hello and welcome to comicdrake where i talk about comic books and my name is Drake Batman is a character that has been around for ages and I'm pretty sure that he's been adapted into other mediums more than any other superhero in existence and I think that's the main reason why so many people just get things wrong about him on a somewhat regular basis this is ordinarily not a problem but when these falsities are parroted all over the internet over and over and over again where people take them as fact well that's where I draw issue so today I'm gonna be taking a look at some Batman misconceptions and address them with a bit of my comic book expertise and before you guys go too crazy in the comments yes I know that what culture already beat me to this subject this is basically how that went down boy I sure can't wait to work on that video idea that I've had on the back burner for a while far thankfully I'm gonna be talking about some subjects they didn't mention in their video so I don't see it as too big of an overlap but also I want to make this very clear right here at the beginning of the video this is a comic book Channel and because of that anytime I make a video I am almost always referring to the mainstream comic book continuity version of characters unless I state otherwise so that's what we're focusing on for this video but let's actually start things off by taking a potshot at some comic book elitist so hey I run a comic book YouTube channel for a living and I'd be the first one to tell you that the source material for all of these movies TV shows video games etc is criminally overlooked but the outside media introduced concepts that are widely considered to be staples of the Batman mythos the most well-known is obviously Harley Quinn she was created for the animated series and later adapted into the comics similarly the animated series completely reworked mr. freeze into the iconic version that we know today introducing us to his current backstory involving his dying wife Nora let's also not forget that the freaking Batcave first appeared in a movie serial oh and how about how the Barbara Gordon version of Batgirl was originally created to be used in the Adam West Batman series this tradition even carries over into the modern era with the bridgit pike version of Firefly from Gotham being incorporated into the comics and with the titular arkham knight from batman arkham knight being set to appear in Detective Comics number 1,000 I know that I can dabble comic-book snobbery from time to time but there's a reason why these adaptations are so popular so let's give credit where credit's due like how about the you long forgotten co-creator of Batman it's finally being acknowledged in official works but for decades Bob Kane was credited as the sole creator of Batman yes Kane came up with the bat as seen here by a fan recreation but it was a man named Bill Finger that modified the concept into Batman as we know today for years Bill Finger wrote Batman comics for DC token come up with several key elements and characters that would help define the Batman mythos for decades to come while Bob Kane drew them however Kane received the full credit in the bulk of the earnings meanwhile finger was more or less forgotten to time until his recent string of credits there is a lot that I could say but that would turn into a video in and of itself if you get the chance I recommend the documentary Batman and Bill on Hulu it's well worth the watch especially if you're into comic book history how about this one I spent a good long time researching all of the training that Bruce underwent during his original journey to become Batman for my video on just that but a common recurring um actually was that he trained with Ra's al Ghul in the League of Assassins that was the case in the movie Batman Begins but not in the comics however Ra's al Ghul's alter-ego Henri Ducard was in fact one of his teachers Jaccard was a world-class assassin that Bruce eventually parted ways with due to a disagreement over his methods if you want more information then feel free to watch that training video it's pretty ridiculously in-depth and I'm still pretty proud of it one of the reasons that Bruce left a cards tutelage was because of his use of firearms which leads me to my next point Batman doesn't kill or use guns it's been pointed out a lot these days that Batman used a gun somewhat regularly when he was first created after all he was pretty heavily based on the shadow who's no stranger to them I will admit it's weird going back and reading these old Batman stories and then BAM he just has a gun it feels weird man it's also weird though when he kills people like this time that Batman pushed a spy onto a sword and talked about how it's better for him to die than to start an international incident it certainly doesn't feel like the character we know and love today I mean to be fair he's not considering that these old stories have since been relegated to an alternate universe but still feels weird anyway in the modern continuity Batman has been known to use guns on very special occasions take for instance Batman year two in order to stop a murderous vigilante called the Reaper Bruce decides to use a pistol however this wasn't just any gun it was the one that a crook named Joe Chill used to murder his parents the entire story is kind of like creepily obsessed about the gun and Bruce ended up getting rid of it by incorporating it into a building that the Wayne foundation was constructing even more famously though is when Batman shot Darkseid with a special bullet who in turn killed Batman with his powerful Omega sanction or did he look I get it superheroes die and come back to life on a pretty regular basis so there's a lot of people that assume that Batman's the same way well Bruce Wayne is one of the few popular superheroes who hasn't died in their main continuity when Darkseid hit Bruce with the Omega sanction it didn't kill him instead Batman was sent all across time which is where he became a caveman a pirate a witch hunter and etc but he made it back to the present and was just fine because Batman while we did see Batman get resurrected as a black lantern during the blackest night event that was just a cloned body while the actual Batman was off doing his time adventures then there was that time were Bruce seemingly died in an encounter with the Joker during the in-game storyline nope just amnesia in the meantime Commissioner Gordon took up the mantle of Batman remember that because I'll be referencing it in my next point yes Batman is a very stoic figure but he isn't devoid of all humor I mean come on he cracks jokes on a pretty regular basis remember when I just told you that Jim Gordon was Batman for a bit well when Bruce got his memories back he donned the cape and cowl once again and the first thing he said was replacement was hello Jim who died and made you Batman that's not a good Batman voice hello Jim Oh God nope never again or how about that time that he