now without further delay I like to turn today's call over to your first speaker Chuck Tomasi Chuck you have the floor hello and welcome to tech now the web series for ServiceNow administrators and developers on how wide variety of platform topics it is my pleasure to welcome you once again to episode 60 of tech now my name is Chuck Tomasi I am a senior TPM Emmett service now they're here for about eight and a half years coming up on the thousand it feels like and I was going to work for a couple of years before that in a lot of history I'm not going to read the entire slide because Craig has a lot of great information on that server coming up however if you'd like to keep in touch with me you can find me on the community at ServiceNow you could find me on youtube do a lot of lot of stuff including this one of course but just reach out for me on the community is probably the best way to get in touch with me and with that I'm going to turn it over to our rock star of the this episode Craig step blue and as well we wanted to work so much time my name is Craig snip and I'm currently a senior curriculum developer and service now I'm working the training in certifications department so in the labs that you see or interact with like a knowledge or maybe some of the classes you may take through the service now I'll handle the backend and stand up basically that I have built the infrastructure to produce the instances that's used for those classes and events for knowledge in math to say the least and I've been in service now since 2014 and I'm into podcasting photography and Linux all day long so that's me and I'll pass different Stacey so uh what was your calmodulin hi everyone my name is my name is Daisy Bailey I'm the program manager in the training and certification department with Craig I've been on Obama's ServiceNow space versus a customer and as a partner and I was an employee since around 2014 also I apologize for my voice and a little bit under the weather but very excited to learn more today about mid servers all righty so our agenda today is we're gonna cover a community quick tip this is just a quick tip that we got is useful wonderful platform feature that may be largely unrecognized by many of you if some of you are familiar with it all the better but I wanted to make sure that every once in a while somebody comes as hey how did you do that we're going to cover nectar sort Li Stinky's got one for you that I absolutely love and feeling it is widely underutilized even by myself and then we will get of course into the main topic around mid service if you've got questions type them into the Q&A panel that Margaret spoke about earlier and we will do our best to answer them if we don't get to them it's not because we don't like you it's usually because we're on a time or we have to go back and research the topic so we will post all questions and answers and once there of course duplicates or irrelevant like yes I can hear you if we're not going to post those to the community afterwards as soon as we get the Q&A we will post them so surprise surprise we have an application in ServiceNow to help us manage all of this content that's community being and ring the bell we just made a shameless self-promotion speaking of shameless self-promotion whatever I do that knowledge is coming up may 5th through 9th in Las Vegas 2019 I don't know if you're watching this sometimes people watch these years later we've been doing tech now for six years and you may see commercials out there for knowledge 13 coming up well knowledge 19 is in fact coming up as we record this and encourage you to go to now it's that service now check out the check out the agenda you can you sign up real real soon if not right now I know that the pre con training agenda is out but can sign up for those yet so that'll be coming I believe in March if my sources are correct lots and lots of great hands-on labs and workshops don't get to thank Craig for all the hard work of getting those instances set up with the proper configuration and all that good information the some of them even have mid servers attached to them how about that yeah yeah also what is mine you Success Center this is actually an obsolete screenshot as of about a week ago I encourage you to go to ServiceNow comm slash success where we have 50 it was the last count I got last week at our big sales kickoff 50 best practices are documented out there you can talk to somebody yesterday about getting another one up there and I encourage you to look for the success navigator this is an awesome tool by answering a few short questions it can give you a very concrete action plan that you can assign tasks to people and really walk through what is the journey of service now whether you are just starting out or you're very mature in your processes and implementation there is something here for you so please please look that out look for that and don't forget to check out the success navigator as well I also want to put it a promotion for developer dot ServiceNow comm since we are talking to a lot of developers please go there get a free personal developer instance free learning plans this is a great way to extend your career expand your knowledge with the scripting API is with learning plans know from Edmond to developer if your developer on another platform you want to learn more about ServiceNow is a great place to go Dave and Andrew are putting developer blog content on there all the time as well as videos tons and tons of stuff please go check it out you see it's a wonderful wonderful resource so at this point I'm going to turn it over to Stacy for the community quick tip Chuck off my screen share right now like you fax editor macros have been part of the platform since Fuji or before so this has been around there quite a bit but in a lot of cases people don't no matter think of syntax editor macros and some text expanders for ServiceNow so I've always kept an Evernote notebook of code clips and technical references but if we go to syntax editor macros the under system definition and