[Music] [Applause] [Music] hey [Music] hey everyone i'm joe mihika and i am your host for today's episode of tech glam life i'm also joined by my fellow co-host doreen hey everybody i'm dorian peppers so today we are joined by our two awesome special guests ricardo duque and ken steele from our buraki team you know what i'm really super excited about is the capture the flag game joe remember how we played capture the flag at the last meraki training session we went to and i kicked your butt that was so much fun you know what's awesome about the whole thing is that we challenge ourselves and we get to see who can answer the questions the fastest and capture the flag so today we're going to play that game and we're going to be giving away some awesome marathi gear as prizes cool let's get started perfect all right well welcome everyone to meraki's uh capture the flag session for tech glam you know ricardo and i are very excited uh to be a part of this we've done this a couple of times uh for those of you who don't know me i am ken steele i am the moroccan product sales specialist i live in carlsbad california and i've been with cisco meraki for five years now my my background actually is uh engineering i've been a network engineer for 20 years um and just you know i've been a meraki uh as a meraki sc for three years before i transitioned to the product sales specialist and and and the real honest to god reason why i made that trench transition is you know i've been an engineer all my life i've worked on a number of different uh solutions i've i've represented uh other vendors that sold you know competitive solutions and coming to meraki not only did i fall in love with the product but i've met so many customers like a few people on the call that have already kind of voiced their opinion i've seen customers you know fall in love with the product and so that's why i kind of made this career choice but today we have we have a fun event planned some of you may have uh participated in this event before but we have this fun capture the flag game where you go through different scenarios and you're just navigating through the meraki dashboard trying to find that you know the answer to it and as you uh answer those questions you can see a live leaderboard of where you're at and at the end of the game we're going to play for about an hour and at the end of the game we have 10 different prizes to give away uh to the top 10 people and you know we'll go in order of whoever comes in first place gets to pick what they want so the prizes that i have that you can see here is i have a meraki uh eight port switch um i also have a meraki camera both of these will come with i believe three-year licenses and then a whole bunch of different meraki swag to choose from between this shirt um that i'm sure would look better on you than me i have this cool little um kind of a it's got a whole bunch of different letters and stuff that you can use but it lights up something fun especially for the kids kind of like a like a whiteboard kind of thing we have water bottles i actually also have these wireless chargers i have one black one one white one that not only does it charge your phone right you would be able to fit it here but you can also charge air pods in the back as well as an apple phone so um those are the cool prizes that i have and i know ricardo's got some cool prizes himself so with that ricardo i'll hand it off to you okay perfect guys good to see you everyone for i mean my name is shukari luke for all of you that don't know me yet um i'm the meraki technical solutions architect just partnered with ken carlsbad local too uh i mean i will be moving in one in about one month to temecula but still just living in the so-called area uh and i've been working with cisco for about seven eight years pretty much uh and now in the miraculou for about two years we are pretty much a little bit more than two years now and like ken said the idea of this is you know just having fun explain a little bit how marathi can help you on your networks to do all the troubleshooting the assurance the end-to-end visibility and and that's pretty much the topics on the capture the flat game so just a compliment just to compliment a little bit about the prices i have a meraki access point wi-fi six ap right here and also a couple of miraculous sensors and also some swag you know bottles and chairs and all that so but probably that's that's probably one of the biggest price for sure right um so with that being said i don't know if we want to just start guys yes wait so you're telling me so you're telling me i can wear the exact same shirts that you're wearing ricardo and you're wearing ken like the shirts the exact shirts you're wearing like right now you can send them to any of our winners with your autographs right is that what i'm hearing it's it's true joe but you'll probably look better it'll probably look better on you because you got you know you're in better shape than at least i am you know ricardo's probably in shape but i'm sure you'll feel a little bit better than me so yeah not only can you wear this but you'll actually even look better there you go well i think i know what will definitely look better for today is you know we have some questions you know that just to kind of help us you know tee up the session i think we can obviously go straight into the game but you know what i think you guys are really good at dropping some knowledge um so i have some you know we have means we have some really some simple questions they want to ask you um the obvious one is what is meraki you know we obviously hear it all the time but what is it and why does it differ from everything that we sell at cisco yeah i know that we have some veteran you know meraki uh engineers on the on the call but for those of you who are new to meraki um you know a lot of people think of meraki uh that aren't too familiar with meraki as just cloud managed wireless and i i and i understand that um the reason being is because that's where meraki started over 15 years ago so as you can see here in this diagram it actually shows the history of