council president for the class of 2021. on behalf of myself and my peers i would like to welcome each and every one of you to the 135th commencement of south lyon high school this year has been chaotic and full of sudden changes with virtual schooling coming in and out of our lives it has really shown us the importance of the support system i know every single student has someone that they attribute their success to whether it be a parent friend sibling or teacher someone in each student's life has pushed them to reach this moment i personally would like to thank my parents sister friends and especially my teachers for believing in me i would like to thank my classmates for always being able to make each other laugh especially during this past year and helping us to become the people that we are today i would like to encourage my peers to acknowledge not only their own sacrifices but the sacrifices that those around us made to ensure that we reach this point thank you everyone for being here today thank you for pushing through the last four years and leaving this school behind with a legacy that we can all be proud of i know you will all do great things i wish you the best of luck in all of your future endeavors thank you good afternoon staff teachers administrators fellow board members families most importantly our class of 2021 graduates i'm craig dashner and i'm the president of the south lyon community schools board of education i have the privilege of saying a few words today as you complete one of the major milestones in your life but don't worry i'll try to keep my marks relatively short for all our benefit there are many cliches that are often said about graduation but instead of perpetuating that cycle i'd rather recap your journey that started 13 years ago walking into kindergarten with your name and your bus number pinned to your shirt from the shared photos i've seen over the past couple weeks many who had hannah montana shirts bags or lunch boxes with you that day getting on that bus and walking into school was probably the biggest thing you had done in your life many things were done to make the school a comfortable place for you but you want some place new someplace big but not really knowing what was in front of you but you quickly became comfortable with the building the teachers the friends and the routine what you did not know is you joined a community and became an integral part of it it was likely the biggest community you were involved in in your life before you knew it you were in fifth grade the school felt small now but you own the playground but what you may not have realized is that you grew and held a lot of responsibility in that elementary school community some of you took care of the u.s flag some did announcements some were bus monitors some led the younger students from the classes to the buses some were hall monitors and safeties you had a big part in keeping your community safe and efficient and likely did not even realize the responsibility you had then just like that fifth grade was over it was time for middle school now that was a big deal you were going to be in a two-story building more than a thousand students no more deaths the crazy concept of switching classes having six teachers letter grades no recess lockers with combinations and having only a few minutes to get all the way to the other corner of the school and detention this was a new community a bigger community with challenges and new opportunities you had a new freedom you didn't have to line up and walk on a line to go someplace but you had more responsibility you had to manage your time to get to the bathroom your locker chat with a few friends and still make it to class on time your homework was now a big part of your grade and it was up to you to get it done get it turned in and hopefully have your name on it your community expected more of you you met some new friends from different areas developed some new interests and with some perseverance you all made it through middle school then came high school there was more going on and plenty to do theater music sports all kinds of clubs just hanging out with your friends you had classes with students in other grades and the lunchroom wasn't all called the commons and it wasn't really a room you were in a new community there were a lot of members from your last community but there were also many new members it was another change but by now you were used to change you adapted made more new friends found more new interests this community was different you had more autonomy more responsibility and it might have felt like you were part of something bigger four short years later here we are i don't think i really needed to recap your school career to you but i think it's important to reflect on what you have done what you have accomplished and what you've learned along the way it is also important to understand the communities that you were a part of i'm sure that many you think about graduating and missing some parts of your high school routine and your friends as you go on to your next adventure in reality it's just another change in your life a new community much like the progression of your education every step you complete your community gets a little bit bigger and your place and it gets bigger too my generation and my parents generation are slowly handing our community our state and our country over to the next generation your generation every year someone from my generation stands on a stage like this delivers a hopeful message and symbolically hands the keys over to you you're adults now some of you may go out on your own some of you may go to college and some may not know what is next for them but you are all at the starting point to a new journey a journey that does not start with your names pinned to your shirt this time the first step into adult life is like kindergarten all over again you may have an idea of what lies