[Music] oh man whole world what is up welcome to build I'm your host Matt Forte we are here live at the build studio in New York City happy Steve Irwin day everybody yes yes the khaki out that's right every year November 15th is officially the day to celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of the one the only Crocodile Hunter himself Steve Irwin Animal Planet right now has special programming wall-to-wall you can flip over there at any moment but I'd suggest hanging out right here for the next half hour at least because joining me shortly to talk about season two of their fantastic series crikey it's the Irwin's who better to help me celebrate Steve Irwin day then Terri Irwin and Robert Irwin themselves the Irwin's are back come on I'm excited are you they are they're still clapping we're very excited we're gonna bring them out in just a second but first I believe we have a trailer for the show so let's go ahead and run that clip this year is massive preparing for our 50th anniversary we're gonna make Australia Zoo bigger and better than ever I love you Steve would be really proud it's gonna be an incredible adventure I'm catching my first rattlesnake it's going to be really awesome ladies and gentlemen please welcome two of my favorite people in the world Terri Irwin and Robert Irwin do it up [Applause] happy Steve Irwin day thank you so much for being here look at you guys amazing I like it but I thought you know it works we're in the colors wildlife warrior nevertheless I'm so excite all me you guys were coming through I didn't believe it I thought for sure that you were be at the zoo for this day and I was so thrilled that you could be here with us what a treat to have you here and what a great reason to be in New York not only Steve Irwin day but congratulations sir you were here for a fantastic event was it just last night yeah yeah it was last night bindi and myself were really really honored to be listed in the time 100 next hold for applause time thank you so much it was really really incredible I mean we were just floored it's an amazing group of people that were there some of the most influential kind of next generation world leaders and to be recognized amongst those people was was incredible so bindi is back at Australia Zoo kind of holding down the fort there and doing everything for steve-o and day and we were kind of glad we could sort of divide and conquer and I think it's it's great you know we're all about continuing dads leg see and so special to be recognized for that on Stevo and I as well it's it's awesome third fourth year of Steve Irwin day how long have we been doing Steve Irwin day officially on the phone Craig yeah so he passed in September of 2006 and the following year we started Steve Irwin day because I thought you know Steve's memory and mission and legacy shouldn't be sad it should be a day to celebrate everything he stood for and that we're wanting to continue on with his good work so he's he was all about family and fun and wildlife and conservation so that's what we do we all get together at Australia Zoo and people around the world like yourself wear khaki and we we all celebrate him in our own special way but I think it's a great day to remember the positivity of Steve he was just a hurricane of a human being and it is true that while there's no word in the English language for the opposite of a procrastinator that was Steve and when you want to do it now it's just as annoying as a procrastinator except it's a real life lesson so I always tell people that say to me oh I'd like to go to Australia or I'm thinking about doing it but I'm gonna wait until the kids are older or IRA to do it now just be like Steven do it now life should be sweet yeah you know I was going through the Steve Irwin day hashtag on Instagram just looking at all the posts and there's tons of photos and of course there's drawings and art and all kinds of different things what's it like to see that outpouring from all over the globe just every corner of the world it's amazing really amazing to think that all these years and dad's mission his legacy the work that he started is is still alive and well and people to this day will stop us on the street and just say how much he affected them and especially when you see young people that'll come up to you and say I'm gonna be a marine biologist or I got into zoology because I of your dad and for us that's just amazing it's really is moving every time you know we see that and I think that people have been so supportive on our journey throughout everything and it's just really really an honor to get to continue that work and make sure that everything he started continues you know for sure but you got to understand how weird it is so season two of crikey it's the Irwin's has come out and we've done a big promotion tour la New York gotta love New York and then off to London so when the promotion tour ended we decided to do something fun at the end so I said to Robert where would you like to go in the UK so there is the cutest little weasel that lives on the Isle of Skye in Scotland an individual weasel that lives well so it's not squeeze oh yes so we're we're after the weasel yep and so we go to dinner at a beautiful restaurant and someone on the Isle of Skye in Scotland in the middle and our way here's how my life took direction because of Steve and it's just incredible to encounter people like that every day I mean we we did find the weasel - just just FYI no