renovate back to the boat you know i don't think i ever caught a striper down here there he is oh that's a good one too yeah that's a good one yeah i miss it real good yeah dang i didn't bring a net that's a real good yeah i told you i didn't bring a net managed to come back there with you so just damn good did you have a bite i knew when you saw that bait there had to be some fish there god dang dude he got plenty hooks in his face tiny hooks and safe oh ain't that big not that big that's a good one yes on the jerk bait i just got through saying how i catch only small ones on the jerkbait and then i come up here he saw some hearing on the point there saw some hair in there on the point had some follow his bait back to the boat i was like that should be good that should be good and it was good i'm on this side put him on the large side i got two two different setups 10-pound test fluorocarbon and 30-pound test braid two very similar setups but at the same time these guys can really be different in their approach and they allow you to do two totally different things i already know what you're thinking here you're thinking brian jerk baits and that for cold weather quite honestly i have found that a jerk bait is probably one of the most potent post-spawn baits that you can use especially if you've got a lake like what i've got i've got a deep clear lake that i fish around here at home and a jerkbait is one of those things that works around the clock i'm gonna show you two different setups now the setup that i use for wintertime or for when when it's weather's cooler versus the setup that i'm using right now polar opposite don't hear a lot of people talk about this setup so i'm going to show you exactly what it is and what it looks like here let me find my two jerk baits because i've actually been fishing today is i guess you already know that i've been fishing today and um i actually caught a few fish on a jerkbait today but i've got two setups both of these are on a six eight uh moderate action rod six eight so obviously when you throw in a jerk bait you're doing a lot with the rod tip right well you want to use that six eight because using a six foot eight a shorter rod it just allows you to whip that rod tip you get you can manipulate the bait a little bit easier with a longer rod sometimes they can be a little hard they make a favorite rush that is a six foot six inch it has a pretty moderate action to it as well that's a great rod to use for a for jerk bait as well i think it's a medium action or medium power uh moderate action rod it's pretty soft that's a that's a good rod to use i want to say they have a white bird and a six six so you got both ends of the of the cost spectrum there you got the the rush uh that's in that 200 range and if you don't want to spend that much there's a six six big sexy and there's also a six six white bird so you got something from 50 bucks already 200 bucks that you want to spend until this pro series comes out some of it doesn't do you any good if you can't get the rod and i'm talking about it right so um that's what you got to fish with here um rod wise dig into the reels i like fast reels i know you're always hearing me talk about man slow real slow rail so real this is not a not a situation where i like to use a slow reel fast reel because what i'm doing is i'm actually not moving the bait at all with my reel i'm moving the bait with the rod i'm throwing it out all right that's all right there is no real i'm what what taking up the slack crap whap taking up the slap the less times i have to turn my real handle when i wrap wrap take up the slack you like the sound effects on this video take up the slack with the reel better off my day is alright so i don't have to work as hard uh it's just easier you're going to find this way efficient it will work you to death and you will have to build up some some muscle memory in your wrist your arms your shoulders because it's going to wear you out so if you're new to jerk baiting don't be surprised if you go out and the first couple hours or so you're just exhausted you're like dude there's no way i'm gonna be able to do this all day long that's a part of jerk bait fishing after you do it a little bit you'll get used to it you'll build up some muscle your hands will get stronger and you'll be able to do it all day without complaining i still get a little bit of fatigue when i'm throwing up when i'm throwing a a jerk bait sometimes so don't be surprised by that the setups that we're going to talk about is going to help you with some of that fatigue and it's also going to help you get a few strikes too of course that's what we're all we're always after let's talk about the my traditional this is just my i would call this my traditional jerkbait setup right here this is 6 8 moderate action medium heavy power i'm using it this is a 831 i think yep eight three two one lose pro ti and i'm throwing it on ten pound test strike king pro grade fluorocarbon all right my connected knot to my to my jerk bait is just a palomar knot and um that's you know that's that's the technical side of it this is just a short lip jerkbait this this is the 13 fishing it probably gets somewhere between three to five foot deep on a long cast all right see it's a translucent color i almost always so it's i got two if you go to my jerkbait box i don't in this boat i don't keep a full-fledged jerk bait box but if you were to go in my jerk bait box there is two different spectrums on the color deal that i got all right i got these translucent colors like this that are obviously shad representations i almost threw always throw my jerk bait when it's clear water no i'm very throwing stain water very often at all which i'm throwing this bait invisibility two to or i would say is as as clear as three to ten foot visibility here on this lake you can see down probably about four to six foot down very clearly right now so it's going to be these translucent clear colors like this that are very realistic or the polar opposite is it's going to be flat out ridiculous ugly pinks oranges uh bright fluorescent colors chartreuse that's the other end of the spectrum that i'll also have a lot of colors in and my jerk baits the reason being is for jerk bass it's all about drawing power even in clear water i like those bright colors because i have the power to get a fish's attention from a very long way so when i'm fishing a jerkbait around these points and the fish start to back off during the post spawn and they start to get in that you know 12 13 14 15 20 foot of water that's when i pull out those really bright colored jerk baits because that can pull the fish and get their attention all our baits are doing is getting their fish's attention you ever wondered why like pink worms work chartreuse works that doesn't look like anything in nature a lot of the baits we throw they don't look like anything a buzzbait what does a buzzbait look like nothing it doesn't look like nothing it looks stupid quite honestly a buzzbait looks ridiculous doesn't like a chad we put a frog on the back of a buzzbait tell me what sense that makes frogs don't go across the surface they don't do that right the reason that setup works so good is because it captures the fish's attention it's making so much noise so much racket and it's big and it's making all this hoopla on the surface he's got to come over there and see what it is and the fish doesn't know how to just look at it and walk away he has to strike it same thing with every bait that we use and more in particular with a jerk bait you know when it's when it's a blue bird scout uh you know sunny day like what i got right now not many clouds it's sunny it's bright i can get their attention with something like this but perhaps if it's cloudy or if the fish are a little deeper or or just perhaps the fish are just scattered out more that's when i like to use those bright colors when they're gathered up on one point of course it's easy to get the fish's attention the fish are right here and there's 20 of them right here on this one point sometimes that's not the case and you have to catch fish one here two over there nothing for four hours one over there and that situation i'll bring out the bright bold colors get their attention i need the fish to see my bait so that's when i bring out those bold colors so think about that color matters you know we we definitely sometimes we downplay what color is color matters but you don't have to have 1500 colors in your boat you need to have a couple in every spectrum of the color wheel you need to have some clears you need to have some shads you need to have some brights all right that gets you through every light condition every water condition that you come across so color 100 matters all right traditional setup that's what this one is it's just 10 pound test you can throw 12 pound test heck you can throw 14 pound test if you want to uh you know you are putting a lot of torque on your rod with with a jerk bait especially when you're working it aggressively my cadence is pretty aggressive this time of the year i'm not throwing it out there and letting it pause a long time i throw it out there and i'm not you know not a lot of pausing not a lot of pausing at all like i am working this bait i'm working the dog piss out of this bait so in the summertime post spawn it's not about throwing out there and letting it pause i'm aggressive i'm beating the crap out of it i'm being super super powerful it is powerful power fishing for sure we have what in in south carolina what is called the blue back herring spawn which is what we're going through right now blue back here and spawn and a jerkbait has become one of my favorite baits to throw for the herring spawn this time of year this is the setup this is my setup for fishing the heron spawn like i just told you when i'm fishing in the spring of the year i'm not trying to be gentle i'm not trying to make sure you know like i have a long enough pause it's aggressive it's it's like i'm out here like i'm like bruce lee with a jerkbait i'm like mike tyson you know my hands are quick you know i'm just trying to draw a comparison for you i'm being pretty aggressive with this thing i like to throw the long lick one actually this time of year i don't mind my jerk bait digging into the bottom i'm gonna be fishing it really shallow quite honestly i want it digging the bottom this time of year so you can see this is actually a hand painted one a hand painted jerk bait that i have here and um this course is painted up like a blue back here and it's got some goals it's got some pearls it's got some purple in it but a hand painted my good buddy at rainbow bates painted this guy for me here's the difference pretty much the same rod here this is just a different generation of the same rod of the pro series favorite that you'll be available this year um using an 83 to one gear ratio reel this is just this is still a lose this is a lose uh the hyper mag here but you know i got one with the pro ti one with a hyper mag no really you know deep reason for the two reels i just got a purple reel and i got a silver reel on one rod that's it just use a fast reel so you don't work yourself to death out there okay so deeper deeper diving one you know you really could throw the deeper diver all year because i want my jerkbait to get down especially where i'm at where it's pretty clear water the the bigger lipping you actually could throw you know all year just depends on where you live you want to throw the short lip one when you're trying to fish out and you want to throw the long one when you're trying to fish deep that's how you know which one to throw okay so it's not really anything deep to the side when you're gonna throw a short lip versus the deep lip you need to get deeper throw that throw the plus one all right if you need to throw it shallow or you got a grass lake and there's a lot of