hey what's going on today guys so um I get a ton of questions about dropping just because I talk about it so much and hell everyone who owns a knife should at least own a strop there's really no way to damage your knife with a strop and you can keep your knives sharp for so long with this drop I think people tend to over sharpen their knives and when really they could just take it to a strop I've dropped my delica back along with my Amerson right around 12 to 13 times it's somewhere between like 10 to 14 times without ever having to sharpen it and each time I strop it back he can still shave arm hair so um dropping is great so I'm actually gonna refinish this drop as you can see there's some gouging in here I want to take this green chromium oxide off and I'm gonna show you guys how to do that so I think I'm actually gonna take this off try to refinish it and put diamond compound on here so I'm gonna do a whole series on she drops this is olive oil you take the olive oil I use spray you can use any kind of obviously this stuff just cheap and easy to use so it's very little olive oil in there I use a paper towel because it's gonna make a mess and then watch as you can it's even good if you just spread it on there and then you just let it sit for a little bit so if you let it sit and as you can see it's already coming off but without olive oil or some kind of oil like this I recommend olive oil trying to take this off is basically impossible okay so now we just start wiping this may take a fair amount as you can see there's a fair amount of paste on here okay so we need more you really want to get it in there and you want to keep basically just keep it wet I mean you don't got obviously you don't have to go nuts with it just use it as needed and there you go we're starting to be able to see leather already as you can see this stuff works pretty quick I might switch another paper towel out this one's getting dumped up and probably just gonna start spreading it back on and we'll work it a little bit more okay so I that's sitting on there I'm just gonna grab another paper towel there we go look at that fresh paper sale look at that nice beautiful leather and force drops I do recommend the smooth side at least for pocket knives the smooth side up I do have a couple with the rough side like it's more like the I don't know maybe you could call it the NAP side that I don't really recommend for pocket knives it generally has a little bit more give it does work fine it 100% it works fine and some people actually prefer it because you can use light pressure and it's in this like the nappy part hits the actual apex me personally though I prefer a little bit more of a hard strap a hard strop generally speaking actually really do like kangaroo leather but this was pretty expensive this should do it right here I'm gonna let all that soak in again let that sit and I'll switch out the paper towel one more time and then I should pretty much do it this running on paper towels here sure continue yeah we're still falling a fair amount off I'm actually gonna be sanding this guy down if I didn't say it though I'm so I'm gonna take some fine sandpaper to this guy to refinish it I'm just trying to get as much off as possible so I'm not clogging up the sandpaper and this should be pretty good right here I like that you can see that deep gouge in there not a big deal strops are pretty cheap I wouldn't I wouldn't recommend you know going crazy with the strop unless you really want to you know obviously you can you can get a nice nice strop that's on a nice piece of wood may I don't overdo it with dropping you know I just want something effective that's not I'm not into you know woods and real nice drop but you know if you are that's fine I just need something that's effective - uh nope just reduce the burn increase sharpness a little bit okay I actually do nowadays I actually do prefer leather shops over wood okay so I'm gonna start with 2,000 grit sandpaper right here as you could see 2,000 grit sandpaper this is what I'm using right here and we're just gonna stand this guy I wish I had even higher than two I think two is the highest I have right now though so 2,000 grit it is now what this will do this will get out any light damage out of your straw I mean you can see how big these pieces are I don't plan on getting all that out I could if I really wanted to go for sir and then really remove it but you know I'm fine with this yeah a little bit and then after this I'm gonna well load it up and then since I had so many people asking me about how to how to strop and the big one is how to find the right angle I actually came up with a pretty cool way of uh to help people find the angle because they said they can't feel it they don't know what the feeling is supposed to be when they're actually at the proper angle so I thought about it for a little while and I did come up with something pretty cool she'll show you as soon as we're done this and we get this guy loaded up I'm actually going to uh I'll stop this here oh that feels very smooth that's me feel smoother than before all right so I'm gonna end this here and then I'll see you guys know as you could see this drop is changing color you can actually see some leather here that I am taking off the actual straw but I did decide that I would like to get out a little bit more of this damage so I'm actually gonna drop down to 320 and I just wanted to show you guys this for a little bit so 320 is really gonna rough this guy up as you could sing now begin guys all I'm doing here is I'm just refinishing this drop this is gonna not only refinish it this is also going you know it's gonna refinish it so it's gonna take out the damage then it's going to also since I'm changing the compound that's gonna get rid of that compound except for right in there but again not a big deal to make so I might show you guys this for another minute and then like I said I'll show you guys the best way that I found to uh so everyone out with not being able to find the proper angle when dropping you guys guys dropping is so important it really is I know you guys see a lot of people that are just always resharpen their knives but it's completely it's it's not necessary it's really not dropping is definitely the way to go if you're just a regular person who's not crazy in the sharpening dropping makes the most gun look at that it's like it's looking like a fresh piece of leather alright so there you go guys as you can see we're making progress I'm gonna stop you guys here though and then I'll see you guys in a second after I'm done the 320 and then I'll show you where what it looks like and then I'll progress so that is the end of the 320 grit as you can see we are looking much better that's about as much lower and you can see basically that's all the leather that I removed so that was the bad damaged leather that is now gone okay and in that dark spot you see is I just sprayed it with a little bit more olive oil just because I wanted to see if anymore the green chromium oxide came off which none did which means that I will not be contaminating so the next one that I'm gonna move on to on I wish I had a grit that was in between that but I really don't the next one I have is a thousand so I'm gonna jump right to the 1k and I'll start this and then same thing I'll bring you guys back in a little bit but this drop looks much nicer as you can see this does not take long and now guys this is unnecessary you obviously you can just buy a new