meraki where it started in 2006 as a cloud managed wireless solution and when when the founders of meraki started they were they're trying to solve for a couple of uh problems one they wanted to simplify the architecture right so uh removing the need to have on-prem hardware to manage you know your networks but not only from an uh simplifying the architecture by moving that on-prem hardware to the cloud but also simplifying the interface to manage it so if you can look at this diagram on the left you'll see that all those little icons those small circles represent a different meraki product so in 2006 we first came out with our wireless access points in 2011 we came out with our firewall then in 2012 that's when cisco acquired meraki right and now it's been nine years since meraki has been a part of cisco and obviously being part of cisco the worldwide leader in networking um you know that's when meraki really exploded in growth because um you know really we got all that r d research that just you know they really heavily uh invested moroccan rocky's been one of the fastest growing acquisitions in cisco's history so since then now you can see about every single year we come out with a new solution so we have switches we have mdm to manage your mobile devices a video security cellular gateway now we have sensors right so every you know the product portfolio keeps growing so now it's not cloud managed wireless anymore it's just a cloud-managed end-to-end you know ip solution and it continues to grow um but and there's a lot of obviously you know competitors that are moving towards the cloud as well but what really differentiates meraki is the dashboard right and that's really one of the purposes of today's uh event is just to get people more comfortable with navigating the dashboard and how intuitive it is so on the right hand side you can see how meraki has grown over the years we still own to date even though we started the industry 15 years ago we still own 68 of the cloud managed uh wireless market share um no other competitor is over 10 in cloud and in market share for cloud managed wireless um you can see that our customer base has grown but i think the most impressive statistic here is actually the number of api calls that we we see in a given day we didn't open up our apis until late 2017 so really 2018 three years ago is when we started opening up our apis and you can see over 100 million api calls on a daily basis you know eric was just talking about how he's using api to create his own custom automation and that's what really unleashes the power of meraki so another thing that people think of when they think of meraki is they think simple right and so you know what what unfortunately sometimes that implies some people when they think of simple they think of basic right but that's not what meraki is so ricardo if you go to the next slide you know while meraki is simple it simplifies you know the management of your network it is also extremely powerful and so this is an analogy that i like to use is comparing traditional networking with meraki is like comparing a ferrari race car with a tesla right so on the left-hand side in order to get that car ready for race day you need a team of engineers in order to design that car to build it right you need a professional driver to maintain it you need this big pick crew to constantly you know keep tweaking it right and you'll see when you're driving it you have all these knobs and settings um you know in order to actually operate it on the right-hand side you have you know the tesla right the tesla has that beautiful dashboard very simple to use now if anyone on this call has ever driven a tesla before you know it can also be extremely powerful so much so that there's an actual setting looking at that dashboard right there um there is a button that you can click that's called uh what's that what's it called again uh ludicrous christmas mode all you have to do is click that button and now that car is the fastest car in the world at a bestest production car in the world uh a hundred and twenty thousand dollar tesla you can uh it can be a five hundred thousand dollar lamborghini off the line in a um in a quarter mile race by going into ludicrous mode and all it is is a simple click of that button and what i love about that is not only how simple it is to engage but that ludicrous mode was an upgrade that was downloaded from the cloud so one day that a car owner in 2017 of a tesla they woke up one day that ludicrous mode magically appeared and their car got faster so that car became more powerful over time right that's one of the big benefits of meraki so if you go to the next slide um it shows that you know one this is this is uh i think the the way that most customers are used to managing meraki is through the dashboard right you have that beautiful you know uh intuitive dashboard um with all the native automation but on top of that we have our apis it's just another way to uh be able to manage all those devices at the bottom so all those devices at the bottom that's what your network is on the left hand side you can see how you can manage it with the dashboard but on the right hand side is all the apis that you're also able to leverage right so those you can use those for your own custom automation so not um not not just the native automation with the dashboard if you want to customize your own automation that's how you can leverage our apis also you know being able to deliver you know business uh use cases uh whether it's you know some of our location analytics or video analytics but also being able to integrate with other third-party vendor solutions we have a whole marketplace of third-party solutions that we integrate with with our apis but finally you know uh talking about how the product gets uh more powerful over time ricotta if you go to the next slide this is kind of an example very similar to um tesla where if you bought a meraki access point in this case 2016 right you can see that over time that that top timeline shows a lot of like the top features that have been rolled out just in the last four years and