the fact that I always felt it frustrated use because use was so much better than also don't think we were ever out of level playing field oh they use always were a better side we knew that you knew that but the fact we could get results against you at that time sitting in the Josie's ear when maybe even Manchester United they were better than those and asked the battles you seem to beat them with these at that time what was that a little bit part I because there was the frustration that you couldn't be chose even though you knew you were probably far better that I still a lot of areas yeah it was actually and both managers made a big finger that as well I remember dat II thought that kind of Mourinho give before we played after we won the league and I think we were something like 20 or 31 points in front and he was going there's no way you can lose this game against these but he couldn't even say he can't even say the name Liverpool he couldn't he was like pronounce the team it was like you do not lose to these today was so much better than these and that still kind of sticks there as well so it was a frustration because you kind of always found a way to to really kind of settle the game in the away fixtures in there preach a measly games as well but them home games were like for us going into the stadium with support I've said over the years that the atmosphere was probably the best I've ever experienced as a player but yeah frustration was probably the word because we obviously one leaves and stuff like that so I think we felt we was the better side but just couldn't break you down a lot of the time and obviously got knocked out in a couple of occasions do you think there was a --then indeed the fact that with the managers both from England at the same time both being almost like the New Kids on the Block you dad Fergus Lee I'd been given these two managers you know Joe's age on the Champions League rafters on UEFA Cup before he came and it was almost that you know Josie dominated the coverage of two or three years it was just he was massive wasn't he but in the Premier League and the fact that it was now and again men to the Rafa tactically did this on his clever here I always thought that made George I actually do different things engagement sometimes the team she's had come in and when we were playing you and I'd be like why is he playing or what did he do in the air or it's almost like feel like he changed sometimes for Liverpool I didn't know if that was something to do with maybe Jose a feel and he had to do something different because of Rafa because I've always felt that he's played you normal four three three with the two wing is and you know he's what a better team nanos really but I just felt that he's changed the times I think he just felt was well that I think he respected obviously the players you had yourself you know Stevie so I think at times he did change but mentally from us he was like this and be patient for out the 90 minutes or the two legs what he won't come through the better team and the stronger team so we don't need to go out there and win it from the outset so it in them games he definitely showed you a little bit more respect and I think that's a credit to to Liverpool turbulence and the team you add because even in the league I thought he was a lot better than what you kind of achieved on a consistent basis kind of year in year out but he definitely respect it he hated him and referred that rivalry didn't though they hated each other really hated him and they hated each other who said that but they it was like that because we come up against Liverpool so often and him it was it was that rivalry he didn't do it because of Rafa or I think it was our respective the team that you had well I think I think one of the best stories I got tall was by year Wayne Rooney really and I think it shows the probably an animosity towards Chelsea at that time from a lot of clubs and I'm not sort of having a goal is I think the way Joe say was he was so grouchy it was so much on the front he was he was cocky he's arrogant it was he was good-looking he just he seemed to have everything at that time you know at the team basically I think he's lost one game in that face you think was away about city book and we knew he told me a story that I think in the semi-final they were playing sorry were they played well basically when we we beat using a cell somewhere I think it was 2007 sorry so we played use in all seven I think they were playing Milan I'm Alana into the beat in LAN but we must have played the night before away really told me when we warned on penalties all the money and I said like watching it together in the hotel all ruptures and Cheers you think lemon or Mannion I said the rivalry so I think it just shows probably how much or how we sketches rate as a team and feared but also how much sort of jaws ain't Chelsea at that time gone under so many teams skin I think we was you know we was probably disliked by probably the whole nother Premier League I think with Roman coming in at that time and kind of injecting the money at the injection and the players that you brought in and what what Mourinho was about as well it was like within those meetings that we had it was like it's us against them even it's us against the kind of our own kind of Football Club yeah we want to build a fortress and ever one hates us and he kind of he kind of blew that up in his interviews and stuff but within that group