80s Genesis apologists who use the "Gabriel went pop too" line totally miss the point. Invisible Touch isn’t a bad song because it’s a pop song, it’s a bad song because it’s garish, unimaginative, generic, and suffers from a severe beauty deficit. Solsbury Hill is a good pop song because it has a beautiful melody, tasteful instrumentation, a soulful vocal performance and poignant, meaningful lyrics. If you think that this and Invisible Touch are equal in quality just because of a shared genre classification, who's really the "prog snob" here? ;)
Don’t get me wrong, the trio Genesis did have a few great songs here and there (invariably when Tony took the reins), but Gabriel’s solo career with its blend of emotionally substantial pop, progressive genre-blending and revolutionary sonic experimentation will always be the true spiritual successor to classic Genesis in my eyes, however different the two may be.
I love this song
Seriously - one of the greatest songs of the 20th century. Fight me.
