[Music] [Music] [Music] waste management is a problem the waste arises from many sources like food leftovers plastics from supermarkets empty tubes of toothpaste plastic bottles food cans use bottles and electronic quests [Music] the local authorities have to contend with these thousands of tonnage of waste every day the increase of economic activity has come with also increased generation of waste so i think more economic activity at the also industrial activity leading to a high generation of municipal solid waste in the greater city of osaka we are currently submitted at three million zombies living in the state of russia of course class of miners immigrants people from other towns and also international visitors so that translates to around 1 500 metric tons of municipal solid waste generation generated a day and right now we are to 55 percent collection efficiency in terms of what is arriving at the disneyland final disposal site which is a jungle landfill that combines into 825 tons per day and the personality that is left out is what you see lying around being bent buried or disposed of in drainages backyards on all these city highways or streets the waste management in zambia is a sector that is of increasing concern because of the demographic growth and local authorities that are struggling to keep up with the waste that is generated how to manage this waste there is a question of capacity how to collect how to transport how to treat and also the whole question of a recycling plastic for example the know-how is lacking for now west is one of the most visible problems it's twofold you have the consumer and then you have the management side where you are now flooded with a city say a city of lusaka that is accumulating in waste you have the baolani site that you know has recently been decommissioned because of the same households are then just you know throwing things away and the city then through the saka city council is maybe being overwhelmed by the number of wastes in the communities and in the city as a whole we have the people that already have this mindset that i can throw anywhere there will be somebody to pick it up or design the type of drainage oh they don't care they said i don't care attitude that really bothers me and i think that is one thing that i feel can be worked on starting from a younger age the attitude is very poor because we just find litter everywhere we throw away litter anywhere no there's a good collecting point but they opt to just throw it away so which is making our country daily it is an eyesore it is an irritant it is a blockade to our drainages it destroys the looks of our environment i think we are all tired of really seeing our cities and towns in the midst that they are in there's waste everywhere and it's more filthy during the rains but solutions to this worst is about us for these youths west is merely raw material in the wrong place we try to recycle it and do some visual arts and also some sculptures as well as we are trying to get into construction and make some bricks that are made out of glass and plastics things like a christmas tree out of uh lita and that in itself just one uh christmas tree can capture about a thousand uh bet borders from the from the environment and not only that the sculptures that we do like the one that we have here in the studio a horse it has about 700 bet borders that it has engulfed from the from the environment we are looking to create a sustainable system in addition to the processing of the larvae for feed and fertilizer we are looking to then work with waste such as recycled paper in order to manufacture egg trays i'm always keen to incorporate climate action techniques in my farming operations and one of my projects where i've incorporated this climate action techniques is kulesho organics organics is an insect-based recycling project it's also an organic farming project where we incorporate the black soldier fly larvae to break down organic substrates and other food products into rich organic fertilizer and we also make very protein dense animal feed that you could feed to your chickens to your pigs and also to your fish as well the idea is to make champions from these little ones what we're trying to encourage them to to use to be creative one and to change their mindset of throwing litter anyhow our objectives are to educate children to facilitate on the principle of reduced reuse and recycle my idea is to first attack the minds of the children if children and adults know that west has a value on it definitely no one will be littering around no one will be playing with west anyhow our company is called theatre waste management and its core purpose is transportation of waste mostly cyclical material but also we are in search of innovative measures which we are supposed to use for the safe disposal of waste it is being looked at with innovation and the business eye both aimed at creating wealth the whole application will help the community in terms of information knowing how what is waste you know waste is money waste is not something you can just throw around so our help is trying to encourage people the community a proper and the good way of disposing waste but also helping to create employment and also providing some bit of money to just in anyone who's always having an interest in terms of waste the united nations development program zambia is engaged with the use of lusaka and dola around waste management initiatives so the project we're talking about is a project that intends to promote and enhance sustainable waste management in urban and peri-urban areas in large cities focusing on youth and women led enterprises and this is we believe an opportunity to create sustainable and decent green jobs that can support some of the most vulnerable people in the zambian society we run a campaign where we taught people to say for every five colored quarters because if you see most of the photos that we use here are colors so for every five colored bottles you're giving your coin we are adding value to the litter you know people are seeing value in it and they're stopping to look at it the same way and they are big part of the recycling chain in terms of waste management the whole value chain collection transportation intermediate treatment we are around 10 000 jobs in the state of osaka i'm looking at a number of use of almost like a i would say a range between 200 and 500 years will be employed in a space over one year because if we are collecting waste because there is already an existing market the material is there is everywhere the body tops the area but there's no proper way of actually taking what is on the ground to the campaign which can utilize those materials undp is committed to continue supporting youth-led and women-led uh enterprises in the sector of waste management the first step will be to really continue the support to those that were awarded and the needs are really enormous there is a need to strengthen the capacity on how to manage a business issues like financial management digital e-marketing the whole concept also of business incubation how you mature your idea and you verify your assumptions so that it becomes a viable commercial enterprise waste it is an iso it is an irritant it's a blockade to our drainages it destroys the looks of our environment but it can be an enormous source of wealth and maintain a healthy clean and sustainable environment [Music] [Music] you
