[Music] [Music] hey guys welcome back to the channel I'm summer if you're new and in today's video I'm going to be showing you how to do calligraphy with a pencil I'll also explain some of the reasons why I think they're great for beginners practicing calligraphy but before we get started if you haven't already watched my previous video I definitely recommend watching it for this it's a beginner's guide to calligraphy and it explains all of the basic strokes and how to form every calligraphy letter of the alphabet it's mainly using a Crayola pen so if that interests you definitely give that a watch and come right back to this video so calligraphy using a pencil is a great way to get started because firstly everyone has a pencil you can use any type of paper when you're using the pencil and this is unlike any other calligraphy medium where you would may need to use very specific smooth paper in order for the calligraphy pens to write smoothly and effectively also you can rub them out and they're really cheap pencils also have a really good grip on paper so that means you can go nice and steady when you're creating your Strokes so the pencil I'm going to be using is the papermate non-stop mechanical pencil it's a HB pencil so I advise you guys to use pencils which are HB and above so HB 2B 3B 4B 5B try and avoid pencils which have the letter H or the letter F is these pencils are very hard and won't give you as much of a difference between the thick and thin lines so you can kind of see that this clip [Music] here so here you can see that I'm just rotating the pencil slightly so that you can see a slant on the pencil this is going to be what gives me that thick and thin line so for the thin lines I'll use the point and for the thick lines I will use the slant so with calligraphy whenever you go up you want to create a thin line and apply light pressure and whenever you go down you want to apply more pressure so you can create a thicker line you'll probably end up using enough pressure to indent the paper but this is just one of the drawbacks of using a pencil as you're aware from my previous video calligraphy is made up of basic strokes and these are the building blocks for every single calligraphy letter so take a decent amount of time to practice these Strokes as it will greatly help you with your calligraphy the better you master these Strokes the more consistent your calligraphy will be and in turn the the neater it will look this is just a quick recap of the anatomy you want to make sure that the letters stay within the lines as shown and the main body of the letter will be in the central line so this is probably the most important part of the video because it shows you how to create every single letter from the basic strokes and also how to join those letters up so it's really great reference for when you're practicing on your own so just keep repeating this part and practice practice practice you can also notice that I'm lifting the pencil often and twisting it which gives me the thick and thin lines I also have pretty good control over the pencil here and you'll notice that you'll have good control too as pencils have a really good grip on the paper so here I'm just showing you how to write a few words using a pencil in caligraphy so I advise you to pause keep replaying and practicing the words yourself and see how closely it matches to what I have done the more you practice the better you get at writing the individual words and the better your calligraphy will be I'm also incorporating the nice capital letters with the lowercase ones I'll show you soon in another video how to do all of the capital letters in a calligraphy [Music] style [Music] so I do have a website where you're able to download a free calligraphy worksheet all you have to do is type in your email address and you'll be sent the worksheets so this is the document here it's a template for you to practice all of the basic Strokes all the lowercase letters all the letters joined together as well as the uppercase alphabet so just print it out or download onto your iPad and practice as many times as you need to and I'll warn you you'll probably need to practice quite a few times but this is a good guide for making sure that you're you're getting it right you're creating the right shapes so this is just the rest of the website I do have a onetoone online 1hour calligraphy session this is designed for people that are really struggling with the calligraphy regardless of the resources they're looking at online I work with you in this session to guide you through the basic strokes and formation of every single letter of the alphabet I also have a few calligraphy key sheets which contain information regarding how to construct every single letter from the basic Strokes so this is something that I created for my own personal use as I found it to be a really good reference when I was learning calligraphy so this is another sheet where I showed you all of the direction arrows when you're writing all of the letters I also do have a Blog where I go through extra tips and tricks so feel free to give that a read and let me know what you think all right that's everything in today's video I hope you enjoyed it make sure you hit that subscribe button if you did and stay tuned for more [Music] bye [Music]
