what is realization and how does it relate to behavior or another way of looking at it is how would you characterize it to you know someone that you're sitting next to on a long airplane flight and you're saying like well yeah you know holiness dalai lama is a person of great realization then the guy goes oh yeah you know my uncle phil you know yeah he's yeah you go no no no what i mean is um well from a buddhist point of view genuine realization is a direct perception of the nature of the mind which is beyond it's the fullness of wisdom and compassion is the um the very nature of reality and is in itself neither existent nor non-existent right so someone who has a genuine uh experience of that realizes that everything that they thought they were they are and and that is a if it's a genuine realization it completely tears the fabric of their whole conception of what they are because we relate so much to who we are in gender in race in intelligence in background in our childhood and and so forth this is me this is who i am and then when you actually have a genuine experience of of our true nature the nature of the mind beyond all of that stuff it turns everything up topsy-turvy of course then you come back to it again but if it's been a deep enough experience then you are able to realize that as the buddha said i too use conceptualizations but i'm not fooled by it and that's the difference we still live in this this relative world but we realize now it's just a relative world whereas most of us are terribly trapped we're in prison and we don't realize that we're in prison we have no way out and we think the prison is home and we don't realize that our home is something completely different that's a tragedy and that when you have that kind of realization you can see it in the great llamas naturally compassion arises because you see how trapped everyone is they're all in the same situation whether they're high or low or poor or rich we're all trapped absolutely enslaved by this ego which is a very very tyrannical cruel taskmaster and and we're all the slaves we're not in control at all and how how terrible that is how much suffering we cause to ourselves and then to everyone around us look at the world this could be a paradise and what have we done with it and we continue to do worse and worse and worse it gets more and more extreme and so naturally compassion arises how could it not we have the highest potential and look what we do with it the amount of violence and and you know just insatiable desires and lusts and and evil and cruelty and exploitation of other beings other animals the earth itself i mean none of it is necessary but you know our greed and our violence get out of hand because of our great delusion it's just what the buddha said and the three poisons are totally rampant in everything just look at the advertisements just look at the movies and they just saturate people's minds from small small even the cartoons and it's tragic utterly tragic no wonder you know these great beings take vows to keep coming back and trying to set somebody right how can they leave how could you leave when you see what's happening you couldn't just leave the burning house and say well sorry folks you know i'm out too bad you're burning which is why wisdom and compassion are conjoined because the more clearly you see the greater the wisdom the greater compassion has to arise they go together so then a moment of clarity is a moment of love genuine love human beings are really weird are they not i'm so glad we don't believe in god i would have a hard time with him having created us the way we are i mean he could have created a little bit more bias you know towards being sensible and then just to sit back and watch us get on with it
