[Music] [Music] okay guys i cannot even remember when i last showed you this if you've even seen it in this state or not you probably have but i've had this on the wall for quite a while now and i've been looking at it at some point i was just going to completely paint over it but i think at this point it's salvageable and i like it enough that i want to keep working on it i'm also not feeling precious about it now because i just i just don't it's been on the wall long enough that i'm not feeling precious so i have not painted in days and days and i just want to paint i'm dying i'm going to start getting grumpy but i'm painting soon i'm not going to film any of this i'm going to set the camera down and just paint but i will show you what i do with it this is the one i don't know if you remember this this is the one with that lion head thing and the peacock that was back there i'm not feeling precious about those areas now either and i want to make this back area darker so i'm going to just tackle that i'm set up going to put a podcast on and paint yay for me i'm excited i don't even care if i mess this up if it looks terrible i just want to slap some paint i need it okay i thought i'd better pick up the camera to show you where i am i'm hoping that you agree that this is getting better i'm definitely having fun this pattern stuff and i'm about to add like a big leak right here to incorporate some of the color that i put in a couple other places some of the green i think will look really pretty there and i'm just gonna keep chopping away at it i will paint today and then i'll hang it up in the den and live with it i do still feel like this white table is too white but i'm going to just kind of leave it for now and see because if i end up bringing the colors lighter in the background so basically the floor or the background area then that won't look as white so i haven't decided yet how i want to deal with that so i'm going to just kind of leave it and keep chunking away at this but i think it's already looking really better that wasn't very good grammar i think it's looking better i know that for some of y'all you're like no no no we liked it before and who knows it could end up going back to more like what it was before that's one thing that's really great about me filming is that i have documentation because sometimes i look back the footage i'm like i need to go paint that back the way it was but for now i'm having fun i'm going to keep chunking away it's already three o'clock i've got a little more time to paint i'll pick up the camera tomorrow to show you what i do good morning i am thrilled with how this is coming along i still have little tweaks here and there but i am super super thrilled with the changes that are going on i'm thinking about possibly putting some legs on the table even though you don't have to put legs on your table because your brain does fill that in yeah there's just little bits here and there that i want to continue working on but i wanted to give you a little update and show you where i am with this all right this morning um what i want to do is get out my sketchbook because last night i worked quite a while on this and there's some finishing things and sometimes when i'm at the end and i'm not like playing anymore i'm kind of wanting to wrap something up i feel like i need to get warmed up first and i really wanted to do a still life i'd like to have these flowers but i don't really have much in the refrigerator at all right now so i just went got some of my fake flowers which i don't paint from very often and dried up grapes i mean these things are almost raisins i just kind of put some things i did not spend much time at all on this still life because i just really want to get to it i don't even like care that much about it being a great painting i just want to get my sketchbook out and play and i mean i thought a little bit about color actually because of that yellow back there i'm wondering i'm going to throw in my lemons let's get a lemon where are you lemons and often when i have a still life like this i don't really even go by what's there i just kind of pick and choose from the table i mean i want a setup that makes me you know excited but um when it's just going to be a sketch like this i really just don't want to spend a ton of time look here i am just fiddling wow i just need to throw some things sometimes you just need a bunch of things on a table and then you can just get started and i was looking back at some sketches last night because i was using some of these as reference let's see yeah i was looking at this leak here to remind me just of color and shape and then i used some of this as reference like this background here to inspire this i had a pink cloth basically it's just that piece of paper down but it felt like it needed something else so then i thought oh i'll do this right here and i started painting this but then i still had that pink and i thought oh okay so anyways that's what inspired that i loved like the stripes on this and i liked how i painted this basket like the color and this little guy by himself pretty much i'm gonna use this kind of a little bit as my inspiration i'm gonna put this on the floor and use some of the composition possibly i don't know actually what i have set up is nothing like that oh i miss painting bananas i have an old banana in the kitchen i'm gonna go get the old banana because it's inedible and that may be what my still life needs it needs a banana i love pancake bananas i'm gonna go get the banana okay well this thing is