so good to be in the presence of the lord this sunday morning i'd like to take an opportunity to welcome everyone to connect service here at the refuge of hope it's so great to be in the house of the lord with all of you for those of you who don't know who i am my name is tim and i get to serve on team here at the refuge of hope and i'd like to thank all of you for being here i'd like to thank all of our guests for being here we have several guests in the house let's give our guests a handclap of welcome [Music] [Applause] so great to see all of you and to be together in the presence of the lord turn to your neighbor shake their hand tell them how glad you are to see them i've high five them air high five them fist bump them whatever you want to do just greet someone in the name of the lord so great to be together you may be seated in the house of god we have a great day planned uh today um but before we do that i do have a few announcements that i'd like to share with everyone of course this upcoming tuesday night you don't want to forget prayer here at the refuge of hope at seven o'clock we have a time of prayer you do not want to miss out on that also remember our grow service this wednesday at seven o'clock i know we have a great uh time of teaching and worship and i know it's beneficial it would be beneficial and a blessing to you so growth service seven o'clock uh this upcoming wednesday also want to let everyone know about some events that are happening next weekend of course we have the north american missions conference which is going to be happening september 10th and 11th that is going to be on a friday night and a saturday morning brother art wilson is going to be speaking here at the refuge well the refuge of hope's host is the refuge of hope is hosting uh the event and our art wilson can cook they're going to be participating in that uh in that those services in that conference but i invite everyone come out again you know our our church is hosting it so it's going to be right here you do not want to miss out on on the north american missions conference we're going to be celebrating church planning we're going to be equipping people sending people into the harvest getting people excited about about minnesota and excited about reaching people with the gospel of jesus christ that's what that missions conference is all about so come out help us to to to celebrate and help us engage into the presence of the lord nam conference next weekend september 10th and 11th you do not want to miss out on that also want to let you know about another special event bishop and sister thompson will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary that's okay refuge of hope let's give them honor [Applause] of course bishop and sister thompson have served the refugee foe for many years and they're going to be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and they're going to be celebrating that event with a party uh that's going to be happening saturday september the 11th from 2 to 6 p.m it is an open house there's going to be a barbecue there's going to be bouncy house there's going to be volleyball there's going to be all kinds of stuff going on to celebrate this uh this milestone in their life everyone is invited we do ask that you would rsvp sister janelle gleason to just let her know that that you know you're going to be coming you can email her if you don't know that email address you can see me after service i would be happy to share that with you uh please but please rsvp janelle gleason by september the 6th that district and even in my life as well janelle's life as well my wife so thank you bishop thompson this time i'm going to invite janelle lopez to come and come up janelle how many of you love children our children's ministry they have had a great time um they've had a great time this past summer they've learned about the fruit of the spirit they've been in kids church they've had services they've they've been taught about the uh they've been in a series on the fruit of the spirit they concluded that today of course next weekend we're going to start up with our fall semester of sunday school but uh we wanted to just cap out cap off the summer semester the summer time in children's church which is a special presentation janelle take it away hello good morning i'm going to ask the kids to come up to the front any kids that want to can come on up and all the kids that were that practiced with us this morning and go ahead and grab a piece of fruit guys and get in your order for the memory verse they're gonna just do a couple of things to show you what they learned in the summer we did regular classes for part of the summer and then in the month of august we gave our teachers a little break and so we did uh kids church we were all together in one group and now we did the fruit of the spirit so they're just gonna do a little bible verse about the fruit of the spirit they're gonna sing a little song for you guys um and then at the end we'll see if they feel comfortable they're gonna share something they liked about sunday school this summer so i'm going to sit down here so i can kind of help lead the verse and they're all going to be saying different parts of it so pay attention and let's give them a big hand at the end i know you will oh right now get them hyped up okay ready one two three patience oh wait sorry goodness i'm supposed to say that one i think your word goodness faithfulness gentleness and all right galatians all right we're gonna do it one more time for you guys that was our practice round we're gonna do it one more okay ready one two three the fruit of the spirit is goodness gentleness gentleness good and collations all right let's give them a hand thank you guys and uh i have a couple of helpers that are going to help me with this next part so if you were with uh brother lucas and brother john let's stay on this side and if you were in the group with me come on this side and if you didn't practice come on this side with me too so i'll be over here all right so this song that we're gonna do is around how many of you guys know what a round is anybody that's where you sing