hey guys Tyler here one Star Trek topic that I've been dying to talk about on this channel is the Dominion specifically the Dominion's member races the largest known political entity in the gamma quadrant the Dominion has persisted for Millennia its hierarchical structure is primarily composed of three species at the top is a group of shape-shifting aliens called changelings who were the Dominion's Founders next are the vorta who act as administrators and Below them are the Jim Hadar the soldiers of the Dominion for much of its existence the Dominion has been dedicated to imposing the Founder's vision of order on the universe which entails bringing all other civilizations to heal under their control in this three-part video series I'd like to explore the history of the Dominion and highlight a few of its major species I'll begin with the changelings examining their history and culture as well as their biology let's get started before we get into the changelings biology and culture we first have to establish some background about the Dominion it's history its structure its aims Etc as we learn in Deep Space Nine the real origins of the Dominion are rather murky various clones of the vorto wayun offer differing statements as to the Dominion's true age in the episode to the death weyun states that the Dominion has endured for 2 000 years I.E since the 4th Century A.D later however in the episode The Dogs of War another wayun says that the Dominion has never surrendered in battle since its founding ten thousand years ago we know from what you leave behind that the Jim Hadar became the Dominion's first line of defense about 2 000 years ago or that is two Millennia before the 24th century giving more Credence to the age first established in to the death given weyun's Flair for the dramatic in his tendency to exaggerate I would say say that the 2000 year figure is probably more accurate regardless of the true age of their empire the Dominion has been around long enough that the true story of its founding as well as the creation of the founders servant races have all passed into Legend as the story goes in the ancient past the changelings roamed the stars in peaceful exploration despite their good intentions they were quote beaten hunted and killed by so-called solids familiar presumably humanoid carbon-based life forms who feared the changelings shape-shifting abilities the changelings subsequently founded the Dominion to protect themselves against persecution by the solids via totalitarian control they adopted the name changeling previously a pejorative as their own out of defiance and retreated to a rogue planet in the Omarion nebula adopting the philosophy that what you control can't hurt you the founders realized that they had to guide the solids believing that they must be bro broken of their Love For Freedom the founders used genetic engineering technology to create at least two servant races on behalf of the founders the vorta and the jemhadar began expanding the Dominion through a mix of diplomacy and conquest by the mid 24th century the Dominion has conquered hundreds of species throughout the game a quadrant the strict hierarchy of the founders at the top followed by the vorta then the Jim Hadar and then the subjugated races is known as the order of things and historically deviation from the order of things has been punishable by death the founders are rarely encountered by their subjects which has led to them becoming regarded as gods of a semi-mythical status in fact the vorta and Jim hidar are both bioengineered to worship the founders and commit their lives to serving them the founders extreme longevity has provided them with a unique viewpoint they do not adjust strategies based on what has happened in the past few weeks or even years but instead make plans centuries in advance they prefer not to use military might during initial contacts but instead take over using influence and Espionage this is showcased in the lead-up to the Dominion War during which changelings infiltrate various Alpha and beta quadrant powers and pose as important leaders instigating conflict between these powers and thus weakening them in prelude for an invasion unlike most of the other species in Star Trek's Milky Way and indeed unlike most other shape-shifting species in the Galaxy the changelings are distinctly liquid-based life forms in their natural state most changelings exist as an Amalgamated mass of viscous bronze organic matter known as the great link the great link is the foundation of changeling society and provides meaning to their existence while in the link changelings have little sense of time or self they consider linking with one another as the ultimate form of intimacy yeah indeed changelings regard all other members of their species as their family though it's unclear if this is a genetic relationship or simply a social one being in the link is considered Paradise for the changelings and even Odo who bitterly opposes the agenda of the founders has long dreamed of returning to it in fact this is the changeling's ultimate goal for all of their people to be United in the great link to this end despite their protectionist philosophy the changelings have engaged in a long-term Endeavor to gather as much information as they can about the Galaxy sometime before the mid to late 22nd century the link sent out 100 infant changelings to wander the Stars these infant changelings were implanted with an instinctive urge to return to the Omarion nebula one day the founders