seeing way better days and it's looking extremely sad i don't even know if i can be inspired by that and bananas don't lay very well without partner they kind of need two of them all right banana what are we what are we gonna do with you oh i'll stick you back here maybe that will i don't know i think the banana might have to go that may not work i need some good fake fruit all i have with good fake fruit these lemons are really good i have some pears but they are so you can see them back there they're more of like a muted yellow i have so many muted yellow things yeah i have a lot of yellow stuff i need good like green ones and i would love some good fake fruit anytime i'm at an antique store and find fake fruit uh it's never like that good so i don't buy it but i do think i should buy some even if it's not that great because i wonder if it would be inspiring so that banana right there he kind of stinks too i don't know i just want to get to painting i'm going to go set up my sketchbook and slap some paint on and when i'm painting or setting up to paint i love listening to an art podcast and right now i've been binge listening to art wonk i'm sitting here editing and cracking up because the name of the podcast is art wank not art womp when i first found it i called it art wonk for forever when i get the name of something wrong in my head it sticks like for a long time and in a minute you're going to hear me talk about my excitement about the fact that i'm going to be on that podcast i'm farty interview had that interview and it's listed below if you want to listen to it but before i was going to be on there i was like i have got to get the name of this right and i would practice all the time like artwank not so anyways there's a link to the podcast below i hope you go check it out because it's really great and i'm actually going to get to be a guest on there soon i'm excited definitely check out art wonk it's two australian ladies that are friends and they're both artists and it's just really good they don't have it's not like art mumbo jumbo it's really good interviews from real artists like they're real artists and so they ask good artist questions i'm afraid i'm gonna run out of episodes soon oh guys i mean what i just throw this up here and then from for like working out and then it stays there if it's not hurting or pulling it stays some days looks better than others today not one of those days um [Music] is thought i would pick you guys up and show you what i'm doing i'm painting the entire thing with just a big this is pretty big brush it's very very cheap from just a hardware store and you have no control over the bristles they do whatever they want but you get these nice edges which i love you can see how just scratchy it is you have to be comfortable with the process to be able to use something like this you can already see how i'm moving things around that vase is in the back but i just decided that i wanted it here and then what happens though when i move something is then i gotta figure everything else out so that's what i'm doing but i'm having a lot of fun i just have two brushes i'm basically also not rinsing these i don't think i've rinsed either one of these very often well per usual i got into it i did do some clips for instagram stories oops [Music] this is the finished painting i think i liked it better before i added this background but i was in a place where i thought i wonder what that would look like to have some pop of blue back there actually i'm kind of wondering now i wonder if i should make it darker maybe that's what i'm not loving about it whenever i should do that probably not i'll probably just move on i've worked on this for a little while now and it was super fun i think i'm going to go do something else there's that okay i love this little peep of the cherry jar that's over there it needed something right there and i thought that would be fun there's that and i used this pretty large large and unruly brush the entire time one things i did find out though when it's loaded with paint you can kind of just take a little bit like this squish it together and that's how i did some of these little dots parts of the innards of the flower and then things like this too you can always just kind of squish it together and do that now these little tendril things i did use what did i use this paintbrush this is like a what is this i can't even read it's got paint on it it's a synthetic brush i did not care for it i could have gotten these marks with something else in fact i tore the palette using it there and this there's a big hole right there too but other than that let's see is that true well i did use this paintbrush right here this chinese calligraphy thing put the date i do have a couple other brushes in here though okay i did i started using this one which is another very unruly like this thing is for kids and it's really cheap and it's got terrible bristles but i love that i started using that for some reason on the background and then i picked up the big one but sometimes i'll use little ones for big areas and use a bigger brush for smaller areas i don't know why i do that but i do like that effect so there it is it's not my favorite sketch but it was fun and there's things about it i like i am wondering now though let's block that off leave it or not leave it i'm gonna just leave it move on but i do think i'm not i think it would be better if it had like a darker background like that we'll see okay so i decided since i finished that sketch i wanted to do another one the sun