Hello to all the lovers and curious of history, welcome to my channel, today I bring you the life of Sofia of Saxony, she is remembered for being the first wife of Duke Carlos Teodoro of Bavaria and for being one of the sisters-in-law of the Empress Sissi, being a sickly and delicate princess who had too short a life, causing her premature death that her husband decided to completely change his life. This biography is made at the request of Irene Azuaje, Martín Tello and Angélica María Ortega. Sofía María Federica Augusta Leopoldina Alejandrina Ernestina Albertina Isabel de Wettin y de Wittelsbach was born on March 15, 1845 in the Palace of Dresden, in the Kingdom of Saxony, currently in Germany. She was the daughter of King John I of Saxony and his wife, Queen Amalia Augusta of Bavaria. The couple had 9 children together, with Sofía being the last of their offspring. When the girl was born, her father was not yet King of Saxony, but her paternal uncle, Frederick Augustus II, was the one who ruled at that time, but since he had no children from his two marriages with Archduchess Maria Carolina of Austria and Queen Maria Ana of Bavaria, her father Juan would end up sitting on the throne of Saxony as Juan I. Being the youngest of the children of the monarchs of Saxony, the princess would see how almost all her older sisters were marrying and dying at a fairly early age, something that would greatly affect the princess. Soon, they began to look for a good marriage for Sofía and she would end up being seen as the perfect candidate to marry her first cousin Carlos Teodoro, who had become the heir to her parents, the Dukes Maximiliano José de Baviera and Ludovica de Baviera, because his older brother, Luis de Baviera, renounced his inheritance rights to contract a morganatic marriage with the actress Henriette Mendel. In the year 1864 Prince Carlos Theodore visited the Saxon court with the intention of formally asking for her hand in marriage. Sofía and Carlos Teodoro were first cousins as they were the mothers of both sisters, in addition, her fiancé was the older brother of Isabel of Baviera, the well-known Empress Sissi. The fiancés had already known each other since they were little by meeting at different family gatherings and the relationship between them had always been good. On February 11, 1865, the wedding between Sofía and Carlos Teodoro took place in the city of Dresden, in the Kingdom of Saxony, by then she was 19 years old at the time of the union and he was 25. The newlyweds would show up As a very happy and in love couple, their marriage being seen as a complete success, Sofia would even get pregnant a month after getting married, something that was a great joy for both families. On December 24, 1865, the only daughter of the marriage would be born, a girl named Amalia María, who would become consort duchess of Urach. Sofia had always been a very delicate and sickly woman, but that birth left her very weak and she began to develop a series of respiratory problems. As the months went by, Sofía's condition would gradually worsen, meanwhile, her husband Carlos Teodoro would be forced to stay away from her to participate in the Austro-Prussian War, but when he managed to return to her side, the princess she fell ill with a flu that would be fatal for her, causing her to end up dying on March 9, 1867 at the age of 21 in the city of Munich, in Bavaria. Sofia's death would be very painful for her family, especially for her husband, who would show himself to be a truly heartbroken man with his loss. Carlos Teodoro would feel very bad for not having been able to save the life of his beloved wife and for not having spent more time with her, so against the wishes of his family, he decided to abandon his military career and study medicine, converting with the time at a famous ophthalmologist. Seven years after his death, his widower would end up marrying the Portuguese infanta María José de Braganza, a marriage that would be happy and that he would end up being in love, giving birth to five more children from this union. Sofia's mortal remains rest in Tegernsee Abbey in Germany. There is not much more to say about Sofia, she had a rather short life, like almost all her sisters, thus dying at a too young age, her sister Isabel being the only one of the sisters who became old. Sofia managed to find love at a time when marital unhappiness was the order of the day in the face of so many arranged marriages that were celebrated out of interest, politics or to strengthen family ties, but this princess came to be loved by her husband and maintain a brief but happy marriage. As has happened on many other occasions throughout history, happy unions always ended up having a fatal outcome or were very brief, but Sofía's premature death caused her husband Carlos Teodoro to decide to study medicine, something that went against his the wishes of his own family and that was not common among families of nobility and royalty, but her husband managed to have a successful career as an ophthalmologist and helped many people throughout his life, being helped in consultation by his second wife the Duchess María José de Braganza, who would become his assistant and his faithful companion.