no the weasel actually found it did the weasel was like yeah I'm the reason that little scallywag yeah he found us trying to find our weasel but the weasel finds us yeah you wait long enough that is true knowledge today guys I'm reminded so much of the work that your father did in in the work that you do obviously carrying on that torch carrying that legacy and I saw this amazing video of this little four year old wildlife warrior who idolizes you Robert I know and you got to meet this little guy it was in just what he's experienced be about meeting the I forget his name his name's Owen yes yes so as part of everything we do with Australia Zoo we have wildlife warriors which is this nonprofit organization that mum and dad first started and part of wildlife warriors we have the visionary wildlife warrior program where it's basically encouraging youth young people from all over the world to really get involved with wildlife conservation through fundraising and and all kinds of different things and so Owen this amazing little kid from Australia he's not even five years old he signed up and ended up raising five thousand dollars and Counting for conservation efforts and for our Wildlife Hospital and it was amazing because we'd been following his story for a long time and he he'd always just just this bundle of energy with like snakes and all his little lizards that he would find and he'd love kind of making these videos and he always said that his dream was to get to meet me and I was so honored and it was amazing to think that I could influence this amazing little guy to actually kind of follow his dreams to be a wildlife warrior and to finally get to meet him quite recently was just awesome and meant so much to me personally it was incredible as well man every time you guys come through we've got a chance to talk a couple of times now but I feel like you've always just been honoured or are about to be honored for something and I wonder when you get one of those that recognition when Time magazine says hey you're one of the 100 most future if you heavily influential people in the and on the planet do you get something like that and obviously it's an honor is it daunting is it oh man I gotta live up to this I got to do this now I'm yeah I gotta be this person yeah I definitely think that um when when we were you know at the event and amongst all of the other honorees it is kind of I guess overwhelming in a way it's quite amazing to think that the bhindi and I would would be part of this incredible group but at the same time I think for us it's we've just always had this drive and this passion I think it's because of of mum and and because of dad that really instilled that for us and I mean growing up in a zoo it's hard not to be passionate about it but we kind of work every day towards this goal and towards this mission and when you have recognition like that it kind of it really I don't know it's it's I guess validating in a way but it's but it's also you know just it really means a lot to know that that what you're doing your message is reaching people and people are listening to that that's what I really take away from and I think it's so important as young people to inspire that next generation and to try and get as many people involved because there's some pretty crazy things that are facing the world and it's it's up to young people I think to fix those problems quite honestly I agree and I find - it's it's like another recognition for conservation so I looked when Steve got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame he's the first and only conservationist who have been recognized like that so it's kind of bringing that to the forefront and it's like win food for wildlife and conservation last night it is very humbling last night to sit there amongst all these politicians and scientists and amazing people doing incredible things and then you're like I'm here for conservation yeah and I'm here for the animals and it is fantastic but you know the world has finally learned that conservation is not just about protecting little woodland creatures it's ultimately about protecting us and when it was the president of Costa Rica who spoke and he said when he talks to his people about why climate change is an issue and his people will say but what about jobs and medicine and the things that we need today and he'll say if we don't address climate change it'll affect all of that and we're seeing it we're seeing it in places like Australia where drought is causing people who have farmed for generations to not be able to continue climate change isn't about whether it's about something much bigger of a of a trend and that affects jobs and it's so heartwarming to hear young people saying I get it and I want to do something about it and it's not a sad thing it's a positive thing we can make change we can do it now and if we all do something we'll be okay well this day obviously a hundred percent it is about all of those things that it is about Steve's legacy it is about what we can all do to carry that on but I would be remiss not to bring up Harriet the hundred and seventy five year old Galapagos land tortoise yes who I believe it's the reason it's the relationship that Steve had would Harriet that led us to choose is that correct that that's why it's November 15 yeah that is totally correct no you spot-on yeah yeah well Harriet was an incredible animal and and Harriet I didn't actually really get to know Harry very well she