available to anybody who has a dream access when we take a look at these we can see that we can easily create a new one there are two main parts the name and the text and if we type them into say a new script include or any type of script field we can see a script filled by the controls that we've got available so we just saw a syntax editor macro called VAR gr if I type var gr that was in the name field and press the tab button then that expands that text to show me my code we can use this to make sure that we're following coding best practices keep track of some useful code that we want to reuse in other places so syntax editor macros under system definition and you can create your own in searching the community and just online I've seen people publish their repositories of various syntax editor macros one place where it would be very very useful to use is when defining widgets in the service portal if we go to edit a widget though we see script fields here but when I do vara gr here and type tab nothing happens within the district editor here or widget edit panel these aren't exactly script fields so I just want to spend one moment taking a look at how you can add syntax editor macro support for service portal and if you search the community for service portal syntax editor macros Dan giver had posted an article about a year ago that gives you guidance for how to do it super super simple it gives a UI script here which we can copy to the clipboard of course if you're watching this on replay you can slow this down okay so the first thing is a UI script will call this widget macros and paste that code shouldn't that and then under a service portal we'll go to widgets and this widget editing piano is actually a widget itself so we find that open it up and scrolling down to the bottom under widget Edel panel we see dependencies we can create a new dependency we'll call this widget macros right clicking save to stay on the form and then we secret macarons so with those couple of steps we can refresh our widget edit panel there quick prayer to the demagogues and there now whenever we're creating new widgets or evidence in the widget editor panel we don't have to in tax editor support yep under a lot alarms this time the Nessun business fantastic yeah I'm gonna start transporting all the stuff that I've gotten Evernote into probably and github repository of syntax estra macros I can use on any instance okay there yet yeah I hope everybody finds that useful so not only using syntax register macros in scripting fields but now you can use them in service portal as well thank you thank you all right Craig take us into the the depths of mood servers alright okay so yeah we're going to talk about mid service today and I'm actually going to do an install and kind of go through that whole public apology and all that kind of good stuff but at first before we get started and that's your question have you or do you is a mid server there's two difficult answers it's 5050 yes or no I'm just curious to see how many people actually use MIT servers that connects ServiceNow to your internal enterprise or and do you have a cloud environment and you want to do some operations on those machines and virtual machines in your cloud environment you can spell mid server in there as well you can have yeah or maybe I haven't installed it in my house yeah on a wrapper Tara so yeah I'm trying to remember do I go ahead move do their results now or yeah we given everybody a fair shake go to the next slide you'll see the reason yeah all right you're good I don't see their percentage yeah that's pretty good all right for that right in the tag along again perfectly wil will present some people with some information they didn't know or or didn't know that that makes every seven days so what is the mid server and it stands for management history tested and discovery to administer job application that runs on Windows or Linux that's very flexible on where you can put it up and it connects up to your instance and look monitors the ECC queue and the NPP queue is really just a table that hosts what functions that not just the mister but other things too but the mystery monitors for midterm instructions even time we're doing running the PowerShell we run it a rest hall or whatever it monitors that table for instructions and doesn't so there's no connectivity from service snail into your network more it's showing the your mid server that's inside your network out so you don't have to worry about firewall rules and stuff and we'll get into that a little bit so in terms of facilitate the communication and moving the data you can copy files next forth between service now and your instance and communicate with external sources and services like ad or Microsoft ad or something like that so why would you use a mid server at all and I kind of talk about that just a little bit here that service now is outside your network and then you of course are behind your firewall and inside your own network so some ServiceNow applications actually require a mid server to function properly because we are possible can't Traverse that firewall to get into your network or if we do and you got a whole nother security issue going on we need to you need to be behind the firewall some of the applications that do require and are discovering the orchestration because we're having workflows that try to talk the end of course like I said discovery will be looking for machines and trying to interrogate machine service mapping event management clouded information service cloud management and operation tell just flow designer now using the mid server and of course research REST API calls no message API um you know you can't do from your instance but you have no servers doing that they come and distributed load and you want something talking straight to your your instance other applications that I see and you can see a list there alturas Microsoft SCCM LANDesk HP openview and the list goes on and on volatile applications back to make these those commits over which of smell so