leprous disease on the skin of their body that person shall be brought to air in the priest or to one of his sons the priests anyone who has a leprous disease shall wear torn clothes and let the hair [Music] a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters whether you eat or drink or whatever you do do everything for the glory of god give no offense to jews or to greeks or to the church of god just as i try to please everyone in everything i do not seeking my own advantage but that of many so that they may be saved be imitators of me as i am of christ the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] oh [Music] a great prophet has risen among us [Music] god has looked favorably on his peoples the lord be with you and with your spirit reading from the holy gospel according to mark glory to you o lord a man with leprosy came to jesus begging him and kneeling said to jesus if you choose you can make me clean moved with pity jesus stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him i do choose be made clean and immediately the leprosy left him and he was made clean after sterling sternly warning him jesus sent him away at once saying to him see that you say nothing to anyone but go show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what moses commanded as a testimony to them with a man without him began to proclaim it freely and to spread the word so that jesus could no longer go into a town openly but stayed out in the country and people came to jesus from every quarter the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit we pray that every time we begin to pray and we pray it throughout our life of liturgy the whole of the holy eucharist is offered in a trinitarian way the father the son the holy spirit it is the mystery of god which we could not figure out on our own we cannot understand it on our own it was revealed to us by our lord when he spoke of go baptize the name of the father the son the holy spirit and we we can't get our little heads around it either because it's god the very most profound reality of god one god three persons in a relationship of personal love relationship of love that's something that is the great mystery of the blessed trinity and it is the most practical thing in our faith because we're made in the image and likeness of god and we're called to live in relationships of generous love the degree to which we do that to that degree we are close to god we are living as god wants us to and as we do for all eternity and we to you when we finally come home to the home of the heavenly father and so that reality of a web of love the fact that we are not independent we are always each one of us interdependent we depend on other people we find ourselves the more we forget ourselves individually as our own egos and serve others and love others and they love us and back and forth we go in these networks of love relationship we're social we're not isolated egos we are made to be in relationship with other people we see that in the first chapters of the book of genesis in the story of creation we are made to be with others and we find ourselves in that as john dunn said the great poet no man is an island entire unto himself and that is true and so we need to think about that because in our world a world which has never been more easy to find communication we communicate all the time but all the lonely people where do they all come from we're so caught up in our own individual relationships with a computer screen and with our little tablets and phones and things we forget about others we become solitary lonely in an age when no one has ever been able to communicate more quickly and we have all kinds of friends we have a lot of lonely people and that's something which is a deep tragedy in our society we are not meant to be autonomous islands of ego i did it my way now as i always say that the only song in hell is i did it my way no no we're meant to live in relationship with others and that's why it is said to the ancient writers philosophers and people of all wise people but friendship is so very important we we find ourselves when we relate to others and of course the greatest friendship very profound in life is the friendship that is that of a man and a woman faithful in love and open to the gift of life the very reality of marriage and today is marriage sunday also of course the feast of saint valentine which again speaks in ways which have been a little bit hijacked by secular society of that fact that we are made for others not just for ourselves when we lose our ego and move to others to serve and to love we find who we really are we're made for those relationships of love and we need to think about that especially in this society where there is an awful lot of isolation people a lot of lonely people a lot of solitariness and so we're to the degree that we become cut off and locked into our own self as the dominant force to that degree we sink we shrivel to that degree we're not living in the image and likeness of the father son and holy spirit but rather just the unholy trinity of me myself and i and there's a lot of suffering that comes from that we look at the gospel today that speaks of the suffering of isolation we see the leper coming to the lord and the lepers they were had which was it's not exactly clear the precise disease that was under the term the ancient term of leprosy but it was seen to be something contagious something that forced a person to live apart to be isolated to live outside the camp and whenever coming near society near other people to say unclean unclean lonely isolated cast off off away not to be near other people and that's the greatest punishment you know in prisons one of the most severe punishments is solitary confinement which goes totally against our nature as people made for relationship of love with others and so the leper comes to jesus and he begs him anneals to him and says if you choose you can make me clean you can release me from my isolation not only from the physical disease for the lord cured many diseases but in this case you can release me from my isolation and i can once more live and breathe again because i can be in relationship with others and the lord moved with pity stretched out his hand and touched him think about it he touched the leper and the leper was made clean he first gave him that relationship of love of respect and he also healed him and that he said go to the priest and fulfill what the society requires to certify that you can be once more in society again and so off he went proclaiming what had happened jesus healed the physical disease as he heals different diseases but he healed the man of that which afflicted him most which is not the condition of his skin but the isolation from society he helped him to live in relationships of generous love which are modeled on the very foundational relationship of father son and holy spirit and so too we need to think