a blessed morning dear brothers and sisters in christ welcome to carmelite monastery we are now on the eighth sunday in ordinary time in observance of the feast of saint peter the apostle there will be a second collection which will be provided to the pontifical mission societies in support of the mission territories in the philippines and outside the philippines dear brothers and sisters in today's gospel jesus reminds his disciples about the right conduct toward recognizing the faults of others jesus does not prohibit correcting those who ear or are in a sinful state the governing thought of jesus is that passing judgment should be done in the spirit of prayer great humility compassion and love hypocrites are concerned only with a splinter of one's eye and do not recognize their own self-blinding blank do we humbly recognize our sins and errors do we pass judgment with arrogance and pride let us now rise and welcome our lord jesus christ in the person of his minister reverend father ray christian he's gone [Music] [Music] [Music] we begin our celebration the name of the father the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god the commune of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit brethren let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries we say i confess almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i greatly sinned my thoughts and my words what i have done what i failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary of a virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us everlasting life amen [Music] oh [Music] see [Music] see [Music] glory to god in the highest [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] on earth [Music] to you [Music] is [Music] [Music] my [Music] me [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Applause] the glory of god [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] let us pray grant us o lord we pray that the course of our world may be directed by your peaceful rule and that your church may rejoice untroubled in her devotion the lord jesus christ your son loves and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen the need for being prudent in words and actions is among the various councils assembled by sirach the first reading a reading from the book of sirach when a sieve is shaken the husks appear so does one thinks or falls when one speaks as the test of what the pattern molds is in the furnace so interpolation is a test of the just the fruit of a tree shows the care it has had so too does one speech disclose the bent of one's mind praise the one before he speaks for it is then that people are tested the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] it lordy good to give thanks to you [Music] to give thanks to you it is good to give thanks [Music] to proclaim your kindness and your faithfulness [Music] no just one shot glory like the palm tree like a cedar of lebanon shall he grows there is shall flourish [Music] is [Music] even in old age we grow since the shall they be declaring oh just is the lord my rocking home there is [Music] issues [Music] lord it is good to give thanks to after the apostle paul explains the community according to the reality of resurrection he concludes it with a toyota song death no longer has effect to those who believe in the resurrection of christ the second reading a reading from the letter of saint paul to the corinthians sisters and brothers when this which is corruptible clothes itself with incorruptibility and this which is mortal clothes itself with immortality then the word that is written shall come about death is swallowed up in victory world then is your victory world death is your sting the sting of death is sin and the power of sin is in the law but thanks be to god who gives us the victory through our lord jesus christ therefore my sisters and brothers be firm steadfast always fully devoted to the work of the lord knowing that in the lord your labor is not in vain the word of the lord thanks be to god please alright [Music] [Music] shine like lights in the world as you hold on to the word of life [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit proclamation of the holy gospel according to saint luke glory to you jesus told his disciples a parable can a blind person guide a blind person will not both fall into a pit no disciples appear to the teacher but when fully learned or trained every disciple will be like his teacher why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own how can you say to your brother brother let me remove that splinter in your eye when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye you hypocrite remove the wooden beam from your eye first then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye a good tree does not bear rotten fruit nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit for every tree is known by its own fruit for people do not pick figs from thorn bushes nor do they gather grapes from brumbles a good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks dear friends the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ good morning with your brothers and sisters in christ happy sunday in the introduction of our mass for today we heard that we are approaching the lenten season by wednesday we are going to already observe ash wednesday and so this becomes the last season for the ordinary time we are to in a sense invited by the church to dispose ourselves for the lenten season my dear friends for that disposition to happen we consider our gospel for today and our gospel presents to us a parable of jesus the relation between interiority and our exteriority the relationship between our hearts and our behavior the relationship between one's inner disposition and one's quality of life our lord is at inviting us to move towards integration or in the interior is becomes manifest in the exterior when we in a sense practice what we preach and our behavior is simply a consequence of what is truly inside our hearts integration that's a lifelong process but we have to begin somewhere and to begin