the crunch roll anime awards are still a few months away and I know it's not like people really care about it but then this topic came out in a trash tased episode recently and it got me thinking about why the awards are badly received and how to improve it the main problem is pretty obvious Big Show's winning most of the awards this made the event not as fun to watch because it feels like we're just celebrating the top two most popular anime to come out that year instead of having the chance to share the spotlight with many other shows that deserve it I'm not making this up the crunchy roll awards has the least number of unique winners across its categories compared to some of its peers like r/ anime Awards and the anime trending Awards check out this helpful infographic that I did not make comparing the 2022 winners of categories that each award show shares out of the 13 shared categories crunchy roll has the least amount of unique winners at six r/ anime's Awards was split into a jury and public result and the jury results had nine unique winners in the public results had eight and the anime trending Awards had the highest number of unique winners at 10 so clearly crunchy roll has a representation problem it's boring to see the same shows winning award after award and it makes the whole event feel like a who's the biggest winner of the night scenario let's think for a second about what an ideal award show winners list might look like because it will actually help us in coming up with a solution the ideal viewing experience for award shows is if every category has a unique winner because then instead of a who's the biggest winner scenario you get something more in line with a who wins what kind of situation more of the fan base gets to celebrate their favorite anime winning something and it keeps the viewers engaged because it doesn't get predictable in stale and so we now have to think about the point of an award show what's the point of these events anyway the first ever award show was the Oscars or the Academy Awards officially and 1929 they held the first ever award show in history back then it was apparently created for iffy reasons since then though the official wording now is to celebrate all aspects of the film industry and people who make movies I think every award show shares this objective these days and that's not different from what Crunchyroll or any of the other anime award shows want to do and since the goal is to celebrate as many works as possible you can't host an award show and have only a few select winners come out on top now not saying they need to rig the results to get an artificial outcome where everyone just gets an award for the sake of it this isn't a participation award but at the same time it shouldn't feel like a competition where the popular shows win by leaving the rest behind it's not a freaking tournament Arc so what's the solution here simple we limit the number of categories each show can be dominated for this makes the voting process itself more fun there are 24 categories of for grabs this year and if we limit each show to only two for example and you have the judges vote on the nominees as always we'll end up with a situation where every category has a fresh set of nominees to choose from it's not like we're just trying to fill spots with random anime the point is that there are a lot of anime that deserves a shout out so we're trying to share the spotlight with more of them obviously there should be more thought put into exactly how you're going to do this maybe the limit applies to specific groups of categories or splitting up between individual ws and overall genres this might sound unfair for the shows that are just great in multiple things but going back to the point of award shows we're trying to celebrate the industry as a whole and we do that by celebrating the best aspects of as many shows as possible so it's not like we're ranking the top 10 shows of the year but rather shows that have done things worth celebrating I mean we have the anime of the Year award to indirectly rank shows anyways now here comes the key aspect of making this all work the judges panel there are a lot of things to consider here how do you get the split right between the judge and fan votes the thing is you don't want an r/ anime jury situation where the awards are decided by a small panel of Judges that might not reflect the anime fan base well where the selection feels almost distant and detached but at the same time you don't want a crunch roll situation where a few shows dominate I'm not totally clear on the process behind judge selection and nomination criteria but I think a bare minimum should be watching most if not all shows that air in that given year I mean that's one of the biggest differentiators between the Casual fan and someone with more Authority behind their choices you can't justify your choice if you've only seen 15 shows all year I think that's as close to objectivity as we can get in terms of whose voice matters more in a vote other than just inviting professionals who are directly involved in making anime on the other hand we need to ensure that fan votes still remain relevant after all anime is not made in the vacuum there may for people to watch and hopefully enjoy you take the audience's opinions out and it becomes this circle jerk where you Pat each other on the back after deciding on winners on your own terms I know crunchy roll feels like a popularity contest with the Big Show sweeping almost everything but taking fan votes out entirely still feels a step too far in the wrong direction although that might also reflect on the judges being too mainstream since crunch roll no longer clarifies how they split the votes on a side note popularity on its own shouldn't be seen as a bad trait a show gets popular for a reason and another show could be underrated for a perfectly valid reason too I think we should take popularity into account the question is how much is a 7030 split between judges and fan votes like what crunch roll did a few years ago good enough this year the 2024 crunchy roll Awards include categories like best art Direction and best cinematography now when it comes to these technical Awards I do think it's best to leave it to judges that know what they're talking about again quality control and all that I'm not familiar with the judges one last Point why are we excluding fall season shows from the year recenty bias might be a thing but this just shifts the goal post for which shows get supposedly affected by recency bias it used to be winter season shows now it's fall season all of this sounds like I'm trying to engineer the award show into a certain result and maybe I am at the end of the day these award shows aren't really a competition but an event to celebrate the industry and all the works that came out that year and because of that making sure that more anime that deserves recognition get that recogn is worthwhile in my [Music] opinion
