hey fellow gardeners it's almost my favorite time of the year what time is that summer container season Dawn here from seasonal designs I gardened in Wisconsin zone 5B and those of you who know me know that I love to do summer containers not only for myself but for my clients today I am going to be sharing some of my ideas and re recipes with you so you can use them in your summer containers well let's get this planting party started by taking a look at two of my favorite urns they're located outside um my back patio they're about 2 and 1/2 ft tall 2T wide at the top and they are made of a heavyduty clay and then they are glazed they're a Michael car container I love to change these up year after year with something different now this particular year I used a beautiful white Gora as the centerpiece love the Gora it it looks like little white butterflies kind of dancing on the tips of your plant in the wind they get big and beautiful and then as you guys know I like to pack my containers full I want them to look good from day one until the end of the season and I do that by packing them full now what you're going to see is the super Tunas are going to take over in this thing but in initially for about a month and a half you see all of these things and there's super tunia mini Vista Scarlet there's super tun Vista jasberry there's super beina Imperial blue there is Beth's blue isotoma there's also Diamond Frost Euphoria in there and then of course the Goldilocks creeping jenny down the front now as you'll see in this video as time goes on more and more of this will get covered up and really the next picture you're going to see is when you see the super Tunas and the super beina and the Gora and beautiful beautiful combination here's everything you need to plant up that container all right next up same container different year now in this one I had the lime green um sweet potato vine as well as a lime green colius in here and to begin with you could really see those but again as the Season War on then that super tunia started kicking in the Million Bell started kicking in and the the cleome is the thing that really got enormous and like literally covered everything else up but once again it turned out gorgeous it's kind of like you put all this pretty stuff in and the strongest eventually by after a month or two will take over but I loved how this container turned out and I I put that Beth's blue isotoma in the ground around each of the containers for a beautiful touch so in this container your main players are the cleome the cosmos the Sweet Caroline sweet potato vine the million bells and cherry red the poopa in White and the super tunia Daybreak charm all right here we are the third recipe in these containers this one is really focused on this beautiful colus called trusty Rusty and this guy got enormous these were in full sun and I had a Cana in the back Center of this thing and I just worked with the oranges and the bright lime green colors beautiful combination you can see here I packed it full some of these things kind of lost ground the the black colus eventually got eaten up um but this container just got bigger and bigger and Beautiful by the end of the season I just let her go so in this one it it's the colus trusty Rusty a Cana in Orange a colus in Black I had a Biden in yellow I had the calabra COA in deep orange and then of course the creeping jenny coming right down the center all right this is the last recipe in this particular container this one I did a red mandav Valia Vine as my centerpiece and this was just focused on hot colors hot Reds hot pinks hot oranges lime green and the other really pretty piece of this was the geranium with the variegated leaves and it had a little bit of a red color it turned out so so pretty in this container so the recipe for this one was the red mandav valine a geranium with variegated leaves I have super Bea red in here I have a calabra orange I have Homestead hot pink verbina as well as the gold creeping jenny next up are two resin containers that look like clay they are out in the elements 24/7 I've had them for at least 25 years this particular recipe starts with the purple fountain grass as the centerpiece and and I've added in the blue scava a petunia color Rush pink star white verbina and a margarita lime sweet potato vine really a simple recipe but quite beautiful same containers different recipe but repeating that purple fountain grass as the Thriller it's a beautiful plant for summer but it also can take you through fall and even into winter and then adding to that the super tunia Royal Velvet the super Bell's cherry and a white bopa and of course having that stand out against the background of that yellow coreopsis there in the background really makes that container pop next up are my new Planters I call them my bird bath Planters they sit on about 3 and 1/2t pedestal with these large very large but shallow ears on top of them and they flank the entry to my cutting garden and vegetable garden area love the way these turned out I planted a lot of purples in here starting with super beina Imperial blue super beina stormburst I have Salvia velocity blue here in the center I also added a scava Indigo touch there's also Diamond Frost euphoria Aria in here there's also crazy tunia black and white and then some creeping jenny in Gold uh the other thing that I had in here and you don't really see it right now is there was ageratum in Violet which was beautiful touch early on but it did kind of get lost in this entire mix but really simple really pretty these are my Savannah urns from unique stone and they flank the entryway to the greenhouse I also love using the sphere that I have in the center of these it's like it was made for this container now this particular recipe I I'm going to be honest not a favorite of mine I started with this cadium in the center called tickle me pink and it did not tickle me well at all I was very disappointed with it it pretty much was a noshow also in here was sweet alysum white night a crazy tunia called bitter lemon a calab bcoa called hot Rose a geranium strawberry Sizzle and then Sedum lemon Coral about Midway through the season the sweet alysum did take over thank goodness uh because it saved these containers but I these were not a favorite recipe of mine but I think it's good to include ones that maybe don't turn out exactly like you had hoped same earns different recipe this one turned out really well except for my centerpiece my calasia which is Royal Hawaiian Maui gold calasia you can see how small it is here just planted these up but those never really did what I expected them to do they were supposed to grow three feet tall and kind of hover over this hot pink and lime green base of color and the base was fantastic everything in the bottom did well but the calasia never really hit its stride I don't know if my season just wasn't long enough or it just wasn't happy but nonetheless it still was quite a