welcome to this little video about building a vivacious table it's made from a single slab of really beautiful ash that I had salvaged a few years back I tried to film all of the important steps that are involved in completing a table like this and as with any big live edge single slab kind of thing it usually starts at the flattening table and so that's what you're seeing here [Music] [Music] I want to briefly talk on this particular step of adding steel C channels they are meant to prevent cupping and not movement in general step one is to always make sure without any doubt that the wood is dry I shoot for six to eight percent but no higher than ten percent this lab was perfect as you saw just moments ago only seasonal moisture changes will have an influence on this particular slab which is unlikely to cause any major movement so just think of these as insurance we hope to never have to use it but it feels good to know that it's there there are situations that will be out of my control once my work is done maybe the client decides to position their table close to a window for instance where a sunlight is able to heat the top while the underside state schools prolonged exposure and this may cause a slight gradient in the moisture content through its thickness creating tension in the wood and cupping may occur if we don't do anything to prevent it the thing about evany is that it's just so incredibly dark that any pencil lines are really hard to see I just got a bunch of these templates that I make from a piece of flat bar I took of a thick white pencil and just drew this shape and then I went back with a sharper black pencil and made a little cut line there so first I'm gonna cut this almost half way through and then I can cut this shape and then go back and just finish cutting all the way through and then we have two pieces that are identical we put it back in the exact same orientation this is the material for the legs the idea of the design is to turn it into this X shape they're all cut to length at a 30-degree angle and then I just added this smaller angle to give it a little bit of a more narrow feel I also semi polished the edges and gave it a slight chamfer so that we get some like reflecting off of these now I absolutely love this oxide finish once everything has been weathered I can decrease everything and give it a wax finish just to keep it from rusting and it'll look good for many many years [Music] [Music] you you you [Music] this table was commissioned by a local newspaper I hope the people working there have many wonderful and inspiring moments together around this little table to take a step back and just slow down a little bit is when a lot of great ideas come to mind and to get those creative juices flowing especially important in times of stress and fierce competition that is the modern day thank you for watching
