struggle in mini camp I want to talk with Mark because a lot of people are pointing to something that he said that kind of started this rumor and I want to address that where Justin Fields stands we'll have clips of Justin Fields as well as talk about Russell Wilson all here in the locked on Steelers podcast let's get into it you are locked on Steelers your daily Pittsburgh Steelers podcast the man himself Mark caboi out of the athletic he covers the Steelers he's been covering the Steelers for decades he knows his way around the team Mark you found yourself in a Twitter pickle this week because people found your winners and lo losers article that talked about um that talked about Justin fields and you had Justin Fields listed in your losers Co column um and your your article and I I'm G to quote it here before we get into this he said quote don't get been out of shape with Fields finding himself on this list his talent speaks for itself but unlike Wilson he has a lot of obstacles to overcome for an opportunity this year Fields didn't get many first team RS that's significant for training camp more than that you can see what made him a first round pick his talent you talked about his arm strength and his playmaking ability however he showed inconsistent accuracy and relied on his feet too quickly after his first read That's stuff can be youed to even say quote that stuff can be fixed but maybe not through not throughout a first training camp Mark that got spun into Mark caboi says Justin Fields is struggling in training camp and everyone thinks that you hate Justin Fields now I want to give you a chance to clear the air here yeah I mean come on you read it perfectly you know what I really appreciate that Chris because you actually read it I mean the only thing I only thing I've been saying about Justin Fiers too think it's gonna be very difficult for him to unseat Russell Wilson just because of Russell Wilson being the vet the first choice so to speak of the Steelers a very limited time the history of Mike Tomlin not really having quarterback battles within the preseason at all he might view it as that and number two is I said his arm his accuracy has been inconsistent I didn't say terrible I said inconsistent every times that he would throw a rocket ball you'd be like wow this guy is unbelievable and a couple plays later You' be like oh my where did that what was that intended for so I mean you saw it too I mean I'm not the only one that sees this type of stuff that's all I mentioned he was inconsistent with his accuracy a little bit I would never say the word struggle when it turns to OTAs or mini camp that's stuff you're just trying to learn and just trying to get some reps right there the stuff that you that is tangible where you can see was the inaccuracy at times once again this doesn't mean he's not going to be the quarterback of the future he could be a guy that they turn to next year and be a star I think he needs a little work needs some mechanics fixed and needs uh to get that accuracy uh pretty much died in that's all I'm saying so I don't know how I got I know how I got Twisted I mean it's aggregators man aggregator no it's not even that it's in Chicago are saying H see I told you he stinks type of stuff so that starts it a little bit no I mean Justin Fields he's a little bit of a work in progress but we all know that coming in exactly the only thing I could tell you like I said you can probably back me and I'm not put words in your mouth the throws were sometimes great and sometimes iffy that's all I was saying and here's the other thing is like like you said that's what we knew about Justin Fields coming to Pittsburgh was that his time with Chicago he didn't have a chance to really established himself find any level of consistency they never got him a real offensive line they barely got him some weapons the the team was up and down all the time so Justin Fields is coming from a place where he wasn't able to rely on a whole lot and so yeah his some of his mechanics need work yeah he needs to you learn how to be part of a successful team with a with a structured culture and an organization that's better than what the Bears gave him and that's why they got Russell Wilson first and then Justin Fields once Kenny pick was traded away because it's like hey you know what we want you to develop that's why he's not in the the first Pole Position uh right right now and Russell Wilson he's a nine-time pro bowler he's a Super Bowl champion he's a guy who's LED multiple offenses last year he just threw 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions you put that raaco on the Steelers in any of the last three years and fans are probably throwing parades right now so I I just I look at this and I think that like like you said the reason I wanted to bring you on and talk about this right away was because I saw how this was getting spun as it to mark he doesn't like Justin fields and I'm like that's not what Mark said and so I I think it's important that we that as we try to do on this show we try to stick to the facts and not spin narratives that just spin wildly out of control and create these these hate spaces uh in the NFL you know what to tell you I mean there's a lot of talk it's mostly nationally about who's going to start is there going to be a competition for me it's not a bad thing for Justin Phils to sit and wait and and learn and be ready for next year if he's ready for next year I know the contract has get worked out and all that type of situation but you got a young talented guy if you get a couple of things worked out him learning learning the system uh learning how like you said to play in an organization like this and you can go to him next year that's great I I still think that's a very good possibility of happening I would probably say there might be a better chance of Russell Wilson leaving after the year and Justin Fields being that guy rather than vice versa but hey Russell Wilson is going to start I mean come on we know this already he's going to start and if he does what he did last year