the mod scenes surrounding the original Xbox has been around a long time but in today's Xbox modding scene it's faster and easier than ever to soft modular console and you can learn how to do it in just a matter of minutes grab your Xbox and fire up your PC because you're about to learn something new there are a handful of websites to take a look at as we get started in the process I have every single one of these websites linked for you in the video's description first you'll need a USB drive that's compatible with the original Xbox this website shows you a list of all of the tested and known good USB drives that work with the original Xbox in summary the older the USB drive the better and it's best to look for USB drives that are four gigabytes in size or smaller there aren't any USB ports on the original Xbox so you'll need a way to connect a USB drive to the system this is where adapter cables like this one come in it's available on Amazon and I have it linked for you in the video description this cable has two Great Tricks up its sleeve on one end it has a female usba adapter to plug the USB stick in and on the other end it has a male controller plug so that you can connect the USB drive through a controller Port telling the Xbox that it actually has a memory card installed into it pretty cool huh you'll also need a game that can run a custom save file or what's commonly known as an exploit game I'm using the original Splinter Cell game in this example and eBay is a great place to find this game on the super cheap there are other games you can use and we'll take a look at them in just a moment I want to point out something specific about Splinter Cell here if you're going to use that game only use the original game don't grab the ones that say Pandora tomorrow or the ones that say chaos theory only grab the original Splinter Cell game for the Xbox alright to get the party started go ahead and turn on your Xbox from the main menu of the Xbox dashboard use the d-pad to move the Highlight up to memory and select it with a you'll see the internal hard drive storage represented here grab the USB adapter cable and insert the USB drive into it and remember pink USB drives compatible with Xbox's need love too then insert the other end into one of the control reports on the Xbox I normally use controller Port 4 because it's out of the way the Xbox will recognize the plugged in USB drive as a memory card art and it will automatically format it two important notes here it will erase any data on the USB drive and you also don't get any warning before it formats the USB drive once you plug it in it's automatically formatted okay you're done with your Xbox for now you can remove the USB drive from the controller Port but don't put it in your computer just yet instead go back to your web browser there are three different downloads you'll need to grab the first one is Rocky 5's Xbox soft modding tool an important thing to note about this page is that the downloads you need are not kept in the typical releases section of the GitHub page instead here's what you should do scroll down to this page and you'll see two important things of note the first one is consider a donation to The Rocky 5 project set as he's done an awful lot to help support the Xbox Community I've donated and I hope you'll consider doing the same the other thing is you'll see the download section here underneath the Donate link navigate to the text download link shown here and click on it this is going to take you to the Google Drive page for Rocky 5. near the bottom of this page you'll see a folder called Xbox soft modding tool right click on it and then select download from the list of choices in the pop-out menu I left this running in real time just so you wouldn't be worried if it took a few extra seconds for your browser to start the download process next up you'll need to download the Explorer 360 software for Windows yeah I know it says 360 like Xbox 360 but it rents to Fat X volumes which is what you need here scroll down to the page until you see the listing for version 0.9 beta 6 and click on it to continue hey you know how this is a gaming channel right well good news for you you're about to play a game you see for the download process to take place you have to jump through a couple of flaming Hoops here scroll down on the page and the first listing says enable download 1. click on it and you'll see a pop-up window appear don't worry these are legitimate pop-ups and they take you to legitimate Xbox websites once again I've left this running in real time because it can take a few seconds for this pop-up to fill in and it needs to populate before you close it out to get the second download link to work properly I just don't want you to worry when you go through this process thinking that nothing's happening because see it actually is once the first pop-up has been populated you can close it out with the x button in the right corner you'll see that the enable download 2 is now turned on click it and you'll see that a second pop-up will populate this one typically goes much faster once you're done with it hit the x button to close it out and you'll see that download has now been lit up click download to continue this takes you to the actual file download page so it can be downloaded to your computer alright two things to point out here the first one is depending upon which browser you're using the download might not automatically take place you might have to go in and manually authorize the download take a look at this I'm using Microsoft edge here but no matter which browser you're using there's typically some kind of drop down that will allow you to continue the download process for applications that have been held by your browser here I'll click on keep and keep anyway this will complete the download process and a quick note here for Chrome users see where you have a link right here that you can click to download and click save as it's not going to work in Chrome click away all you want it won't download it instead right click on this download link and select open in new window then when that window opens refresh the window and the file will be downloaded again this is only necessary if you're using Chrome there's one more download to go and it's a dll file scroll down on this website until you get to about the center of the page where you see the msvcr71.dll and the most recent version of the file then come over to the right and click on the download link this will take you to the download page and the download should start automatically again it may take a few seconds for your browser to start the download process now that you've got everything downloaded that you're going to need let's get it all unpacked open up a new file explorer window and select your downloads