Special tribute to Brooks Robinson

this is a big day royalty there today as a hero has an opportunity to honor his idol ya Cal Ripkin named his 88th youth field after everybody's hero Brooks Robinson Eddie at first Billy at second junior at Short Brooks at third you don't need an outfield nice clean not that dangerous look at this place the new Brooks Robinson field at Frederick Douglass High School what's this field me alright cuz I came right from nothing you can't help but notice down the right-field line the houses now if that backdrop doesn't remind you of 33rd Street where Cal roamed as a kid and like all of us pretended to be number 5 I had Brooke see everything whatever whatever came out bobblehead dolls I used to pop it on the top of the head a little while know what no Brooke see was my guy and if you're counting that's two statues two roads thousands of kids named after Brooks that's a pretty good life that's not another Gus Tree on us at one time when he played it here he got a road and he asked me well how many roads you have named after you I said none Gus now I got to thank you but let's talk about the impact this place will have on West Baltimore this field is a game changer this is the most important development West Baltimore that I know of for quite a while we have lost target Marshalls payless shoes a lot of other stores in the last year too and it's not just about baseball this is a medium to get kids to get into other positive things you said you can hit it out of here I think I can still hit it out of here I don't think I could I like deep soon though I like the job in DC I pull it and it reminded so much of my dad Brooks got emotional talking about his dad and playing catch and you know about Cal senior and his role in raising Baltimore his baseball family but now two manners will raise men and women to play this great game why do you do things that you did off the field it just came natural for me to kind of give back what I could do that to the city so cut the orange ribbon and let's play finally a backstop that won't be empty when spring rolls back around and if we get the kids saying well when they come out it means they're gonna want to spend time here and not want to spend time somewhere else so we know we're doing the right thing under dad's name