these are features that just magically appear in your dashboard one day right and so that same license and the same hardware that you bought in 2016 you know can support a lot of the features that just continually get rolled over or rolled out over time on the bottom you can see that we also obviously heavily invest in new hardware so it's not just upgrading the hardware of the current solutions that we have but also coming out with brand new products whether it's coming up with our cameras or you know just recently in the last year our sensors and so we're constantly coming out with new hardware and new features but it just goes to show that your meraki solution just becomes more powerful over time so joe that's kind of like the the long-winded answer of what is meraki and what is the uh the benefit and how how does it differentiate between other solutions so uh wait so random question so when are we gonna acquire tesla and start uh bringing our software into that well you know what i what but what i'm so fascinated about with tesla is that the auto industry has been around for so long right and you have all the big manufacturers right and now you have tesla and if you if you notice in the news everyone's not trying to catch up with tesla tesla just began so many years ago and now everyone's trying to be the next tesla they all want they're all focused on electric but they're all focused on those different you know uh dashboard experiences and it's just amazing how destructive tesla has become in a industry that's been around forever and that's what meraki has done i mean networking has been around for so many years and now meraki has become the disrupter a different way of doing the same thing i mean tesla's just a car but it's just so different and now all the manufacturers that have been around for so long now are competing with tesla so there you go sorry if i get passed about it it's all good that's pretty passionate so my question to you ricardo is this so today is all about visibility and determining root cause right we want to be able to quickly solve our infrastructure problems and we want to be able to identify what caused it and be able to explain it to the stakeholders so how can meraki help businesses and it teams with network assurance and visibility and analytics and you know to improve and speed up troubleshooting how can meraki do that for us oh that that's a pretty interesting question because let me let me just start with that story so i've been working in it for about probably 20 years right and i used to be a network at mean and i.t i mean and pretty much 20 years ago i was you know having a dream two dreams the first one was be able to have some kind of updated network topology right and some tool who allows me having some way to automatically update my network topology my devices in order to do faster troubleshooting right yeah the second dream was what about to have some tool that just allows me or helps me to do end-to-end visibility from the client perspective right because every single time that you have an issue and a network issue right i mean network is always guilty right unless you prove that that we are innocence always that way right that way so how to have some tool that just can help you to prove that sometimes is the application right right or sometimes it's not the network itself probably is the end devices or other kind of you know root cause so with meraki we pretty much were able to cover those two dreams so yes the first one is okay how to help and how to have an end-to-end analytics assurance and visibility across your entire network right so what you say what what you are seeing here is pretty much um from the client perspective right how we are able to leverage all that data from the client right be able to see okay where and how that line is connected into the meraki switch into meraki access point into moraki mx and as far as you have more and more meraki components on the full stack network you will have you know more and more visibility and end-to-end capabilities of course even from the application layer so you will be able to have something like okay from this client right from this client from this specific end device i don't know maybe the office 365 or sale force is not working well right and be able to isolate that and be able to see that in a real-time dashboard that's real that's real power right and it's not that simple to do it because if you don't have that kind of tools how you can even do that right you will need to have to come online switches you do the correlation probably do some packet captures and trying to review logs here logs here logs there logs in the firewall logs in the right and trying to isolate all that info correlated all that info it's will take you forever right so when you finish to do all that correlation probably that the issue is already solved right or probably is not an issue or probably you are just working in another company um so so that kind of tools and i will show you in a minute how that works just allow you and on the meraki dashboard to use real you know advanced and guides or shooting capabilities right even we have now like ken mentioned before some kind of those new features that we just add and customers just start to use right like for instance the smart alerts capabilities right improve the automation and be able to define right some kind of threshold and even use machine learning and you know ai and be able to automatically adjust those thresholds for you just depending on what is the specific requirement for your network for your application right and also be able to of course use all that info not only for doing some kind of reactive stuff right also be proactive and monitoring the health of your network and be able to see okay how my network is behaving for i don't know last day last week and probably i'm just starting to see some trends on my traffic or probably you know the one utilization is just going over 80 percent now on my links so probably i just instead of just wait until i have the fire right uh be able to do some proactive uh you know actions before and