i hope you guys are all having a phenomenal day easy autofix here and today we're going to learn symptoms of a bad thermostat the whole purpose of the thermostat is to help the engine run an operating temperature when the engine gets super hot the thermostat opens up the light coolant flow through the radiator to cool it down and recirculate back to the engine this prevents the engine from overheating on the flip side when the engine is cold the thermostat is closed to help the engine warm up faster the thermostat is found by following the lower radiator hose that goes straight to the engine normal operating temperature should be from 195 to 220 degrees fahrenheit so when it comes to symptoms of a bad thermostat it can go into two different directions there could be symptoms of a stuck open thermostat and there can be symptoms of a stuck closed thermostat the first symptom you might be experiencing with a stuck open thermostat is an engine light a code known for this cause is p0128 in short words this code means the coolant is taking longer than usual to reach operating temperature the scanner i use to help me retrieve these codes is linked in the description now the thermostat can still be bad with the engine light off so let's move on to the next symptom the second symptom of a stuck open thermostat could be the temperature gauge taking longer than usual to reach the halfway mark a stuck open thermostat allows coolant to travel from the engine through the radiator which cools down the coolant which goes back into the engine now since this coolant process repeats over and over again it delays the time for the engine to reach operating temperature the third symptom of a stuck open thermostat would be a poor heating performance in the interior of the car since the coolant is always getting cooled by the radiator this will affect heat in your car since hot coolant is a contributor to your heating system the fourth symptom is your temp gauge on the hot position this means your engine is overheating a stuck closed thermostat can be the cause for this since the thermostat never opens it will never be able to go through the radiator which cools down the coolant which goes back to the engine the fifth symptom of a closed thermostat is leaking coolant the cooling could be leaking from a thermostat housing or it could leak from one of the hoses the reason why this happens is because when heat increases pressure increases and this causes objects to expand until they pop and in this case results in a leak when the engine is warmed up a quick tip to check to see if your thermostat is stuck closed is by feeling both hoses if one hose is hot and the other one never gets warm the thermostat could be the culprit i hope you guys learned something new today if you like videos like this make sure to like and subscribe and i'll see you in the next video
