after a bad breakup a few years ago I decided it was time to do something radical to change my life you see I was tired of being predictable I was tired of being a third shift factory worker hell I was tired of always being overlooked for raises for long term commitments for everything I had tried to change my life in the past and always failed but this time it would work until that spring I had never been out of state never since we Rebecca left me for what's-his-name trust-fund boy I'd always been dwelling on ways to escape my dreary existence and one day I was getting ready for work and my email notification sounded on my phone see the world and get paid to do it kitchen manager needed for the carpe diem interesting there were a few details in the ad about the job but it gave to phone numbers one toll-free and one for locals in California to call there was also a website featuring more contact information videos of happy crew members sailing on the open seas families on the cruise having wonderful meals together it was enough to convince me to try it but still I held off I called for more information the overly cheerful woman I spoke to took all my pertinent information and sent me an application via email and the last question I had for her involved my compensation while working on the carpe diem this f me was going to make a minimum of three thousand dollars for each seven-day cruise she told me oh man my jaw unhinged and the air was suddenly very thin that was more than I made in a whole month of working 40-hour weeks in the factory I asked again and to be sure I hadn't misunderstood and laughing she told me again three thousand dollars for each seven-day cruise and there was a bonus for the longer cruises if the cruise was set for a month I would receive $15,000 plus a $2,500 bonus for remaining in my position and that's C for the duration and I must say and when I hung up the phone I was a static I hadn't been so happy in years it looked like my life was finally going to turn around things had to get better from here at 32 I set off on my first trip away from my little neck of the woods in Tennessee I drove to the airport and boarded a plane headed for California setting off on an adventure that would change my life forever in ways I never could have imagined at the time the kitchen manager position was perfect for me Sadie and Tony ran breakfast and Rob and I ran the kitchen the rest of the time we had free reign as long as we followed the menu set forth by the bosses halfway through my second month long voyage Sadie from the breakfast crew came to me shortly after lunch and wanted to speak to me privately now up until this time I not considered Sadie a flighty or flaky person but that day I began to worry that maybe she was suffering from some sort of mental break Sadie's main job was breakfast in the kitchen but in the afternoons she helped with duties on the sleeper deck while cleaning one gentleman's quarters she had come across the cult paraphernalia and said she had scoffed at the ridiculousness of those beliefs and put it out of her mind then she showed me a piece of paper she'd taken from that same man's journal the day before and I scolded her she pushed the paper in my hand her eyes frightened and wide insisting that I read it for myself then she told me that she was leaving her post at the next port she was getting off the boat and not getting back on it now had never been superstitious I didn't believe in magic but something about Sadie's reaction to this paper gave me pause I didn't like the idea of being out to sea with a man who might be off his rocker maybe he was murder robber and rapist and that's what made me finally read the piece of paper I read it three times and then I laughed hysterically I laughed hard and long it had been nothing more than writings about mermaids receiving the writing of some man's fantasy story you know a made-up thing fiction I opened on my desk single drawer and I placed the paper inside mermaids that frightened Sadie that badly unbelievable the mermaids of the story tidbit weren't like the cartoon mermaids who were all dainty and lovely but still who believed in them anymore and certainly not me they were right up there with leprechauns the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus in my mind while we were working I told rob about the incident and he had a good laugh too we had lots of fun with it that evening laughing sometimes until we both cried then the first two passengers went missing the next morning Sadie locked herself in her room refusing to come out then another passenger disappeared and everyone on board found out there was a panic that rolled through the passengers like a tidal wave washing away good sense and good judgment the yacht turned for land and was met by the Coast Guard who searched the entire ship we were stuck for hours while they did so and afterward they instructed the captain to dock immediately the cruise was over even though security was on high alert the next morning brought the terrible news of five more missing passengers and no one had heard or seen anything now I was seriously freaked out by midday when we learned of yet another missing person where the hell were they all going no one was found in the water several hours passed as the Coast Guard secured the yacht this time leaving a team on board to accompany us the land they set out a special