did not expect any to return until the late 27th century and they did not expect any Alpha beta quadrant powers to reach their space until the mid to late 26th Century thus it came as a surprise naturally when Starfleet discovered the bajorn wormhole in 2369 and started exploring the gamma quadrant bringing the founders face to face with one of their own little baby boys Odo over 300 years early while the founders were aware of the Federation long before the Wormhole was discovered their early arrival in the Dominion's backyard forced the founders to reassess their plans if the great link is so great though how does it really work in fact how do the changelings reproduce we don't actually know angry comments and coming it's highly insinuated that unlike other non-corporeal species like the organians or the Q the changelings were never humanoid we do know that their cellular structure consists of what is called a morphogenic matrix and they use morphogenic enzymes in order to facilitate their shape-shifting ability the morph part of the name implies that the very basis of changeling biology is fundamentally geared towards shape shifting and it's not just some Superfluous ability while many Earth phyla are known to undergo metamorphosis of course these Transformations happen in distinct stages in the time elapsed between individual Transformations is well much longer than instantaneous indeed as I mentioned earlier the changelings are just distinct from even other shape-shifting aliens such as the camyloids or the elasomorphs changelings or at least inexperienced ones must revert back to their liquid state every 16 to 18 hours in order to regenerate preventing them from doing so can result in physical distress and cause their their forms their their skin what have you to deteriorate and Flake away changelings can take virtually any corporeal form and can even mimic the personalities of humanoids to the point that it's indistinguishable from the original they can also transform parts of themselves into functional electrical devices such as computers pads and comb Badges and even mimic the forms of fire and clouds at least in the DS9 era it is incredibly difficult for Starfleet sensors to detect a changeling when they mimic other forms and they cannot be read by telepaths shape-shifting even gives changelings a physical in empathy with other life forms allowing them to gain knowledge a power that the founders use to their advantage during their infiltration of local space also not only do changelings not need to breathe but they can also survive lengthy periods of time in the vacuum of space which additionally means that other factors such as tremendous fluctuations and temperatures solar winds or most types of radiation have negligible negative impact on them moreover as seen in the DS9 episode Chimera changelings have the potential to become capable of interstellar travel without the need for an actual spacecraft since they can obviously learn to somehow generate enough thrust to reach high sublight speeds a bunch of overpowered blobs man but that's not even the end of it folks changelings also have no need to take in sustenance even when in humanoid form even lacking a sense of taste and smell but somehow they are able to gradually increase their their mass and assume more complex forms as they mature this means that just like any other life form changelings must drive energy from somewhere DS9 writer Robert Hewitt Wolff theorized that changelings pull their energy directly from Subspace using a Subspace pocket to store additional Mass during a morph alternatively they could derive energy through a process called chemosynthesis or the breaking down of carbon molecules through the oxidation of inorganic compounds or ferrous ions this process is used by some microorganisms in the dark depths of Earth's oceans able to produce biomass by breaking down lone carbon molecules however if this is the way that changelings exchange energy with their environment it probably would have been observed or at least mentioned in the show and it's not but I still wanted to talk about chemosynthesis for a minute regarding the radical changes inside days during a changelings transformation odo's range has been shown to go from something as small as a super rat to something as large as the monster in the episode the alternate during the climax he ends up being around 3 meters or 10 feet tall and his volume could apparently engulf several full-grown men alterations and size of such magnitude can hardly be explained through changes in structural density alone furthermore there's the question of weight as well logically Odo or any other changeling should weigh the same at all times in the same gravity that is no matter how much they shrink or bloat and automatically increase or decrease their density accordingly well at least that's what's supposed to happen in the episode Vortex Odo transforms himself into a drinking glass and places himself on a tray which ROM has no trouble carrying assuming that Odo weighs the same as an average adult male around 80 kilograms or 176 pounds then surely ROM would have noticed that something on the tray weighed 80 kilos right well the fact that he didn't means that changelings can manipulate their density as well as their weight with no regard for the relevance of their immediate size as touched upon before there must be some sort of advanced Mass shifting with extra Dimensions at play normally if a living being were to change its size Say by pulling its