Structural Repair in Crawl Spaces - Big Picture - BAY Crawl Space & Foundation Repair

hi thank you for joining me my name is Blake with Bay crawlspace and foundation repair based out of Virginia Beach Virginia and I am going to break down structural repair in crawl spaces simple enough for anyone to understand so allow me to make structural repair very simple for you just like everything else homes are supported from the bottom to the top okay everything starts with the foundation for homes with a crow crawlspace the foundation includes both the continuous perimeter that supports the outside walls of the home but also includes the individual footings that support the piers which carry the floor loads okay the footings are designed to support the home with minimal movement in other words the foundation is not supposed to move so if you want to diagnose your home structurally first thing we want to do is to look for cracks or unevenness in floors okay so here's the first rule of thumb and structural repair cracking and uneven floors tell us that there has been movement it wasn't like that when the house was built now that we know there's been movement and we don't want movement we need to find out well what has moved okay it's important to accurately diagnose what is moved was it the foundation failing was it up here settling have the beams started bowing are the would members compressing under the weight of the home have the floor joists started sagging no is the wood rotting or where they're just where the supports just installed in the wrong place when the house was built that happens with an accurate structural drawing you can begin to understand how the house is constructed and how the different areas of your house are being supported the drawing is critical for a good diagnosis once you have a good drawing it's not hard to understand where the problems are coming from sometimes there are multiple factors actually that come into play and we may need multiple solutions make sense anyways second rule of thumb in structural repair is that if something is moving then it doesn't have enough support and if it doesn't have enough support it needs more support simple enough right there are only so many options good options for adding support and each option that that we offer at least addresses an individual source of the problem so if the foundation is settling we should go ahead and install a foundation support like a push pier the uses of the resistance though the weight of the home and the resistance of the earth to support the home or we can get correction right if the joists are sagging maybe due to over spanning we recommend additional floor supports that's what these are right with a new supplemental beam so this is actually what we have installed here you're looking at a titan adjustable crawl jack that has a floating underneath you can't see that but it's designed to stabilize the structure and also give the best opportunity for correction and lift with the adjustable feature all right if a pier is settling or a beam is bowing we also use the titan crawljax to stabilize the existing beam and its impression now let's say a beam is rotten it may need to be replaced if it's impossible to replace it may need some other alternative if a joist is damaged due to moisture it may need to be cistern for those of you who haven't heard of a joist or new to that term basically where we just installed identical size joists next to the damaged joist to repair the strength of that joist right so plates can also be damaged by moisture and if that happens they should be replaced if possible and finally the subfloor can be supported from underneath so we can repair it from underneath with a process called subfloor plating it's not a permanent 100% fix all but if it neat doesn't if you don't want to replace it from above and that would be in basis subfloor plating is a great option all right so this is just a brief overview of crawl space repair and crawl spaces you know to give you an idea of the big picture obviously we could go much more in depth on every one of the subjects covered here but I hope this gives you a well-rounded big picture all right our company baked crawl space offers free inspections from highly trained inspectors so if you live in a 50-mile radius in any direction from our Virginia Beach location please feel free to give us a call if you have any concerns about your crawlspace foundation basement and we'll take great care of you all right our contact information is below in the description also if you have any questions or comments feel free to ask below in the comment section and we'll keep the conversation going alright thank you for joining I hope this has been helpful and have a great day [Music] you