the first part of the song and then the group jumps in and sings another part of the song so we just learned this this morning so we'll see how it goes they did an awesome job brother john and brother lucas thankfully are way more musical than me and they told me there's something called a half note and a whole note that i didn't realize and apparently you also have to try to stay on beat as well so they are going to hopefully help me with that because i wasn't doing the greatest with that but the kids did awesome so either way it's gonna be fun because they did a great job okay so this group is the one that starts um if you guys want to go ahead and start your part so one two [Music] god three love he loves everyone god is love he loves god is love he loves everyone yay they did so good thank you guys so the next the last thing we're gonna do is the kids are gonna share a little bit so if you were in the pre-k to first grade class go stand over there by brother john if you're in second and third you can stay right here in the middle that was with sister maddie and sister delaney and then if you are in fourth fifth and sixth come on over here [Music] so i just asked them if they want to say something they liked about sunday school in the summer they will if they feel uncomfortable they're going to just pass the bike on so uh let's see what what we have to say oh look max you get to be first i like the teaching i liked about what i liked about sunday school was all the fun activities we did i like their snacks [Music] because we got to learn about jesus [Music] i like the snacks too [Music] i like the snacks i like the snacks too [Applause] um before the kids go sit down i think there was a universal theme what was that theme snacks i mean that's my favorite part too so i know i love playing well i love teaching the kids and playing we have a lot of fun down there i want to ask if you participated in sunday school at all over the summer could you please stand whether you were doing check-in whether you were a teacher an assistant teacher a float teacher we had a really nice group of people in the back too if you want to take a look around and let's just give them all a big hand [Music] thank you you can be seated i just want to say you know sunday school is so much fun i think all of us have found it to be very rewarding but um it also does take a lot of work so during the week there's things that have to be done to be prepared for it and um and all of these teachers and staff they have shown up and they just really seem to have a great time we have a lot of fun we did a big party with our teachers and our staff our well basically when i say our staff i mean our checking and security team because that's the other part of our staff we had a big party to celebrate them and we're planning to keep on doing things to celebrate them because it's a really special group of people that has a vision for impacting our next generation for jesus and how many of you guys know that our next generation they really need the support of our church and the love of god surrounding them yeah so in our church um we as a church we gave them a little gift today which they already got in sunday school but it's a little puppet thing those are apparently popular right now and so you uh and it has a little tag on it that says my church prays for me so let's keep that in mind as our kids are going back to school keep them in prayer i know that you guys already do but um they're carrying that little tag with them to remind them that we are praying for them wherever they're at so thank you guys amen amen praise god amen would you give them a hand once again praise god praise god praise god are learning the word of god as much as we can keep let's keep putting the word of god into their heart amen praise god it is so good to see the new addition to the church baby clementine in the house incredible i don't know how these two brother nathan and chelsea do it they just they're born and in the house of god they don't miss a beat they just right here amen we probably didn't take our kids to church for a week or two before she says a month amen but it's so my heart just is beating fast to see a girl in the house amen i love babies i i am gonna hold her okay after service just letting you know dad grandpa amen amen praise god we love you all and thank you so much for being here each one of you worshiping those folks that are out of town those that are online welcome in jesus name if you have your bibles i'd like to turn your attention to philippians chapter 2 and i want to read from verse 5 through verse 9. so parents next week our fall semester for sunday school is starting once again thank you each one that is helping with our children's ministry you're doing a fantastic job cannot thank you enough and as i thought about this weekend and labor day weekend and you know you have to you have to give me some grace [Music] because i hear about this holidays and then i'm thinking to myself what is this holiday about what is this all about so i'm googling and researching what these holidays are about to just get the crux of the matter because i don't want to make the same mistake confusing the uh memorial day [Music] and veterans day whatever it is i i get you know so i make sure that i i kind of get the crux of what is this holiday about wow somebody fought for your rights somebody fought for you know the enjoying the 40 hours the pto's the pay time-offs and and just the fairness of of the laborers in in america and i'm thankful for that that is amazing you know and and i upon thinking all of that i just kind of thought of this philippians chapter 2 and we want to begin from verse 5 and we'll read through down to verse 9 very interesting passage of scripture and paul talks to this church he says let this mind be in you which was also in christ jesus who being in the form of god for it not robbery to be equal with god but made himself of no reputation and took upon him the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of man and being found in the in fashion as a man he humbled himself and became obedient to death even the death of the