this is how it works here's the magic behind the curtain and then server is installed on the system of your network again it can be Linux or it can be Windows and there's some citrus and I put a bitly link there so you would be able to find it easily enough it's definitely slash mid Rick or EQ and you can look at all the requirements there just to give you a quick rundown there's memory requirements that you gotta watch out for Java we need to install Java used to be included with the mid server now it's not because I think you understand reality or size of the packages for prevention early but you feeling felt job on your own machine and then you install the service on the server I connect to your ServiceNow instance via SSL so there's no connecting like I said through your firewall to your internal network it's cutting out so generally speaking you have to modify your firewall or network apology to give to service now this is just kind of connect and work and the mid server connect constantly monitors for activity so it'll help that ECC queue and and look for instruction to do if there's nothing to do it just kind of sits idle and keeps checking I could fit on constantly there's no charge for mid server so don't worry about cost some services like discovery mapping of course have additional cost that they do require a good serve and to give you an illustration as I've already talked to you a little bit here's your Steam DB and ServiceNow up in the top left hand corner and there's your firewall that's not on fire it's just an indication that it's your firewall bricks on fire and then there's your internal network with all your different applications with the mid server is able to talk to those you know also keep in mind you can and have more than one mid server of course talking to one instance and because you may have different areas that will give them IP ranges that they're in charge of that when they pull a command out of ECC cube the mid server knows which one needs to talk about you know whether it can handle it or not and also by capabilities there are capabilities like PowerShell or FSH you know like you don't want a right charmer on PowerShell on in this box well unless you want to do that on a Windows machine so there's just a simple diagram of where the mid server kind of fits in all of this and you can't have the pockets or talk through a proxy if you need to to get that out to the Internet so there's there's those options as well so we're going to start looking into some of the different things Nakula linux we get from running the mid server and there's a whole minute or dashboard that not only gives you some insight on maybe one of them going to use going a little high it this one's getting used a little bit more you're gonna get some graphs and get an idea and what's going on and we'll take a quick look on during my demo I won't have a lot of data as you can see some pretty graphs but you get an idea of what you're what you're looking for and of course if screenshot has like it's like form it servers at the top and it will also give you some there's an area that gave you some information on like errors or something to look out for of course the installation is pretty easy actually so when you install Java on your Windows machine we have a installer for Windows not for Linux for Windows and the Installer will walk you through you with these settings you can fill in the information what's your username what's your password where your ServiceNow instance with Earl and then of course you can get a proxy information and test it'll let you test your connection before you actually try and spin a finishing and then once it's done spin up the network starting the server and then it will create the service and the way you go now what we're going to do today is I'm going to show you I can I'll show you the screen shot against the light and it's taller but we're going to configure our service I'm in by hand and I'll show you some information about the wrapper file and you can make some changes and that brings us to our dinner so let me switch over here screen share we do the whole screen alright so here I am I met on ServiceNow instance and the first things first you need to create a user for your mid server to be able to log into otherwise your answer would not have access to service now to do anything so we're going to go to users and I'll show you already have a user setup but I do want to show you one thing in small document server and you can see absol Alfred Pennyworth sees our Butler so to speak for records or user and it's going to be our mid server user and when we create the mid server user one thing you need to make sure you add is the mid server role these other soap roles are all inherited you can see didn't hear discount the mister roelle gifts in that gives us user access to be able to login and interact with ECC queue and run and crates and records and whatnot of course permission to plot tells gramma system what administer the role is what you need so you would just click Edit and add the net server role again that's all there is to it it makes the user make it a good strong password I can't stress that enough because you don't want some rope hacker getting them on your system because you have a central password on your mid server account but once you set up that count and we've got that part ready to go now you need to go download your mid server so where do you get that from them so if we go to mid server if they were here since downloads now if you need some installation instructions and this will take you to the dock site they talk about everything that I'm talking about today it's running to point that out to you if you go to downloads you see there are several options here we have 32-bit and 64-bit for Linux and Windows now what we're going to do today by editing the file is pretty much the same on Linux they have a config file to have the wrapper file it's all the same only difference with the windows of course you have the nice installer and what we'll do is we'll right-click