she passed away quite a few years ago but Harriet was the oldest by far the oldest animal that we had at Australia Zoo she was actually a beautiful tortoise that was originally collected by Charles Darwin way way way back in the day and she the Arwen's tortoise yes exactly keep going yeah yeah so she's was written up in a lot of different textbooks and literature for I mean literally almost what one and a half centuries she was over 170 years old and she was kind of like the the grandmother of of Australia Zoo and dad absolutely loved her and I think she was just such a beautiful old soul you know she was she was collected by Charles Darwin in 1835 and taken to England where she didn't thrive because England's weather is different than the kalapa goes and so in 1842 she came out with captain Wickham on that USS what was it bounty or something she was at the Botanic Gardens in in Brisbane for a number of years and finally ended up at Australia Zoo but I'll let you in on another little secret a little tiny tiny secret November 15th was also the day that after waiting and more than a month for Steve to call me after we first met he finally called me and he said I'll be there in 10 days I'm coming to Oregon and I thought that's very presumptuous how do you know I haven't met another bow you know how do you know that this yummy snack here yeah yeah and I haven't been scooped up but no I'd been pining away and November 15th he called me and he came over but the joke was kind of on him because he came to see me and didn't know it was Thanksgiving so he met the whole Thanksgivings not a thing in Australia so no no it's an eye-opening experience very eye-opening with my family so they were there was there was that as well yeah yeah so there was that combination of it was a day that we recognized Harriet's birthday and I think we wanted to make a kind of a really happy a happy day not you know something to go wow is it incredible everything he achieved and just to make it a big celebration for everyone yeah and I think it just felt like the right right date there are a lot of really happy posts out there talking to me the season - Oh crikey you guys have you out halfway through in terms of airing have you finished filming season two of you yeah yeah so it's wrapped you guys did the whole thing yes so season two is it's all finished and it's kind of rolling out now it's really exciting because yeah we're about halfway through and season 2 is totally I mean it's it's ten times bigger and better than season 1 and it's just so exciting because it's really you know covering the whole scope of everything that we're doing at the zoo just like in season 1 but but at the moment we're kind of at a bit of a turning point for the zoo we're approaching our 50th anniversary so there's a lot of really big things coming and we're making the zoo bigger and better than ever we're expanding our conservation work so it's also a lot of international travel you'll see me catching rattlesnakes in Arizona and mum doing like medical checks on grizzly bears and some pretty amazing stuff in Australia and also overseas bindi gets to swim with whale sharks the biggest fish in the world so it's pretty cool yeah and I want to get to them because we do have an extended look at one of the episodes that just aired it's kind of a perfect moment especially for today before we do any of that though we're gonna run that in a second but I notice this when I sat down to talk to you guys I didn't catch it when the photo was on my computer and smaller what happened Terry your arm here that in this press photo you are still covered in scratches and by yes I I was I was quite she was attacked by that guy no actually that was the sea turtle is that the sea turtle yes getting ready to release a sea turtle that's wrong I was and it flapped really hard and it was a bit of a struggle and we were releasing it and yeah smelled the ocean and wanted to go that's right yeah between the sea turtles and the meerkats the grizzly bear left me unscathed onic isn't it don't even fix it they don't even like I could've done something with that no no I'm fine I'm fine it's just always something we got a clip I want to take a look bindi couldn't be here physically with us but we've got her in spirit let's take a look at this video really quick it's a great moment from the show I'm here on the Newbury reef to be part of some groundbreaking whale shark research we're hoping to track a whale shark overnight to study its behavior I've been swimming with this whale shark for over half an hour now but I still haven't gotten the ID photo that I made it's really important that she keeps up with the shark and that she gets that photograph sidon because the orientation of the spot pattern photo it's really important for identification purposes when you watch a whale shark it almost looks like they're moving in slow motion but because they are such big animals just a small flick of that tail speeds through long that it's requiring a whole lot of energy to keep up [Music] I finally got the photograph and I am so happy [Music] sorry - bye [Music] [Music] we've got the ability to give him a nickname and given you were the first one to say this shot what do you reckon I would be honored to tell you the truth this all came about because of how much my dad loved the Wales jocks so would it be ok if we gave this guy at the nickname of Steve absolutely a one six nine nine is now alternatively known as Steve oh man