ahead or you may not some of you may end up exactly where you think you're going others may wander for a while before determining what is right for you some of you may make a decision that ultimately doesn't feel right but this time you get to change your mind you get to plot a new course or maybe even turn around completely and start all over again this will be the theme as you move forward in your life after thirteen and a half years of school you are armed with the power and skills to be an important part of your next community and to make it better but just like our community our school community diversity is key diversity generates a lot of discussion lately but it's simply defined as different or a variety a community needs variety as much as our school needs it a community needs creativity logic empathy compassion hard work thoughtfulness planning generosity restraint visionaries the wisdom that comes with age and the energy that comes with youth for a community to be successful all those different traits must come together to find the middle ground that provides something for everyone we must listen to each other learn from each other and work together to do great things for our future in a minute i'll sit back and watch as each of you cross the stage and are handed a diploma some of you will march across the stage with confidence some with comfort some with apprehension and some with relief but you will all do it i expect that as you take the big step into your adult life you'll have many of the same feelings your entire life up to now has prepared you for what is ahead i along with the rest of the members of the board of education congratulate each one of you wish you the best and we are excited to see what you do with our future you did it and the keys are yours thank [Applause] you [Music] [Music] memories to teach me to see the beauty memories to teach me to see the beauty [Music] you said you'd call me you said you'd come for me in times of ease and now i need you and now i need you [Music] is you've gone and left me there's been so little beauty [Music] [Music] because i am sitting here to teach me to see the beauty of the world through my own eyes because i am sitting here wanting memories to teach me to see the beauty in the world through my own eyes i think all the things that made me feel so wonderful when i was young i think all the things that made me laugh maybe i think on the things that made me grow into a people of pride think on these things [Music] to see the beauty [Music] hello [Music] who i am [Music] and i am sitting here [Music] new memories to teach me to see the [Music] beauty do good evening everyone my name is kade person and welcome to the south lyon high school class of 2021 graduation ceremony or is it a momentous celebration a sad farewell perhaps a new beginning depending on your high school experience you might give this day a unique meaning if you are an honorable student a principal's list recipient a member of student council or the national honor society or an ap calculus survivor today might be a day of joy and satisfaction or maybe you just barely scratched out that last credit in either case you should be incredibly proud of your accomplishments now if you are a student athlete today we celebrate your athletic achievements as we gather in the same stadium where many of you competed today is also a farewell we thank our favorite teachers spend time with our families share cherished memories with our friends and say a final goodbye to the five-star bathrooms of south lyon high another perspective might view today as the first page of a brand new chapter all things considered today's gathering is significant to each and every one of us personally i believe that today is an opportunity for me to stand in front of everyone and rant about these last four years for starters can we talk about that student parking lot the amount of times i have witnessed a near accident is concerning and i'm honestly scared how some of you even passed your driver's test but in all seriousness i am filled with immense gratitude to be standing with you today celebrating all that we have accomplished during these past four years today is truly an affirmation that we can succeed in the fall of 2017 i walked into these doors a nervous quiet freshman i was awkward abnormally long and too scrawny to do the push-ups in gym class i didn't really know who i was or where i fit in but i eventually found my footing as a sophomore that year i walked this field in the rain as a member of the homecoming court after a relaxing summer break i began my junior year and boy was it stressful in addition to sat prep i took my first ap classes that year which initiated a series of late nights filled with khan academy videos quizless flash cards oreo cookies and tears for two and a half years this was my high school experience thinking back on it now i wouldn't change much besides eating a few too many oreos and occasionally wanting to throw my ap chem binder across the room i was pretty happy i made new friends joined some clubs and learned how to procrastinate like a pro however on march 13th 2020 everything changed at first we were excited that our spring break was going to be extended by three weeks we went on with our day and when the final bell rang we told our friends that we would see them soon little did we know that a year later we would be using words like social distancing in our daily vocabulary and having to wear masks at graduation our senior year is supposed to be special in a normal year we would be united suffering from senioritis and embracing these last few moments together although senioritis still spread like wildfire the pandemic took our senior year down an unexpected path despite the overwhelming odds here we are dressed in navy blue gowns surrounded by our loved ones about to graduate high school in this past year we learned to adapt we learned how to interact