on that and we'll do copy link location it might be a little different in your browser but yeah copy link location and then you're able to download it you know I you can down click on this and it will start downloading for me I wanted to download it straight directly to the mid server so I didn't have to try to upload it again somewhere again you can see there's a link here to installation instructions if you get a little lost or you want to find a little more about something let's go over to my mid server alright and lo behold I've already download how to keep you guys from having to watch the paint dry come on this file we downloaded it and now we need to extract it so we want to put it in a certain place you can click this emitter or whatever you would like on your hard drive but I'll try to keep it simple right off the roof make a folder called you know folder called mid mid server and extracted there so you can just you know do extract all and make servers like that when you hit extracting and start extracting it into that folder now it will make another folder inside nets or and I'll show you that I've already extracted it cuz again I know you don't want to watch for you on that a mid server it makes an agent folder it'll go in there here's all the files there's not much really the interactive except for a couple of config files so the first one we're going to look at and again you'll want to consult your memory and everything from this there's windows machines if you don't want to I'm in server that's running on too little memory and make sure you have that Java already installed already have it installed on this machine and you want Java a JRE 1.8 or higher and there's links to that I think in the open JDK website and we'll try and put some links to that with these with the show so we've already got the permits that were extracted here's the config file which will interact with that in just a minute but that's the one that really has all the configuration on how to talk to the ServiceNow instance that we're working with and under cost you'll see here's a wrapper calm and a wrapper - override calm there's a lot of settings in here I'll I'll show you I don't really interact with them walk the walk the wrapper drops but you'll see there's a lot of settings on here talking about location property files on the custom I don't work with this so much what we'll do is we will work with the record override there's only a few settings that you need to change or if it's in one pencil around here you really don't need to change at all I just wanted to point this out to you that you can change the name of the mid server and containers there's other settings and you can analyze you know way right here the SPM is for me if you were selling to midterms on here you would extract the file to another folder and you would come into the wrapper call override and change this maybe to missing theme is to because this is the name of the service that's on Windows and you don't want to install a second one with the same name because it will affect the service and they wouldn't know which which one to start it's confusing you can even give it a nice display name so if this was a Windows mid server one that will be identified when we go look at the services and you know what I will say that and we'll take a look at in a minute so ranbir the rocker - override he come in here to name the rapper name and the display name you don't have to do it you know that's hard to do it but let's go to config complex ml seizing opening time all right right here is the meat of what you got to change it's just the first few lines down we want to put in the Earl of your instance so we'll go back over here to my machine and we'll get the check now to got lamb duck service - now huh let's plug that in there and then we want to give us the username and password that has access to that this machine will should have access to service now for light I've got mid server and then we want to give it the correct password yeah a good secure password that would be this one I know that one yeah and right here you can name your mid server so this was what the name is going to represent insert ourselves and when you're going to look at your mid servers you'll see a nice name that makes sense to you so we'll call this one windows server you want yeah so this is the first letter in this is the properties for service now when we change the medical and the rapper brush was for the services paneling and windows so we'll say that and we are ready to start it up but I wanted to show you before we start I wanted to show you the Installer I mentioned a moment ago that windows having Nutella and I'm going to recommend that you right-click and run this as administrator if so it has access to be able to do what it needs to do on the system you'll see to take a moment and then the screenshot will pop up and it already has some information popping to the end of it the config file ourselves but there's a service or the service down in central scrutiny there's the username and password and we'll pick that's missing okay and we can test the connection you can see it's doing some work in the background and the test kit tested successfully so we'll go next there's a some other things you can change again there's the wrapper name and the mid server name we've already did that because we edited the new config file and sorry that's pretty much it once we're done you hit next you can install it I'm going to stop here well we've got everything set up right click run as administrator you can see it's starting up it's created the service services if they verify excusing I'll take a quick little one and if we scroll down and those mitts everyone and there it is that you could say that's for the description and the kind of name command there's a sensitive which we saw in the config file I'll close that now the machines now that it's running at switch back over to our ServiceNow instance and let's take a look at the mid service we're going to go to servers and we should see