he made us feel kind of so together and so connected that we could kind of go out and be anyone so regardless of kind of the fear factors or how good other teams were we always had that sense that we could go and win any game you had that kind of Band of Brothers feel about you John in fact Steve Sidwell was reflecting on it the other day and he said when Josie left the first time he said there were tears in the dressing room yourself Frank anybody that's how strong the bond was is that true yeah we was all in tears and it was it was one of their moments that there was obviously whispers going around at the time he wasn't performing well we wasn't doing as well in the league and then he kind of come in and said that's it guys I've been sacked and kind of went round give everyone a hug and a cuddle but like City said they're like full grown men like crying their eyes out was thinking where do we go from here we had somebody probably like a father figure that had kind of guided us and we was we was concerned for for him that we actually spoke to the board and said this and what we wanted to say like can we not bring you back it's it's a rasa student he's the best we've worked with listen that they've made their mind up and and that was it and unfortunately left but yeah full grown men in in absolute tears John you know online it takes me back also if you think of his timing in to Milan where when he won't I think he won the Champions League in the being about against behind Munich I think you see him with NASA ROTC after the game and players get an emotional sorry he had something special George Amy really I'm sailing with you his players I saw that when insuline I'm sure the same of the Paul talk what was that connect that made it's so different than special but also that that connected plays that was something that Jules he's actually criticized for and questioned for now so what what do you think the differences or what has changed is actually the players he's dealing with now a change I think you could probably put that down to Millennials or or probably players nowadays a little bit I think he was so demanding on the group and he pushed us probably to our limits at times as well where sometimes you fall like it's probably not until you're at this age and you probably finished you realized why he done what he done certain times but even still you'd be sitting there kind of night you'd be out your clock you get a message from him how's Tony and the kids tell Georgie and summer I love him you know how their school going and it was like oh my god never heard that from my manager and it was all them little things even now I get a message or picture or video hi Georgie and summer you just send loads of the kids my kids absolutely idolized him you know and that's because of the way in the connect that probably people don't see from the outside well but you kind of get in and go that's it Knicks alums and I go Lance do you get I got a message from the gaffer last night like chinking I'm the special one lamps ago yes how did I do it then John or otherwise when Rafa Benitez came to Chelsea who had been for a period josuke Marino's nemesis it was tough it was tough I have to be honest when he first came I was actually really looking forward to working more initially you know Steve did you find it did you find it easy to don't forget remember Johnny said Arsenal play a lot better football than Chelsea because that whole pier between Liverpool and Chelsea was very intense and he can't become personal they didn't like each other till he said some fairly damning things about your team he you know he had a go at the band of brothers that's why the support was kind of never took to him and wanted him out from day one they made that very clear from the outset you could say he was quite successful we won the Europa League onto him of course but for me personally you you want to kind of develop and learn so I'd seen obviously tactically out he'd self against this previously the stuff so like everything you give everyone a fair chance and it's down to them to kind of prove to you otherwise and you know we just didn't get on from from day one personally to be honest and every kind of meeting we had it was we used to do this at Liverpool and we've done this and and I feel like Jamie Carragher I used to do this you laugh this way that's what it used to be like just move the yard there and it's like but it wasn't out to have a few conversation boom say gasps ah yes different like forget little poke you you can't keep saying we this work you're at Chelsea now it's not going down well with lads and and kind of listen we didn't get on from day one he obviously left me out at certain times I didn't play much under him but from a tactical point of view I do you think do you think he left it out because it always chat your hands with them because it's interesting because I think that Chelsea's just said before that you you spoke to Rome and all the board's on and Joe's a marine or when he left and you've been in to have a chat with Rafa about would say maybe how he was chatting to say in players we probably never really did that at Liverpool really maybe because me and Stevie we they have so long or whatever it may be baby never really had those conversations with back for all different managers almost you know what the manager said we did so do you think it was almost like a personal thing because you'd question it was I mean it's not