the 26 touchdowns the handful of interceptions compared to what they got out of that quarterback play last year this could be a 12- win team I mean he just can't he just can't screw up and he's not going to I mean in training camp there's just a short amount of time what we talking 16 practices you really think that they're going to give Russell Russell Wilson going to be that bad in a 15 span or three week space to be able to let somebody else take this job no way use your head a little bit but that's not a knock on Justin Fields Justin Fields learns they could come to him September 8th and say Justin we want you to sign a two-year deal and you're going to be our quarterback in the future and I would not be shocked that that's where I think that this makes the most amount of sense here we're talking about a guy like and Russell Wilson who by the way in his best years with the Seahawks when he was dangerous and he was he was making all the plays and he was developing you know his his profile he played in an offense much like what the Steelers want to do this year that ran the football and played great defense you think back to Marshon Lynch and beast mode and the Beast quake and all the things he did that's what the Steelers want to do with jayen Warr and Naji Harris they want to have an offensive line that dominates the line of scrimmage you think of the the the legion of boom that's what the Steelers want to be granted they'll be different they don't have like a real Joy Porter they hope develop into a Richard Sherman to like player but that Seahawks defense don't got a edge rusher that's like T that's like TJ Watt and they're stacked at linebacker heck uh um we we just showed a clip yesterday on yesterday's show of Aaron Curry this the Steelers linebackers coach talking about in comparing this linebacker group to that linebacker group with Bobby Wagner and KJ Wright so if anything I I think it makes a lot of sense for Russell Wilson to be the guy that that has the poll position that gets the chance to start this year and then Justin Fields can say hey that's the kind the way that we need to conduct this offense because that's not the style of offense they wanted him to play in Chicago I mean for for a guy like Russell Wilson it's not going to take much right it's going to be hit some of the throws that Kenny picket missed last year and you can go on YouTube or whatever and see a handful of throws you're like wow Kenny if you just would have hit that throw the game would have been different those type of throws I think Russell Wilson can make is he GNA be perfect no of course not but I don't think he has be perfect I think he needs to run this offense the way they wanted to run convert to third Downs all the all the cliches that you have out there run the ball and they'll be able to win a bunch of games for him plus I mean I've been Haring on this since day one that veteran leadership we might scoff at it or whatever Mike Tomlin takes takes great and pride in having that a guy like that it might be Russell Wilson being phony who knows I don't know Russell Wilson that much that way to be able to make that determination but it doesn't matter as long as he has those other 10 guys in that huddle believe in which I think he does then that's all they need and that's more important than a lot of things absolutely I want to talk more about Justin fields and include wanted to talk to you more about Justin Fields here but before we do that I want to get a chance for people to hear Justin Fields because he did speak to us a couple times in ota's mini camp and this was the the most recent time I believe we got the chance to speak with him picked out some certain responses that he had to us when we were asking our questions but just for a minute here here's Justin Fields when we spoke to him at Steelers mini camp you guys now officially in mini camp kind of getting things going how do you feel the offense is coming together and how are you guys all adjusting to it um you know we' we've been you know in the offense for a minute now so it's really just the only difference between ocas and mini C is just more reps and uh you know different periods so pretty much same thing we had a two minute uh yesterday so um it's good for us that we're getting in uh different situations and you know just bringing that awareness of up and stuff like that so it's good we' heard a lot about the accountability that Arthur Smith is in still what's it been like for you just seeing just the early stages of how he challenges people and how they respond to I mean yeah I mean at the end of the day I think we're all grown men in here so um you know you should automatically you know take accountability for you know everything you do on the field whether it's something good whether it's something bad um and I think everybody's responded well to that so um you know I think that does nothing but you know makes everybody better um a lot your teammates to you know put more trust in to whoever it is that's taking accountability at the time what what you seen the guy with yeah I mean he's quick um you know he can create a lot of space in uh small spaces so uh he's quick you know savv with his route running and um you know he's just he's just a hard worker you know you know there's some plays where he knows he's not getting the ball and he's still still winning the route so um you know just to have that player uh a player like that give that much effort on the field every play it's really um really good to see and I think it's you know really uh going to rub off on the other guys too what's it been like working with Tom and what's he been kind of working with you on yeah I mean Tom's been great um just his ATT attention to detail um the way he comes you know in each and every day he comes in the same guy every day and uh to be honest I haven't you know I don't think I've had a coach that detailed as Tom you know he's very detailed in terms of you know you know practice review sending us uh the info breaking down each and every play um and really just really just