team to search the surrounding water with special equipment as well but that night I woke up hungry and thirsty making my way down the tight corridor to the kitchen I was questioned by the boat security guy wielding a gun and finally I was allowed to pass after a sandwich in two bottles of water I debated on going back to my room I really didn't feel like going through the Spanish Inquisition again while having a gun pointed at my chest though my tiny office had never looked so inviting there was a really uncomfortable cushioned chair in front of my desk that would do I decided on staying there with the door closed i sat in the chair and propped my feet on the desk surprisingly enough I was falling asleep only after a few minutes but then the violent tipping of the yacht tossed me sideways into the floor the next more my arms and legs were asleep dead useless groaning I rolled to my back and a yacht tipped in the other direction slowly I regained use of my limbs and struggled to my feet there wasn't supposed to be rough weather for the duration of this voyage but the yaw kept tipping as if it were being tossed on a rough sea the gun-happy security guy was absent as I went into the corridor door stood open and moved with the swing of the ship the entire lower deck had an odd abandoned feel to it as I passed through thinking another passenger had gone missing I hurried up another deck and started for the outside door when I realized everything was very quiet unnerving ly quiet and empty no one stood on the main deck of the ship I yelled down the hallway for anyone and no one answered the only sound was the creaking of open doors being moved by the increasingly violent movements of the ship chill ran up my spine where the [ __ ] was everybody the Coast Guard had loaded them up onto a boat and taken them on to port maybe I rushed outside and saw that a Coast Guard ship was indeed tethered to ours but no one was on its decks either and I couldn't see anyone through its many windows what I didn't notice was that the yacht was sitting on the water at a slant the bow was zipping even farther into the water and panic sunk it's yellow talons into my brain I ran to go find a lifeboat or a lifejacket whatever I could I was completely alone in the middle of the sea I didn't even know exactly where by them because we had been rerouted toward land early and our yacht was sinking the lifeboat was the kind that you yanked the cord in itself inflates it was meant for only a few people so surely I'd be okay alone my cellphone was back in my room and I didn't dare run back for it the bow was even lower into the water and as the ocean slapped against the hull the water now rushed over the deck that water would flow the lower level soon and I would be trapped if I was down there if I could get to the Coast Guard ship I'd be fine I could radio for help first order of business was getting off the carpe diem before it went under working up a good deal of bravery I moved toward the sinking ship and jumped into the water with my inflated lifeboat laughing because I made it I paddled toward the Coast Guard ship it was still tethered to the carpe diem there was no way to board the ship from the facing side so I paddled toward the back and it turned out there was no weight to board at all if the tether had been loose I could have at least tried the climate but it wasn't and I couldn't I was stuck in a little lifeboat bobbing on the water totally at its mercy the movement of the water would push me away from the ships and I'd led it for a while then I paddled back to the ships and this continued until dusk I was too tired to panic by then I was hungry and thirsty too I not taking time to grab food or water only thinking about getting off the sinking boat which was still amazingly above water barely but still above water lying on my back I stared up at the Stars and hope someone would come soon to check on the Coast Guard ship those things couldn't go abandoned and nobody would notice right sleep came too easily and I drifted off several times each time waking with a start as the lifeboat was jerked violently to the side and away from the ship I leaned over the side and I began to paddle back to the ships and my paddle hit something under the water I froze there shouldn't be anything there except water my first thought was shark followed by dead body is that where the missing passengers had ended up after a few minutes of thinking curiosity piqued and no shark fins in sight I put the paddle back in the water and searched around for whatever I'd hit before and I skimmed something solid again but it didn't feel dead it moved under my paddle it moved against it and I let go of the paddle it floated two feet from me and I reached for it whatever was in the water nudged the paddle and surfaced enough for me to see that it had long blackish hair and bony spines along its body the paddle was duly forgotten there was another in the lifeboat and I tried to convince myself that what I just seen was a figment of my imagination a stress-induced hallucination but my brain was having none of that I knew what it was and I watched as a surfaced again just barely enough for me to see the same features as before holding my breath I moved to the center of my little inflatable on my knees and I kept an eye on the thing as it rolled and broke the surface enough to tease my mind but never enough