with our family and friends in a virtual environment unable to see them face to face some of us still don't know how to get our cameras to work but for the most part we figured out how to navigate distance learning we applied and got accepted to college we continued to participate in clubs finding unique ways to conduct meetings host events and volunteer in our community we even got to have a student staff kickball game a senior walkout and a beautiful prom and i'd also like to give a shout out to the softball team for the win today [Applause] all this although this past year presented us with scores of challenges we persevered and came out the other end stronger than before failure seemed inevitable but through resilience persistence and agility we triumphs today we gather to honor our success we have many victories to applaud stories to tell and memories to retrace and i'm beyond grateful to have the opportunity to share this incred incredible moment with you all today as we celebrate the wins in spite of the losses it's important that we thank everyone who helped guide us through this crazy senior year i'd like to thank my family whose love and support are constant reminders to keep pushing forward i'd also like to thank my teachers who made countless sacrifices for me and my peers thank you to senora mania my spanish teacher for three years who took the time to get to know me as more than just a student thank you to mrs zuzo who went out of her way to make goodie bags for all of us taking that terrible ap calc exam and i'd like to give a special thanks to mr stroud my world studies teacher who never failed to make me feel welcome in his classroom and lastly i'd like to thank all the administrators mr brennan mr turney mrs hoffman and mrs t mr teagan for everything they have done to make this day possible as you walk out of the stadium tonight i hope you remember these words take pride in your growth cherish the memories you have made and trust that things will get better if the past year has taught us anything it's that tomorrow is unknown we never know when a one in a million event is going to take place so let's live in the present each one of us has accomplished something incredible so today let's savor this moment and celebrate this unforgettable journey congratulations class of 2021 we succeeded hello everyone my name is lucy salvatore and i'm the student council vice president this year and i'm aiden mccusker the secretary and i'm isabella campbell senior executive member public relations this past year has been extremely difficult for us as seniors as most of the family members here today know our senior year is a time when we want to be off with our friends our friends become like our family and time spent together is increasingly meaningful due to covet 19 the amount of time we've gotten to spend with our friends this year was extremely less than anyone could have hoped for what ended up bringing us together was the ability to see each other outdoors outside time became crucial and something so small ended up becoming monumental in our time together to give back to our school our senior gift is going to be improving the outdoor patio here at south lyon high school so that the future classes can embrace the importance of outdoor times with their other classmates thank you hello parents staff teachers and everyone watching the stream on the live transmission including my family in mexico lost abuelos my name is isabella kuriascovel like many of you i used to think that like a coloring book the world was filled with all kinds of predictable lines shapes and edges for years i lived with the simplistic mindset as if there were lines set that were meant to be filled as the class of 2021 we had all kinds of hopes and expectations as to what our senior year was supposed to look like these lines set expectations these expectations set lines that we thought we had to fill these lines had been drawn years ago we traced them since our first day of kindergarten we shaded them in going to camp in fifth grade we sketched them during our eighth grade dance and our eighth grade dc trip we colored them with our first high school football games sports seasons homecomings and tailgates the coronavirus pandemic forced change in all aspects of our lives our coloring pages were ripped out and the shapes edges and lines that we had become accustomed to color within were lost our phones were constantly blowing up with google classroom notifications and we had to stress about whether or not our microphone was muted when we went to the bathroom the senior rail became a hazardous area our lunch tables covered with red spots where we were absolutely not allowed to sit and do not even get me started about having to park in the way back of the parking lot on the first in-person day of my senior year our sports season shortened our school environments shifted we did not get the year that we expected as the year went on we struggled to find and fill those old lines we yearn for the simpler and more predictable times we pushed to return back to normality after all that's all we had ever known however this year we learned how to step out of that coloring book mindset when we came back to school 100 in march students returned with a high incentive empathy we began working together with more energy and more enthusiasm our social interactions held more value than they ever did before after almost exactly one long year we were back and better than ever the administration and student council organized events that we didn't even think would happen this year the yearbook staff put together an amazing addition our golf team won the state championship our football team went to districts our swim soccer lacrosse and softball teams became lvc champions theater composed organized and performed an entire musical production and we strengthened and explored student-low organizations and clubs like sl future med