cross and verse 9 says wherefore god has god also hath highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name [Music] and that name we know here today is the name jesus very shortly i'd like to title this message it's a lengthy title he humbled himself and became obedient to death he humbled himself and became obedient to death would you put your devices down your bibles down and would you for a moment would you reach out towards heaven and just ask god to speak to us our worship team has done a tremendous job leading us into the presence of god god's presence is in this place to speak to us to minister to us to take us in a different dimension would you just lift your voice for a moment here and magnify god lord we thank you for what we feel in this house for we feel your presence we feel your touch oh god the unction of the holy ghost is in this place to heal to deliver to save to redeem oh god i pray lord that you will be with us as we o god dive into your word as we o god speak your word i pray that you'll touch my mind and my lips of clay oh god help me to think clearly and to speak simply oh god cause our hearts and our minds to be open to hear what thus saith the lord we give you praise we give you glory and we give you honor we give you praise in jesus name we pray and everyone said amen would you clap your hands and magnify god in this house praise god i think we can do better than that and just give him praise in this place in jesus name amen he deserves all praise he deserves all glory and honor amen amen thank you jesus before you're seated why don't you turn to one or two and just greet them in jesus name let them know you're so glad to see them in the house of the lord amen praise god i this week was just browsing through facebook to be sure that i'm just kind of up to date with things and i've got myself a timer 20 minutes a day is what i do so whatever i've actually put restrictions on myself to just 20 minutes a day i will check and just kind of overview what is going on and i'm out of there i i don't want to meddle with a mess of facebook that much but as i was browsing through something really caught my attention and just and it burdened me as i read this from somebody they said and i'm sure you've been following the news and and uh what's going on in afghanistan and kind of all that is kind of revolving around that uh but but i've been kind of following you know what's the church's news and what's going on with the churches and come across this that the underground church somebody put out there that the underground church in kabul afghanistan is now at home with the lord we receive news that the underground church in kabul of afghanistan has been martyred our friends have been in contact with and met together last night in deep prayer and the last words she spoke were we feel your prayers because this supernatural boldness came over us and we were singing in the spirit even the kids said mom we will not deny jesus and as they were on the phone they heard screaming and gunshots god is so powerful they went to be with the creator filled with joy i don't know what it did to you i understand that there are kids in the house as well but that's the reality of the time that we are living in it was it shook the very core of me as we in comfort sit and enjoy this wonderful weekend there are pastors of the underground churches they are being head hunted and slaughtered and the gospel that has been going forth in these nations christians living in this kind of situations and here we read in philippians chapter 2 and verse 5 through verse 9. it's an incredible portion of scripture where it shows that jesus humbled himself and took form of a man i i absolutely love this passage of scripture because it constantly speaks to me it absolutely speaks to me because you can't include the experience we have with the any other religions on this planet it is far more than just a study of religion it is a miracle that we are standing on it is a miracle that we have experienced it isn't just another ism it is the supernatural birth that is christ in you the hope of glory that's what makes us so different that's what makes it so amazing that we here today are sitting miracles in the presence of god you see the christian experience brings us at once into the right relationship there is no relationship like this relationship with your creator it brings everything to place there is there is no break the break disappears and a marvelous sense of peace and joy floods into our being something happens hope begins to begin to come into our life we get purpose we get reason to live we get a sense of accomplishment in our life when we were thinking and searching for all of our life suddenly we come to a place of a being that is satisfied from looking and searching and that jesus makes this possible in our life he unites the father and he brings the this brings the realization of brothers and sisters in christ and we become a family and i suddenly discover that i am a member with all rights of a great family that i am a part of a family called the church you are my brother and my sister we have brothers and sisters not just in this place but all across the world we're serving god together and jesus brings us that unity in the spirit and we can enjoy the privileges that god brings and the promises that god brings in our lives and that's why no matter what happens and what goes on somehow somewhere there's a peace in our life there's a joy that comes in our life and jesus brings that all together and this is why this is all that is reflected in jesus christ and jesus is perfectly what we need he is all the the the worship team saying it right he is all i need he is all we need it doesn't matter what have you have in life if you don't have jesus you don't have anything but if you have jesus you don't need anything he's all we need you see god chose to reveal himself perfectly to mankind through jesus christ why so i know what god is like all of god was in jesus christ to show me what god is like and through jesus i know what god's intent for me is through jesus i know what his purpose is for me and i will tell you