lovely container I would do this again but I would maybe use something else as my filler so in this the recipe for this is the Royal Hawaiian Maui gold Cal there's calabra COA rose quartz which was fantastic there was a rainbow spurge there was cavola fashion pink there was also gamina hot pink and then gold Mountain Sedum and my idea for this was everything was going to stay kind of within the confines of the container nothing was supposed to spill over and hide my gorgeous container now these two containers flank the entryway to one of my client's homes and her favorite colors are Reds and purples and this is a very simple recipe but wow wow did these turn out stunning I had a red Mand deelia Vine in the center I added scava Indigo touch a super tunia Royal Velvet and in the beginning there was also a red geranium in here which eventually got swallowed up by the super super tunia but it didn't matter because these were stunning and had these been at my house I probably would have moved them into my Greenhouse come fall so that I could have enjoyed them throughout fall and part of winter they turned out absolutely beautiful next up is another set of client containers but these are out in front of their storefront a very simple re recipe using the pink mandavia Vine for the center the lobilia blue carpet and then gold creeping jenny simple recipe but absolutely stunning these particular containers got me three additional clients that were just down the way from this storefront because these containers were so striking absolutely beautiful next up is an unusual container I planted up this Michael car 9 Hole strawberry container to make it a focal point kind of on a pedestal in my front garden the recipe for this one is a verbina bonariensis a Wy key Sunset lysia and a red pentis and this one turned out really neat you can see that that verbina just really got enormous in the center of this container was very striking centerpiece in my front garden the two plants I interspersed throughout the holes in the bottom I tried to keep them a bit more pinched back so they stayed a little lower and it really turned out very lovely now the one thing I will tell you about this is you really need to keep this baby watered because it did tend to dry out a little quicker so I did feel like I was watering this every day but I absolutely love the way it turned out and I'm likely to repeat this one over and over again next up is another client container these were two large containers that flanked their entryway and you'll notice the leaves of this mandav Valia Vine are enormous they got absolutely huge in this container the recipe is the pink mandav Valia Vine million bells in hot pink a Scola as well as a creeping Jenny and this container just was really Lush and pretty right from the get-go but as this season waron you are going to see that the cavola which is a really pretty purple color really took over the other thing my client wanted was she just wanted the m mandav valine to just kind of spill out as opposed to um be tied up on a trellis and so that's what we did and it looked lovely next up is another client set of containers and these were two really really large baskets which I thought were really neat looking along with six hanging baskets and she just wanted a lot of color so we gave her a lot of color starting with the Salvia velocity blue in the center and then two super Tunas really red and Royal Velvet million bells Cabaret pink star and then a nesia in yellow creeping jenny again down the center sometimes the container really kind of steals the show or makes the show and then this is the container I did for her the previous year and sometimes the background really makes the container next set of client containers were four very large clay ears my client really loved pinks and yellows and so we chose a really pretty yellow mandavia in tree form a wet as well well as million bells in hot pink Lantana super Berry and then a really pretty variegated vinka there were four of these containers that were in each corner of the inground pool and by Midsummer they were just really Lush and gorgeous let's briefly talk about containers because sometimes you can really do anything in a container but sometimes you might have a container that dictates or suggests your color scheme for example this container here with that pretty deep blue and that orangey rust color you can see that in this one I used a deep dark Rich purple in this that really pulled that blue color the following year while I used some of the purples I focused more on that orangey rust color and then here again in this one you can see I have that little orange calra COA again pulling the orange from this really cool container now this little container I thought was kind of Moody it has that deep dark black midnight lace sweet potato vine which kind of pulled the dark color out of gaze Delight colus I added a red uh dragon wing Bonia and then the Gora with a pink and white flower now this little container was pretty small but it looked and acted really big with all of the flowers overflowing in this container there's a hot pink geranium there's a verbina in hot pink there's a million bells in purple and of course that creeping jenny in Gold really simple really pretty two things I want to talk about briefly the first thing is how I plant my containers up you guys know that I like to pack them full I really want them to look as good as possible for my clients immediately after planting and so typically I'm buying the larger size containers of annimals they typically are a good siiz plant many times they have some blooms on them so that when I'm done planting that container will look as good as possible they also are quicker to have that really gorgeous Lush full look in them and just to give you an idea the next picture I'm popping up is immediately after I planted one of my containers so I don't want you to feel like you need to pack it in like that you definitely can space them out according to the tag but just know it is going to take a little bit longer for your pot to get that beautiful Lush look the second thing I want to talk about is the soil you put in your containers you do want to make sure you're using a good quality container mix or potting mix that is designed specifically for a container don't use garden soil and certainly don't dig it up out of the ground I like to use a potting mix that has a little bit of a fertilizer in it and that'll give me like the first month and a half or so I don't have to worry about fertilizing after after that I like to use Jack's Blossom booster and I'm pretty much doing it on every two to three week schedule well that is going to be it for today's video I hope that I gave you a lot of great ideas if you found this video helpful I hope you'll consider subscribing to my channel as well as sharing my video I want to thank you guys for watching and we will see you real soon in the next video take care
