Spirited Away & Howl's Moving Castle are Related! Film Studies Analysis

in my last miyazaki video i theorize that sophie actually became a half-demon and then later a witch and i'd like to expand on that idea today by connecting Howl's Moving Castle to spirited away let me start out by saying that I realize House Moving Castle started as a book but the book is a lot different from the Studio Ghibli movie sort of like how The Hunchback of Notre Dom as a book is not really comparable to the Disney movie so even though spirited away and Howl's Moving Castle didn't start off in the same universe I believe that the Miyazaki versions of these films can be connected and so this is Studio Ghibli's universe and they are the common factor here so timeline wise it feels safe to assume that spirited away is set in the 90s maybe the early 2000s which should be well after Howl's Moving Castle takes place house is a little harder to date since it's in the Steampunk magic using alternate reality but I get a late 1800s Early 1900s vibe from the aesthetics of the film which means it's a fair estimate to say that spirited away is set after Howl's Moving Castle and if we can make that assumption then I'd like to claim that sophie is you Baba to try and prove my case let's look at their attire old lady Sophie wears a dress that's nearly identical to you Baba's and as Sophie ages we see that her head enlarged ins thickens I'm not sure if there's a proper term for that type of facial spread but it stands to reason that if sophie had an elongated life span as a witch like the Witch of the waste had then Sophie's face would keep growing as she kept aging we know that Sophie doesn't think she's pretty and she doesn't care about what she looks like so I doubt she'd ever enchant herself to appear younger which means over time Sophie's head could expand to the size of you Baba's also keep in mind that sophie worked in Howl's Moving Castle and that job involved running her own business Sophie ran her father's hat shop howl asked her to open a flower shop and she helped mark will run the magical apothecary after Sophie becomes a witch and gets more acquainted with magical and godly beans running a bathhouse for spirits in her old age doesn't seem that far-fetched not to mention no one who works for the bathhouse gets to keep the real name while it's unclear whether you baba is the owner or just another employee being a type of slave to working for the bathhouse gives me adequate cause to believe that Sofie changed her name when she began working there next let's chat about no face it seems like no faces a pretty rare creature because no one in the bathhouse has a clue that he's dangerous yet when you Baba finds no face she not only recognizes what he is she's angry and repulsed by his whole species that reaction always seemed unreasonable to me because no face is a pretty nice creature and just wants to make friends I mean you certainly don't want to entertain someone that's gonna eat your guests and staff members but you Baba's automatic hatred of no-face always struck me as strange then I rewatched Howl's Moving Castle and notice that the wit of the waste and Madame Solomon used beans that appear very similar to no face even to the point of covering their non faces with masks and because Sophie is harassed and attacked by these creatures repeatedly in the film she develops a very negative opinion of them quickly an opinion that carried over for decades to come you Baba also keeps a raven like demon close to her and how himself had a demonic Raven form but I'm sure you're asking where is Howlin spirited away well you've got me there the best I can figure is that how somehow passed away which would also harden Sophie's personality making her more apt to turn into the grumpy you Baba actually you Baba's baby is also weird since you Baba is so old it's bizarre that she has a baby so I wonder if that baby was Sophie's child with howl and a grieving Sophie cursed him to never grow up and never leave her huh that piece kind of falls right into place okay stop writing angry comments I haven't forgotten that you Baba had a sister is amoeba but isn't that twin really off - I know twins my own father is a twin and most twins do not dress alike as a dolt let alone have the same hair jewelry and makeup it's also unlikely that they would develop the same mole or cysts in the same spot on their forehead I suspect that once you Baba started working at the bathhouse she realized that she'd start to forget things like her real name it's the same curse that trapped all the other employees at the bathhouse so to keep from completely losing herself you Baba split herself in two and put all of her love her memories of how and so forth into the niba to live safely down the road she could not bear to part with her baby so she kept him close but through the niba Sofie could save a part of her old self yeah I might be overthinking it but that's literally my job well that's all I have for now but this video is not quite over yet we're expanding so I have to plug our other channels total we have the fangirl dealing primarily with movies and shows say hello goodbye gaming and the family family vlogs links are in the description and we would love to see you at all three channels ok I think that's it so thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed enough to like subscribe and share this video we have tons of material across our various channels that you are fully encouraged to go check out and if somehow you can't get enough of me please connect with me on instagram at say hallo goodbye or twitter at the underscore family