gonna be a case of you not being gozando control-c it certainly didn't go down well they definitely didn't help the calls but when he first come I remember getting injured against Liverpool and then he come after that so I was injured when he arrived in our kind of a struggle to be fair don't know if you remember the Suarez tackle on me I scored it was one or what the Braves are thinking and after that he then he didn't coming in so I was out for probably about six weeks before he come in but I was kind of working back towards fitness and I kind of played a couple of games I played away at Fulham in the league I scored so he dropped me for the next game and Chelsea had a big game had the Europa League coming up it's kind of all them little bits that added up but again listen I was trained as always did and and can give everyone the respect that they give me during that period that six or seven years there was six final five semi-finals and the final between but of course there's one game which everybody focuses on the famous ghost girl that was only the second in the series how much do you think that that win and the contentious nature of the wind how much do you think they have ranked up the atmosphere indeed the animosity between both clubs and supporters for the subsequent games that the denaturing the victory I think massively because it wasn't a girl was it wasn't over like I was probably the closest one to it as well and listen it's hard to saying it was it over was it not but yeah I think it did because people kind of wasn't sure technologies improved since then and we'd know today but whatever it was they kind of Liverpool had something on us and it did frustrate us like Cara said earlier and yeah the animosity was spiced up the atmosphere and Phil was always out of this world saying back at the bridge as well we had something some kind of real big ding-dongs along the way but yeah that was a start of it yeah I mean I think the animosity from our side I think I think a lot was was basically Chelsea we're trying to take our captain our local boy Steven Gerrard our top player and we played the Kyle and Cooke fine and I think in the February and Chelsea had one not three two and afterwards I think there was a you know Joe's a come around the players and shaking all the Liverpool players and and I think he did some to Liverpool supporters at the side of the pitch when Chelsea equalized so it was always just sort of grooving really and I just think when those semi finals came out and then we got a great result mil-mil I mean it shows the season we had that year that we'd lost three days before a way to Crystal Palace who he went down and then we went through the best team and then we even got known their last end of the season really booked the atmosphere at Anfield I always say was the best atmosphere I played in and I think it helped because it was Chelsea there was so much animosity towards probably Jose in the arena or more than anyone I would say but the ghost gold I mean no one can ever prove that it was or it wasn't on the line but I hope it's evidence proving I hope it's not over the line to make you feel even worse there was that period where there was talk strong talk with Stephen Jared strongly linked with Chelsea at the time what was your thoughts at the time that the possibility of senior I being at Chelsea well of course it was one of the best players in the world at the time and kind of doing everything possibly with Liverpool so Mourinho expressed his interest to the to the England players and said can we have a kind of quiet word with Stevie which we did Stevie initially said from day one he didn't want to go but I think at the end he kind of got turned like he said recently but he was one the best players in the world at the time so a hundred percent he would have made us stronger and an even better side than we was I actually think it's well documented this the situation with stevia it happened I think a couple times where he was on the verge of the Chelsea and also it was was the fact that he was he was feared and that his career wouldn't go on and have the height of John Terry's or Frank Lampard's or old skulls and different players at Manchester United and Liverpool wouldn't be successful and competing for the top honours really but actually the more interesting thing John because I said the Stevie one's well-documented is is maybe I'm close you come to Liverpool was that 2003 for I remember you saying something in my we were away in Chelsea I think we're having financial problems at the time well before Roman came in was miss Liverpool sniffing around you or trying to get you at that stage I actually forgot because answer the question the other day about how does field and a Man City coming in but the managers 2002 free for you Coulier yeah Jared who know so I didn't play in 2002 freed last game Aziz in the big game I didn't play I was out injured when we won 2-1 secured full place and then obviously Roman coming after that but in the tunnel Julio had said to me listen whatever way this what this game goes if you don't kind of qualify would be interested kind of thing I actually forgot about that Kara so yeah great memory but it was a brief conversation in the tunnel at Stamford Bridge but I was like it's entosis my club you know and then being kind of going any further than that to be honest yeah Caracara different to Stevie obviously but how did you feel when Fernando Torres went to