bright futures club and the gsa and last week we all came together to dance the night away at our senior prom our achievements from the last year were not measured by sat or act scores in fact what we learn cannot be measured on a grade scale i used to think that like a coloring book the world was filled with all kinds of different lines shapes and edges however i soon realized i was mistaken we were not dealing with a coloring book but a blank space a canvas our challenges were not black stains or mistakes but blots of color that made us stand out from the rest this situation that we once considered so limiting afforded us with a brand new color palette that we had simply not yet learned to use the colors in our new palette were colors of colors of patience flexibility empathy and endurance we learned patience through our parents having us all at home constantly checking if we were awake during our classes keeping the fridge stocked with the food for millions to the millions of snacks that we ate during class thank you mom and dad gracias mama papa we learned flexibility through the changes in our schedules whether we were quarantined learning virtually or in person we learned empathy through our teachers mentors counselors coaches and staff who looked for ways to help us not only in our assignments in our sports but also in times of hardship they understood our struggle as they were struggling in their own ways as well thank you all and after all we learn endurance because you would not be sitting here today waiting to move your tassel to your left had you not overcome all of your personal challenges i hope you walk across this stage knowing that there is value in your experience and there is value in the endeavors that you have overcome it is crucial that you immerse yourself in the possibilities that await you saturating yourself and the colors of your brand new color palette rather than struggling to fill lines you must look past them and reach towards the canvas spreading colors across your masterpieces soaking ink into your fabric the world is an art show why should we limit ourselves to coloring books when we could fill galleries class of 2021 we did it thank you [Music] so each day i live i want to be a day to give the best of me i'm only one but not alone my finest day his yet unknown i broke my heart for every gain to taste the sweet i faced the pain i rise and fall yeah through it all this much remains i want one moment in a time when i'm more than i thought i could be when all my dreams are a heart beat away and the answers are all up to me give me one moment in a time when i'm erasing with destiny than in that one moment of time i will feel i will feel eternity i've lived to be the very best i rise and fall no time for less i played the plans now lay the chance here in my hands i want one moment in a time when i'm more than i thought i could be when all of my dreams are a heart beat away and the answers are all love to me give me one moment in a time when i'm erasing with destiny then in that one moment of time [Music] [Music] for a lifetime can you feel that one moment in time make it shine give me one moment in a time when i'm more than i thought i could be [Applause] when all of my dreams are a heart beat away and the answers are all off to me give me one moment in a time when i'm erasing with destiny then in that one moment of time i will be i will be i will be friends i will be friends [Applause] i'm making a mental note not to follow chloe next time i give a speech thank you to all our performers today and speakers have done a phenomenal job makes me very proud the class of 2021 represents the 135th graduating class of south lyon community schools many of your teachers counselors and administrators are here to celebrate your accomplishment and bid you a fine farewell this field is filled with family members and friends who have endured the heat and potential storms to share this moment with you this is truly a fantastic moment that marks the combination of 13 years of learning and growth yet amidst all the positivity of today as i was reflecting on the memories over the past year for this class i kept getting drawn into the sense of loss i didn't want to be that i didn't want that to be the focus of this last celebration but it is simply impossible to ignore it is true that there were a lot of lost opportunities for the seniors this year the seniors lost out on the friday night football games and themes there is the canceled homecoming dance spirit week plays band performances and concerts you missed your teachers your classmates and you even miss taking your midterm and final exams maybe a little bit through quarantines a lot of you even missed out on the chance to attend school or play the sport you love we can all agree that is a lot to miss out on however i think in focusing on the losses the seniors and the rest of us we're sometimes guilty of overlooking the gains until recently i think i might have been guilty of it as well but a couple of moments over the last month or so really gave me some perspective on how much has actually been gained by this class we had a student forum in the lecture hall to discuss some of the student concerns and just get some general insight on the past year one of the key concerns that kept coming up from the seniors was the loss of learning what was going to happen when they went to college and they were behind did they have holes in their education that would be exposed what about the content they missed the curriculum that wasn't covered there was a genuine concern that they simply weren't going to be able to handle the college experience and even beyond these walls many within our local community along with pundits in the media have discussed the impact of covid on students education moving forward it's very easy to get caught up in the narrative loss and focus on what was missed however every experience is a lesson and every loss is a gain in fact i would argue your educational experiences over the last couple of years have more than prepared you for college and the workforce ability to learn over different learning platforms check ability to be flexible in your thinking and adapt to a changing environment check ability to be an independent learner check ability to overcome obstacles and persevere in the face of a difficult situation definitely a check yes this coveteer is tough but remember you are not defined by your circumstances you are defined by your reaction to them you have gained the ability to be flexible independent creative thinkers which by the way is exactly what employers and colleges are looking for so alleviate those fears and know that your high school experience has more than prepared you to take on the new challenges in the classroom as well as the constantly changing job environment shifting gears a little we hosted prom last weekend i thought it was an incredible experience we changed things up a little by having it outside with food trucks and tents and it was a beautiful night all around as the students were leaving we always say our goodbyes before they get in their cars or limos and leave for the night the first couple of students were really nice and thanked us for the experience and for putting it on then the next couple of students did the same thing saying they had a really great time and really thanked us and for the time and effort that this must have taken and the same scene played out as the students left each one genuinely thanking the chaperones and expressing their appreciation now this is not entirely normal i love our students and as a rule they are extremely polite but thanking the chaperones organizers and administrators is not normally a high priority as they're leaving to go do whatever they do after prompt it struck me that our seniors have gained a sense of perspective and appreciation when you lose events and then get a chance to experience those same events you have a newfound appreciation for those moments our seniors showed a profound sense of gratitude this carried over to the senior gathering on the last day and to the senior walkout some years there are a group of seniors out there in the morning but to be honest sometimes it doesn't necessarily represent our entire senior class this year we had over 200 seniors present for that last day with everyone coming together to celebrate mind you they didn't even have school that day there was no requirement to come to school except to watch the video and walk out yet the majority of the class was there genuinely appreciating the moment and the chance to come together the ability to not take anything for granted and show genuine appreciation for the opportunities you have will allow you to always find joy in your lives and that is no small feat perhaps the connection students showed at the senior breakfast stem from how much our students have seen our staff go out of their way to value the relationships in the classroom when we met with the student forum again we asked the students to provide examples of support they were given during the school year the students could answer any way they chose but just simply had to reflect on ways they felt supported it struck me that not a single response dealt with the teacher offering multiple makeup tests providing extra time in an assignment or assigning less homework i know our staff did those things and did a great job of adapting and accommodating lessons to ensure students would be successful however the students focus kept coming back to relationships and connections they told stories of staff members pulling them aside and asking how they were doing and how much that meant to them one student told of having an entire class session allowing an event about covet and the teacher taking the time to let every single student express their feelings another mentioned their teacher taking the time to email them and just check in and say hey how you doing i'm worried about you every example involved an empathetic teacher or fellow student or they talked about how personal connection or relationship with a staff member kept them engaged in that class students were also very open and honest about their issues with mental health how difficult it was for them being isolated and how much of a difference one caring person could make ultimately it wasn't about the curriculum we provided it was about the connections we made with our students i'm certainly not minimizing the importance of the curriculum but the ability to look out for our students and provide the emotional support that they needed is what was truly important in that moment i think our senior class has gained powerful insight into the importance of making connections and the power of being empathetic and supportive towards others hopefully we all gained a little perspective on what our students need as well our seniors missed out on some events and moments there is no doubt about that however i will always look at this class as the one that came out of our covert environment stronger than they went in you face unprecedented changes and obstacles stood tall and worked to find solutions to the problems you faced we can't go to school okay we'll learn google classroom and submit everything electronically we can't do a staff volleyball game okay we'll have a kickball game outside we can't have prom indoors okay we'll get some food trucks some tents and we'll make it happen seniors i want to i want you to know that your flexibility adaptability perseverance and genuine empathy for your fellow classmates will serve you well in the future these skills will allow you to experience success in the classroom at your place of work and in your future relationships i'm very proud of all of you and look forward to watching you continue to overcome any obstacles placed in your path thank you [Music] oh [Music] so [Music] um