of that in this society so super connected and so disintegrated we are not integrated we are not so free to love in a natural ordinary way the people around us but we have a sterile connectivity in which we can be disconnected and connected in a very narrow way i've often told the story once that i was at a meeting of all things a bunch of people talking about uh catholic education and we at the break we all pulled out our little phones so we all were absent to those who were present became present to those who are absent there's something odd in that so we need to think about that as we reflect upon the fact we're made to live in the name of the father son and holy spirit that's where we find ourselves in relationships of generous love and not in isolation obviously it's an important point during this time of pandemic when for practical reasons as indeed for the unclean unclean of the first reading sensible reasons that people need to keep a physical distance and all that stuff and prevent their virus if they have it from going out to harm other people this is to love other people it's a care for others it actually is a relationship of love to care to protect others in so far as it is that it is sensible and we respect that but really there comes a point at which if this just goes on and on we begin to realize what is being lost we're not meant to look upon every other person as a source of infection i mean is that how we relate to one another we got to get out of that and that's why we pray and hope that in due time and quickly as soon as possible we were able to get rid of that because that if that begins to settle into us that's a very dangerous thing and we think of the number of people who are suffering in this when they are locked down as the leper was locked down in his outside the camp there's a price that is paid in the human spirit and although it is great i hope it's helpful to people that through you know the camera you can hear the words and participate in some way but this church should have people in it i mean this is the mass no matter what it's the lord god does it but really and we need to be prudent we are very strict and prudent out of love for other people not some command from somebody but out of love distance and stuff like that and so far as it is absolutely needed and we do that scrupulously but it's time to think about the damage that is done um think of all the isolated people maybe we can reach out in now before and even before we get this this sort of restriction lifted this in humane restriction we can reach out to people we're supposed to be doing we need to do that as a family of love and care let's do that pray for others reach out to them call them phone them skype them do whatever but we need to do that and pray for the rapid restoration of that humane reality our neighbors are not sources of danger they we can't let that settle into us we are called to love we also think in in this country these are days of sadness days of tragedy days of deep tragedy for in our capital city in ottawa our parliamentarians are busy about the expansion of lethal injection i call it lethal injection i don't call it medical assistance and dying for those are words that are used to hide reality it is what it is it is not medical assistance to people who are dying it is someone is sick or even not so sick depending on how it's all very subjective and needles put in and they die now that's not you know what that means i think which word should say a word should carry the burden of meaning they should not be empty cars trains that go by with nothing in them sad days in our country sad sad days is our government without any concern really for conscience protection is and i said years ago at a meeting in parliament intensifying these so-called protections these whatever safeguards are marketing tools so that we'll get it in and then snap snap stop they're all snapped off and that's what's happening right now so let's pray pray about that and recognize why do people why are they rushing to this what's happening here well to some degree it is a concern of fear and understandable about pain and so it is legitimate and real and that's why we need to we do thank medical science for helping to control maybe think of palliative care of which we have very little in this country that can help people not just medically but in other ways sometimes people though are afraid i do not want to continue living because i'm lonely what's the point and that's why we need to reach out in relationship and love and friendship care for people we don't need instructions for that we need to love people make nobody should ever feel that their life is not worth living we need to reach out to them care and love that's what our lord calls us to and sometimes people feel i'm a burden to my family i am a burden i mean people never feel that we need to reach out and help and and be with those who may feel that way that we are all loved respected cared for it's in the building of those relationships of generous love that we see that this terrible path in which our country is traveling so rapidly is not the right way there are other ways and we must provide them through love through practical care and love for we're made in the image and likeness of god we're called to love one another and not and we're also not called to say it's my life i can do what i want no we're not autonomous little islands our life of each of us is a gift to everyone else we're not little islands of autonomous will we're called to live in relationships of love and when those are broken down we call each one of us let's reach out and show that practical care remember people love them let people not feel isolated unclean as the as the leper is in the gospel today let people not feel that we need to reach out that we can do that we must do what the government does the government does but we need to do what we're called to do and what we're called to do in every way to pray for everyone as we do at every mass to pray every day for those people around us to do so care for people reach out phone contact people show that love to do it every day and in our generous care for others in our forgetfulness of ego and are reaching out to those who are lonely all the lonely people where do they all come from to all the people who are lonely and if we are lonely and reaching out we lose our loneliness in that way in all of this through our gentle loving presence personal presence we not only pray in the name of the father and the son of the holy spirit but through that practical love we live in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen and now let us join together in our profession of faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under consciousness he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures and is seated at the right hand of the father you will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the