with that is today not tomorrow mother friends we are going through a lot of upheaval so to speak when we look at the situation nowadays for the filipinos it's over at the election time and for some authors they will describe our democracy as election and as an election time democracy also we can't miss we should not miss out on what is happening globally and it's good that at the start of the mass we are reminded to pray for ukraine as christians we should be concerned about what's happening around us as christians we have to develop that sensing that faith is not simply personal but it is communal it has a societal element as christians you have to move from the century to the world because the kingdom is to be built as such the kingdom of god is to be built given the human realities that we're it should permeate our lives it should enter into politics it should enter into economics it should purify culture faith is something to say also about the environment so our faith is as such an integral faith and thus our church has constantly been asking that we should move towards integral faith formation we all need formation that's why our gospel for today reminds us of that how can you say it your brother brother let me remove that splinter in your eye when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye you hypocrite remove the wooden beam from your eye first then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye we are called to look after each one we have to have the sensing that the church is a community once i was doing a lot of work of course i'm still the soccer director and one night we were doing the layout for adsum our newspaper and the staff told me um you can simply see your eyes from the eye of the other people have something to tell us and we learn also from others and so when we look at reality it's not simply our view of reality we have also to be open to the views of others in relation to reality because that's how we learn in the process that's how we do discernment that's how we we look at the application of faith now february 25th is a very uh important day for filipinos we just celebrated edsa and the bishops of the philippines have issued a pastoral letter commemorating the ed's revolution but at the same time giving us guidelines as to how to approach politics no less than the holy father is quoted in the pastoral letter what does pope francis has to say about our faith and politics a quote from ferratelli tutti politics is a lofty vocation and one of the highest forms of charity in as much as it seeks the common good and the pope even asks a question can our world function without politics that has something to say with how we conduct ourselves in the political sphere my dear friends unless we allow also others to help us in the discernment process we can't truly say that we have reached integral faith formation a person has something to say and hopefully that something to say flows from his obligation as a baptized what can we say the medium of communicating has changed in this world and the field now is the social media and we have seen how a lot of things are placed in social media that are not in consonance to faith for a lot of materials there undermine the truth and so our bishops in this pastoral letter said that we should be conscious that social media is actually experiencing a pandemic of lies but our bishops wants us to reflect what are we to say about this with this pandemic of lies my [Music] um is already given that there are troll forms in relation to the spread of fake news and distortions and the memory of edsa is is experiencing a such a lot of historical revisionism a lot of historical misinformation and distortion and what have we done or else what the parable that we have for today will in a sense apply to us jesus told his disciples a parable can a blind person guide a blind person will not both fall into a pit experience doing formation work and doing giving retreats to young people allow me to to have a privilege to hear stories from the young and what usually happens is that if their life is empty somebody enters into that foreign [Music] and that should be how we look at things when we discern it doesn't happen in a vacuum it happens in a context and the context is human experience that's why it is beautiful that our lord's parable centers on this incapacity we've been inviting people have gone through the martial years and they share their experiences are we to simply negate their experiences we might not be physically blind it's hard to relate to a person who is blind unless you have the experience of blindness um [Music] if not they have not gone through the experience especially those who have suffered in the process and the same is true with all of our human experiences and that's why jesus is telling us how can you guide the person how can you guide the person if you are not even familiar with the terrain we can simply be dismissive we can simply be indifferent to the stories of these people precisely because we're coming from a perspective that yeah we have not gone through that so it's difficult to relate that's why i see the genius in jesus if you are not physically blind then you look for that blindness that is also in you and what form of blindness that is in each one of us it is a spiritual blindness an attitude of indifference an attitude of being close-minded an attitude of not being able to accept and see the facts it's not simply about an opinion but it is about facts we have to distinguish opinion from facts facts of life or we might not be blind but let us acknowledge we are also perhaps suffering from not physical blindness but spiritual blindness indifference not being open to people and not being open to facts blindness indifference not being open but this call is for all of us as a community i like the words of our bishops in the pastoral letter because they believe in us would like to read that part we trust in your capacity to discern what is true and good we all seek the common good and in the light of the gospel of jesus let us follow