of course the good thing about that is that all that operational simplification it's available now right so we have in the meraki right now happening i will show you in a minute timelines with all the easy to use and easy to understand noraki approach right be able to put the right data the right time do filtering by client by network by access points and all that and which is one of my favorite parts be able to have a full stack assurance and i show you that in a minute because that's that's to me at least is probably one of the most useful thing that we have in the dashboard so let me share the dashboard because i really want to answer your question so not only those slides i really want to show you a real time a real us or a real time data from one of our customers who allows us to show real data okay so i will let me go ahead and share my screen real quick to just show you how what i'm talking about so this one let me see if you are able okay yeah now i have so does that network is one of our customers okay so if you see here right now in that network they have over a thousand devices from the last date okay so and i'm able to see even from the client perspective right how those devices are working right and just a pretty simple info right here i mean that's not that much but it's super useful let's say that i'm i want to know i don't know what is the user that's this customer using the one x for the wireless and from the one from the wire too so just be able to see just with a simple click here what is the username that some of those users are reviewing let me just filter here probably for some wireless in order to have client type wireless and now you see that and all of those devices are disconnected right now right but you are able to see what is the specific active directory user right that those devices are using for connect yes that info is useful right okay but let me go beyond because we are talking about troubleshooting right so let's say that i have some user okay this is one user and the user just give me a call to say to tell me hey i'm having issues with my iphone right so i can just do a quick search for that user this is the user id right the active directory user and see okay okay here is the iphone associated to that specific user right so if i now if i go and click on that one i can just open a different time a different app and see that that specific client right associated our user to the user and wu right and have a lot of info here right from the client perspective right from the client perspective cell so i'm able to see what is the access point in which that access in which that client is connected and actually if i want to go and open the topology i can just go click here and you will see something like that and real real-time topology right for that specific network right and you are able to see here this which is interesting you see that here there is real time topology so if i just go with my mouse and move my mouse over there you see that that one is on a stack it both devices are offline and if i i if i just gonna go ahead and click on one of the switches i will be able to just automatically redirect to that switch right but let me show you let's say that i'm receiving a call for i don't know they in this customer they have a they have a spell so i'm having issues with a chapel with with one of the chapel switches so if i go ahead and just search for chapel you see that now automatically it's just highlighted that switch and if i'm just go and review the link or just move the the my mouse over that specific link you will be you will see in real time that that that switch is connected to the data center 3 switch on the port 15 okay real time topology right so how is that useful for the torturing right it's super super nice but now let me go with it okay so let's say let me just come back to the client right and now you see that here we have a topology right for that specific client okay if i go back let me just probably open this one too this is another client okay let me just go and open a different one to show you the difference right here same user but now is a macbook right it's macbook pro and if you see here just moving my mouse i'm able to see okay what is the device right all the assurance info like a 360 view of that particular device right and if i when i just go deep and do multiple shooting the only thing that i need to do is just go under all these tabs that we are including on the dashboard so let's say that i want to see okay how the connections are working or have been working for that client during the last day or last week or last 12 hours or whatever right and see you have all these amazing data focus on that particular planning right so hey 76 of the of all the connections has been successful but if you see here it's also highlighting that the customer that specific client is having some authentication issues so let's say that i want to see okay what is happening with the authentication and you just you just need to click here and automatically you will see now all the connection lock for that particular client right just related with that particular authentication right and even the failure reason in order that you can just go ahead and do the troubleshooting and even if you move your mouse over the info now you also can see what could be the common cause of that issue right so we are working actually to even include remediation capabilities right in order that can be the next phase of this right and just be able okay we realize that the vlan the native villain is not the right native villain on that report you want that the meraki dashboard just remediate that for you and just be able to click there and just like that automatically remedy that each right so we are working on that as we speak by the way okay also this is from the territory right so what happened now with the performance sometimes the client is connected right it's connected but it's just some slow performance applications or something like that or probably the signal is not that good and again per client you will be able to have performance info for