stole a plane and spray-painted in I owe you with a bat symbol in its place also I know that I'm focusing on the comics but I'd be doing a major to service to not play some of his jokes from the DC Animated universe so here's some of those Batman to wall points I could use some air support since I can't fly at all we come back here have Christmas dinner and watch it's a wonderful life you know I've never seen that I could never get past the title I've said it once and I'll say it again Batman has more friends and allies than pretty much any other superhero in comic book history Bruce Wayne knows that he can't do everything by himself it's one of the reasons why he has so many Robins and supporting characters there's a reason that he's a part of multiple Justice League's even at the same time then there's the outsiders Batman Incorporated in so much more he knows that he can't always solve crimes by himself when it comes to specific issues outside of his wheelhouse like the world of magic he'll go to friends and allies like Zatanna if he hits a roadblock in a case he hits up a detective chatroom even when Bruce gets in one of his dark moods alfred is usually there by his side making cucumber sandwiches if you've seen Batman Beyond then you know what happens when Bruce truly isolates himself and at least in the current series of the comics that's looking like it's not going to be the case anytime soon this ties a neatly to the next point that I want to make Batman can't be happy this is a subject that's being explored in Tom King's run on the series and while I'm enjoying it I kind of have to call BS we've seen plenty of happy moments in Bruce's life and honestly I think having all the affirmation relationships does wonders for him Bruce is a philanthropist and a humanitarian so with or without the costume I feel like he's happiest when he gets to help others I am by no means saying that his life is all sunshine and rainbows but I don't necessarily think that he's as broken as many people make him out to be sure there are definitely healthier ways to handle trauma than dressing up as a giant bat and punching dudes but Batman saves people on the regular and gets to watch his children grow up to also serve and protect which has to make him pretty proud and that's right I said children plural so this one is a bit odd since there's multiple misconceptions that arise from it the Robins how many did Bruce adopt the first Robin Dick Grayson was simply Bruce's ward for a long time and we learned that Bruce fully adopted a successor Jason Todd after the kid was killed by the Joker in a fit of rage Bruce questions dicks concern over Jason stating that he was jealous that Bruce it up in Jason and not him so Jason Todd's adoption check however take would later get adopted by Bruce and this was more of a symbolic gesture than anything else considering that he had been an adult for years at this point we also know for a fact that Tim Drake ended up getting adopted with him going so far as to start going by Tim Wayne as of the current continuity post flashpoint it doesn't seem like any of these adoptions are currently canon but what how crazy things have been regarding the Batman mythos and where it stands I feel like you can probably interpret it either way let's move on to Batman skills intelligence is something that isn't well-defined even in our real world as there's multiple different types of 8bc themselves tried to vaguely defined them over the years with levels and this is mostly used to describe bringing act as a 12th level intelligence while Batman is certainly up there for Earthlings he's outclassed by Lex Luthor personally I think and like to interpret that there were other smarter characters out there than Batman like mister terrific who's been classified as the third smartest man on earth for years however in Doomsday Clock number two Ozymandias identifies the two smartest people on the planet Lex Luthor and Bruce Wayne as numbers 1 and 2 respectively at the end of the day a character's intelligence depends on what the writer wants it to be but by and large it's Lex who's frequently seen to be the smarter of the two so in Bruce as one of these smartest people on the planet it makes sense that he's referred to as the world's greatest detective actually that's not entirely true so don't get me wrong Bruce is insanely smart and his skills extend far beyond most people but when it comes to dedicated fields there are plenty people that are just better Bruce has said that Tim Drake was on his way towards being the world's greatest detective and that is aptitude for it is greater than his a good amount of time has passed since he made that statement and we can very well be at the point where Tim is the better detective than Bruce after all he was doing such a good job of figuring out major details regarding the post flashpoint reboot that Superman sought to deceased dad had to kidnap him to take him off the board despite Tim's prowess though there is a better detective out there and his name is Bobo Robo tea chimpanzee or detective chimp as he's better known is insanely good at what he does and I am just so glad that he's finally getting attention from DCA my favorite soap bar has been an EDC rebirth holiday special the Canon is ambiguous but chip needs Batman's help for a case when Bruce refuses since he was busy with the mystery of his own Bobo responds by solving Batman's case there on the spot god I love this guy and finally this brings me to a pretty controversial statement look Batman is super smart crazy prepared and always has a contingency in his pocket for pretty much everything but prep time doesn't mean that he instantly wins every single fight look I love Batman a lot but while I think we need to acknowledge that he can overcome great odds and pull spectacular victories thanks to being prepared he can't work miracles admittedly this is more of an opinion than anything else in this video but of course pretty much every fight has Batman winning with some prep time that's just long-form superhero storytelling in a nutshell the good guys win and when they don't they collect themselves prepare and then they win Batman with prep time wins just like any other hero with prep time wins in their story it's called being the main character I know that last one's going to upset a lot of fanboys so feel free to take all of that rage and put it down there in the comments below and while you're down there what other Batman falsities have you seen across the internet that rustle your jimmies I want to hear about it too again down there in the comments below but if you like this video then why not consider subscribing or even watching another one and I mentioned it earlier on in this video but I actually have a dedicated episode to all of the training the Bruce Wayne underwent in order to become Batman so if that fascinates you go ahead and watch that but anyway I hope you learned at least a little something new and hopefully and I'll see you next time