the path of truth goodness justice and peace not the path of violence vengeance and evil in each one of us there's that capacity and it's good to hear people believing in that capacity for us to discern what is good and evil you listen to the stories of people who are in the brink of saying hopelessness but hey miracles happen but at least someone asking i think that is where we should start in terms of our disposition when we enter holy week we allow the gospel we allow faith to say something about our lives because that is where we should start and once we allow the lord to say something then we are on a path towards true discipleship our light remains to be jesus at the end of the pastoral letter of the bishops they say in our sincere prayer that we find a truth who is none other than jesus the way the truth and the life is the way the truth and the life we cannot experience fullness of life unless we experience the way and what is the way the ways of the lord a life of contradiction a life of duplicity a life of lies but we can only do that when we have clear standards on how to conduct our lives correct that's where the church enters the picture the church simply provides the standards or ten commandments you should learn to believe in that that you have that capacity oh thou shalt not kill thou shall not steal but like it thou shalt not bear false witness [Music] what's happening here perhaps it's not physical blindness but spiritual blindness may have a good form below spiritual blindness alone hardness of heart i mean old testament in the case of the pharaoh when his heart [Music] so irrational it's so unbecoming of a rational being it's so unbecoming of a christian so it may not be physical blindness or it may not be spiritual blindness but that can be also caused by a hardened heart my dear friends jesus is the way the truth our standards are there amuni and from there let us choose the kind of life that we are to live sayam because when we continue to maintain our blindness sayyam the lord has provided us with clear indications on how to choose the church has reinforced those indications given the context of our experience as a people lastly the gospel gives us by their fruits you shall know them that's also a good indicator of how to proceed in terms of discernment what's the fruit how's our action how does he live his own life so when we choose a candidate when we choose something when we decide on something look at the fruits so that when we discern we don't discern in a vacuum my dear friends hopefully as we continue to celebrate this holy sacrifice of the mass we are moving towards further integration in our own faith experience so that we live a life that is truly befitting of our name as christians we thank the lord for the gift of the church we thank the lord for the gift of this faith that has something to say about how we do things amen let us all rise and profess our faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god and true god begotten and made consubstantial with the father to him all things were made for as men for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary became man for our sake was crucified and pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with scriptures he ascended into heaven and seated at the right hand of the father who will come again in glory church to live in the dead his kingdom will have no end i believe the holy spirit the lord the giver of life the proceeds of the father and the son for the father the son is adored and glorified was spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess on baptism for the forgiveness of sins and look forward to the resurrection of the dead the life of the world to come amen my dear friends let us pray to our heavenly father that we may see his son jesus among sinners and look upon them with mercy and compassion with humility and trust we pray lord listen to our prayer lord listen to our prayer may pope francis bishops priests deacons and all church leaders see their ministry not as superior over anyone but as humble service for god's people we pray lord listen to our prayer may those who govern our country become conscious of their role as stewards of god's people who encourage and recognize the potentials and talents of their constituents we pray may we live patiently by bearing each other's imperfections and not keeping a list of faults and failures of others we pray lord listen to our prayer may we receive the sacrament of reconciliation often so that we can build a community that cultivates the healing power of god's compassion we pray lord listen to our prayer may medical and health care professionals and social workers ease the pain and burden of the sick the handicapped the elderly the depressed and those who are undergoing different forms of crisis in life we pray lord listen to our prayer prayer for our beloved dead that through the saving mercy of god they may reach eternal life we pray lord listen to our prayer let us pray for the urgent concerns of our community and our personal intentions we pray lord listen to our prayer continue to pray for ukraine may the god lord intervene and may people of good will come into the picture for the resolution of the conflict we pray to the lord lord listen to our prayer listen to the prayers of your children lord grant us the capacity to forgive from our hearts so that we may be one with you who live and reign forever and ever amen [Music] my [Music] oh [Laughter] [Music] [Music] is [Music] his name for our good and the god of all this holy church oh god who provide gifts to be offered to your name and count our oblations as signs of our desire to serve you with devotion we ask of your you are indeed holy lord the fount of holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like a dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time was betrayed and entered willingly to his passion he took bread giving thanks broke it and he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] there forces all by the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence
