[Music] hey guys double wide six and today i got a mower that's spitting oil out on the deck and uh i'm gonna compression test it leak down test it and diagnose what's up with this thing i think you're gonna like it so stick around this mueller's toro recycler 22 inch with a briggs and stratton engine on it first thing i'm going to do is compression test it luckily for me this thing has electric start compressions coming in pretty low it's about 68 so we know we don't have good compression so we need to figure out where we're losing that compression from our compression could be leaking from anywhere could be coming through the head gasket it could be coming out the exhaust valve the intake valve it could even be leaking out the crank case gasket down here so what we want to do is figure out where it's leaking and narrow it down for this customer to figure out where it's leaking from we're going to use the leak down kit we're going to leak down test this mower in order to do the leak down test properly i've got to get the piston up to top dead center so what i've done is i've clamped off the band brake so that the brake's not on the flywheel anymore and i'm gonna just kind of pull on the string i got the spark plug out and what i'm gonna do is i'm gonna put my thumb over the spark plug hole and as i pull on this string you're going to be able to feel the your thumbs either going to get sucked in or pushed out well when you find your thumb is getting pushed out and you can kind of feel it in the rope where it's becoming kind of hard to pull that's the compression stroke so once i felt my thumb pushing out and it started to get a little harder to pull i'm now in the compression stroke and what i want to do is i want to bring that piston up to top dead center now in order to do that you can carefully just take a screwdriver or something plastic if you have it drop it in that piston hole and you can just pull the rope really carefully until you get it all the way up at top dead center now a little tip for you guys is that the key way in the crankshaft is always facing the very center of the cylinder block when the engine is at top dead center so if you look underneath the mower spark plugs out you have the blade here okay and what i can do is actually adjust the blade so that the key way i can feel on here the uh which direction the keyway is on the casted uh thing that connects to the blade the blade hub so right here should be top dead center because the blade's going straight forward and back that means the key way is facing right towards my screwdriver so if i reach in the spark plug hole the piston is right there if i go past it's going back and i bring it dead 12 o'clock that's top dead center okay now we're going to do the leak down test but before i do it we're going to release the band brake so that that's off that way when we add a little air and reduce it into the cylinder nothing's going to move so i screwed the hose from the leak down tester in and i have air hooked up to the manifold we're gonna carefully hook this up there's there's no pressure out this regulator yet so right now the pressure's on zero and as i said the band brake is on so that should prevent the blade from spinning all right so what we're going to do is we're going to very slowly introduce air into the system if you go real fast 100 psi or whatever what you're going to end up having happen is you're going to force the piston down and then it's not going to be on top dead center so i'm slowly introducing some air and as you can see i have it at about 15 psi and i actually hear the air leaking so let's take a look at the mower now the air could be coming out the exhaust but i don't hear it coming out the exhaust it could be coming out the intake like if the intake valve isn't closing so we have no air here and uh the i don't see any like air or hear any air coming out the crank case or the head gasket and i didn't see any oil there um the oil was just shooting out on the deck on this thing so uh where's the air coming out we're gonna walk around and we're gonna actually check the crank case and if you listen i don't know if you guys can hear that what's happening there is that the air is going past the piston and it's going into the crankcase and it's coming out the oil dipstick so that's a sign that we either have a broken ring or we have internal wear on the piston cylinder and it's letting air get past it so uh this this engine is not worth fixing there's a couple things that can cause oil to actually spit out one thing is you can have a really clogged air filter which we don't have i actually put a new one on here because it was a little bit dirty and the other thing um that can cause it could be a leak in your crank case so where the gasket is here if that's sucking air that'll cause uh a leak as well and or sorry that'll cause oil to squirt out the muffler and if you had the mower tipped over so you like stored it or moved it maybe uh oil can either get into the carburetor or fill up saturate that air filter and cause the same type of effect this mower would run for about 10 minutes it wouldn't smoke too bad it would start pretty easy but after about 10 minutes it would get hot and it would just squirt oil out on the deck all right guys i'm double wide six and hopefully you found this video pretty helpful if you did give it a thumbs up give me a comment down below if you're not a subscriber think about subscribing i also put links to the equipment i used in this video down below take care everyone and have a good one