was out and now it's not this is how i used to paint all the time i would just set a table up out there because i wanted to paint shadow and light and i haven't done that for a while and it's pretty day out and the wind's not blowing that's one of the issues with painting like that all the elements have to be right it can't be too hot because stuff will like melt or get condensating or too cold because things will freeze it can't be too windy you have to have the sun so that's why i started kind of moving in a different direction with so i have paint this time i may try to paint where things actually are so this other one i've played around with i'm gonna do that try to squeeze everything in maybe the sun will come out and i can paint shadow and light and if it doesn't that's okay okay the sun came out very quickly actually i kind of wish i i like that shape and the sh table there that would be fun to paint about a chair back there anyway so that's not what i'm painting and painting the table top so what i did i marked the shadows and i looked at the shapes a little bit just kind of quickly marked the shadows there if i was going to paint this sun and shade the way that i used to i would knock everything in really quickly that was in the shade and get those try to get those values correctly i'd be squinting i would not try to think about oh that's a pear and what color that would be just a darker green i try to actually look at the colors because like right now that pink is bouncing up into that pear and so there's a lot of pink and sometimes what you can do too is to make a little hole like this and zoom in on what that color would be that's how i used to paint so we'll see what i do the other thing i'm not worried anymore about if i get some things where it's light and shadow and other things not i found that it just doesn't matter i can mix it all up so that's what i'm going to do i probably will blop in really quickly some background cause i'm thinking about doing the background of green because that's what this is and maybe painting the table the color that it is i just haven't decided but i'm going to get some big masses in and that's how i'm going to start i'm still listening to artwork i also forgot to mention this i have y'all set up now look at this i used this calligraphy what did we decide these are called this is a princeton two it's like a calligraphy brush and i just used it with a really bright color to sketch i like to do that a lot because then the little bits of bright pink will shine through all the way around and make it kind of cohesive and i like that double speed he said i could speed him up so the lecture is you know he said one of my lectures got a really slow voice and i was thinking wow but we were just i'm curious about that that trip um and how you went i want to be done with this painting i do not enjoy painting like this anymore i'm painting shadow and light yeah i just don't enjoy it anymore and i really don't even want to finish this sketch maybe what i'll do i've painted i don't know what two-thirds i don't know i painted a good bit of it starting to carve with light shadow then i had to go get a bunch of my fruit that i was like oh yeah we're supposed to eat that for like dinner and breakfast and it's been out there roasting in the sun um but now i see why i moved on from this type of painting i'm just not enjoying it it also takes a long time i mean i'm doing a sketch and yeah i i don't know i'm not completing a sentence am i sorry about that i just don't enjoy this i really want to stop i i think that probably i get done with it would be beautiful and something sellable and people really liked what i painted like this but i just don't enjoy it and i just it's really what has guided the way i paint i want to follow my instinct of how i'm enjoying laying down paint i don't want to go back to this way i just don't i really don't even finish the sketch what to do can i fix it all right here's where i am so far and it's fine i'm just not enjoying i may even just lose all the shadow and light and just right i think i'm going to just take my big paint brush i've decided i cannot i just cannot carry on with this so i'm going to lose all of it i mean there are things i kind of like definitely don't like this i don't know i'm just going to maybe i'll leave that one aluminum like that just as a you know like this is what it we was choose and so which you are going into the visual arts and wanting to have a career and you know i hate to work career but yeah you know fine and it's never going to be the ground state is okay sorry about the noise in the background grady is making homemade ice cream all right i'm gonna stop for now it's not in a good place you're probably i know that i'm just gonna acknowledge that some of you guys are cringing that i got rid of all that and i get that but i'm hopefully i'll win you over by the end maybe not with this sketch but maybe with another did you hear that bell that means something's ready with the ice cream but this will be nice to have this to come back to tomorrow so i'm just going to pause i definitely see issues i'm going to go bring the table in get ready to help me bring the table and see that great shadow right there i mean those are the kinds of things that do miss painting i like that i'm very sorry if you're like i can't believe she got rid of that that's how it goes around here put it in take it out right now i'm gonna go bring the table yeah so i wanted to tell you i'm using today to finish the sketch up just i think this thing is