Summoning Thor's Hammer! (with A.I.)

have you ever wanted to summon thor's hammer even though this hammer looks pretty normal it's actually got some tech inside that allowed me to do that and i'll show you how we did it in just a few minutes but before i get to that i want to show you some of the other hammers i've made i put a giant capacitor into this one we've made tons of heavy hammers i mean this one doesn't even make sense we even have one that's impossible to lift i mean unless you're worthy [Music] hell i even caught lightning with this one and this one that was just weird and this one you can watch this video right could just strap a drone to one but i feel like that's been done before [Music] for this project to be a success it needs to do three things i need to be able to summon it to my hand i need to be able to use it like a hammer and it also needs to fly around magically smashing through stuff just like it does in the thor movies making a hammer fly by itself while still looking like a hammer i'm not sure if that's possible but what if we had some kind of giant invisible robot pass me the hammer what if we scaled up a 3d printer like this but instead of using these rods we used invisible cables then no matter where i was in the shop i could just put up my hand and the hammer would come to me charles i need you to make me a bigger version of this using a cable system inside the shop oh okay then we're getting a winch here's what i've built i've got three winches each with a cable going up to a pulley on the ceiling and then down to our payload which is going to be a 15 pound horse hammer but uh one step at a time by setting the length of each cable we can move this payload to anywhere in between the pulleys i can control each winch's servo motor through my computer here which is running a program i wrote that takes geometry of the pulleys on the ceiling input from this playstation controller feeds them through an inverse kinematics equation and spits out the cable length for each winch one of two things is going to happen either it works perfectly we can control this thing with the joystick flawlessly and it's amazing right off the bat or something goes horribly wrong and this gopro gets sent recording on a quick tour of the shop from that corner probably landing in the machine shop or something who knows all right let's try it up up and away pretty well so far all right i do not know what just happened we got some calibration issues still but the important part is it is working now it's not very magical if you just have somebody hiding behind a curtain steering the hammer with a playstation controller so what we need is some sort of asgardian autopilot or something this is a z2 stereo camera we've used them before on projects they make it really easy to track people in 3d so easy that it actually took like an hour or so to tie it into our programs that you could throw the hammer at whoever has their hand raised by pressing this button now we just need to test it and tune it in but because it's really difficult to get the coordinate system for this and the robot to line up we're probably going to have some problems with that should all be ready to go let's try this let's fix that [Music] okay this time should definitely work but you know what the [Music] okay take 27 let's do this yes i am worthy all right [Music] no james come check this out where that kissy [Music] so the cable system works great but having a thor hammer on strings that doesn't make it real so i've actually developed this quick release system that's actually going to release the cable mechanism allowing you to take the hammer and bring the hammer down basically we've hidden a capacitive touch sensor in the handle of the hammer and when you press this it engages the solenoid which releases all the cables it's that simple inside you can see it's powered by a small lipo battery here with a battery monitor and the system should be robust enough that you can still swing the hammer around and do some damage to see a complete circuit diagram on how this system works check out our page on maker.io by the way if you guys are looking to buy electronic ton of other features so this seems to work pretty good but we're gonna have to test it with charles's system so let's put this back together here's our new hacksmith tools screwdriver so i've actually been using this type of screwdriver for the past 10 years and it's actually really cool it's called a retractability and they're actually made right here in kitchener ontario canada just like three two one all right now when you send it back i want you to clock daryl right in the camera oh okay that was sweet i like the full speed all right should we do it all right let's see if this works come on yeah i'm still worthy all right that works great let's test it out for real uh we need to just sort of a few more little things in the code first all right you take that i'm gonna go get dressed get get dressed oh a new stuff made here video and it's a cable robot do you figure he ran into the same problems that we did maybe he is a professional apparently my brakes don't work i need to fix those and probably about a thousand other things it affects this and about a thousand other things we broke a cable structure function [Music] we can catch and release the hammers but we need more i've gone and programmed it a couple fun features that we can control this thing from the safety of our very own comfy bunker feature number one is a waypoint system this will let us recreate this scene from the movies we can set up multiple targets and with the press of one button smash all of them in a row feature number two with a couple hundred lines of code i've added a throw mechanic it locks in the speed of the hammer accelerates at 300 percent and sends it in that direction with these two mechanics we'll be able to smash some stuff now we just need james hey james we're ready to test i'm still worthy [Music] to daryl rob oh he had his hand up rob [Music] really surprised that worked [Music] now the release mechanism could probably use a bit of work it's kind of finicky from putting your thumb right here to then having to lift up there we go there we go yeah oh no i think that worked pretty good yeah what do you say we let the team try yeah but maybe not with a steel hammer that's kind of dangerous i may have nearly killed the cameraman daryl with the hammer earlier roll that clip oh this feels like a bad card oh all right let's play a little game and see who's worthy on the count of three we all raise our hand and see who the hammer comes to three two one come on i'm worthy obviously yeah all right if you guys want to crack come on over just raise your hand and it's going to come right at you [Applause] what try again was it mister it was meant to yeah i don't know just it just came to me yeah three two one come on it doesn't smell fair look gold order [Applause] [Music] if if i now now it should come to me [Applause] i'm gonna go cry now try now up higher oh my god [Applause] [Music] you did it [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] oh god [Applause] let's see how much damage this thing could do and honestly it's a little scary because that thing weighs like 15 pounds and it goes at speeds of over 20 kilometers an hour something like that so we got some blast shields set up for the uh the editors and i'm a little terrified of even throwing it we got some stuff to smash let's see what happens [Music] set it up knock him down two one oh god there goes the cable ah we're good i think we just lost the leader it's gone for our next trick i'm going to be smashing this vase of flowers using remote control mode here we go nailed it [Music] out of the way up up wow here we go that's backwards other forward other forward [Music] did you uh mean to do that three two one smash that worked way better than knocking it off the table again again up and down up and down [Applause] how did that rip the hammer open oh the hammer broke guys the hammer the pins we're gonna need to modify a hammer real fast yep all right we need a metal hammer i got one under my desk so fun fact this is actually the one that i caught lightning with you can see it's all charred up and stuff and now we're gonna smash things with it all right i got eye bolts they're a little big yep the emergency backup hammer no more cable brakes no more cable brakes all right everyone good to go three two one yeah oh man that was great [Music] three two one yeah we missed the first night but the rest looked pretty cool [Music] so james there's a super special feature that i added while you were getting all dressed up there hold this hold this other button on the controller you can just back drive the thing but when you let go of it it takes the speed and it keeps moving increases it significantly and launches it in that direction as hard as it can alrighty three two one holy that was his head [Music] [Laughter] oh and soul just left his body sorry owen with his head [Music] we've programmed a series of key frames so the hammer is going to fly through the bag guys which in this case are some plates and an alarm clock just like it did in the movies so the thor hammer has a mind of its own and he's just like oh there goes the alarm there you