shop it's not like they're expensive but quite honestly I just don't feel like buying a strop when I have this perfectly good one right here so like I said it's not like just a lot of work I think so far it took me about five minutes of sanding and quite honestly just feel right there that feels magnificent I mean there's I need a brush at all but that feeling right there that's fine the strop one right now look we can continue to make it better so I'm just gonna bring this whole thing down to a 1,000 grit and then from there just like how you progressed in sharpening then I bring it up to a 2,000 grit and then from the 2,000 grit I know it'll be fine I think I said this 1,000 feels very nice already as you can see I'm really not removing too much more material I couldn't get that out and as you that mark is definitely lower than it was but there's no point in me trying to remove that much taro to get that out Matt it's not gonna bother me because I strop here and I'll just go right over that it's not like my tip or anything is gonna get stuck in that so that is not a concern for me I'll do this for another second or two and then you guys this is just something you guys can do if you guys have you know old beat-up strop set you know your tips dug into or anything like that or if you're just getting into a straw and you want to know how to refinish this drop this is it like I said I'm gonna do a whole series on this before you guys cuz there's a lot of questions about it and like I said being able to strop your knife it's huge so a sharpening but being able to strop is just incredible like I said there's no risk of damaging anything with a strop so there you go I'm gonna hit it with one more piece off of that feels so that feels softer than before already so I'm gonna hit that with one more piece and we're gonna have a beautiful strap here so this is what we're looking like after the 1k and guys this thing is so smooth it is unbelievably smooth I still like little piece of the leather on here that I just need to wipe off with the actual leather there I mean that that's smoother than Factory definitely at least for this one anyway okay so now I'm gonna move up to the 2k and grab a club piece of that so this is mm again here you go that's what it is so 2k this and this is gonna really bump up this myth in this you can sit you can you guys see like the little changing color just from the you know it's instantly changing it so it's instantly smoothing it out this one I'm gonna do very light pressure for and I'm the type of person who changes sandpaper you know change its areas relatively quickly just because you know I don't feel like wasting my time the sandpaper cheap so my time is more important to me so I switch sides relatively quickly gently pressure and I'm just you know way pressure moving fast as you could see I'm barely taking any material off here at all anymore so I did I use you that I think right here got a brush that also I can get a feel of the leather oh wow oh God that's some of the softest leather I've ever felt that feels incredible okay so that's mm so far and then I'm gonna hit this with another piece I'm gonna finish using this piece right on here and then we'll get this compound loaded up and we'll start so there you go I'm all finished with the 2k I don't know if the smoothness will actually show but can you guys see how its glinting this thing is so smooth and all I did after that is I just brushed it off to get all the loose leather off as you can see and that's all the leather that we took off okay so that was all the old old beat-up leather so now we have nice fresh leather and if it wasn't for if I went a little bit longer on the course of the grits right in these two areas and that wasn't there as you can see it would look like this which would just be a brand new strop but like I said this was just quick thing this took me it's definitely under 15 minutes and I have a nice functioning strop again just a little like little piece of legend up I wiped this guy off I actually use my hands to like actually generate heat like what people do with straight razors just to get any of that like loose leather pull it up generate eats it just helps move everything else maybe a little bit of a burnishing effect and then now this thing is just can you guys see how smooth I hope you guys can actually see how smooth this thing is it's unreal yeah what's up guys so it's actually five six nineteen I shoved this video a video about a week ago to be honest with you I kind of forgot about it but I actually decided I'm gonna leave out the part about me putting on the diamond compound I feel like I don't have to waste your guy's time showing you guys how to put diamond compound on here if it's in the tube you just take it you know spread it and spread it out if you want to you can wear gloves and you know put it in a bag afterwards if you guys are looking to go back to green chromium oxide you can use this guy right here this is petroleum jelly two options here you take the petroleum jelly and you go like this and then you wipe it on the strop and then you take your green chromium oxide and then on the strap that'll give you a nice even consistent coating of green chromium oxide before petroleum jelly we used to hold the shop over the stove or try to hold the wax over the stove and then smear it on there this actually the petroleum jelly actually works better than the stove and you don't have to use a freaking stove so yeah petroleum jelly it's it's what you use actually shout out to a triple B big brown bear for he was the first one I heard this wrong so yeah and stuff works great for that's only use this for green chromium oxide again if you're using diamond paste spray spray it on good to go okay now with this guy like I said I took this guy up to 2,000 grit as you can see we are actually kind of reflective on here some of that is the compound but this leather is very smooth I'm hoping you guys can see that I did drop on this guy a couple times ready - it worked great so like I said this is actually pretty smooth like I said I never went real crazy with dropping but I would say that this is at least middle-of-the-road smoothness probably higher this is a very smooth drought now like I said I only took this guy to 2,000 grit obviously you guys can take this further than I did you can take it to you know whatever you want you want to take it to 3000 grit you don't take the 5 you want to take to whatever double zero you can do whatever you want so this moon that's really just depends on what you're doing now there would be an argument to be made for keeping everything consistent so maybe if again it just depends on what you guys want to do if you want to go crazy kind of clamp this guy down hold this down somehow and then you could get kind of a plate with sandpaper on there and then rub it like this which would keep everything completely flat you know I mean sandpaper on a plate plate on the strop go like this keep everything flat again that's if you want to kind of go crazy with it I just use my hand real quick scrubbed it down just because out then it is I don't in my personal experience I don't think it's gonna make a difference that's just something you can do like I said if you're really anal about everything being completely level so there you go guys that's how I refinish my straps if you guys ever refinish the strop let me know how you guys do it down below but that's it and I'll catch you all next one guys say
