hey everyone welcome to our slash tales from tech support where we get to have a little chuckle at the technically disadvantaged I'm opal reddit and have I got some stories for you what is up guys before we get started I just wanted to give an apology and a big thank you thank you so much for your patience and for subscribing and watching and giving us some great view time and feedback in the comments and I do apologize for being wayward the last few days my domesticated duties painting rearranging furniture cleaning the house things like that as sorry about the traffic noise have hampered my recording sessions to say the least but I think I think with a little luck and maybe some chloroform I'll be able to get just enough peace to start recording regularly again so let's go ahead and get into the stories guys I've been hacked customer was yelling that his device was compromised someone hijacked it and we needed to fix it now after screen sharing with the customer I'm seeing that his device storage was maxed out his battery life was lower than 80% and he had tons of web pages open as I'm having the man to lead apps and what-have-you the customer will start yelling you see you see someone's hacked me it's running slow because that a-holes hacked my stuff I remained calm and just worked with him the best that I could helping him remove as much as we could about an hour later we finally had deleted over a hundred gig of content I asked the customer to check a web page to send an email and open an app the customer performs the activities and rather than admitting that it was worth his storage space he literally said I must have scared that hacker off man thank you I tried not to laugh and honestly I was tired of correcting the guy I asked if he needed anything else well someone's delusional you guys ever run into anybody that's that set on believing like the tinfoil hat stuff like they have totally neglected their computer no maintenance no ccleaner no nothing save every email open 8 million web browsers but yet claim and stick to their guns that it's actually the hacker that's doing this to him let me know in the comments scanner Eric I work for a medium-sized ASC ambulatory surgical center thank you for clarifying that Opie we start procedures early so our check-in desk opens at 5:45 a.m. i T does not open at 5:45 a.m. we have some of our best people opening up so I rarely get called this morning however vehicles me CI equals check-in me running at about 5 percent efficiency yes ci sorry my scanner isn't working in there's a message on my screen ci computers actually had two scanners one full size and one for driver's licenses and insurance cards she hadn't told me which one but it didn't really matter because I didn't have enough brain cells online at this point to deal with it anyway me trying to put together a coherent thought without opening my eyes what does the error message say ci oh hang on they didn't have phones at their desks she was talking to me from a wall phone mounted behind them the court would stress to their desk though for just this situation ci let's see it says error scanner not turned on crap sorry click me back to blissful unconsciousness I guess maybe sometimes you just need to be talked through this situation to figure out what the problem really is on dog days of I T years ago I ran my own PC repair shop in a small town small enough that word-of-mouth works better than advertising in Yellow Pages a business near my shop had lost Internet and called me to check it out I show up and look at their PC yep no internet did anyone move it or disconnect the cables I'm not seeing link lights nope so I traced the cable back to the patch panel which then runs to their trailer house the shop was their garage which runs to the router under their TV no power which runs to the wall wart unplugged with a happy lookin little dog of nearby here's your problem sir plugged in the plug walked back to the shop garage and wha-la Internet didn't have the heart to charge him for plugging in a plug the dog obviously knocked out oh that was nice of you I think I still would have charged him what would you guys have done laptop is not turning on help got a ticket then a call right after that from a distressed user stating that their laptop will not boot up user is user me as me either so I'm trying to boot up my laptop and it won't boot up okay unplug it and hold the power button for 30 seconds and try to turn it back on user okay well now boots farther than before but it's giving me an error or something about a critical battery power issue me was it plugged in before user yes it's been on charge all morning me everything is plugged into the laptop all the way including on the power cord going from the wall to the AC adapter to the laptop user yes it's going from the power strip to the AC adapter and going to the laptop everything is plugged in all the way me is the power strip on user yes well hold on no no it is me internally sure it was okay humor me plug the power cable into the wall directly user okay hey its booting up now me okay sounds like your power strip might be going bad internally or you didn't have the power strip turned on in the first place user I'm in now thanks click users are funny that way aren't they though there seems to be a common thread here did you check to see if it was on did you check to see if it was plugged in this one's a long one folks bureaucratic ineptitude works just as well from home is from the office essential worker network cabling technician for an MSP attached to an internal investment bank in the epicenter of the plague good news I only have to come into the office for dire emergencies bad news what constitutes a dire work apparently while trying to connect a router they had blown up the router and had to replace it she told me a tale of Sparks smoke and a little fire was involved so they had gotten another router plugged it in and couldn't get the internet on her PC she said they were there for about four hours trying to get it to work they gave up and just left great ISP and not a surprise was had as they had a crappy rep to begin with so I stopped by after my shift at another job to have a look after a couple of seconds I informed her that I discovered the issue I ran over to my workshop grabbed an rj45 cable Ethernet cable for non-text and used it to replace the rj11 that was going from the router to her PC rj11 being a phone cable yes it fits but it also doesn't fit it's too small internet worked charge $15 for the cable and labor and got another tale of woe about this particular ISP to tell my customers about I remember in the mid to late 90s that was an issue in a couple offices I worked in everybody thought phone cables and data cables were all interchangeable I thought enough years had passed that that wasn't an issue anymore evidently I was sadly mistaken have you logged in yet I developed an online app for a company to consolidate data across systems because having to log into multiple systems and then mentally visualize the data connections is a pain in the butt users ITIL certified service managers of my online ad had to log in and just click on the approved or the rejected button for the standard operating procedure which would then be reported to higher management now this is an internal only tool and I designed it so that it's easy to use users who don't need to approve to reject anything could just view the data without logging in also I was the only developer and only one to support for this tool cast service manager my supervisor and me supervisor hey I just got this call from this really important Senior Service Manager about your tool can I transfer the call me sure supervisor now she's really important and very good friend of mine me for shadowing stupid questions if my supervisor in this service manager are very good friends yeah okay 15 seconds later service manager hi I'm trying to use your tool and I can't seem to accept or reject anything me huh have you logged in because you have to log in if you need to accept or reject anything service manager of course I've logged in your system is broken and you need to fix it me well I don't see any issues when I access the system can you explain what you're seeing service manager I logged in nothing works get it working me alright it's gonna be like that okay I checked that nothing is blocked in your account can you tell me what you see on the screen service manager I see your broken system me describe what you see ignore that you think it's broken service manager I see the homepage when I click on things it works but I can't approve or reject anything why can't you fix this me hold on let me diagnose it a bit more do you see the horizontal menu bar service manager yes me do you see the drop-down menus that say bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla service manager yes yes and yes me okay it's a very rightmost option what do you see service manager what do you mean me well you should see your name right at the end of that line service manager well it's not there me so what does it say service manager it says please law click hmm she hung up because the system was telling her to log in hey thanks for joining me today guys and like I said hopefully I can be a little more regular with my recordings now that we're starting to get it some kind of handle on the painting and things around the house I know it's no excuse but I gotta keep the wife happy
