so a few weeks ago I published a video about why I think you should wait to buy a new 2020 model TV and I stand by that there's lots of great reasons mostly future proofing you can check out the full video right there if you like however I know that that is not a realistic situation for a lot of folks you may be in the market for a TV right now and it's actually a pretty good time to buy before the new ones come out the older ones are a lot less expensive and if you are looking these two models should be on your shortlist I am of course talking about the TCL six series and the Vizio m-series two different mid tier tvs that offer a lot of performance for a very good price value is kind of the theme here but which one is going to be better for you that's what we've got to figure out so let's dig write it so here we have the M series quantum this is the 65 inch model and it is the m8 variant if you saw the full review for this TV you know there's an m8 and m7 in and m6 the m6 is a very inexpensive model that you'll probably find at Walmart and it's not even in the same league the m7 model has fewer zones of local dimming and less peak brightness m7 has 20 zones this has 90 zones so for the sake of this comparison we're definitely looking at the m8 you're looking at about 700 bucks for this particular model and aesthetically it's a really nice-looking TV very comparable to the TCO as you'll see in a moment I like that it has a matte black stand the Vizio badges off to the right and not front and center as we often see and in terms of the user interface I know this is something I complain about a lot with Vizio TVs but it just got an update and it's far better than it was before way less laggy better overall features I'm still not a fan in general of how many ads you see on this and the navigation is a little bit that's a little bit clunky but way better than it used to be so I'm not going to ding this TV as hard as I have in the past just a heads up on that now we move to the TCL 6 series also outfitted with quantum dots and this model 65 inch is about 700 bucks 720 I think when I just looked it up so a little bit more expensive than what the Vizio is for right now but not by a lot also in addition to the 55 and 65 inch version you can get a 75 inch version which you can't do with the Vizio m-series right now so if you want to go big keep that in mind as for the aesthetics of the TV it has almost no bezel about the same width down here TCL badge in the middle Roku TV on the right and that brings me into the next part the Roku interface which as you know I'm a pretty big fan of because of its simplicity and ease of customization one more thing about the user experience the Roku remote has a voice search feature built right in there's a microphone here so you can search within Roku for stuff that you're wanting to watch and execute some basic commands the vizio does not have it built into the remote you're gonna have to use a smart speaker instead other than that there's a lot more similarities than there are differences between this TVs they have the same amount of hdmi ports i will say that the vizio supports h LG HD are in addition to dolby vision in HDR 10 whereas the TCL does not that's not gonna be a huge deal to most people but if you were trying to watch like the Super Bowl for instance in HDR as it was just broadcast a few weeks ago you would need h LG in order to do it so extra points to vizio on that front now let's get to everybody's favorite part picture quality so I guess the first thing I want to tell you is that the TCL is a better bright room TV whereas the vizio is more suitable for dark rooms why is that the case well the TCL does perform a little bit brighter its peak brightness is higher than the videos is that difference is more pronounced in HDR than it is an SDR so if you don't watch a lot of HDR content then that might not be so meaningful to you but what might be meaningful is that surprisingly the vizio is a better dark room performer and that is because it's got a slightly better local dimming processing feature in it so it gets better shadow detail overall I think in the TCL review video we talked about how we see quite a bit of crushed blacks and that was really my biggest concern with the TCL TV otherwise if you're watching in a bright room if you watch during daytime quite a bit the TCL is going to give you more of that HDR expiry than you would get from the vizio really just depends on how you watch TV if this is a dedicated home theater style TV you might want to look at the vizio another strong point for the vizio is that it actually has a wider color gamut than the TCL by the measurements now this is not something that you're gonna notice when you watch SDR stuff but once you get into HDR you're gonna see better overall color performance than the TCL now that does not speak to color accuracy concerns where these two are calibrated or uncalibrated they perform almost exactly the same in the color accuracy it's really about the expanded color gamut that's slightly better on the vizio as for motion resolution these TVs are virtually the same the TCL does have a motion interpolation feature that smooths stuff out a little bit but it also introduces soap opera effects so I'm not a huge fan of it at any rate neither of these are super stars for fast motion resolution you really have to spend considerably more money in order to get much better performance than you would at this price level let's talk about something that I think is really important to a lot of people and that is screen uniformity both black screen uniformity and bright screen uniformity and both are better on the vizio now I have seen some examples of TCL TVs that were excellent however it seems to be a little hit or miss there is some dirty screen effect that you're gonna get with the TCL from time to time I suppose that's also possible with Vizio I'm just not seeing that as much black screen uniformity however on the vizio is superior to the TCL and again that's owing to the better overall local dimming feature as implemented in the vizio it's not really about how many zones you have it's how you use them and in this case the vizio is straight-up outperforming the TCL now what about input lag well there's virtually no difference between the two TVs when they're in game mode you're talking about one millisecond of response difference between the two I mean somewhere in the 18 19 20 realm depending on your resolution and your refresh rate so either TV is going to perform the same for gamers oh and as for refresh rate neither of them support variable refresh rate so your getting that feature from either TV so which TV should you get well as always that depends on your needs and if your needs require the brightest TV the TCL is the better choice I think for everybody else who wants the best performance they can get out of the TV between these two it's gonna be the Vizio and that's because it's got better screen uniformity better black level performance may not be as bright but it does have a wider color gamut and overall it's just I don't know it's a better cinematic TV so if you're an enthusiast may actually want to lean toward the vizio in this case and hey if you don't like the Smart cast platform you can always plug a Roku or amazon firetv stick in there and you'll be just fine everybody thanks as always for watching what do you think of the results where you surprised the Vizio one leave a comment down below so we
