[Music] do [Music] do [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] do [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] some people are more comfortable speaking out than others some people have more experience talking in front of groups more confident in expressing what they want to say others find that more difficult even among friends some will find it easier to open up than others some will talk more others less [Music] by inviting us all to walk together as a synodal church pope francis has reminded us that we all have a right and a responsibility to speak out to share with each other our thoughts and our feelings as brothers and sisters in god's family for the good of that family in fact it's only when we all feel free to speak out that the voice of god can be most clearly heard but how can we do that [Music] how can we work together in creating an atmosphere in which we all feel comfortable speaking and confident we will be listened to what would encourage you to talk about faith and religion and church conversely what might discourage you or others are there particular groups whose voice is rarely heard or who feel undervalued not listened to what puts them off what can we do to encourage those on the margins to re-engage and contribute to our journey towards a synodal church a church where we all work together and feel that we are all walking together companions on the journey while we all have a voice and something to say that's worthy of being listened to and respected who do we trust to represent our views to others how do we choose them what do we look for in those who will speak for us listening is fundamental to the journey we are on but listening will only take us forward when we are also prepared to speak boldly and responsibly [Music] [Music] [Music] do [Music] [Music] do [Music] [Music] [Music] please take note that today's second collection will be for the priests and seminarian fund thank you for your generous support we welcome you to this eucharistic celebration today we celebrate the first sunday of lent eoc and the readings can be found on pages 841 onwards of your sunday missile on this sunday is celebrated the rite of election or enrollment of names for the catechumens who are to be admitted to the sacraments of christian initiation at the easter vigil using the proper prayers and intercessions the team for today is also jesus is lord today we praise god for the marvelous things he did for our ancestors when he heard the cry of distress and with his mighty hand and outstretched arm led them to freedom what he did for them he still does for us in jesus the lord who conquered sin and death let us now stand for the entrance him believe and repent me the [Music] me [Music] oh [Music] we gather in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the grace of our lord jesus christ the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all right good evening dear brothers and sisters in christ so today this week we begin the first sunday of land so land is a time of grace it is a time of opportunity given to us by the lord for renewal for repentance and to return to him so the traditional practices are prayer fasting and almsgiving to help us loosen our dependence on things and to depend on god and today as we begin the season of land we also welcome our catechumens and officially enroll them as catechumens of the church let us now prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries by first acknowledging our sins as we turn to the lord for he is full of mercy and compassion i confess almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly seen in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my fault through my phone through my most grievous voice therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] [Music] me [Music] [Music] me [Music] let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observances of holy land that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses said to the people the priest shall take the paneer from your hand and lay it before the altar of the lord your god then on the side of the lord your god you must take this pronouncement my father was a wandering aramian he went down into egypt to find refuge there few in numbers but there he became a nation great mighty and strong the egyptians ill-treated us they gave us no peace and inflicted harsh slavery on us but we called on the lord the god of our fathers the lord heard our voice and saw our misery our toil and our oppression and the lord brought us out of egypt with mighty hand an outstretched arm with great terror and with signs and wonders he brought us here and gave us this land a land where milk and honey flow here then i bring the first fruits of the produce of the soil that you lord have given me you must then lay them before the lord your god and bow down in the side of the lord your god the word of the lord [Music] [Music] be with me o lord in my distress he who dwells in the shelter of the most high and divides in the shade of the almighty says to the lord my refuge my stronghold my god in whom i trust [Music] upon you no evil shall fall no plague approach where you dwell for you as he commanded his angels to keep you in all your ways [Music] [Music] they shall bear you upon their hands lest you strike your foot against a stone on the lion and the viper you will tread and trample the young lion and the trigon [Applause] [Music] his love he said on me so i will rescue him protect him for he knows my name when he calls i shall answer i am with you i will save him in distress and give him glory [Music] [Music] is a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans scripture says the word that is the faith we proclaim is very near to you it is on your lips and in your heart if your lips confess that jesus is lord and if you believe in your heart that god rest him from the dead then you will be saved by believing from the heart you are made righteous by confessing with your lips you are safe when scripture says those who believe in him will have no cause for shame it makes no distinction between jews and greek all belong to the same lord who is rich enough however many ask for his help for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord [Music] glory praise to you [Music] man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of god [Music] [Music] glory the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke filled with the holy spirit jesus left the jordan and was led by the spirit through the wilderness being tempted there by the devil for 40 days during that time he ate nothing and at the end he was hungry then the devil said to him if you are the son of god tell this storm to turn into a love but jesus replied scripture says