Steve the shark amazing I go absolutely amazed it is really cool but you got to stop and think these sharks are all swimming around there's over 1600 of them tagged and monitored and the one shark I can see it swimming up and going hey my name is Goliath how you doing and the other sharks like yeah my name is doom doing pretty good and then this guy swims up and goes I'm just imagining how that's gonna pan out yes really but one of the most amazing things about I mean everything about that's amazing but the it's shot in such a way you get some real perspective you see how hard bindis working to keep up with this animal that's barely moving like it's just chilling but cruising Manny that the power and the grace he's right it's it's really amazing to say oh and when she got back from that truth she was just so so stoked so over-the-moon with that and I have to say I was maybe just a tad jealous you got to take that Vinny always gets the fun trips I don't why don't I get to go tag whale sharks but I was always curious about that if you guys like sat down you're like alright I'll feed the Crocs you take the big whale a hot yeah how does the division work yeah well that's actually pretty much what happened because I was at the zoo I think we were moving Ecco the biggest crocodile that we have at Australia Zoo we're doing this crazy monumental move with this giant croc and so I had to stay home and do that while bindi was filming with whale sharks so you know I was I was happy with with my crocodile but still it's a whale shark that's pretty cool but yeah this is the this is the arguments that we have it's not it's not really what most families fight over it's it's who gets to swim with the whale shark oh do the rattlesnakes yeah so I thought the project is interesting so the basis of the study is to see how whale sharks move when they dive how they feed and then how people interacting with them affects them so what they've learned is basically if you don't touch them and you don't get directly in front of them they don't care about you at all so the coolest thing is responsible and respectful tourism could save the planet so imagine if instead of that guy ending up as shark fin soup people are paying to swim alongside it and get a photo and experience this beautiful animal respectfully and responsibly then we've got a future for reconnecting people with wildlife so it's an exciting project so that we can protect them but still enjoy them absolutely amazing Wow yeah well it the season we're only about halfway through or think in terms of what's there it's so far and already it's just incredible do we are season 3 has any official word yet I think the word should go out now Animal Planet's we like to see season 3 I think we'd all like to see a season say where we gonna say Robert I'm gonna cut you off no fingers crossed we're gonna go in just a second but I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't say first of all congratulations on bindis engagement what a beautiful thing what a wonderful thing to celebrate yes absolutely [Applause] oh it's wonderful and if you've ever seen Parks and Recreation bindi is Leslie Knope yes she's my gosh yes she's we have wedding meetings and we all get our color-coded binders and she's so cute because she's always very inclusive what do you think what's your opinion I'm like heck no just do all of this and I'll just go have a mai tai by the pool thanks so she's completely organized and she asked you a pretty special yes yes I get to walk her down the aisle so I'm so excited I'm is so so touching for us and um yeah I think it's gonna be a really special day I think there's gonna be some some animals involved as well so it's gonna be fun and just a beautiful celebration it'll be great totally totally and then I love bindi because she's so environmentally minded that instead of throwing rice we've all started now hole punching the eucalyptus leaves after the koalas eat them they don't eat every leaf so you take the leaf out and replace using recycled yuku so we're doing hole punches so that we can scatter eucalyptus leaves ernest has a wedding they're so cute they're like Australia Zoo can I help call the zoo and go I know what you do yeah the whole team at the zoo because we've got over 400 team members and they're kind of like family as well they're just a big extended family and everyone I mean there's just a big buzz around the zoo and everyone's kind of pitching in and doing their part and it's gonna be a big day it's good it's great and we do like at weddings that Australia Zoo anyway since and since Australia finally got its act together and there's marriage equality we do lots but yeah Australia finally but III think this is just gonna be so beautiful and special and and it's gonna be during the 50th anniversary of the zoo it's just gonna be such a monument it's gonna be everything happening at once because that's easy oh yes yeah no good question yeah Photography is still going really well really enjoying it I think it'd always be a passion for me you know I think it's a great tool to really get people connected with wildlife with nature and I think yes mum was mentioning if you see something if you get to see an animal especially something maybe in a bit of a different light if I can show the the nicer side to a crocodile or these animals are often portrayed as pretty big bad and ugly if you can show how beautiful each animal really is I think that definitely goes a long way to