folder you'll see three zip files here and they all need to be uncompressed you can extract them directly into their predetermined paths I always think it's a good idea to delete zip files once you've uncompressed them in order to eliminate clutter out of the folder that you're working in navigate to the msvcr71 folder and double click into it you'll see a file in here called msvcr71.dll right click on the file and select copy go back one level until you get back to the root of downloads Now navigate to the Explorer 360 folder and double click into it there's only one file in there so right click and select paste this will paste the dll file alongside the Explorer File go back one level in downloads and you can delete the msvcr71 folder and remember deleted files and folders are still archived in your recycle bin if you need them next navigate to the Xbox soft modding tool folder and double click into it inside this folder you'll see a subfolder called Soft mod package navigate to the folder double-click into it you'll find a series of zipped up folders here that represent all of the games that you can use as exploit games they include 007 agent Under Fire Frogger Beyond Mecha salt metal arms for both ntsc and bowel regions Splinter Cell for both ntsc and foul regions we'll come back to this one in just a minute and Tony Hawk 4 for ntsc foul and region free versions of the game the save game files for every exploit game will also need to include the softmod save file to make the next set of processes go much easier I'm going to split this up into two File Explorer windows I'll track this window all the way over to the left side of the screen and snap it into place next up rather than dragging and dropping files directly onto the Windows desktop I'm going to open a file explorer window navigate to this PC and open up the desktop from here to create a second file explorer window see when you drag and drop things onto your Windows desktop they're most likely going to snap into place under the recycle bin and you won't see what you're copying over this way you can see what's being moved to your desktop in the file explorer window for downloads locate the save game file that you're going to use with your exploit game right click on it and extract it normally I delete zip files once they're extracted but there are so many of them in there it's not really going to help anything instead navigate to the soft mod save zip file right click on it and select extract all once you have both of these extracted it kind of makes sense at this point to press the F5 button on your keyboard so that you can sort out the uncompressed folders from the zip file in this case it pushed the uncompressed folders all the way up to the top of the file explorer window which is pretty darn convenient each of those two uncompressed folders has a subfolder that needs to be copied over to your desktop so in this case I'll go to the Splinter Cell save folder first and double click in you'll find this you data folder inside here double click into it you'll find a subfolder end here with an eight character alphanumeric name grab that folder and drag and drop it onto the desktop all right good that's one of them so go back a couple of times until you get back into the folder that has your save game data in it next go into the soft mod save folder and double click into it just like before you'll see a you data folder in here navigate to it double click into it you'll find another folder with an alphanumeric character set here grab that folder and drag and drop it to the desktop also good deal now that you've got all of the save data copied over you can go back over to the file explorer window for downloads and navigate all the way back to your downloads folder you won't need the Xbox soft modding tool folder anymore right click select delete to send it to the recycle bin and remember it's still archived there if you need it later that leaves us with just one folder Explorer 360. navigate to the folder and double click into it important note here don't launch it just yet instead right click on the file and select properties you see this program has been around as my friend Tim would say since Moby Dick was a minnow you'll need to run it in Windows 7 compatibility mode for it to work correctly click on the compatibility tab there's an option here that says run this program in compatibility mode click the check box then click on the newly highlighted drop down menu scroll down through the list of choices to Windows 7 and click on it to select it to lock in the change come down to apply in the bottom right corner and click on it then click on OK to close out the window now you can go ahead and double click on the exe file to launch the program for the first time go ahead and insert your Xbox USB drive I'd recommend that you insert it into one of the main motherboard USB ports rather than a hub or extension off the motherboard at the pop-up recommending that you format the USB drive click cancel then at the pop-up that appears click ok to close out all of the pop-up messages navigate to the drop down tab in the top left corner for drive and click on it hover over open with the pointer then click on the listing for hard drive or mem card to select it if you've done it all correctly up to this point you'll see a listing that says partition 0 in the left column that's your USB drive click on it to select it now comes the payoff for all the work you did to put those saved game files on the desktop all you have to do here is just drag over them to select them then drag and drop them into the right side pane inside Explorer 360. this process only takes a few moments and everything will be copied into the correct location on your FedEx formatted USB storage Drive once everything's been copied over to the USB drive you're done with Explorer 360. go back up to the tab in the top left corner for drive and click on it to select it from the list of choices this time navigate down to close and select close click on drive again then navigate down to exit to select it to close the program go ahead and remove the USB drive from your computer and put it back into the controller port on your Xbox system power on your Xbox if you haven't already from the dashboard go back up to memory using the d-pad and select memory with the a button this is going to pull up the list of storage locations which would include your hard drive and the connected USB drive you'll want to copy the two save files from the USB drive to the hard drive to do this use the d-pad to shift the Highlight from hard drive over to memory unit and select memory unit with the a button if you've done everything right up to this point you should see the save games that you copied over to the USB drive represented here you'll need