called an art color this was literally in a pack of a whole bunch of paint brushes that i think was in like the kids section at the art store super cheap the bristles fall out i really like it i like just really cheap brushes a lot of times i'm also not rinsing my brush out very often so i mix this kind of reddish color now i'm going to go to the green and just now add more yellow and blue and then that way i've got more of a neutral because i've already got this brush loaded that way it also helps the brush to stay nice and loaded at this point i'm just really wanting to wrap this sketch up i'm over it i'm done with it i may do a little more to the flowers up top but i think i'm just like wanna finish it and this is nice because it's the beginning of the day it's getting me warmed up and then i can move on to other things [Music] okay i think i'm going to be done with it i did have fun i just kind of kept chipping away at some things but i think i do want to stop what is nice though is you do have to remember with a sketch go on and just take things to levels that you may think oh what if i do this what if i do that because this is the place to play and then this is also the place to like learn just how things work or if you're like hmm what if i blah blah blah go on and just try it because it's just paint it's just paper it's just your sketchbook yeah i'm happier with it than when i started or like when i opened it up today it was like just the little bit that i did i feel like really made a difference this one has a lot of sheen to it i don't know why but it does it's probably because sometimes i add more matte medium than others but i noticed that it was sticking together i am going to spray this one with this fixative i'll put probably like three or four layers it will probably still stick together some but not ridiculous this will take the edge off the sheen and make it like just make a really big difference in the way that they stick or not don't stick all right guys we are back to this painting and we have a different studio we're in the dining room i've taken over the dining room i've been painting in here a ton lately and making use of this nice big long red table i have been playing a lot with this background i'm getting close i think i definitely like it blue before i just had it blue in these kind of not as prominent stripes and then i added those i'm not sold yet i know this guy right here is standing out like that stripe he's way too bright there's part of me that wants to add some more to it but i really don't want the background to be competing with the foreground so i'm gonna chunk away at that a little bit this morning i'm really happy with the whole rest of the painting it's going really well but i do need to get this background resolved it's like this one stripe just wants to be the show just does not want to go in the background at all don't understand that i've also been thinking about adding like a a yellowish like a this kind of color stripe in the middle here or maybe here i think here i guess that is not going to work it's going to bring it forward more than i want again i don't want it to come forward too much i'm going to try it it's just paint always wipe it away paint over it so i'm not going to be worried about it i'm just going gonna try it it's really easy at this stage to get nervous about things okay the lighting in here is weird right now it's a little earlier than what i usually come into the dining room to paint and it's like glare city so i've been taking this to the dining room putting it up on the wall and i don't know that you're going to be able to tell because it's so stinking bright in here but this orange is way too popping so i'm going to knock it back a little but i think i'm on the right track i brought this outside to show you guys because i thought maybe it would show up better what i ended up doing was a wash of a just a lot of the medium that i used the matte medium and the ultramarine and i went over it just kind of sloppy actually and it created enough texture that i'm really really happy with it so i'm gonna just leave it like this because i'm thrilled with it yeah it's really interesting and i hope it's showing up on camera because uh i'm definitely gonna be doing that some more really nice technique i am over the moon with this leak it just turned out so fun it's probably my favorite part of the whole painting what do you think guys i've got it up on my website i also have it up on my wall because i love it it looks so good with some other paintings i've been doing recently that i haven't showed you guys yet if the light gets decent enough i'll show it to you guys in my den coop's over here looking all defeated let's see if this lighting will show this one of things i love about painting over paintings is the edges i will leave the original painting let me go take this into the studio and show y'all okay i'm in the studio now so it's better light these are the sides i think that's from what was that from was that from the lion those dots and stuff i don't remember and then look at the bottom all those colors marks and let's see what this side looks like yeah just really really fun all right so there we are the finished painting ta-da okay can we mark this down in history because it's been a while like since i've showed you i finished painting but there she is it's done yay for all of us all right guys that is it for this week i will see you guys back here next week go and have fun and play and just remember it's just paint and you can paint over it you