atoms closer together as an Ant-Man the changes in surface area and volume would cause its metabolism to seize entirely the way that changelings get around this would involve physics that we hardly understand or have yet to observe but as for the shared Consciousness well that's less hard to imagine many species exhibit a form of Hive intelligence though changelings separated from the link can obviously function as individuals themselves so they're not exactly like the Borg whose hive mind is presumably derived from Runaway experimentation with cybernetics no the changeling's organic structure allows them to share neural information at will across the entire link this distributed nervous system is possibly one of the changeling's most alien features and is completely different from traditional brain chemistry that said some Earth animals like the octopus have a nervous system that is distributed across the length of their arms with each one able to act independently so there is some precedent new octopuses were aliens I need to put a Galaxy Quest reference in there when it comes to individual identity most changelings appear to favor either a male or female form though it's uncertain if this is indicative of a true biological sex or gendered Identity or simply a matter of preference indeed the real world reason for this development is probably for the benefit of the audience since the founders stayed on multiple occasions how much they despise the solids they also state that they do not find the humanoid form to be particularly comfortable and only assume it when interacting with other species to get their message across nevertheless changelings can experience feelings of sexual attraction to humanoids and can even engage in sexual intercourse though they cannot have a child with a solid we may never know how exactly changelings reproduce but as a vorta would say the founders work in mysterious ways so to recap in their natural state changelings exist as a viscous liquid of unknown composition that has a morphogenic matrix and morphogenic enzymes allowing them to shapeshift they drive energy from an unknown source but this Source may be tied to Subspace meaning that the changelings biology may involve extra Dimensions beyond the measurements of normal space-time they may use a pocket Dimension to store extra mass during a morph and they can precisely mimic the properties of just about any organic or inorganic form allowing them to evade sensor detection they share thoughts and emotions across a gigantic organic neural network called the Great link though changelings can still Express individual identity and sexuality changeling's preference for order efficiency and rules informs their Outlook of the universe which entails supreme authority over a vast and Powerful Interstellar Empire while we may never have all of the answers when it comes to the changelings biology as well as their true Origins My Hope Is that this video did serve as at least an overview of what we do know and what could be true in future videos I will explore the biology history and culture of the other two major Dominion races the forta and the Jim hidar hey guys Tyler here in a previous Star Trek video I examined the biology history and culture of the changelings shape-shifting aliens who founded a vast Interstellar Empire in the Milky Ways gamma quadrant called the Dominion the changelings aka the founders created at least two servant races to help them impose their will on the cosmos the vorta who act as administrators and the Jim Hadar who are the soldiers of the Dominion the vorta are genetically engineered to serve and worship the founders and are the commanders of Jim Hadar units in this video I'd like to explore the vorta in more detail investigating their Origins as well as their society so without further Ado let's get started [Music] according to Legend in the ancient past the changelings roamed the stars in peaceful exploration despite their good intentions they were beaten hunted and killed by so-called solids who feared the changelings shape-shifting abilities on one planet possibly the planet Krill Prime in the gamma quadrant a family of small timid ape-like forest dwellers hit a changeling from an angry mob in return the changeling promised that they would one day transform the species into powerful beings and place them at the head of a vast Interstellar Empire this species none other than the vorta the founders would have recognized the young hominid's potential bestowing them with abilities such as enhanced hearing and other less desirable traits such as submissiveness when in the presence of a changeling but these aren't the only traits that make the vorta biologically distinct all vorta that we see also have pale skin violet eyes and elongated ears that are joined to the rest of their head their eyesight is comparatively weaker than other humanoid species possibly the result of extra Starlight from Krill primes two sons an f-class star and a G-Class star their weaker eyesight would presumably have been compensated for by their enhanced hearing the vorta are also immune to most forms of poison which weighing in the states comes in handy as a diplomat I would imagine it does even before they were genetically engineered the vorta also had a limited palette mostly enjoying kava nuts and ripple berries they generally have no appreciation for art no time for such things when you're running an authoritarian Interstellar Empire in addition to enhanced hearing and intelligence some vorta possess other capabilities Beyond those of humans heiress is the only vorta shown on screen who possesses telekinesis and she is able to produce telekinetic bursts with the same strength as a standard issue phaser set to stun in later appearances however as the DS9 Riders gave more thought to vortibiology they disregarded telekinesis by simply omitting it from subsequent outings The Writer's rationale was that the founders may have given heiress telekinesis for a specific purpose though Ronald D Moore had stated on an earlier occasion that perhaps other vorta are also telekinetic but had no situations in which it would come up it's possible that telekinesis is a trait that is present in a fraction of the vorta population perhaps those who possess a particular recessive gene however given that the vorta were engineered for a specific purpose this explanation may be inadequate the phenomenon of an advanced alien civilization altering other beings to make them more intelligent is called uplifting it's a concept that's been present in science fiction since at least the late 19th century some examples include the novel The Island of Dr Moreau by H.G Wells as well as later the uplift universe created by David Brin who also coined the term the practice of uplifting can be achieved through evolutionary intervention or simply cultural and technological Exchange in DS9 though it's clear that the vorto were uplifted by the changelings using genetic engineering but is it even possible to uplift members of an animal species to human intelligence well the short answer is well no for now but the long answer is it's more complicated stay animal cognition is a widely studied field influenced by other disciplines such as comparative and evolutionary psychology not only do we know that numerous animals such as other Apes crows and octopuses can use tools but more broadly speaking a wide variety of animal classes mammals reptiles fish and invertebrates alike are all capable of learning and making sense of their surroundings of course it's important to remember that when measuring intelligence it's difficult often to remove bias since intelligence doesn't just mean human-like Behavior All Creatures are adapted to survive in their own environments which is given rise to memes like crabs being more advanced than humans but the act of enhancing animals neurological activity does have a basis in real world science case and point in 2014 researchers at MIT discovered a human gene called Fox P2 that appears to be critical in humans capacity for language when the researchers genetically engineered mice to express Fox P2 the mice learned to run mazes more quickly than their normal counterparts this suggests turning on Fox P2 helped the mice convert experiences into memories more efficiently another study at Wake Forest University in 2012 saw researchers use brain implants to help rhesus monkeys perform better on intelligence tests the monkeys were given drugs to simulate Alzheimer's disease which initially hindered their performance but after being fitted with neural Prosthetics the monkeys quickly regained normal brain function furthermore when the Prosthetics were implanted into normal monkeys they scored beyond their original results God it's planted in the Apes it should be noted that while these Studies have provoked much speculation and debate about uplifting animals it's still unclear as to whether it's really scientifically feasible to do so let alone desirable as Christine Shu wrote for Yale scientific most animals physiologies are not well suited for enhanced neural activity or intelligible Communication in practice uplifting animals would quote require impossibly extreme modifications to nearly every aspect of their bodies and Minds The uplifting philosophy also assumes that human intelligence is the end goal of evolution which I mean it's it's not it's really not have you met the average person furthermore there's the question of consent by definition uplifted animals would have been unable to express agreement or disagreement with neural enhancement procedures nevertheless Advocates of uplifting say that it would be unethical to withhold intelligence from other species perhaps the founders saw it as imperative to uplift the vorte with the express purpose of course of creating a servant race out of them indeed this is a concern that some bioethicists have about granting human level intelligence to other animals there's a risk it would create a class of literally sub-human slaves a Trope that has appeared in numerous science fiction stories such as cord weiner Smith's the instrumentality of mankind and indeed that's pretty much exactly what the founders did with both the vorta and the jimhadar the concept of uplifting isn't just confined to humans bestowing intelligence upon other Earth animals however in fact perhaps a more apt analogy to the changelings in the vorta is the ancient astronaut hypothesis many are familiar with the alleged existence of so-called Ancient Aliens the idea being that humans in Antiquity and prehistoric times were visited by extraterrestrials these extraterrestrials supposedly gave early humans technology and possibly even created us giving us the tools to build structures like the pyramids because apparently humans couldn't build something like that on our own you think brown people made that [Laughter] no no no [ __ ] way no the hypothesis has been popularized in no small part by the show Ancient Aliens on the History Channel not only has the show inspired memes Galore did ancient alien Ali shape the first Thanksgiving but it's also garnered lots of flack for promoting pseudoscientific claims about ancient cultures achievements and belief systems of course the ancient astronaut hypothesis isn't new by any means in fact a lot of the arguments associated with ancient astronauts originate from Eric Von daniken's 1968 book Chariots of the Gods authors like Von daniken often use distorted interpretations of ancient texts to prove that early societies had contact with extraterrestrials and that these aliens were revered as Gods azerbaijani author Zakaria sichin also wrote numerous books promoting the idea that the ancient Sumerian deities called the Anunnaki were actually an alien race from a planet called Nibiru the Anunnaki allegedly created humans by mixing their DNA with that of homo erectus via in vitro fertilization the purpose of this was to create a slave species to mine gold for some reason and the Anunnaki only left Earth after their bases were destroyed by the great flood that inspired the Epic of Gilgamesh and the story of Noah in Genesis yeah it sounds pretty dumb when you think about it in Star Trek the Original Series Gene Roddenberry generally shied away from giving credence to the ancient astronaut hypothesis he insisted that in his vision of the Star Trek universe humans achievements were our own and not necessarily the result of outside help of course multiple episodes of subsequent Trek shows have not shied away at all from embracing certain aspects of the ancient astronaut hypothesis including the Animated Series how sharper than a Serpent's tooth and voyager's tattoo and to a limited extent Enterprises carbon Creek so it seems that technological uplifting is actually relatively common in the Star Trek universe and to a degree this does make sense Star Trek's Milky Way is pretty crowded bustling with thousands of alien species many of which have had warp technology for Millennia so it's natural that some of them would use their technological prowess to tamper with the evolution of other races to suit their own ends foreign above all else one of the most distinctive aspects of vorta biology is that they are all clones if a vorta is killed they are replaced with a clone that retains all the memories and much of the personality of their predecessor vorta regard their previous incarnations as individuals distinct from themselves often referring to previous clones by number or as my predecessor clones can also occasionally become defective taking on different undesired traits than previous clones however even non-defective clones can exhibit slightly different tastes and inclinations to other incarnations of the same vorta the science and ethics behind cloning in the Star Trek universe and honestly in real life may warrant an entire video of their own but I think it's utterly fascinating that this is the way that vorta are manufactured to say that they're born is perhaps a misnomer not only do we never see any vorta who are pregnant but we never see any vorta children either as a matter of fact vorta are grown in cloning facilities it's uncertain when this aspect of Fortis Society was first introduced whether it was independently developed by the vorta themselves or more likely that it was a policy put in place by the founders the concept of cloning a fully adult humanoid and implanting them with memories is of course distinctly different from attempts at cloning in real life while some simple organisms like bacteria can clone themselves via binary fission more complex animals like Dolly the sheep were created by taking a cell from Dolly's mother and inserting it into her ovum to create an embryo the Sheep then experienced a normal pregnancy and the embryo was brought to term but inserting memories into the brain of a fully grown humanoid while perhaps theoretically POS possible requires an understanding of Neuroscience and Mastery of genetic engineering that we have definitely not yet achieved admittedly I mainly focused on the vorta's origins and biology in this video while only taking a cursory glance at their history of course there's only so much that we know from Canon surprisingly little actually and frankly the vorta being genetically uplifted clones is honestly one of the most interesting aspects of this extraterrestrial species indeed it sets them apart from lots of other aliens in Star Trek their role as administrators of the Dominion and their undying loyalty to the founders cement just how much of a threat they are and in a future video I'll examine the biology history and culture of the Dominion's first line of defense the Jim hidar hey guys Tyler here in previous Star Trek videos I've examined the biology history and culture of the changelings aka the founders of the Dominion in the gamma quadrant as well as their most powerful servant race the vorta in this video I'd like to do the same for the Dominion's first line of defense the Jim Hadar a genetically engineered humanoid species the Jim Hadar make up one of the most powerful military forces in the Galaxy during the late 24th century their unique physiology upbringing and social structure set them apart from many other alien species in Star Trek's Milky Way today I'd like to explore the science behind the gemhadar using both real world and in-universe Concepts let's get started while each vorta that we meet on screen is a fully adult clone the Jim hidar as we learn are generated in birthing Chambers or hatcheries their