(soft music) - My name is Garth Davis. I practice surgical and medical weight loss at Houston Methodist. I've been in practice over 20 years. I've done thousands of weight loss surgeries and I also do weight management for people that have failed weight loss surgery or who aren't getting weight loss surgery. (soft music) I'm a Texas boy. I went to Baylor College of Medicine, here in Houston but then I decided to get out for a while, So I went to University of Michigan for my residency. Then I came back to Houston, Texas where I started to practice with my father, called the Davis clinic. My hospital affiliation is with Houston Methodist Hospital. I work at Houston Methodist West, and Houston Methodist Downtown. I grew up with a father who was a surgeon and I really respected my father. And you know, some people go and play catch with their dad when they're younger, I would go to the hospital and operate with my dad. So I've been operating since I was a teenager. He was a big influence on me. I had a lot of respect for him. And in fact, I ended up not just being his son, but also being his partner. Why did I get into bariatric surgery? The more I talked with the patients and the more I saw the unbelievable success, the more it really went way beyond just the surgery and more into, "Wow, this is an amazing opportunity "to change someone's life." (soft music) Bariatric surgery is just about weight loss. We call it metabolic surgery. So, the reason we call it metabolic surgery is it does change your metabolism. And so, we see amazing cures in diabetes, in hypertension, sleep apnea gets better, reflux and heartburn can get a lot better. These surgeries are done laparoscopically, so we call it minimally invasive surgery. And so people actually do probably better than they think they would do. We send people home the next day after surgery. I want them up and active right away, I've had people go back to work within a week. Talking to a patient partner is important because your surgeon can't tell you everything you need to know about this process. Your surgeon hasn't had the experience of trying to eat an apple after a gastric bypass, your surgeon hasn't had an experience of having clothes that are now too big. A lot of psychological things that happen when your whole body starts to change. And there is a mental process, and your surgeon hasn't experienced that. But you know what, your patient partner has, and they can both support you through that process but also give you tips on how to get through that. So the important thing is to not run away, we're here for you. (soft music)