jealousy I couldn't believe it I want to mean by that was I I knew we'd kidded Chelsea I played with Torres then for probably the last 12 months he was a shadow of his former self I think for 18 months the best rate in the world and I think he had such a good record against Chelsea that obviously stuck in the owners mind not so much a manager because the manager changed often a Chelsea book I think at that stage Chelsea was still a club where the owner was making maybe buying players if he wanted I think Shevchenko was a similar case as well and what happened for Rosa was very fortunate for Liverpool was we played Chelsea that season we had having a great season Tara's having a really poor time but he scored two against Chelsea I think we want to nail I think that was under really hunch and symmetry now and I'm feared and I think the decision was probably made Downton or Abramovich as soon as January comes Reagan Fernando Torres now Fernando Torres I thought I mean 50 million was like major money at that stage and I think we were all in a state of shock listen go to Tallis was gone but I think we all knew he eat he was never gonna be the same player but we could not believe we've got 50 million and we ended up by and probably done something similar ourselves in some ways and by an auntie Carolyn 35 million really but we did get Lily swaras ultimate so the money we where Torres went we got two strikers out it but I was I was not surprised at all that it didn't go well it's internally entirely because you touched on it then that he wasn't in great form before that game that he scored the two goals either and then he goes and scores the two against us but from her from a Chelsea point of view obviously he was the one that are hating plan against him he always seemed to score and field or at the bridge and it was that kind of one player that Roman would kind of always ask about and easy tough to play against and and your C was quite close to him so Yossi was at Josie and lads Fernando's on his way and we would like no way we are gonna dominate the Premier League in Europe for the next five or six years this is it that would that was a shield from from obviously playing against the Machine it so it's really interesting to hear that from your side I remember and it was it was and dislocating his shoulder and I think and shelah T put him straight in and I always thought it was a massive mistake really polished because it wasn't an appeal so the Liverpool trying is given him stick the Chelsea fans still not I wouldn't say not love Anna but obviously a new player he don't know too much about him and I just thought he should never have played in that game and always the big money son would that it be pressure from above Carlo Ancelotti to play him in that games I also has a massive mistake we won the game he got a lot of stick and I'm sure in faster than that I'm not sure it would have been pressure from Carlo definitely wasn't that type of manager to kind of listen to the board if they was kind of pushing but which kind of changed our formation really because if you think it was DDA and Fernando out from with an L could just behind wasn't it so it was like we had we had free unbelievable strikers and we was trying to kind of fit him in all together kind of thing but like you said we had enough kind of firepower in Didier in and L car whether an elk was wild or just behind to kind of then bring them they want later on the game which would have been more of an impact for him nothing but yeah like it just seemed after that game his confidence was was shot to bits to be honest well what do you think overall when either of you got the upper hand over the other was it going to tactics was it downs of personnel was it down to personality in this incredible run of games and I punched out you first carrot and what brought the victories you know because it turned into like almost like an OG side RB or Liverpool Manchester United oh what a it had that intensity about it so what did you need to come out on top in these games you needed not to make mistakes that listen the way in probably great watches for the new these games but you said it was more the intensity of what was at stake in these games and obviously John was at one and I was at the other defend and I'm gonna possibly teams be now for our defensive records more than our attack and the records really all being that the most entertaining teams on the I cost me Manchester eyes are asked there was a better watch if you like but I always felt going into that game that if you made a mistake you were gonna lose because Chelsea were too good defensively and possible hopefully they felt something similar tours well if you look a lot of the games then nil nil or one nil the odds want it goes a bit mad I think there's a Champions League one for for a book but more often than not you knew to be Chelsea you had to be between sheets and I'm sure that's something similar what they felt going into those games as well so it almost felt to me it was it was real pressure for a defender in that you couldn't make a mistake really I think whoever made the least mistakes in those games and looked on top yeah we would probably have to agree as well as to be honest because again just remember in Marino's kind of team meetings before the games and stuff like that it was like listen both unbelievable defensively but he just felt that Lambs DBA especially video had a little something over you guys