their protection and and I think that's why I love photography so much and I think yeah it's it's going great I'm definitely going to be considering and your judging to our crikey magazine which I heard a really nice person gave you yeah earlier we have a photo competition every year and we got over 7,000 entries and Robert was judged as one of the judges and super-fun the top 20 are touring in the Queensland Museum right now so it's very special yeah yeah yeah I said the very top I said everybody please welcome to my favorite people in the world and I sincerely mean that whenever you guys can Center I have so much fun and you do incredible work and it's an honor to be able to get to sit down and talk about all the amazing stuff you do thank you well we love you guys and we always love talking to you it's it's the best thank you so much having put you on the spot you had to say that but I appreciate it's true it's true I mean one magazine who are we gonna give it to ya we're gonna reserve this one yeah more than words can express but thank you so much let's go ahead and get some questions from the outside world the first ones from Twitter this is from at Edward is the man what is your what is your favorite animal Edward wants to know favorite animal alright okay well it's a good question don't we have an alligator named Sanjay as we do yes 9 Sanchez yeah that's gotta be Edward's favorite totally edward the the man alligator what's your favorite my favorite animal would have to be without a doubt crocodiles I love it crocodiles so much they're modern-day dinosaurs they're just so big powerful just amazing but very intelligent at the same time yeah they're just incredible I think it's it's pretty wild you know getting to work with Crocs every time you're in there you know feeding them or moving them you really kind of get to realize just the the power that they have and the fact they've been here for so many millions of years there's just beautiful animals yeah we're doing a project right now to try to protect crocodiles more extensively in Australia so you can go to Australia Zoo calm and and sign our petition to further protect crocodile yeah my favourite animal coming from Oregon for years and years and years I worked with Cougars but now that they're not really animals anymore yeah there's a different meaning for yeah anyway but I love yes the ghosts of the Rockies yes doesn't really have a cool name like that no yes Sanchez yeah that's pretty cool yeah like the ghost of the weasel and it's very similar to that I won't do one more let's go ahead we got a microphone out there where are you there you are hey what's like thank you guys so much for everything you do have learned so much just from your show yes you're so inspiring thank you my question is actually for Robert if you weren't in the family business or working in photography what profession would you do oh that's a very well thank you but no not that I think you know that's a that is a really good question I think for me I I do feel really lucky that I've gotten to find my passion and kind of my calling very early on and wildlife conservation will always be I think the biggest part of my life and and it's interesting because there's a lot of ways you can do that you know photography is definitely part of that you know with the new show there's so many different avenues that you can take but I think if I wasn't doing that I couldn't imagine doing anything else other than this but if I wasn't I don't know what do you think I'd be doing I already gave my yes but there's been veto so I couldn't imagine doing anything else I don't know how you could be Steve Irwin son and do something else but yeah all grow up in a zoo and go I want to be an astronaut I think I thank you I think this will always be my passion you're a great surfer mountain biker you love mountain biking yeah that's good I definitely have a lot of other hobbies and a lot of the things that I'm into but study business take over the company let me retire sure I guarantee you whatever it is whatever it may be you'll be wearing shorts I have to commend you for the work you do but for coming to New York and November wearing shorts man commitment yeah I know that's something to be respected what's your deal my passion yes I love theater so happy I want to share it with everybody if it's brought up by like face lights up I wish I could be on the stage but yeah marketing or directing I could do anything it brings joy to so many people story it's a story everyone in the room will feel the same way but also in such a different way and yes you've with the same experience but you like you have such a different lesson you're so young and you will live several lives in one lifetime so I bet you end up on this stage thank you will you come to my show yes totally you invite me we'll be the ones in cocky yeah that would be thank you good luck no well thank you so much for that and thank you all of you guys for being such a great audience and hanging out and chill them with us and asking great questions Edward thank you for your question for you watching out there live and as always sincerely from the bottom of my heart thank you so much for coming and hanging out with us on this day of days it's been an absolute treat I want to remind the world I said it before right now today Steve Irwin day if you turn on Animal Planet right now there's nothing but awesome programming all day wow that's always true I love Animal Planet