growth cycle has accelerated so much that they reach full maturity only three days after emergence they do not procreate naturally and their species consists solely of males given that the gemidar are engineered it's possible that the founders decided that artificial wombs like the tanks observers are grown in in Fringe would be more efficient believe it or not this type of reproduction actually has some basis in real world science to find out how we have to go back to the year 1924 when British scientist JBS haldane coined the term ectogenesis the growth of mammalian embryos in artificial environments haldane's essay Daedalus or science in the future was regarded at the time as a shocking piece of Science Fiction but later proved remarkable in predicting many scientific advancements in vitro fertilization or IVF was invented in 1959 and enabled the birth of a live rabbit the first human pregnancy using IVF then occurred in 1973 although it only lasted a few days but a major Milestone was reached five years later when Louise Brown became the world's first quote test tube baby after having been conceived on a petri dish the next few decades saw rapid development in the field and at lower cost by the early 21st century it became a mainstream Medical Technology with half a million test tube babies born around the world by 2004 and 10 times as many by 2012. further developments in Reproductive Medicine included the first baby born to a mother with a womb transplant which occurred in 2014 and three parent babies became possible in 2016 but an even more ambitious and challenging goal still lay ahead today the possibility of replacing traditional pregnancies with artificial wombs continues to tantalize scientists there are of course plenty of legal and ethical hurdles that still have to be overcome but genuine progress has been made with artificial animal wombs one study showed that a mouse embryo could be successfully grown on a lab-created extra uterine scaffold and other studies proved that both goat and human embryos could survive for 10 days in a prototype artificial womb consisting of a machine that delivers amniotic fluid in another decade or so some believe that human fetuses could be brought to term using this method with every step of the nine month process monitored in perfect detail ensuring a safe and efficient alternative to natural childbirth if it became mainstream mothers who choose this method would be freed from the lengthy painful and potentially Danger dangerous cycle of a normal pregnancy Advocates state it would also be another option for same-sex couples and single men to have children without the need for surrogate mothers and it could potentially reduce the number of well political buzzword that starts with the letter A [Music] so it seems that the concept of growing super soldiers and tanks may not be as far-fetched as it first appears but what about after they're born as infants Jim Hadar have complexions that highly resemble humans a significant departure from their final form within a day of maturation Jim had our children already have advanced cognitive reasoning and language skills as they age their skin thickens for better protection pales to a bluish gray color and becomes scaly and reptilian in appearance though I should point out that the rhinoceros was another visual inspiration behind this design as we can see in the latter seasons of DS9 with Jim hidar stranded in the alpha quadrant their facial scales apparently never stopped hardening and they did so to the point where they became ossified creating bony structures on their skulls as of now it's not clear if this double-edged process this condition would continue indefinitely and happen with scales on other parts of Jim Hadar bodies if yes then an extraordinarily long-lived Jim hidar could meet the same fate as many real world patients who have suffered from fibrodisplasia civicans progressiva or stoneman's disease becoming encased in an unyielding armored shell of what used to be their own skin trapped Motionless in their own bodies until their very last breath that's not that far away since so skillful capable and highly resilient Warriors the Jim hidar often are this could possibly be another reason that we never see a 30 year old specimen due to them eventually growing solid perhaps in their deafening blinding hatred for these so-called solids the founders managed to find among other virtues and vices a sickeningly ironic sense of humor in further regard to their appearance one real world reason for the apparent metamorphosis jimadar undergo is that the DS9 makeup team had to adhere to severe restrictions when it comes to makeup that could be applied to an infant in fact they were not allowed to apply any makeup paint or glue to the infant at all so makeup supervisor Michael Westmore opted for a simple prosthetic and I'd also bet that Rick Berman didn't want to reach deep into his pocket for the production of an animatronic puppet fewer makeup restrictions existed however for the boy that the infant grew into as we see in the abandoned while adolescent Jim hidar do need food for nourishment the only source of nourishment for adult chimhadar is the drug ketrocell white ketrocell white provides Jim hidara with all necessary nutrients as well as an isagenic enzyme deliberately emitted from their metabolism as a result all Jim Hadar are addicted to the white a not so subtle metaphor for crack cocaine which is regularly distributed by their vorta overseers a not so subtle metaphor