what his purpose is for me it is service it is service you see my fulfillment is becoming a servant of christ a servant of christ i don't know it doesn't matter what they do in this world i may be abused and i might be misused but i will know my destiny i have realized my destiny and it is to be a servant of christ to serve the lord jesus christ to the very last breath that's what we're here for although jesus that we know the intent that god has and it begins it begins when we realize we recognize something we've got to recognize something in this hour i must renounce all self-claims why because jesus did he laid aside the immunities which belonged to him as god hear me he left everything and he gave it all away so that i must be saved so that i can experience this privilege that i can experience the promises that we have in god so i must give myself away hear me i must die to live i must lose to gain i can never be the it can never be the concept of the flesh i have to die to gain so that i can live in christ and i must wave away all exemption i cannot spread from temptations and from suffering from death i must offer myself for god if i want to fulfill my destiny my life to obtain it must be one great denial of self death to the flesh you see this is the christian experience this is a church experience not just a religious experience but the church experience and when you see the writer paul he sees us upon this working principles and challenges every man to become he says let this mind be in you the same mind which was also in christ let this mind be in you what paul there is only one way to think for a believer and this is the way it is the passage to make oneself of no reputation he said let this mind be in you that jesus was saying you know what he made himself of no reputation we as believers we've got to find ourselves if we're going to live for god if we're going to serve him we got to make ourselves of no reputation whatever reputation that i have it's in christ he's the one that gives me the reputation while i walk in jesus christ i talk in jesus christ you see it is a it is at a crossroads this idea that i'm just speaking here he says at crossroads with the world system i understand some here are sitting and saying my goodness where are you going what are you talking about you see there's no compatible to the world system in god's system absolutely does not make sense to the world system but when you have jesus christ as i read these folks that looked death in its eyes face to face realizing there is a boldness that nothing else matters as long as we have the lord jesus christ everything is okay with my soul so much is revealed in philippians chapter 2 from verses 5 through 9. and these verses reveal some incredible things but i'd like to focus on this section here though he was a son yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered and he how that he suffered and he died that he was obedient to death he humbled himself and became obedient to death what does it mean he was obedient to the betrayal that he faced from those that were around him psalms chapter 41 and verse nine if we can pull that up mine eyes own friend my yeah my own friend in whom i trusted he says yeah my own family familiar friend in whom i trusted which did eat of my bread has lifted up his heels against me my friend has betrayed me and jesus faced the betrayal of his very own friend he suffered at this the hand of judas he he was sold for pieces of silver he was he was bought for a price of the porter's field he was betrayed by his very own friends but he was obedient to the betrayal he did not complain about the betrayal he was obedient in his trial isaiah 53 and verse 7 you can read this he went before the lamb before the shears he did not open his mouth as they led him he was oppressed and he was afflicted yet he opened not his mouth he is he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter and as a sheep before the shears is dumb so he openeth not his mouth even though he was led to the trial he had his mouth zipped up and he did not open his mouth he was obedient to the trial that he had to go through he was abused without mercy he was stripped they stripped him of his garment they placed a scarlet robe on him they put a crown of thorns on his forehead they spit at his face they slapped him uh or to this to his face to his face they treated him bad but he did not open his mouth they beat him with stripes but he said not a single word he was obedient to the trial though all of this realized through all of this he could have called down legions of angels he could have called legions of angels but he did not but instead he humbled himself unto death god who could have who spoke the world into existence he had the power to do everything yet he was obedient not just for the trial but he was also obedient to death he was obedient to the death if you read deuteronomy chapter 21 and verse 23 you see that the anyone that was crucified the anyone that died on the tree the bible says cursed is everyone that hang on a tree he took upon himself our curse and our sorrow for you and me he took upon himself the curse that belonged to me and you he hung between two thieves if you read this the gospel he hung between two thieves he was numbered amongst the transgressors he took everything that you can throw at him but he was doing it and he was going through for a purpose for a reason the bible says for the joy that is set before him he forsoo in the future that someday there will be folks that will be sitting here that will need the grace they will need the mercy they will need the hand of god they will need the joy and the peace of god in their life and he said i'm gonna take whatever he does whatever i have to uh to make provision for those that is coming ahead of this they did everything to him they humiliated him they embarrassed him being suffering to he brought suffering to his body his heart his mind they could not have done more to hurt him in every way than what they did jesus took all of it through it all he was conscience he was aware of the fact that he could once again call down legions of angels