focus on the details to be honest with you I think that's the thing that sets him apart and um you know he's he pushed us to be hard I mean our our Indie periods are you know condition so um of course that's good for us but I mean he's been great so far so excited to uh you know allow that allow our relationship to grow and excited to work with you really deall efficiency numbers in time Chic especially last what what what what AR Smith and the offense talk about you trying to make make that incorporate that into being a big part of this offense um I mean yeah uh I think we have fast guys guys that can get down the field with speed uh guys like quz Calvin Scotty um van um you know me and Russ you know we' we've had a lot of deep ball success and a lot of explosive plays in the past so um you know that's just uh you know what I guess how our offense is built to be honest with you but I mean our job is to create explosives and um you know push the ball down the field so anytime we get those Ops we definitely want to capitalize on those are your coach exing any part of your mechanics in any way I mean yeah I think there's always room to improve mechanic wise and stuff like that so um I think you know Matt Baker uh he's a quarterback assistent he you know usually stays on me the most about it so I appreciate the fact that he does that and uh usually you know make sure he doesn't make sure I just just stay on top of it you know as a whole and you know make sure uh my CICS are always clean when we talked to Russ yesterday he said that Russ said that he personally felt kind of revived you know being at another stop in his career is there any of that sense of maybe Rejuvenation or feeling revived obviously you haven't been in the league for 13 years but is there a new energy that you get being in a different organization going through many Camp in a different way for the first time I think so um you know just being around a new team uh uh an organization that's you know just just with this culture um you know me being in you know two different places now you just I realize that you know you don't get this culture um everywhere I think Chicago I think they are you know kind of changing the narrative now um but I mean this is just been the culture here for so many years to where I mean you can see it it's just the way that you know we attack each and every day and U Coach T he stays honest about it so I think just having that and uh you know reiterating that you know each and every day that keeps guys in their toes and uh guys ready to compete each and every day so a lot of different things there mark but I I I think one thing that I I take back from all of this is Justin Fields isn't coming in here with any delusions of grandeur he's not trying to take over the world he's not trying to just jump in I mean he'd love to be the starter sure but he recognizes like hey this is a new offense that everybody's learning right now this is a Russell Wilson's a a a an experienced quarterback that he has the opportunity to learn behind and you know and and work with during during training camp and this is an opportunity for Justin fields to reset his career because he got Cast Away by the team that drafted him in the first round a lot of quarterbacks when that happens to them they don't bounce back or their career backups this is his chance if he approaches this year the right way takes it seriously and improves himself this could be his chance to revive that and that's where I think Russ Russell Wilson talked about Reviving I think he recognizes this is an opportunity to revive his career yeah not many times you get to go somewhere and have a guy of Russell Wilson's resume and even Mike tomman resume or even Arthur Smith that fact I mean I find it intriguing that he that Justin Fields said he was working on his mechanics with uh was that Matt Baker their assistant quarterback coach um so kind of ironic there that he even recognizes that there's needs to be some work done with the mechanics as well for him but yeah Phils has an opportunity here I mean there's a lot of time between now and the beginning of the season of course but he needs to show improvement though I mean I obviously he's on that oneyear deal right so I mean they didn't pick up his fifth year option so he's GNA have an opportunity to go somewhere else say if it doesn't work out right now where he doesn't feel he'll have an option next year maybe he doesn't want to be a number two so he might not want to sign type of situation as well that's why I think coming they'll probably wait till the last moment possible to to make that decision on fields if they want approach him for a contract extension but until then he needs to say all the right things do all the right things show the Improvement um be willing and open to uh coaching and being able to use that and apply it to the situation so I think he's in the in the good best position he wants to be but you always have to remember too Chris was if Kenny picket didn't say I want to be traded Justin Fields wouldn't be here right now so it tells you the difference between the organizational View of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields they sure they would have loved to have Justin Fields but you know they chose Russell Wilson over him so back to that quarterback battle so to speak but Phils does have a great opportunity it might be his last opportunity but have a good opportunity here coming up but he's going to have to improve in training camp he comes out there and just starts throwing some Moon balls and doesn't know what's going on then they're going to say forget it let's move on and let's deal with something else so he he I think he realized for that though absolutely I want to talk more about what the Steelers want specifically for their quarterback in Russell Wilson Andor Justin fields for the future we'll do that next here on the lockone Steelers podcast I'm your host Chris Carter here with Mark caboy of the athletic stick with us with Mark caboy of the athletic Mark I want to talk more about what