man does not live from bread alone then leading him to a height the devil shot him in a moment of time all the kingdoms of the world and said to him i will give you all this power and the glory of these kingdoms for it has been committed to me and i give it to anyone i choose worship me then and it shall all be yours but jesus answered him scripture says you must worship the lord your god and serve him alone then he led him to jerusalem and made him stand on the parapet of the temple if you are the son of god he said to him throw yourself down from here for scripture says he will put his angels in charge of you to guard you and again they will hold you up on their hands in case you hurt your foot against a stone but jesus answered him it has been said you must not put the lord your god to the test having exhausted all these ways of tempting him the devil left him to return at the appointed time the gospel of the lord so this sunday we begin the first sunday of land land is a period of 40 days in which we prepare ourselves to celebrate the paschal mystery of the death and resurrection of jesus and the means are of preparing ourselves our prayer fasting arms giving and other good works lent is an invitation from god to repent of our sins and return to a life of grace the ashes we receive on ange wednesday as a reminder that we are but dust and so we need to give our whole dependence on god alone and praying fasting and arms giving can make us more humble and help us realize that we depend totally on god alone and without god we perish the first reading is about acknowledging our total dependence on god moses asked the people that went they enter the promised land and they start to plant the first fruits of the harvest belongs to god and that is an acknowledgement that everything comes from god and a portion must be given back to god the first fruits belong to god because the land is given by god and he provides the sunshine and the rain and so the first fruits must be given to god via god's representatives on earth and these are the poor the often strangers widows and while offering the first fruits the israelites must also make an act of confession they have to recite their creed and this is to remind them that their faith is not just something that they recite it is something that must be concretized through good works and here it is represented by offering the first fruits to god's representatives responsible psalm be with me o lord in my distress it's a prayer and an act of faith that god will take care of all our needs again total dependence on god the second reading also speaks about the profession of faith the temple caused the christians to proclaim their faith in the greatest act of god in history which is the resurrection of christ from the dead and saint paul said this profession of faith is with the lips and with the heart and the meaning of professing with the heart is through our lives so both words and actions and the gospel gives us the temptation of jesus and these temptations are presented through images that may not be so easy for us to understand today and they symbolize all the temptations that jesus had to face in order to be faithful to his father's will even unto death so all these temptations can be summarized into one main temptation that is we are tempted to be god ourself not to rely on god but to rely on our own serves the first temptation is to turn stones into bread and this comes after jesus had been fasting for a long time to turn stones into bread means to use all our power our resources our energy to satisfy our bodily hunger so this is the temptation to live for ourselves forget about god we are self-dependent and in response jesus quoted scriptures to show that we are not just physical beings with physical needs we are also spiritual beings with spiritual need and only god can truly satisfy our spiritual hunger the second temptation is about power jesus was tempted to worship the devil and all the powers in the world will be given to him power when properly used is a good thing because we can make decisions and do certain things for the benefit of others however power is often abused for personal gain we are tempted to use our power to enrich ourselves to control and dominate others although jesus is the son of god he never abuses his divine power but he always use it for the good of others he says even though he is the son of god he humbles himself as one who comes to serve and to give his life as a ransom for all so this is the proper use of power to serve the third temptation is about testing god to see if we can trust him or not the devil asks jesus to throw himself down from the highest point and the angels will hold him up by their hands since he is the son of god in reply jesus said we must not put the lord to the test jesus does not seek proof to believe in the father's love for him he has complete trust in the father's love for him even while he is hanging on the cross and it seems that even god has abandoned jesus but jesus never failed to doubt god's love for him and neither should we seek proof i ask god to show us to prove to us that he cares for us that he loves us especially when we are facing challenges and difficulties in life our faith is not based on something that we can see and touch our faith is something that we cannot see and touch but we believe and that is most important it is based on the certainty that god cares for us that god loves us that he will provide all that we need so we cannot test god we should never taste god we just have the faith to believe that he cares for us so my dear brothers and sisters as we read these temptations of jesus they represent all the temptations that we face not just for one day but every day every day we are tempted to be our own boss every day we are tempted to do things my way every day we are tempted to use my authority my power my wealth for my own pleasure to satisfy my own bodily needs let us never forget that first and foremost we are totally and completely dependence on god without god we are nothing we are just ashes so as we begin this season of land let the ashes remind us that we are only ashes and that the proper attitude is one of humility and total dependence on god and as we begin the season of land we welcome our catechumens and officially accept them or enroll them as catechumens of the church on that journey to receive the sacrament of initiation we thank god for calling our catechumens and we continue to journey with them and pray for them not just until their baptism and so on but each day of their life because faith is a constant journey it's not something that we that we start and ends with our baptism baptism is only the beginning of our faith so every day we have to rely on god