it's like I'm giving you a Novation every time you start a video Tim you're welcome like a alligator everything's perfect now let's get to this we're gonna break out the full song of message in a bottle by the police [Applause] [Music] obviously Stewart Copeland is on the drums this is about 152 BPM so it's moving pretty quick and he builds this drum groove throughout this song and build some variations on it and I'll tell you something was Stewart it's not that he does these things that are just you know mind-blowing it's just that it's there's some very simple things he does or leaves out and omits that make this a really great drum part now with the police stuff there's a lot of overdubs there's also a lot of studio tricks and their stuff so a lot of reverb and echo on high hats and things like that so you may hear some different things in the recording then I'm talking about like for instance in the beginning when we settled on the first verse there's an accent on the ride cymbal bell with every snare drum if you want to try to do that you can do that but it's very obvious it's an overdub in the studio that they're hitting that ride cymbal bell with every snare drum so just kind of know that there was some studio stuff done there let's go ahead and check out Oh as well if you want the full sheet music that's in the video description there's download link for that please feel free it's free as well I'm gonna pin a comment in the comments and if you haven't subscribe to the channel I don't know what you're doing you know no let's do it here with you with your life you need to do that because you you're killing me you're killing me smalls let's check out the intro here at the intro we're gonna be on the high hats and this is what I would call a reverse boom chick so it's gonna be snare kick snare kick eighth notes on the hi-hat so it's gonna go one and two and three and four and now every now and then he'll raise the hi-hat on the upbeat he doesn't in measure one on the upbeat of four he does it in measure three on the upbeat of two all right that's the intro that's the first three measures and then he has a drum fill it's gonna continue that snare kick so one and two and a three and and then we have crash cymbal with the snare drum which is a very staple thing our signature thing that's that stewart copeland does he intersperses a lot of reggae roots style drumming with rock drumming he was one of the first to bring those up over as well as the drummer for The Clash was he was bringing over at that time as well and so very reggae inspired with this so the small things that he does and that's kind of a Copeland ISM that's crashing on four or the end of four and then leaving one empty although and the first would this first he doesn't leave one empty he crashes on that too so that drum pill is gonna go except this is moving right it's about over 150 BPM so we're going fast now going into the verse he crashes on the one but notice after that he leaves the kick drum out of the one every time okay and he does a variation of this groove so it's eighth notes on the hi-hat two and four on the snare and you're gonna play and of two and the downbeat of three on the kick drum so one and [Music] so very much like the one-drop he leaves out the one of that groove all right so we need to be sure we do that now he's also raising the hi-hats sometimes he races the hi-hat on four and and sometimes he only raises the hi-hat on the end of four so I'll kind of play through that and let you hear what that sounds like [Music] now we're gonna see that Copeland ISM that I just talked about he's gonna he's it's gonna crop back up if you look in the eighth measure of that line or of that verse you're gonna see that he crashes on four and then it's the up beat of a hi-hat so okay so omitting one is really really important whenever you're playing through this song in the sections that he does omit one going into the chorus he starts the chorus off on the high hat and he switches in the middle which is an odd thing he switches four bars into it that's an odd thing to do in a pop song but it works for whatever reason with this so we come into the chorus and he's playing on the kick drum one and two and three and four and one and two so all that all the eighth notes are being played he's playing eighth notes here on the hi-hat and then two and four on the snare drum [Music] all right then at the fourth measure we have a drum fill it's going to go one and two and then lifting the hi-hat on the and of two the downbeat of three and then we're gonna play three E and four E and then he's gonna move to the ride cymbal after he plays that drum fill and on the ride cymbal he's playing on the bell of the ride cymbal Copeland likes the bell of the ride cymbal and he's going to play quarter notes okay same kick drum pattern same snare drum pattern but what he's going to be doing is placing a Tom sometimes he does the second time sometimes he does the first Tom but if the Tom is gonna go and three [Music] so it plays that all three different ways throughout this song sometimes on the high time sometimes a second times sometimes going from the high to the second time just depends on which part of the song it is now there's a drum fill coming out of this and what we're gonna do is he plays this drum fills several times so we're gonna play one and two with the hot with the rights of a bell so one and two and on the upbeat of two he placed three sextuplets and then crashes on four right he doesn't crash home one he leaves one empty [Music] so going into that turn around he's going to be plenty he's gonna leave one empty so he crashes on four leaves one empty and then he's gonna be walking the kick drum on all four quarter notes so one two three four sometimes he'll lift the hi-hat on the upbeats sometimes he'll play and uh sometimes he'll play to e hand off its gonna go run too then we have two bars before the second verse we're gonna have a tom fill that he kind of revisits during the song so playing the hi-hat one and two and three and the and of four is on the high Tom and of two of the next