syracuse has over 142 000 people and is known as the salt city located in western new york right about here on a map syracuse is a great city to live in assuming you can stay in the cold weather and the snowfall they get more than any other metro area in the u.s with 104 inches annually you can't beat the location as syracuse is within 350 miles of every major city in new england while there are a lot of options for entertainment arts and activities if you have to go somewhere else it won't be a long trip there's so much to do here you probably won't have to leave anyway so let's go ahead and take a look at the top 10 things that makes syracuse a great place number 10 the carrier dome located on the syracuse university campus the carrier dome is the city's answer for large events it provides the residents with the venue for everything from football basketball lacrosse ice skating shows to world class concerts it also provides people in neighboring towns a great place to visit and not have to drive to larger cities much further away to get great entertainment the dome holds about 50 000 people and is the only domed stadium of its kind in the region since it opened in 1980 it has been redesigned and upgraded to keep up with the times to ensure a great user experience you can count on touring acts to stop in here when they're in the area and there always seems to be something going on number nine rosamond gifford zoo inside burnett park you'll find one of the city's best destinations for families the rosamund gifford zoo it's a 43 acre park with both indoor and outdoor exhibits which is nice on those days where it's too hot or too cold to spend all your time outside inside you can see more animals than you'd expect including monkeys and lions outside there are trail loops that bring you past penguins in a large pool area other trails will bring you past wolves buffalos camels tigers elephants and bears they really have a large selection of animals on display here for the kids there's a petting zoo where you can feed goats and sheep and walk around with them the zoo is a breeding facility for tigers and elephants and it's a really nice attraction right in syracuse that will provide an afternoon's worth of family fun number eight beaver lake nature center one of the most appealing things about syracuse is that while it may be a larger city with large city amenities it is surrounded by many rural hot spots one of them is beaver lake which is a 661 acre natural area just outside of the city if you enjoy being immersed in nature and seeing wildlife this is where you want to visit there are more than nine miles of trails where you'll see over 200 bird species 800 plant varieties and all kinds of native animals it also contains a 200 acre glacial lake that you can access by a canoe or kayak the trails there are perfect for those who are looking to walk or jog because the scenery changes a lot the center is open year round and is a popular place for those looking to get out of the city for a while number 7 clinton square in downtown syracuse is clinton square it's a public park named after dewitt clinton a noted developer of the erie canal which until 1925 ran right through the center of the city and the town square clinton square is the centerpiece of the city surrounded by 19th century buildings that provide a movie-like backdrop fountains are a focal point of the park and during the winter it transforms into a skating rink also located in the square are memorials for soldiers and sailors after thanksgiving every year a massive norway spruce is decorated and lit as the city's christmas tree clinton square is a nice place to visit to see the entire city around you number six museum of science and technology housed in one of the most historical buildings in the city the museum of science and technology offers a variety of exhibits and things to do there are permanent exhibits that will appeal to people of all ages from children to adults some of those include the science playhouse earth science discovery cave to the lockheed martin flight and space exhibit also located at the museum is toothpick world which has two guinness world records the first being for the tallest toothpick structure and the other for the largest toothpick displays this is another great family-friendly destination that especially children will enjoy number five destiny usa when it comes to shopping whether you live here or you're just visiting destiny usa is where people go in syracuse this isn't just a mall it's a tourist destination with over 29 million visitors each year there are over 270 stores of all kinds taking up 2.4 million square feet of retail space it is the fifth largest mall in the united states and is divided into three distinct sections the first is your traditional mall with normal mall type stores the next has your famous brands and the last is the entertainment area there you'll find restaurants comedy clubs and activities like go-kart racing and rope walks no matter what you're looking for you're sure to find it here plus you can have a lot of fun while you're shopping number four onondaga lake park this is another great smaller park just outside of the syracuse city limits and it's nice if you aren't wanting to go to a big outdoor area the park extends about seven and a half miles along the shores of its lake and is the place where people go to take a bike ride walk their dogs or take a walk and enjoy the views of the water the lake offers opportunities to fishing as it has a pier and you can try to catch pike bass or catfish for activities you can rent a bike from the visitors center or rent a picnic shelter for a cookout on the lake which is a great idea during the spring and summertime months number three everson museum of art syracuse has a great art scene and the best way to see it is by visiting the everson museum of art the building is very contemporary and if you go downtown you can't miss it it was the first museum to devote itself solely to american art and artists its collection contains over 11 000 unique pieces on display from mediums of all kinds sculptures paintings ceramics photographs and even video they host a variety of seasonal and temporary exhibits keeping the content fresh so you can visit multiple times throughout the year the museum works on an honor system that lets you pay as much or as little as you wish for admission and has free admission every third thursday of the month number two landmark theater luxurious and ornate only begin to describe the landmark theater what may look to be an ordinary theater from the outside is anything but on the inside the details of this facility are incredible the interior is filled with marble and has a chandelier designed by tiffany built in 1926 it cost 1.4 million at the time and admission was 25 cents to see silent films surviving multiple near misses as it fell into hard times throughout the years and dodging demolition it's now on the national registrar of historic places and fully restored to its original grandeur whether you're just into old beautiful buildings or have the chance to see a show or event here make sure you check out the landmark theater number one green lakes state park green lakes is a really unique and beautiful park really close to syracuse it features two glacial lakes known for its blue green color and being crystal clear round lake is a designated national natural landmark and is definitely one of the highlights of the park there are beaches on the shores that are perfect for hot summer days as you can enjoy not only the beach but the water boat and canoe rentals are available as well around the lake are rolling hills and forests a 10 mile hiking trail is laid out along the shore and through the wildlife area so you can really mix up your activities if you wanted to there are plenty of picnic areas and even an 18 hole golf course if you wanted to take full advantage of the park and the outdoors there's a campground with seven cabins and 142 campsites you can reserve with the mix of the beach lake and
