what is a rib dib well that's another secret benefit out there from Social Security that a lot of people don't know about this is Ed we're a retired district manager the Social Security Administration uh we help people throughout the country with all things Social Security survivor benefits disability retirement and Medicare and also the Affordable Care Act so give us a call all our help is free schedule an appointment to whatever is convenient for you give us a call and let's see if we can help you out all right what's a rib dib um I've taken a few thousand uh probably about a thousand of these uh my a few decades with the Social Security Administration and Rib is retirement insurance benefits and dib is disability insurance benefits so it's called a rib dib internally in the Social Security Administration other inside scoop there and I've had a quite a few people recently over the last few weeks didn't know about this so you're 62 years old and you want to go ahead and file for retirement benefits and uh when the person called me they said oh yeah I'm 62 and how much can be reduced how do I go ahead and do it and stuff so I do the the regular thing I ask him a whole bunch of questions to see if I can find them some more money and uh with uh pretty successful doing that with through Medicare Social Security Medicaid uh extra help with the prescription drugs all kinds of different programs that I'm familiar with over the learned over the Decades of working for Social Security and prior to that uh the department of uh welfare 62 years old I want to go ahead and file for retirement and asking questions it was okay why are you going to go ahead and file for retirement early he says well I just I just can't work anywhere I just you know my body just just gave out I said well why don't you file for disability so I tell them that okay here's here's here's your options you know it's a decision you have to make yourself but I provide the options and then you make obviously the ultimate decision on what you want to what you want to do so you can go ahead and it sounds like you need the money so go ahead and file for retirement benefits beginning at 62 years old but because you also say that you're disabled file both at the same time thus the rib dip so it's very easy for the Social Security employee when you can do it on I don't think you can do a rib dip online social security system last I've checked isn't that advanced yet so but this is a definitely one that you need to uh talk to an actual claim specialist so called the 800 number and schedule an appointment um with uh your local office phone appointment or in-office appointment to file for the red dib um my connections at the Social Security Administration if uh if you uh see a rib div possibility coming down the line and through the computer system through online uh give me a call and tell me whether that's uh a uh whether it's working whether it's online is one thing whether it's a good way to do it online is sometimes it's it's a different question so um but uh um so you file for your retirement benefits and you start getting the money because you need some money to come in because your stop you're you're stopped work and you can start receiving your Social Security retirement benefits so you can turn on your retirement benefits and then why are you receiving your monthly check Social Security and the disability determination Services the state agency that makes the determination whether you're disabled or not they can be working on the disability portion of your application which takes anywhere from you know three to six months for the initial claim to be approved or denied so it works is um you when you file for disability you have the initial claim and if that's denied then some states some states don't they have What's called the reconsideration stage and that's a very very easy application to do it's uh just basically super easy um it's a SSA 561 and you request a reconsideration and then if that reconsideration takes about the same time about three to six months for that one to be approved somebody else that the the person that denied your disability application that will be that will not be the one that looks at the reconsideration will be another employee um so if you're denied at the reconsideration stage then you can uh file an appeal and actually have your time in front of administrative law judge but unfortunately that takes I've been afraid the the alj as they call administrative law judges uh it takes a year longer to get in front of there so all that time you're waiting um you can be receiving retirement benefits but say let's say if a uh approve your your disability after uh you know six months or so of being a retirement your disability benefits will be um for for most people it will be your full retirement age number so if let's say your your full retirement is two thousand dollars if you take it 62 it's reduced by you know uh 30 percent so we're talking what fourteen hundred dollars I'm doing my math right yeah so fourteen hundred dollars at uh 62 but if you wait until your full retirement age is two thousand dollars whenever people are approved for disability they receive that two thousand dollars as if they were their full retirement age the thing about the rib div application if you're already receiving your retirement if you receive it for six months and then your disability is approved depends when the on-site date is if your disability is approved then your disability won't be the full benefit amount the two thousand dollars because you've already taken some reductions so they will put a reduction factor in there but um very complicated uh very interesting but the Social Security will make the determination how many months your benefit amount will be reduced but the benefit is your benefit amount will definitely increase if you're approved for disability because if you take it at 62 unless it it's approved you know it's your full retirement agent takes years and years but even then they go back um it's always exception to exception to exception and if you're approved for disability if you're 62 years old in our example then your um your Medicare will start earlier if you're on disability Medicare starts 24 months after being on disability for 24 months if you're 62 and just wait for retirement then your Medicare won't start until you're 65 years old so that is uh essentially uh there's a lot more details in there but that's generally what a a rib dib type of claim is uh give me a call or give Social Security call set up an appointment and kick around your options and uh um if you want us to uh talk to you personally and see if we can help you out in any of that help you navigate the bureaucracy feel free to reach out to us and make sure you subscribe and like and all that kind of good stuff when you do that this video goes out to more people and that way more people know about these hidden programs that uh perhaps they will benefit them in their families so that's it for today have a beautiful day