measure is on the middle tom and a four is on the floor Tom and then he waits to crash until two so he keeps walking that kick drum let's play that very slowly one two one two [Music] alright now he changes the groove when he goes back to a verse usually you go back to the same groove right he changes this groove up and what he does is he settles I'll give you the group that he settles into it's a four bar loop going around the Tom's first measure of that four bar loop is the and and the at the end of two and the downbeat of three are on the second tom the second measure the and of two and the downbeat of three on the high Tom third measure we're back to the second time and then the fourth measure we go to the floor Tom walking the kick drum on all four eighth notes on the high hat so very slowly one two [Music] one two three four so coming out of that turn around one two three four verse two we go back into the chorus then we're gonna come out of the chorus back into the turnaround and when we come to the turnaround he starts adding some rim click to what he's doing so if you check out obviously I told you the full transcription for this song is in the video description go download that so you can follow along or also in the comments section there's a link there it's free no strings attached so that just did that so you can you know have a visual what am I trying to say so you can see visually what he was doing there we go look and measure 6 he starts adding some cross stick type stuff and I'll show you one lick that he uses over and over as well as it is found in a lot of reggae drumming or if you're into punk rock drumming are the first third second wave of ska it's it's used in that so you look at measure six he's still walking the kick drum one two three four eighth notes here but he plays and of every beat here on the rim click [Music] and then going into that seventh measure he placed the upbeat of two on the rim click and then he's gonna play the downbeat of three now this is what starts a lick that he'll do over and over and you'll see over and over and a lot of their music as well as reggae music and other it's it's this dotted eighth note rhythm so it's kind of a 3 E and a 4 and alright then he'll have a crash on four with the snare drum and he kind of continues through that back into verse three in verse three you'll see him bring the backbeat back on two and four and he gets busier on the hi-hat so there's a couple of variations that he does on the hi-hat and he also starts up doing another Copland ISM that we'll call it that he starts hitting on the end of three in the downbeat of four with the snare drum or the downbeat of two and the upbeat of two with a crash cymbal with that okay he's usually putting a crash cymbal with one of those or splash them on don't have any splash cymbals but he's usually doing that so for instance in the first measure he's playing [Music] okay so he gets a lot busier with his patterns whenever he's doing that there's a lot of variations in that but if you skip down to the third line and you're looking there that second measure of the third line that's gonna be the eighth ninth tenth measure of that last verse you're gonna see on the end of three that he crashes okay so it's gonna go you'll see that again in two measures later and then the next line you'll see him crash on the end of two so we'll be going so a lot of crashing on the upbeats and crashing on the downbeats with the snare drum that's very much a reggae carryover from reggae roots type of style drumming where they're hitting with the snare drum instead of hitting with a traditional kick drum like we would in western music then we head into that last turnaround where he brings it down and when he brings it down he does a lot more rim click work so he's kind of built it at this point and you remember that rhythm that I showed you that three three beats but it's it's dotted eighth to note so so if you want to begin to begin use this let me kind of give you an exercise for that start it on all the down beats and all the up beats so that rhythm started on the downbeat of one one two now start on the upbeat of two the downbeat of two [Music] the upbeat of to the downbeat of three upbeat of three so forth and so on then you can mix those one two three so if you start mixing those rhythms around and starting that on all different parts of that beat you'll start to sound in the vein of what he's doing there and then very quickly the outro he takes it to a half-time groove eighth notes on the hi-hat for uh quarter notes on the kick drum and then he's hitting an accent on the snare drum on beat three which makes it in halftime so one two three [Music] and then he kicks back into the regular group having the snare on - and for incorporating accenting on the upbeats afore at times up beats of - crashing with that so it goes from this one to [Music] okay goes into a couple of drum fills goes to the ride cymbal but that's essentially the outro for that song so I wanted to cover all of the main parts let you see how he builds that groove and this is a very good example of a pop song that doesn't have a standard drum form it because every time he comes back to a verse he's he's differing that groove and building it in a different way and it's just a really ingenious way to build apart as well as the little things avoiding one in certain places accenting the up beats the types of fills that he does the rim click items that he does that are all signature Copland isms and that you should pay attention to those are things that I kind of put over in a file and go okay whenever I'm playing a Copeland's you know a police song that would be acceptable this would be acceptable and I have several things that I go to so that when the listener is listening I don't have to cop the drum the complete drum chart exactly but they understand that like oh he's playing that drummer and the song in the style of that's what we want to do so if this has helped you click that thumbs up button share it with somebody that you think it may help as well leave me a comment I love hearing from you