for the CIA all of this is the Founder's means of ensuring Jim Hadar loyalty to both the vorta and the founders themselves without a steady supply of white Jim hidar suffer understandably from withdrawal symptoms their circulatory system begins to shut down and psychologically they become uncontrollably violent first attacking their enemies then their vorta overseers then finally each other the DS9 writers speculated that the gemhadar's aggression may be a holdover from how their species behaved before they were altered by the founders that they had a warrior Society even more barbaric than the Klingons this assumes that the jimidar were not totally artificially created from scratch which has never been confirmed one way or the other in Canon interestingly some rare Jim hidar are born with the ability to produce the isagenic enzyme without taking the white though these cases are few and far between and they still regularly consume the drug and never know they aren't addicted when it comes to some of their other physical attributes all adult gym padar are designed to have excellent strength and vision both greater than humans they also have limited natural camouflage an ability known as shrouding although they lose this ability when they suffer withdrawal from the white all adult gemitar also require no sleep and have extremely resilient bodies with a phaser set to stun having no effect on them Jim Hadar are engineered to be soldiers into crew Starships nothing more their culture shuns all forms of relaxation and Recreation believing such things make them weak in fact Jim had our Fighters and probably other jimadorship classes are not even equipped with chairs they probably don't have toilets either for that matter most Jim Hadar Die Young in battle and those who live past the age of 20 are referred to as honored Elders as I mentioned earlier no Jim hidar has ever been known to reach the age of 30. like the vorta the gym hidar are engineered to Revere the founders as Gods though most Jim hidar have never even seen a Founder the engineering behind their unquestioning loyalty is also not Flawless which is why it is necessary to make them dependent on the white the rebellion of a single gym hidar company has also been known to make Dominion experts nervous about uprisings from other units which could potentially lead to a complete takeover of the the Dominion in less than a year though the glory of the founders means everything to the gymedar they can also show a strong sense of Honor among themselves this is exemplified in the episode by inferno's light in which a Jim hidar accepts execution for insubordination after he refuses to kill Warf despite being ordered to by his vorta Superior this indicates that at least some Jim padar may prefer death to doing something that they consider dishonorable Jim had our combat units also follow a specific hierarchy every unit contains a Jim hidar first who is in command under the supervision of a vorta overseer each jimhadar after the first is also given an ordinal number rank and if a first is killed each member of the unit assumes the duties of the jimhadar above him he only receives the higher number rank however if his vorta overseer grants it the Jim padar even have ritual practices that they observe before each battle I am first omit Clan and I am dead as of this moment we are all dead we go into battle to reclaim our lives this we do gladly for We Are jimada remember victory is life the victory is his life when ketrocell white is dispensed another ritual usually takes place between the vorta and ranking jemhadar first to mediclan can you vouch for the Loyalty of your men we pledge our loyalty to the founders from now until death then receive this reward from the founders may it keep you strong jimadar firsts are also capable of Distributing white among those under their command and by 2374 Alpha quadrant Jim medar who have a culture distinct from their gamma quadrant Brethren no longer recite the ritual dispersal statement as they believe they demonstrate their loyalty through their actions alone and not their words when it comes to Weaponry the Jim hidar generally carry plasma weapons with pistol and rifle variants both capable of firing disruptor bursts with three settings stun kill and well vaporize the disruptor bursts are laced with anticoagulants designed to slowly kill their enemies if the burst itself does not other weapons include Subspace mines that vanish and appear at random termed Houdini Minds by Starfleet they remember who Houdini is and in close quarters they use melee weapons called Shock blades as well as combat knives and bayonets indeed Jim hidar weapons were designed to be totally unlike anything featured in the franchise before and yet not be totally unfamiliar either between all these details there's a reason that the Jim hidar had been one of the most feared armies in the Galaxy for over two thousand years covering the three Dominion species has been a lot of fun I've learned a lot about what makes each race unique I haven't really talked much about the history of the Dominion's territorial growth or its other member races although In fairness there's only so much to go on in Canon and even in the novels and games hopefully you've enjoyed this little mini series and hopefully you'll continue to enjoy my other videos discussing various alien species in Star Trek in the meantime thank you all so much for watching if you enjoyed this video be sure to leave a thumbs up down below and don't forget to