to fully satisfy me that it was what my heart already knew it was a mermaid just like the ones the man had written about a series of guttural clicking sounds cropped up behind me and I turned to see that there were three of those creatures undulating and keeping their torsos far enough out of the water for me to see that they were indeed the creatures described on piece of paper Sadie had handed to me they weren't looking at me with their bulging liquid black eyes but at the ones swimming alone on the other side of me they seemed to be urging it on to some action one silently moved to the edge of the inflatable it was looking directly at me the human ash face sneering its sharp little teeth glinting orange in the last rays of the dying Sun I raised the paddle to defend myself the mermaids tail long and thin full of tiny spikes at the end darted forward and ripped the hole in the lifeboat and he looked at the other creature again they communicated in that clicking and gurgling language as I frantically tried to stop the inflatable from sinking the three backed away as I struggled there was no use the lifeboat was going to sink much quicker than the yacht the lone creature moved closer to me and the water started lapping over the deflated sides of my lifeboat the three disappeared under the water in that weird silent way they had of swimming diving surfacing and then it was just me in the single creature it moved close enough to push the side of the inflatable underwater and I hit it with the paddle a good whack to the head the creature screamed backed away and then went under the oily black surface of the water thinking that I had wounded it badly enough to secure my escape I started swimming for the tether between the ships the carpe diem had sunk far enough that I could perhaps reach it and climb to the Coast Guard ship as I stretched up for the tether something bumped my ankle hard enough to tip me away from the tether something wrapped around my foot again and began to drag me under struggling I kicked at the thing and the tether remained just out of my reach as the creature pulled me under it's arms wrapped around my hips I struggled harder to get away and seawater filled my mouth I was going to drown out there in the middle of nowhere in the middle of a full-blown panic I tried to put my fingers through the creatures eyes its grip loosened and I kicked at it hard enough that it from the whole of the yacht and I slammed it to the whole of the other ship coughing up water I'd reach for the tether again the creature stayed under the surface and moved toward me again using the ship's hull for leverage I waited until just before it could grab me again and I pushed off aiming for shoulders I kicked down as his torso passed under me and it gave me just enough lift to finally reach the tether now I can't remember exactly how but I did get aboard that Coast Guard ship I just that I had the tether in my hand one moment and I was standing on the deck seemingly a heartbeat later I never been so terrified in my entire life I looked over the side and I saw the creature cresting in the water it swam the circumference of the ship stopping at intervals to look up at me I knew I wasn't safe all those people disappeared from the out somehow so the creatures had to have found a way onto the ships I ran to the radio room and I called out for rescue when asked why I was communicating from a Coast Guard ship I stammered that everybody was gone and I was from the carpe diem they told me to hold steady and remain calm as if that were possible they didn't know about these creatures swimming around the ship trying to kill me in the dark I watched the waters around the ship as more the creatures join the solitary creature the night was filled with that terrible clicking gurgling language soon I'd heard scratching noises at the hole the creatures were helping toss one of the smaller mermaids up towards the deck and the scratching was from the creature sliding back into the water when it didn't reach the deck and finally in the distance I heard the rotors of a helicopter beating the air it was the rescue team and not a moment too soon there was a loud squelching splat as one of the creatures landed on the deck I ran and Saad has slammed the door ran up the steps into the top level and shut myself in the square glass cubicle with the communication equipment the squelching dragging sounds from the deck grew louder a sound like a wet hand drawn down glass sounded directly behind me and I couldn't turn to face it I kept my eye on the light from the chopper hoping against hope they got to me before those things did the searchlight from the chopper cut through the night like the sword of st. Michael and ran those creatures back into the water the team carried me out onto the deck and into the chopper as we lifted off I could see the full body smudge on the glass of the top deck well believe it or not but and that's my story the missing people were never recovered and the whole incident was covered up it was splattered across the headlines at the carpe diem sank and all the passengers perished it wasn't a lie but it was misleading I didn't have the heart to contradict the stories who'd believe my story anyway I was perfectly satisfied to go back to my boring predictable life in my boring little hometown in Tennessee far away from the ocean and any creatures from the deep you