vegetation throw the shallow one that simple here's the thing that i have have adjusted over the years over the last few years that has made me a much more efficient jerk bait fishing fisherman especially in the spring this time of year i'm fishing fast i'm fishing aggressive i am not taking a lot of time on spots this time here i want to move move move move move fish sees your bait more likely you're going to hit it this time of year right water's warm it's in the mid 60s it's the post spawn fish are ready to eat get a bait where they are but the hard part this time of year is you have to find those little junctions that the fish have moved to so they've spawned and you know when they're spawning you know this fish scattered a little bit in every little pocket and point and a little bank on the river right but when you get to the postmod all those fish start to gather on these little post-spawn intersections and points uh high spots they get on very specific areas and so there's what i'm getting is there's a lot more dead water this time of year right so with that being said i've got to cover more water that's when the setup becomes more important because i got to preserve my body and my arm to be able to cover miles and miles and miles of water with a jerk bait when you get to the post spawn of the year because i've got to fish every point i can't pull up to a point and just tell if there's a fish there i have to fish it and i need me to fish it efficiently and quickly so i can move on to the next one and find a couple schools of fish during the day of practice braided line yes i said braided line i throw my jerkbait during the post spawn on braided line 30 pound test strike king pro grade braid is what i'm using for my jerk bait right now in may let me explain why if you've ever thrown a a hollow belly frog on mono if you've ever thrown a topwater on mono versus braid you ever notice how it's so much easier to get that bait to snap on braid versus mono if you ever tried it you can't even walk a frog with mono you can't even make it do what it's supposed to do but when you have braid the fact that it has no stretch lets you cast way out there and on a long cast especially you know i always want to throw this when it's windy and it's very hard to throw a jerk bait when it's windy which is ironic because it's the best windy day bait ever but it's a pain in the butt to throw when it's windy right so when you got braids 30 pound test braids small diameter braid [Music] i can throw that thing out there a long way okay i can i can cast it to the moon but here's the problem a lot of time when you get fluorocarbon let's say you let the wind get behind you and you do make that long cast wap one hits it out there at 300 yards dude you can't get a hook in him it's hard to fight him with braid you know i throw it out there i can cast it a lot farther and i can get that bait to get down there and i can get it down to depth quicker because there's no stretch it doesn't take as much rod and shoulder action to get the bait to dart and be erratic like it does with uh with fluorocarbon so i don't have to work as hard so i preserve my body and i can fish miles and miles and miles and miles of water with a jerk bait without ever getting tired here's definitely something else you want to think about when you're talking about throwing this setup during the spring or you know any time really it doesn't have to be the spring anytime you want that bait to be a little bit more erratic this is the thing that i really think that i really love about throwing 30 pound test braid on a dirt bait this time of the year the fish can be very active in the mornings and when you get towards the latter part of the morning in the middle of the day it can be really tough to get a bite those fish don't leave they don't leave those points they don't leave those flats they're still there they get a little bit more aware and they're hard to get them to react to things that's why jerkbait works so good but with when you're throwing it on braid you have the ability to make that bait do things and dance in ways that you just can't do it it's not possible with fluorocarbon no stretch every time i i hit that with the every pop of the rod tip that that thing is darting a different way but it's doing it so much quicker so much more erratically and so much more forcefully and quicker by the fact that this that the braid has no stretch in it that you can get better reaction bites with it that way because on a long cast i don't think we realize especially with fluorocarbon and a moderate action rod when you make a long cast you feel like you're working that bait you feel like you're just like i am kicking him in the head with it you ain't doing nothing you're not really doing nothing even though you're popping that rod tip with all you got i mean you're hitting it with everything you got in all actuality out there on the end of your cash your bait is probably going but with braid with no stretch every single bit of energy that i put into this rod and reel is transferred to my bait so even on a long cast it's hitting just as hard and darting and getting down to depth quicker with braid which can get you a few more bites heck for me if i get two or three more bites during the course of a day it's worth putting braid on if the end of the day is six eight ten hours of throwing a jerkbait all day in 20 mile an hour wind if i get four less backlash and i can cast my bait a little bit longer and save my shoulders and arms and wrists it's a win for me so consider that that's an alternative way to throw a jerk bait works really good in the summertime and the late spring when fish are really starting to feed on shad don't forget the dirt bait i got two two different setups 10 pound test fluorocarbon and 30 pound test braid two very similar setups but at the same time these guys can really be different in their approach and they allow you to do two totally different things