we have to pray and be humble and depend on god and ask god to help us let us now begin this rite of election i invite all the catholics and their sponsors please stand up right reverend bishop easter is drawing near and so this catechumen whom i now present to you are completing their period of preparation they have found strength in god's grace and support in our community prayer and example now they ask that after the celebration of the scrutiny they be allowed to participate in the sacrament of baptism confirmation and the eucharist those who are to be chosen in christ please stand up with your sponsors my dear friends these catechumens have asked to be initiated into the sacramental life of the church this easter those who know them have judged them to be sincere in their desire during the period of their preparation they have listened to the word of christ and endeavored to follow his commands they have shed the company of their christian brothers and sisters and joined with them in prayer and so i announced all of you here the community has decided to call them to the sacraments therefore i ask their god parents to state their opinion once again so that all of you may hear dear god parents and sponsors as god is your witness do you consider these candidates worthy to be admitted to the sacraments of christian initiation and now i ask the whole assembly are you willing to affirm the testimony expressed about these catholics and support them in faith prayer and example as we prepare to celebrate the easter sacraments we are and now my dear catechumens i address you your own god parents and teachers and this entire community have spoken in your favor the church in the name of christ accepts their judgments and calls you to the eastern sacraments since you have already heard the call of christ you must now express your response to that call clearly and in the presence of the whole church therefore do you wish to enter fully into the life of the church through the sacraments of baptism confirmation and the eucharist then offer your names for enrollment these are the names of the candidates my dear brothers and sisters your name have been enrolled in the book of catechumens so i now declare you to be members of the elect to be initiated into the sacred mysteries at the next easter vigil god is always faithful to those he calls now it is your duty as it is ours both to be faithful to him in return and strive courageously to reach the fullness of truth which your election opens up before you god parents you have spoken in favor of these catechumens accept them now as chosen in the lord and continue to sustain them through your loving care and example until they come to shay in the sacraments of god's life let us all stand for the prayer of the faithful my brothers and sisters in the beginning of this period of land we look forward to celebrating at easter the life-giving mysteries of our lord's suffering death and resurrection these elects whom we bring with us to the easter sacraments will look to us for an example of christian renewal let us pray to the lord for them and for ourselves that we may be renewed by one another's efforts and together come to share the joys of easter that together we may fruitfully employ this lantern season to renew ourselves through self-denial and work of holiness let us pray to the lord our particulars may always remember this day of their election and be grateful for the blessing they have received from heaven let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that their teachers may always convey the beauty of god's word to those who search for it let us pray to the lord that their godparent may be living example of the gospel let us pray to the lord that their families far from placing any obstacle in the way of these curriculums may help them to follow the prompting of the spirit let us pray to the lord that our community during this lenten period may grow in charity and be constant in prayer let us pray to the lord that those who have not yet overcome their hesitation matters in christ and come to join our community as our brothers and sisters let us pray to the lord father of love and power it is your will to establish everything in christ and to draw us into his own embracing love guide the elect of your church strengthen them in their vocation build them into the kingdom of your son and seal them with the spirit of your promise we ask this through christ our lord amen my dear elect you have set out with us on the road that leads to the glory of easter christ will be your way your truth and your life until we meet again in for the scrutiny walk always in his peace let us now profess our faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things are made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became men for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen please be seated our offer through him is all to jesus i surrender [Music] oh is [Music] [Music] is to jesus [Applause] is [Music] [Music] is [Applause] [Music] sisters and brothers that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father give us the right dispositions of lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lantern observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating wordily the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim [Music] [Music] [Music] us [Music] you are indeed holy o lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consideration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ whose command will celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body we shall be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which shall be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] therefore o lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance if you are elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray oh lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope my servant worthy bishop the order of bishops all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you in your compassion a merciful father gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world to our departed brothers and sisters and to all who are pleasing to you at their passing from this life give kind admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom will bestow on the world all that is good through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say [Music] i will [Music] give us and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ so said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always offer each other the peace of christ [Music] [Applause] [Music] me oh [Music] [Music] god behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof bonnie said the word and my soul shall be healed [Music] my