to copy these saved games over to the hard drive to do this scroll down to the first one which in this case is Splinter Cell and then scroll over to the right if you try to copy it over from the left side pane it won't work you have to slide over to the right with a d-pad select it with the a button then select select copy you'll be asked where you want to copy it to well there's only one location which is the hard drive select hard drive with the a button and the save files copied over press the B button to go back one level until you're back to the list of save games to copy the save for the soft modding tool go down with the d-pad scroll over to the right if you haven't already then press the a button to select the soft mod tool save just like you did with the other game save select copy with the a button you'll be prompted where you want to send it the only location is hard drive select it with the a button this one takes just a moment to copy over because it's much more sizeable than a standard game save file but once the process is complete you're done copying things over from the USB drive to the hard drive you can press the B button several times until you get all the way back to the Xbox main menu on the dashboard you can now remove and store the USB drive from the controller port on the Xbox open the district on the Xbox insert the exploit game of your choice and close the disk tray give your exploit game a few moments to load up and get to the main menu in the case of Splinter Cell select start gate from the list of choices you'll see a save game file here named Linux selected with the a button next you'll see a listing called checkpoints select it with the a button and it's entirely possible nothing at all might happen in your system mic crash if this happens Don't Panic just power on your Xbox and run the exploit process again even if you have to run it more than once the exploit process will work and you'll be taken to the Xbox soft modding tool this has got to be the simplest soft modding tool in the history of soft butting all you have to do is press the a button when you're prompted to complete the process so let's put it into the test press the a button to get started and you'll see a series of files and folders get copied over to the Xbox hard drive when the process is complete you'll see a pop-up notification that your eprom will be backed up to your Xbox this is a safeguard measure in case anything goes wrong during the soft mounting process select I understand with the a button to continue you'll be notified that this eprom is required if you plan to use a locked hard drive with your Xbox in the future we'll take a look at how to upgrade the hard drive in the Xbox in an upcoming video in the meantime just press a for I understand you'll be notified in the next screen that the Xbox soft modding process is complete but there's still some work to be done here for now just press the a button for I understand eject the exploit game from the Xbox then power off the Xbox system wait for just a moment and then turn it right back on your Xbox should now boot into a softmod dashboard the first thing that you want to check out here is which version of the Xbox motherboard you have in this case this is a version 1.2 motherboard this information is important to know when installing future mods and upgrades let's take a look at some noteworthy settings from inside the soft mod use the d-pad to move the Highlight down on the left navigation pane to system and select system with the a button from the system Sub menu use the d-pad to scroll the Highlight down to settings and select settings with the a button it sounds kind of funny to say you should navigate from system to settings to system but that's exactly what I'd recommend that you do use the dfad inside the settings submenu to scroll all the way down to system then select system with the a button inside this menu you can control things like whether you want to see temperatures in Fahrenheit or Celsius and how fast you want the fan inside your Xbox to run there are a lot of great customizable settings that you can play around with here just make sure that if you make any changes to this that you scroll all the way down to the bottom and locate Save and select it with the a button otherwise the changes you made won't stick once you've made the changes you'd like and save them scroll down to exit and select it with the a button it's absolutely worth checking the video display settings on your newly soft modded Xbox to do that press down on the dfat one time to get to video display and then select it with a the big hitter 0 right up at the top of the menu the first one is whether you want ntsc or Pal region in this case I'm an ntsc so I'll leave it there next up do you want to use normal or widescreen I'd prefer to use widescreen so I'll make that change here then you can choose to turn on 480p 720p and or 1080i from the menu choices I'm going to turn them all on here to take advantage of whichever games and Menus can use them once you've made your selection scroll all the way down to the bottom of the screen locate Save and select it with the a button you'll see a pop-up message notifying you that before these changes take place you'll need to restart your Xbox system press the a button for ok to continue scroll down to exit and select exit with the a button to exit the settings menu press the B button several times until you're back at the Xbox softmod dashboard since the video changes won't take effect until the Xbox is restarted power off the Xbox give it a few moments and turn it right back on now the dashboard will be in widescreen mode if you selected that option this dashboard is great and all but it's kind of vanilla looking there are some better options available to you once again use the d-pad to scroll down to system and select it with the a button all the way down at the bottom of the system Sub menu there's a menu listing for skins scroll down to it with the d-pad and select skins with the a button you'll see a number of pre-configured ready-to-use dashboards available in this case I'm going to use the one that's labeled default all the way up at the top of the listings that's actually the unleash X dashboard use the d-pad to scroll the Highlight to the dashboard of your choosing and select it with the a button once you've chosen your dashboard press the B button to go back and you'll now be in the dashboard that you selected all of the features and functionalities of your soft modded Xbox are available to you in unleash X just like they were in the stock dashboard if you really want to get the most out of your soft modded Xbox learn how to get it connected to your display with HDMI from this video shown on screen and Linked In the description and pin comment