and they would deliver him any moment he had the power to change everything to turn everything but you know what the bible says philippians chapter 2 and verse 5 verse 6 let's let's look at this verse again he says being in the form of man not thought robbery to be equal with god but let's go on the next verse but made himself of no reputation and took upon him a form the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of man verse 8 and he says and being found in the fashion as a man he humbled himself he humbled himself he did not take the power that he had to save himself he could have called legions of angels but he did not and he says he humbled himself and became obedient to death he did it so that i can be saved he did it so that you can be saved he did it so that we could be atoned back to god they could have not done any worse than what they had done to him but he humbled himself and became obedient to death he'll hear me saints of god i i'm almost done here i'm almost done i hope you get the message that he took upon a form of a servant we can scream about the rights and all that we have and it's great i'm thankful for all that we have but hear me this jesus he gave his all for you and for me he had the power to save himself but he did not he was obedient he was obedient to death he humbled himself so that you and i can have all the privileges and the pressures of what the promises of god has for us and if our lord humbled himself and became obedient to death so that you and i can be saved here's my question and i'm done and i'm done here's my question why should it be so difficult for me to surrender my life why should it be difficult for me to surrender my life i must give myself away i must give myself away there is nothing better to live for than this there is nothing greater to live for than this no pursuit in life no pleasure in life no money in life no education in life is better than having your salvation in jesus christ because at the end of the day when you meet face to face with death i want to be able to say with those children that stood and face to face before death said we feel boldness we feel joy you know what they were saying our life is at a place where we know we are right with god absolutely right with god we're content with our walk with god we've lived it we've seen it we've faced the persecution whatever has been thrown to us we are okay with god and there is no complaint there is no regret no matter what comes i have no regret i have no regret since i met jesus christ the songwriter said i have no regret would you stand to your feet and would you ask yourself the question if he gave all if he gave all and he suffered all and he humbled himself he humbled himself to become obedient unto death why why should it be so difficult for me to surrender all i'm going to give my all for the lord jesus christ i don't want anything in return i don't want anything in return i just want to give my life to the work of the kingdom of god in the service of my god i just want to do whatever i can do for the kingdom and the glory of god is there anyone here today that feels the same way that jesus my life belongs to you my life belongs to you everything i do belongs to you my breath belongs to you every ounce of me belongs to you god and i want to live for you i want to serve you and i want to be able to say yes lord i'm here today no matter what life throws at me i know america is not there yet we're not facing the persecution that others are facing in india and china and afghanistan we're not facing all of that yeah that that's just them we are thankful we are privileged to live in a great country we don't have to think about them let them just decide what they're going to do over there i know we're not there yet we're not there yet [Music] but if we can make up our mind today that every ounce of me belongs to jesus [Music] you might not be facing the persecution of death like some are but on a daily basis there's death at our doorsteps when the enemy comes with temptations when the enemy comes with trials when the enemy comes with pleasures of life for you to make the decision of death when you're faced with all of that and if you have made up your mind that i'm gonna humble myself even be obedient to death that i will crucify my flesh daily and live for this jesus and serve this jesus because there is nothing else my brother there is nothing better to live for we can search we can look for the to feel that void in our hearts we can search all our lives we can fill our lives with material gains with knowledge with education with finances with popularity with fame we can try to fill our lives with everything else around us but i can guarantee you i can guarantee you it will never bring the fulfillment that you're looking for because we were not built we were not built to be filled with the things of this world we were built to be filled with the breath of god the bible says he breathed into his nostrils the breath of life you see saints of god i'm trying to pull us in this hour in a place where we don't get tangled with this world the further away that we can step from the world and the cares of the world the materialism of the world and focus our attention on jesus in this day and age i'm telling you the closer you will be to god and the voice of god and at the end of the day now that's what matters that's what matters those children that i talked about and when i look at you guys i think of those children you guys are so blessed you guys are so blessed that you can be in here you have the freedom to worship you have mom and dad that come to the house of god they bring you to the house of god you have the get here because then cause some newer songs they just have funky beginnings and i do not plunk out the melody like i just don't like older songs i can a newer song so it's like will like if we'll have a set and it's a newer song in there and there's a specific like intro to that song that you hear you know i i blank out like we get to the song and i'm like i have no idea how this starts like i just don't know because it's like a weird funky song and uh my friends she is i yeah