as well kind of scoring big goals on big nights but yeah I mean when we look back at going you know as a back for with him make many mistakes you guys didn't individually as well so there wasn't them kind of errors in their big games kind of any points really but we always just felt that we had enough firepower that if you kind of held out first leg like you did at the bridge that going back to Roundtree we would still have enough but at times we just couldn't break you down or kind of shut you out you know you don't you don't feel a John and you know obviously it seemed as you what stamping bridges and feel for me as well but what is it like as you can see you in your unite for an opposing player you know you're coming out into that into that atmosphere do you think it affects people or do you think some of it is a little bit of a myth or that it is something their care on the same issue that night 2004-5 is probably one the best atmosphere is that if not the best aidan and to be honest and feels a special stadium anyway and to me kind of go in there and experience in that I always kind of thrived on you know getting booed as a team as an individual and kind of that inspired me a little bit that was probably slightly intimidating for me and I was okay with that side of it there'd be a lot of players throughout the league that go I'm not sure about this today and probably still do today when they go for it serve and rule all these big stadiums and get booed from the outset the supporters can make a big difference and we felt that Liverpool under the lights in those Champions League games made a hell of a difference you know but again we had big characters in our lineup that would stand there and go this is what it's all about tonight this is why we this is what we live for you know so we was okay from that side of it but still you kind of look back now and and just realize how special they were you did you did actually play together as a pair for England how did you how did you dovetail how did you do what was the understanding like good I'll show y'all gone I was going to say I was going to go and win everything you could sweep up beyond I think did we play in the back three in Croatia I think we played together there didn't because I'm not sure even the center back was on comlink and then we played in South Africa oh yeah I only played one game I got really hard obviously a mr. J I was really disappointed mr. e I thought I would come back in for the GMB game but say Fabio kept not even scored in the game actually actually tally between you actually faced each other you faced each other 30 times in all cobs where JT winning 13 times there were seven drawers and Cara picked up 10 wins a very very evenly sort full contest but probably hurts carry the most was the last time you faced each other was one on the door at Stamford Bridge and JT scored the near polled think that last game yeah we have a lot of you guys I think Andre wisdom is playing listen I think Chelsea I mean what I would say well Chelsea was even or faced and you were one of the top sides they come up against I almost felt more comfortable expensive grids than I did similar to I'm for you it just feels a lot tighter the pictured santa breed you know this feel like you've got people around you in a turn when you play that all traffic it feel like you're playing on your own time even though Chelsea as I said had some great players they always felt okay did you show me some extent it's interesting you say that actually because a lot of teams I think in them first two years old him early years when Marini I was there it was teams didn't probably realize how good we were as a team so we could play we could mix it I think as it went on teams then come to Stamford Bridge ends why you know Mourinho lost his job and we kind of sit there with five you know sit there are times at MMB on the ball and then because Stamford Bridge is really tight at the pitch you then kind of trying to find a way to break teams or suck people out and you can't because it's so tight now but as you say you go way to the Emirates or you know or Old Trafford and places like that even Villa parks would be a big pitch you know you can break teams down easier and Chelsea was always very tight so I think over the years or later on through that spirit that kind of went against us really as well it's real truth time now again I'll go I'll go to yeah I'll go to Jamie first of all that's a real truth time in the team meetings talk about various players what did Rafa say about JT and also what did Jane what did Joe say say about Cara in the team meetings and two strikes well actually a funny story about this I remember one day this season it started and wrapping it on the press and we were playing Chelsea a few days later and that fed me and Stevie Jared jumped in like attack soon we're going to Anfield to do a promotion for something so he said they are just in the press there and I said you know the asking Oh Chelsea Oh Jonesy and he said yeah people asking about you what did you say I said you're as good as Jones Harry when he said that he went like that like that he definitely been showing me that when he comes to Josie can you remember John and Josie would have said about in terms of you attack you know what it was confident in in getting the ball up to video like I say I think Fernanda ride that against against against us it seems to always score against its Didier kind of had that