Windows mid server one area now before you can use this mid server you have to validate it so to validate it it's really as simple as clicking the validate button but what are the do is it'll set up the machine it'll send us your keys so that everything is encrypted from Indian and we'll hear invalid state and it asked me what kind of criteria we're going to allow all applications to use this otherwise I turn this off we can specify on what applications we want all capabilities SSH PowerShell any of those kind of functions you can turn that on or off same thing with our few ranges if you wanted to limit this one mid server to one set of rain one range in your data center we can turn that off and we can specify that later I'm not going to go into all that but you can find that in the docs file for all the four elements server installation so we're going to say that I wanted to build just one server to be able to do everything you can see it's already been validated it's up it's kind of doing that in the backend you can say but here's where you're going to go in and configure you can do parameters support applications actually ranges capabilities and we're not going to change any lab because that's a little bit outside of the scope for today but you can find all that in the docs and modify those that you need so let's go take a look at the dashboard and you can see I'm going to close that and you can see we've got med server status 1 if we had more than one you would see it listed here and I want to show you this mid server issue there's not really an issue I had that lab that mid server user created first before I was even attempted to attend today connected with that mid server so when was letting me know that I had a user with a mid server role now associated with the mid server and it also tells you that there was no login attempt that there were lifesaver much you know which I think it's pretty important because you know your data is in here the innocence you're seeing via you want to make sure it's safe I just to show you how to go to this mr. Ritchie and I can mark it as acknowledge to resolve and update it so nobody else would come in and take action on it and I mentioned earlier that I probably would not have any graph data but you can come in here and see the CPU on the max load on the memory and that kind of stuff as your as your systems are running and we don't have it you know anything dated it to disappearance like I'm sure I'm gonna do a quick test now that we've got our mixer truck it's connected to this instance I'm going to create this is a very simple test but what it does I have a workflow in the vacuum and the workflow has a PowerShell activity and I can show you a clinic workflow editor how we're doing on time okay yes I'm good okay so here's the workflow I made a custom PowerShell to get data it's it's going to get some system information from that whatever system we tell if they go talk to and have a run script that the world populates information as it comes back let's go to new let's say host 127 actually there's a few months right here and we'll save this record and I got another new action and we'll go out and let it take them on this but it's now putting the the process that starts the workflow they weren't too close put some information in the ECC queue and if I have them over to I can show you these pieces here and other data they came back but there's a system information that we got back from our machine and you can see the versions you know the windows system root this is just general powershell information and of course you could do in power show you want on this machine and you can also have this midterm we're talking into your machines inside of the network what the right credentials which should be able to interact with your network so because they can look at the that context or the key more than context all context and let's go look at that ECG here now it is a little confusion if you have to come in here and take a look at this when it sends stuff in and out in the mid sir keep in mind the cue name is a little different so into it is is where the data that comes into service now the output is what we sent through the mincer so it's from the ServiceNow point of view so just kind of keep that month and here's the raw data if we go back there you go that's pretty much it is there any questions or anything no well yeah we got some questions you're on a field guide yeah there was a question around the java version what version of java is required to run this we know that it doesn't come with job anymore because of licensing issues from Oracle so what does somebody need to go get in download yes it's in the docs you can go I think if you just going to open JDK and it's you know all folder open JDK let's go download course something you're in the right spot but you want JRE 1.8 which I think and listen is 8 got something but you'll find it in there so we do support open JDK that was another question that came up you don't have to go to Oracle and get the JRE ok sorry 15 up in here huh yeah unrelated work but you cannot intervene I'm you know I'm not seeing anything Craig but you know slide is flashing a little bit on this end so I don't know if you stopped your screen shot or not but that's all right oh I I did I'm sorry I was trying to tell I'm gonna share but if you get open JDK you should be able to find it I've installed I've used Oracle's I've used open JDK there's a couple of others but I would recommend one of those three today another common question I'm seeing is do you if you have a dev test and prod instance do you need a separate for each of those yes you can't have one minute sir we're logging into three different machines so yeah that would be the case and you know a lot of people do that because they they have a test network on their local internal thanks oh you yeah you really you don't want to keep those separate if you're especially where you're working with a D or something like that you don't want to you know we'll move a bunch of users that we're