hey guys welcome back so today I want to talk to you about the surefire mag 560 quad stack magazine for the ar-15 m16 and that's why I'm holding here in my hands now this is aluminum bodied magazine and as I mentioned it holds 60 rounds of 223 or 556 ammunition now the quad stack magazine isn't a new concept actually the Russians had built a sake a 74 magazine that's made out of polymer that's also a quad stack 60 round magazine of five point four five by 39 ammunition surefire saw an opportunity in the market for a magazine a high-capacity magazines such as this they actually have a demonstration on their website of a US Marine firing a little over 200 rounds out of standard 30 round magazines which I have here and then firing the same number of rounds out of the surefire sixty magazines now obviously he can fire more rounds more quickly using the sixty round magazines because the magazine changes were less frequent and that's what the appeal is to this particular magazine now surefire also manufactures the mag 5 100 which is slightly longer than this magazine and holds 100 rounds of ammunition now the magazine has something of a complex system of Springs inside of the body here and I'll show you what that looks like here in a little bit when we disassemble the magazine because the magazine is user serviceable now the magazine is only slightly bigger than a standard ar-15 magazine which I have here you can see the standard ar-15 magazines the surefire so it is just a little bit bigger definitely wider but if you have a double magazine pouch chest rig it will actually fit into the double magazine pouch so you can actually carry two of these in this particular magazine pouch which is actually set up for for ar-15 m16 style magazines you could carry two of these surefire 60 round magazines in it if you chose to now the single pouches you won't have any luck because it will be too thick and it simply won't fit so let's take a look inside this magazine and see what makes it tick and I'll show you how to disassemble it now disassembling the mag 560 is fairly straight forward all you have to do is take a it push down and push the four plate off and then you have to be careful because this is a lot of spring pressure underneath here so I go ahead and remove the floor plate and holding that spring with my thumb now you have this little divider in here which I'm going to go ahead and take out that's being held by these little lips here which are holding the spring in place now you have a series of Springs in here which we're just going to walk out take it out past that lip all right and when you get it to that point you'll see there's a little metal disc inside there I'm going to move this disk up carefully to those lips and just slide it out the back here like that and once you do that you'll see another spring that cup was setting over pull that spring out and now you'll see your follower inside there you can grab your follower this is your secondary follower that has another spring attached to it with the primary follower just above it and that is how you disassemble the mag 560 okay now that we've had a peek inside the magazine let's take the magazine out to the range and see just how well this magazine works all right guys so we're out of the range with the surefire mag 560 I have 60 rounds of Wolfe ammunition loaded up into the magazine we're going to fire the 60 rounds out of my colt m16a2 now there's the first malfunction I've noticed that the malfunctions are somewhat common with wolf ammunition and the surefire mag 560 go ahead and clear this malfunction and a little bit more shooting all right so we made it through 60 rounds with only one malfunction loading the magazine is a little bit more difficult than your standard 30 round magazine the first 20 rounds go fairly easily but as it starts to gate the ammo inside the magazine you'll feel a little bit more resistance and by gating I mean that it's actually channeling the rounds down into the various columns inside the magazine all right so now we're going to give the federal X M 193 F a shot of the surefire mag 560 and the m16a2 that mo is considerably hotter than the wolf ammunition all right so we're going to check the function of the XM 193 F on the Surefire mag 560 the Bushmaster ACR looks like it over rode around in the magazine let's go ahead and see what's causing that it's the last four rounds of the magazine there we go all right some final thoughts on the surefire mag 560 magazine it hasn't been 100% reliable in my experience now this isn't my first trip to the range with the magazine I've had it out several times I fired probably 500 rounds to the magazine and while I did have much better results with the 5 5 6 brass cased ammunition I still had malfunctions using that ammunition in the m16 and the ar-15 the scar the ACR so it's not 100% reliable the claims by surefire that this is more reliable than a standard contract magazine 30 round magazine really haven't proven to be true in my experience now granted I have a sample set of just one this magazine but given the comments I've read by other owners on the internet it doesn't seem that this problem is unique to me the magazine simply aren't that reliable so anyway take that for what it's worth again a sample set of 1 however given the cost of this magazine right around $100 retail I probably won't be buying any more to find out if it's just this magazine that has the occasional problem it just doesn't make sense to me especially given I don't necessarily feel I need a quad stacked magazine I don't really feel like 30 round magazines are deficient in any way I actually kind of liked them but it is a neat novelty item I probably will keep this magazine around tested some more maybe dunk it in the mud and see how it performs but we already have performance problems with it now with the steel cased ammunition you definitely don't have a reliable magazine the two don't the two mix like oil and water the steel cased ammo even when you're loading the magazine where my comments earlier in the video were about it being somewhat hard to load that was really just with the steel cased ammunition the brass cased ammo loads much more easily so there's more resistance being offered when you're using a steel cased ammo that and the steel cased ammo like wolf isn't as powerful as true 5 5 6 ammo it's loaded to 223 specs and on the lower end of the spectrum of power so you're not really getting enough gas I don't believe to the bolt carrier that coupled with the additional spring pressure the springs in this magazine applying too much pressure to that bolt carrier it's slowing that bolt carrier down just a little bit too much and that's what's causing the additional malfunctions with the steel cased ammo and that's just an opinion based on my observations so somewhat reliable with steel K are not reliable steel cased ammo somewhat reliable with brass case ammunition but still not 100% reliable if you guys have any questions about this magazine feel free to swing by our Facebook page you can find us there at WWF