against us so he wouldn't Moreno would never kind of worried about opposition or try and single players out he'd kind of concentrate on on the opposite side and and go looking at us and individuals need say get it up to video and I found him again to send their ass that was that was him and then video would kind of go yeah get it out to me did they were fans himself against anyone but like I say even the kind of it will not be Liverpool were difficult to break down you know defensively going forward that so much place and acceleration and everything for our midfield so many legs in midfield as well so many good technical players we just found it tough to break team's down so you couldn't even identify an individual of going let's target him I think Jen used in our team so I would say before the game because he was he was so dominant seppius why certainly in an attacking sense for Chelsea only so I got a lot of but so much criticism but all the scrutiny on zona mark on my man marking and I always remember one game we did some guy tried to my marking on a corner but we still did zonal everywhere else on the face corner you beat me in the air and added it down and someone's calling for him to the keeper but thankfully for me it was offside or we got away with it basically but I was I was actually trying to stop you but that idea that right out the window five minutes in the face game you just dominated in terms of that really I mean we used to speak a lot about your Chelsea team and getting Steve eejit around in a position to either side of maikelele because you played that floor 3-3 and but it was lamps or Tiago Vanessa and it sort of bomb and on and I turns maybe immaculately could be left isolated needs to play very central and it's always trying to get Stevie in those pockets either side inside right inside left because obviously with you and Cavalli oh there you know yourself is well you don't media already getting dragged in there with midfield players so that was I think where those early and also we were quite direct against Jews deliberately so because we didn't want we always felt you so powerful in mid fear that if we played into midfield and lost it user possibly the best team in Europe at that time it's off and robbing and drug there on the counter attacks all fours it was make sure there's no counter attack in that game and a way to counter the opposition have encounters is to go diarrhea because the second ball is always dropping you know obviously yeah towards you if it's interested in that car as well because like I said a lot of teams have come to the bridge we kind of sit back and get bodies behind the ball it felt like in in their games at the bridge especially like you say whether it's Nando or Suarez up front you had quiet one side you know you had Stevie kind of Hut and we'd kind of go on the counter-attack and defensively naturally you go right Liverpool drop back we've got one striker between the three of us Michael a loose just in front perfect and it was a case of going quiets not really tracking back massively Steve he's kind of hovering in between and then all of a sudden now we're kind of freely freely I'm not comfortable as a sender I'll fear it's a kind of stays so all of a sudden you go is in come back just to just to get an overload now defensively that's great because we're solid but then going forward we're kind of limiting what one of our big shrimps might as well so I think that causes problem so that's interesting to hear that from your side as well I mean John you can hear Kara hold you in the highest ever double take I couldn't believe it's just outrageous captain to the to the death the decade before is captain of that team but II just understand why wasn't anyone three Premier League well the big questions what do you mean in your Carib in your team with a listen I said when I done Monday Night Football cameras well I got a lot of stick for putting carrying my team you know because I was on the show people what you mean but no but you know you know because I was on the shuffling people for up you know and are you putting me because she was on the show of him I wasn't and I wish we were to play together more England Kara to be honest I thought we had a good kind of reform relationship I fought before this interview understand understand on the training pitch was was really good I felt so unfortunately we did and bout I would definitely have lied so yeah and I do listen I figure he was a very defender for me yeah I mean one is interested I've always said this and I always feel you're new and better version of me to be honest I mean this I'm still I always feel good players can play together but I think we were similar in so many ways and I think that partnership you had with real ways there's probably as good as anything anywhere at international level we always talk about the the golden generation that achieve and what we should own but if you actually look at what the actual defense did and you think of 2006 going down to the 10 men we still kept a clean sheet in that game so when we talk of the golden generation I always feel it's more the the offensive players you've probably never showed as much as lucky showing the premier he always felt yourself in Rio even if you go back to 2004 think we humans salt at centre-back in the poor to your game as well so I don't think we ever had problems defensively so I think you know yourself Rio Sol Campbell it were the three standout