the what the offense is GNA ask of the quarterback position this year because there's some people out there that think that well neither of these guys can light up the scoreboard and throw you know can compete with Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen and Joe burrow and I I continue to look at the the way the Steelers have constructed this roster and the way that Arthur Smith looks like he's putting together this offense the quarterbacks aren't going to need to keep up with these guys this offense is going to be about possessing the football running the football playing using the pass to play off off of running the football and and setting up the defense to have shorter games where they can Dominate and not have to be on the field as many times as they were last year because the Steelers were terrible at time of possession for the first half of the season do you look at this as as as that being an easier opportunity for both Wilson and Fields to fit in because they're not going to be asked to throw 50 times a game both times I think it's easier for Wilson because like you said he's had a history of doing that over his career he knows what was able to win he knows how to convert the third Downs he was very good inside the Red Zone those are the things he has to do this year he doesn't have to go out there and throw you know four touchdowns in in a game he doesn't really have to do that what you want to do is limit the mistakes and that goes back to the defensive side you don't want to put the defense in a bad spot to be able to you know expose them at all which you know get off track a little bit here why they brought in a guy like Cameron Jon their punter to help that out a little bit as well to put their defense in better position to I mean they struggled at times last year I think they were they 21st in the league I think in total off defense but you know um so that's one thing that they need to do they obviously need to run the ball well I'm still concerned with I'm not concerned over Russell because I think he'll be able to be good enough to be able to win games where I get concerned at is that number two receiver spot I mean it I mean we're just blowing into the wind here or spitting into the wind is that what they call it at this point I mean I know the Steelers love what those guys did in the off in training camp or mini camp and OTAs M but but come on we all know it's going to happen week one if if there's not a legit number two all of a sudden George picking taken out of the game all of a sudden that trickles down to you know more heavy boxes less running success George picking taking out the game now you're asking Calvin Austin and Pat friou to win games for you so it can go south in a hurry here so I still think there's a little bit more needs to be done or a lot more needs to be done with a wide receiver position but I think Russell will be a guy that don't lose it for us type of mentality I mean it might be boring football it might not be football that you're going to tune into or 2024 football but nobody says that's not a way it can win if you if you do it correctly so that's the way they chose to go let's see if it's the right way or the wrong way and again I I think this is something that again could fit Russell Wilson's skill set very well again last year he threw 26 touchdowns and actually eight interceptions I said nine uh with the Denver Broncos people say well he was seven and eight that didn't matter well I don't think that was a Russell Wilson problem that was a Denver Broncos problem because guess what his touchdown to interception ratio was when the Seahawks won the Super Bowl back in 2013 it was 26 to9 and then the year after that when they made the Super Bowl and just lost uh in the in the Super Bowl to the Patriots it was 20 to7 that's very much Theo of what the Seahawks try and wanted to do with the with with that era of football and I think the Steelers are trying to get back to doing something like that and again with Arthur Smith's offense would he brought to the table um you saw how how he what he did with the Titans you know people say well the Titans did you know offense did well but they weren't you know Super Bowl contenders or anything like that I think that's because the Titans didn't have a a great defense or even a very good defense that year they ran the ball well they had some good decent defensive players but they didn't have a TJ watt they didn't have a make it Fitzpatrick and they didn't have I think what could be the most complete version of the Steelers defense that we've seen for quite a few years now yeah there's not many holes there at all but you know another thing is is I don't know if I believe it 100% but I know Tomlin believes that the black and blue division need to run the ball especially late season November December there's something to that I mean look at the poor weather last year in Baltimore I should know because I got soak and wet walk into the Press Box but um that could be something there too you know if it's a bad game or bad weather game you could be able to turn to those type of situations so um once again that's not how the league is played for the most part but it is how the leg is played or in the division other than maybe B other than Cincinnati Cleveland wants to run the ball Baltimore wants to run the ball I guess Cincinnati would like to run the ball they got a decent offensive line now but not a running back so to speak I don't even know who their running back is the guy from uh the Colts whoever that yeah so there is something to plus you play Kansas City you play uh Philadelphia late uh this could be it but people don't I mean it's weird Andy white white loves that Philadelphia philosophy and that's why they're off offensive lines here but it seems like the fans here are like split you know it's it's strange it's like half of them say this is not going to work anymore this power game don't lose it play defense and half of them say yeah that's how we have to do it so hey you Comm they committed to it they committed to the