supposed to be removed so yes I would recommend having your anomalous we recommend you have to have them in separate admit server per instance source analysis you could get however put multiple Midsummer's on the same physical or virtual server correct yeah I didn't mention that earlier yes you can do that he would extract like I'm when I extracted the file the file you put it in a tub room folder at this special folder a name folder for itself and you would have its own thing you can have more than one just remember though edit that Oviraptor override a cop file and give it a different name if you have more than one mixer on there and i'm talking about the service name not necessarily but name name so what would be other than other than talking to different instances what would be the advantage of having multiple needs on the same server instead of just increasing the resources for a given mid that I would say that having multiple meant new servers on one machine I think you know if you wanted to put your mixer put all your eggs in one basket so to speak and you had a test run product you would have to have like five machines you know for all your lip service you could just put them all on one I don't know that'd be really another advantage etcetera maybe one of them is in charge of accepting events only and maybe one of the in charge of different discovery only but it's only the same machines I don't know what kind of advantage you get from that but maybe just accepting exists and such that can be taxing on machine I would have to do anyone I would add to that and say you know we could do fault tolerance or load balancing same way to if you multiple mids all talking to you to say your province and you had three mins on the same let's call it a VM for now that is whether it's a VM or a physical machine doesn't matter if you've got three of them talking to you production since you could like you said give them different tasks and say this one is for discovery this one is for event management this one is for integrations then if there's an issue with one of those you're not impacting the other one if the service goes down or or something of that nature well even the other well even I might want to you may want to split up on two different machine this physical machine yeah you could obviously do that and spread the spread the load around on a different DMS I think that the more on that story is that there's a lot of options you can do you can put them on one machine or spread them out it's very flexible yeah yep if you did you mention licensing yes I did earlier some of the products and we we have this requirements or our extra cost but not the measure itself you can you know you can have ten minute service and it's just fun impulse engine extreme all right we have over a hundred other questions that need answering but I think we're gonna have to get those offline again even through them fast enough right now last one so I wanted to go a couple of quick things I got a few more slides here one of those considerations when upgrading your midterm sometimes permissions are on Linux as an issue I ran into that before where I was like why miss missile and I felt all upgrading is because some other files in have the right permissions so that they couldn't have the rifle also know that we had this problem before I think was from Kingston Katrina member of the King to correct one of them the age of the mid server was an issue because they change the encryption up from one version of the other so when we up when outdated my employee instance to where were version at Kingston I guess and my mr. Rico working because signal update so that's some considering any looking to download and reinstall it if it's at the end of the world but just keep that in mind that yes there was little our birthday so if you let them yeah and if your network topology has changed and you always doesn't have a Chicago office or whatever you know is kind of keep them up and you can study things out and you know have some that are in one office in another to just keep on you know pathology can be an issue there's some best practices like I mentioned topology location location location that's very important the time to get data from one from your internal network to a mid server can be greatly reduced if you have some mixers where the data is actually at or close to it they keep that in mind memory space requirements again they're referring the dots I could talk about it here but the the combination is kind of cut along so you may want to look at that and when I say combinations how much memory you had an extra memory now if you have more than one minute that's something else they do share some memory space but then you would have an extra one gig per minute better than if you have one machine it's got any gigs you know for one for one machine I'm saying of they kind of share the majority of that memory because of the nature of the job environment so if you have two minutes on there you can reduce your memory cost because we kind of shared that might be a advantage having one on one machine threads in memory you want to keep an eye on that because you can increase or decrease that the more threads you got the more men are you going to think but the faster you can get things done so there's a balance that seesaw balance that you so everybody kind of deals with on defense here you have that kind of situation and of course local network user permissions you want to make sure that you're when you're consistent you're acting with that your mentor was talking to you inside your network has little right user premier and not like car launch you want to make sure that it's an air down to what you need or subset of what you need you're gonna want to delete all of your ad users or containers or whatever by accident keep that in mind that that's also like I said kind of a best practice for you have a pressed environment make attachment server a kind of segment all at all and as our reference information you can go to the docks sign of dock stop service -