that specific client even be able to see what is the top application that the customer is using and a lot of different useful info to see okay i don't know let's say that the signal quality is good enough probably the customer is connected to the wireless but probably the signal quality is not good enough so you can see right here right and actually if you move your mouse there is a bunch of info over here actually if you see there is even roaming roaming events happenings right now so when the when the client just moved from one ap to another ap you will see that info right here in order that you can isolate i'm just having you know the right visibility in where and why is you know it's that happening and of course a bunch of my of more data right the channel utilization you know the latency the data rates and so far so long so a lot of end-to-end visibility that's great the the latest the the sorry the final piece that i want to show you to is that okay i'm focusing the client but what happened on the application side right we also have a product that we call meraki inside right which is part of the meraki mx suite and with that inside product you have three different health capabilities the web application help they wanna please the one health right for monitoring all the one links and also voip help in order to monitor voip servers right let me show you on the web app how how that works so now i'm able to just define which specific web applications how i want to monitor in right let's say office 365 let's say netflix right this customer is monitoring netflix i don't know why but they they want to monitor in netflix okay uh so and if you see actually netflix netflix is doing some smart threshold so we are we are helping the customer to automatically update the threshold for that application or you can just go ahead and define a manual threshold if you want but if you see here there is some red here on the server side okay so now if i just go and show just netflix and i click on the server you see okay it's the quality is not working good but okay how can i how can i just realize what is the issue where is why why the inside is showing there is some issue with that server if i just go click here on the trends and now i'm going to the servers tab let me just wait this is i'm just using all the last week data so probably that will take a while let me just switch to the hey ricardo i hope you're not giving away all the answers for the uh capture the flag competition you're gonna make it you're gonna lose no no no [Laughter] so it's taking a while but okay now if you see here on the servers miracle insights automatically discover all the netflix servers ip alves for you it's automatically so we ne we i mean we didn't include those servers and netflix is just associated to those servers and see you can see here that some of those servers are having a pretty bad response time 17 seconds 16 seconds is a pretty bad response time for a server so that's pretty much the reason why netflix is not working good right so now you can grab your phone call netflix and say hey i'm having issues with this specific server three point two one two that one whatever okay and now it's not a network issue anymore so now you are proving that the network is not guilty okay how awesome is that right okay that's all that i want to show you on the demo um i mean i i don't want to just spend the entire time go over the demo but i hopefully i i answered your question oh you did that was that was a great demonstration and you know what i really liked about the demo is that it was live customer data you know typically with demos you get like a lab environment with a canned stage you know demonstration with can data but this was really good because it was customer data it was actual live experiences of other people's you know experiences for lack of a better word right this is like legitimate data that you can actually gather so that i think it was great thank you yeah i want to know what they're watching on netflix man like it has to be something really really good and important that we're missing out that's causing the pick of the phone you know you know what that this this that's good that you answer that you asked us because now if you go under clients right you can see what are the specific clients using netflix okay so do you even know okay i don't know who is this guy but you can just go and review this client and see who is dorm and say hey what are you watching so much netflix right it's you're supposed to be working awesome great stuff um so i think maybe it's time to kick off the game ken ricardo what are your thoughts yeah game on let's do it that's over here for it it's uh you know i think ricardo walked you through a little bit may have showed you a little too much because now uh now you're gonna know exactly where to go with some of these because i know this was focused on troubleshooting so i started doing some great troubleshooting school uh skills and tools that we have so uh keep that in mind when you're going through this because i think that'll help [Music] so [Music] so of course you know if you have any questions um on everything that we talked about in today's call you know feel free to reach out to ricardo and ken thanks again for being awesome members of the meraki organization we love to have you guys on and of course reach out to your ams and scs uh we're always happy to continue these conversations absolutely and today's episode will be posted on my youtube channel tech glam tv there you'll find episodes of tech glam live and other videos related to cisco so if you guys missed our last month's episode on software defined access it's now posted on teclam tv so go back and check it out and we've reached the end of our show awesome thanks for joining excellent yeah we'd like to thank you guys for for hosting this with us you know it was it was very very exciting i mean i loved it hey guys thank you so much for this you know having fun with us learning a little bit and enjoy the rest of your day thank you guys that was a lot of fun thank you yeah it was fun thanks [Music] you