offensive line they committed to two running backs they committed to a quarterback that May shouldn't be turning the ball over and should hit the easy passes everything seems to be in place it's now can you put it together fast enough and can you handle that last eight games of the year which is just brutal yeah I I agree there it's it's it's about constructing this offense in a way that that that works um you know again again you talked about you know being a team that can run the football and do things well again this doesn't mean they're not going to throw the football it just means they're going to have a more Bal attack you know you look at the Chiefs they're often they rank like towards the bottom in the league in rushing and very high up in passing but the Chiefs aren't the only model and the Chiefs are the only team with Patrick Mahomes whereas teams that have you know that have been contenders against them like the 49ers they're a team that can throw the ball but they're about running the football dominating the line of scrimmage and also playing great defense and being one of the best defens in the NFL that's how the Eagles were were you were a contender recently they were able to run the football play talented defense and uh and get after that way by the way the guy one of the guys that was the architect of building that Eagles roster Andy widle who you just mentioned Steelers director of player Personnel who works under Omar Khan right now so um I I really think again a lot of this this quarterback talk spins into the whole conversation of how they've constructed the team what they're going to ask the quarterback I want to get your thoughts on this real quick mark you brought up the second wide receiver position we've brought this a lot up a lot on the show as the rumors have spun out what do you think is the most like thing to happen not what fans want to happen not Brandon auker you know trading for DK meta what do you think is actually the move that you foresee the Steelers taking to the the starting when day one starts they play the Atlanta Falcons in in Atlanta who's gonna be their their one two and three at w w wide receiver well let me preface this by say is I'm not never giving up on Omar making a big splash at some point even though I'm gonna say I don't think it's going to happen just for the fact that that t of money I mean you're looking 30 million bucks potentially for IU plus draft picks I don't know if you want to go down that route with TJ Watts contract up and you got to pay a quarterback so the way I look at they'll find somebody here on the final release day was at August 27 28th is where they have to cut down to 53 they'll find some of they can bring in it's not it's not going to be a great guy it's not going to be a a guy that turns heads they're going to need play from the Roman Wilson and guys like that but I think Pat frith all of a sudden gets amped up a level here and they're going to ask a little bit more from him so um and another one that's really really interesting to me is Cordo patters I I agree there's no way you give him two years and six million bucks to be a kick return yeah there has to be other plans involved and they're saying hey you probably say hey why didn't you see it in in training camp well he was there in mini camp for the most part OTAs he there a couple times and they're just going through basic stuff we'll see that more in in training camp but something tells me that there's more to it there this is a big guy can run the ball who's been a wide receiver for what eight to 10 years his first 10 years he could be somebody that takes up the slack as well but you're hoping if that doesn't happen Roman Wilson does one of those skyrocketed rookie seasons and Calvin Austin finds his Niche finally and gets used correctly and I think fmuth is a guy that's he's all destined to have a tremendous season if he's healthy so I don't see them making a move although I'm waffling here although I wouldn't be shocked if Omar pulled one off listen Omar Khan is kind of shown hey don't underestimate his ability to to to bring the splash to surprise everyone but at the same time I've been with you like I've been on the side of like people say oh just get just go trade for Brandon I that simple yeah giving up a first first and change for a guy that you're paying $30 million for that's not that simple there's a lot of other things that would have to happen along with that and there's other guys I've talked about like courland Sutton you know that could make sense but I think at the end of the day that that move only happens if training camp goes very poorly for multiple players if Roman Wilson looks like he is not playable at a training camp if Calvin Austin looks like okay he's he's still not he can't be a number even a consistent number three option on on this team I think that's when the Steelers might say okay we re we we missed on a lot of these receiver guys outside of pickings let's see how we let's see how we can address things there but again they'll only do it if the price is right the price tag the price tag in the pck now all of a sudden the yes the price tag is going down a little bit you know it's probably want to be the first the whatever it was now the longer you wait the more noise you hear out of I you not want to be there not showing up all of a sudden it might be hey here's a fourth rounder just take him then maybe you can work out a deal I don't know I don't know how they work those things but you know he wants 26 283 and that at the numbers of receivers are getting in the year he had last year and his ability to block which you just can't even put into terms and MoneyWise and how much it might help out this offense in that way he would be well worth it I just don't know if they're willing to go down that Route AB absolutely there's a lot of things to still cover about this team that we will continue to cover all throughout this offseason as we get ready for training camp in Late July Mark thanks so much for joining us here on the locked on Steelers podcast let