sense of actually I probably I was probably the fourth one in in the probably 2005-2006 and I could have no complaints again you know about that decision but in terms of how you performed for England I always think when we talk about that you know maybe we should do more generation of players I always feel half the place did their job in some ways as I said you social and offensively in those tournaments yeah it still was wearing them be torn it's like I said about playing you guys as well you kind of don't want to commit too many bodies forward as well so at times we was probably a little bit to kind of defensive as well and probably we had three if not for the best midfield players in the world in Steven Lance Coles in kind of he'll be kind of restrict and going that way and kind of make him a little bit more defensive to protect us so yeah we was tight defensively but I think the midfielders still had other parts of playing that even though they didn't kind of do that going forward but yeah I think in that time as well there was obviously myself Rio that was playing more regular and then obviously when Rio got banned and I played the long side so there was obviously yourself led the king that was in the round it's so defensively we always felt really strong we had action bridgie we had John OH right back yet you could play right back as well defensively always felt kind of sound and solid it was it was in the attack in areas that I felt if we got an injury we've kind of struggle a little bit enjoy your time in England and in those tournaments and doesn't said it gets a lot of scrutiny on it with obviously headaches in years and maybe not doing as well as we as we could off I mean I always hear probably Frank or Rio or maybe even Stevie Cho of the system and settles and different things I mean I haven't here do too much on that is there anything you look at anything I wish we did that I wish that would have been difficult a lot could have made the difference I always felt personally that going in you kind of finish the season probably in your Pig fitness and in your best condition and then we kind of always add two or three weeks off if you remember rightly before those tournaments so you have two or three weeks off and like loads now don't matter how much running you go and do or how much fitness won't you go and do when you come back you're going to be miles off it from a playing point of view and we always used to play catch up on what whatever manager that was under the four or five six managers are played under of England you go back you then try and do some runs which then I make you even more tired after the season you just add playing sometimes 60 65 games you then kind of not get your sharpness so the tournament arrives kind of two weeks three weeks later and you know we're near your peak tritanus you then need to get four or five games which will you get your fitness by that time we're past the group stage in the quarter-final we're out so just as we're getting our main fitness and we're going again we're kind of about the tournament of what when I was England tactually I said to the FA we should delay our season and put it back a little bit further stretch it out slightly so you finished the season five days later we go to a Portugal and we've got our first game again you know in the group so everyone's even though it's seeing as a season you're gonna feel a little bit tired but you never get that sharpness back so for me just by delaying it and going into a tournament like that I felt would have benefited this more but nobody listened well nothing's nothing's changed and nothing else I don't know I don't know if you felt the same care as well you it's like when you go back preseason if you you can do all the running you want the kind of offseason you go back you can do laps of the pitch arm work all work first gonna senior like I'm miles over here and it probably takes you four or five games to really find yuffie yeah I mean I remember the England's one where a lot of the time I go in because I could play right back as well as you just meant to sort meant the manager could bring an ex on the tackle it's like I could cook a centre-back I'm right back and I remember in 2006 we play the Trinidad and Tobago think I think it was their County scored the header yeah and that is came right back and show me sweltering and I actually got in the ice bucket halftime that's always my only recollection of actually a well-cooked really just how hot it wasn't difficult it watched me going from center back to right back and and actually dealing with the roll in there I always I mean I don't really look back at my England credo of actually going to wear a corpse and say I actually enjoyed it to be honest and Laura a lot of it was that you never felt you could give you a better your best I was just felt Tigers the end of the season but I always think the thing for me is what I always felt as if I was playing the slightly different position and I just wasn't used to that ruling at all she's and I just saw brings back nightmares made you appreciate being the center off John John it's been absolutely fabulous to chat you and bring back memories of what seemed to be two clubs locked in an eternal battle from the mid 2000 Fantasticks that hopefully football will be back soon but for now for myself and I know also from Jamie thank you so much for joining off-script and hopefully we'll see you soon pleasure guys thank you
