I'm very impressed with his skill with using the live loops, his skillful rapping and incorporating Native American percussion and visual elements.
To be honest though, that generic modern American pop piano line kinda ruins it for me. I don't like it. I'd rather listen to him fully embrace traditional Native American melodies to give attention to them. They're certainly listenable, I don't doubt he could do it. As far as this video/song goes, it just seems like he's just capitalizing on the Native American aesthetic.
I dig the message in his lyrics. I dig really the chanting. Just I get the impression he has a gimmick, and it's being used to try to standout, but that bland piano loop makes him blend in with every rapper in the past 5-10 years who also have a good message. It's cynical and fucked up but after so much of this, I stop feeling moved by this.
f he just dropped that piano loop and used some more chanting or more complex rhythms (which I think he's capable of doing, without a doubt) than he'd be making something truly unique. I'll still take a minute later to check out what else here has made, I'm just not excited about it as I would be otherwise.
His heart is in the right place but this is class A cheesy.
That's dope. If you like this you'll really love A Tribe Called Red.
