so you want to learn the spear something I found kind of funny is that a year ago from today almost nobody in their right mind would want to learn how to play spear I mean it was considered one of the worst weapons in The Meta back then however within the past six months or so despite receiving very minimal if any Buffs at all it Rose from one of the worst weapons of the meta to somehow one of the best weapons as someone who's played Spirit throughout the entire time in the past five years I think I know a thing or two about spear so with all that being said this is tripped Up's official spear guide but before I get into the guide allow me to give you a brief history of the spear now the invention of the spear goes way back into history however it wasn't called the spirit first it was known as the stick the first documented usage of this stick can be seen in the very historically accurate movie The Good dinosaur where dinosaurs can be seen using sticks for various reasons however dinosaurs are very stupid and got themselves killed very easily because of this the true potential of the stick was not realized until much later in human history this potential would finally be shown in the 2006 film 300 when the Spartan Army pulls off the greatest clutch in human history with only you guessed it sticks or as they now called them Spears now you may be asking where in the world do they get the name spear from well I can only infer that it was a reference to Wrigley's Spearmint Gum which was invented in 1893. anyways in honor of the Spartan Army rahala added spear into the game and give it to Orion who to this day is one of the most broken Legends in the game and that concludes the history lesson of spear with Professor tripped up now that you understand the origin of the spear it's about time that you learn how to play it first I'll begin with the entire move set of spear we start with end light which is the quick succession of multiple short Jabs this move along with a lot of Spears kit requires good knowledge of spacing as the hitbox is far away from your Legend and doesn't hit up close if used correctly end light can be abused to punish players with bad movement or spacing it's also a really easy way to break the mental of players who keep running into it trust me I've had plenty of people quit after being hit by this five times in a row next is side light which is the main combo starter of spear this move has a very generous hitbox as well as very little in lag which allows players to spam it until they catch their opponent into a combo I do have more to say about side light but I'll save it for a later section and just move on to d light delay on spear has long been notoriously known as a jump with hitboxes and honestly that title does do it justice delay is most commonly used after a side light since the main combo of spear is side light D-light however this move is also a great way to counter players that are constantly hovering above their opponents we're now moving on to air moves starting with Nair just like naron guitars spironaire is constantly abused by spear players I would argue that spironaire is actually a little worse than guitars in air but this is a spear guide so who really cares anyways this move has a 360 degree hitbox and also has multiple directions that it can send opponents after hitting them obviously if the opponent is hit on the left then they'll be sent left if on the right then right down down and up up however if they're hitting the very center of the hitbox they'll also be sent up this can be very useful against players that remain grounded all the time as if you hit them in the center of the hitbox on the ground they'll be sent up in which you can do recovery or a Ser or anything like that speaking of ser that moves up next Sarah is the main kill move of spear as is often used after the side light Delight combo this move has a lot of force and can often catch people off guard when they're trying to recover back onto stage so keep that in mind when you're trying to kill your opponent now let's move on to dare dare is a quick jab downwards however how I like to refer to it as is pogo sticking if timed correctly you can actually infinitely hit somebody with a dare although this requires them to stand completely still so it will actually happen in a real game however just like with end light I've had multiple people quit the game after I hit them five or six times in a row while pogo sticking dare is also a fast and easy way to hit somebody while they're hugging the wall next we have spear recovery the hitbox for Recovery is about the size of Megamind's forehead in other words absolutely ginormous for that reason spear players love to span this move when their opponent is above them this move can also really easily hit people that are Edge guarding you when you're off stage if it weren't for Sarah this would definitely be the main kill move of spear however it is pretty good as a recovery every option by itself maybe not the best but definitely not the worst either and finally we have ground pound ground pound shares the ginormous hitbox the recovery has just you know downward many novice sphere players love to spam this move when they're in the air for even a second however this is not the way to go the best use for ground pound is against wall Huggers however I do believe that dare is a less risky and better alternative and that is the entire move set of spear okay just like in my Scythe guide I'm gonna take this time to answer the most popular questions I used to get when I coached spear number one what are the best combos for spear when it comes to combos most of them are going to stem off of either side light or d light as I mentioned earlier sidelight d light is definitely the most popular spear combo however there are many different variations after the Sci-Fi d light just to name a few off the top of the head you have side light delight and Acer sidelight d light gravity cancel Delight into ser and side light Delight into Nair of course there are many other complex combos that require Dodge reads and whatnot but when it comes to sphere your main combo is going to come off of side light or D-light of course there are many combos that aren't from side light Delight for example you have inlight into d light and also dare and desire I'm not gonna go over every single spear combo I know because one that would take a long time and two there are already plenty of videos out there that show all of the combos of spear so if you really want to know I'd say look up one of those number two what's the best way to Edge guard with spear from my experience inlight is the best move to use when you're trying to Edge guard someone I've found that many players are unable to avoid inlight when jumping back on the stage and will be hit by it two or three times before realizing they have to recover higher in order to avoid it so what do you do when they decide to recover higher well you have multiple options if they're not in Kill percentage I'd say use a combo starter such as Delight or Nair if they are within kill percentage however I'd say use a kill move such as Ser or recovery and of course you can always use a combination of the two such as delight and a Ser if you're trying to get a kill move now if your opponent is wall hugging the best way to punish them is with their as I said earlier dare is a very fast move and many players are unable to react to in time and are hit by it and sent down into the void if timed correctly you can actually get pretty early kills if you continuously hit them off stage with their and of course ground pound is a viable option as well however I definitely would not use it as much as dare number three how do you properly use spear off stage in all honesty there's not very much to this one when playing off stage with your opponent you have many options at your disposal to use depending on where they are if your opponent is below you which by the way is probably the best place for them to be using Nair dare or ground pound can all be really good ways to send them downward if your opponent is eye level with you narrow Sarah your two best options especially Sarah since that move has a lot of force and can lead to some early kills and then if your opponent is above you recovery is probably going to be your best option especially if they're at a kill percentage another thing to remember is that spear has one of the biggest weapon throw hitboxes in the entire game so if used correctly weapon Throne Spears can be really hard to avoid number four what are the biggest mistakes that players make with spear there are several big errors that I find people making when I watch them play spear one of these mistakes is people relying too much on side bite rather than their other moves many beginner spear players completely ignore moves such as inlight or d light and step we'll just use side light in order to get the side light d-like combo I've even seen Diamond level sphere players that will continuously use side light over and over and not use other moves it's important to learn to use all of Spears moveset as all the moves combine make spear into a very good weapon speaking of other moves that brings me into my second big mistake people not using d light as an individual move when people try to learn to play spear and find out about the side light D-light combo some find themselves only using d light after a side light because it's the main combo however delay on its own can actually be a really useful tool it can be used to punish opponents that are hovering above you a lot as well as use of the gravity cancel as an alternative recovery option whatever way you find yourself using it it's important to make sure you're not only using it after a side light the third and final biggest mistake is people that will use recovery and ground pound too much listen okay I understand they both have massive hitboxes and inexperienced players cannot Dodge it for the life of them however once you reach a certain skill level and ranked players will not fall for this as easily so even if you're still at a point where abusing these two moves works really well I encourage you to stop doing it as much I'm not saying to stop using them all together because trust me as a spear main I've used spear recovery more times than there are stars in the sky however it's definitely a bad habit to abuse them too much especially ground pound number five what is the best spear legend in the game as one of the first weapons in the game there are a lot of spear Legends however at the end of the day it all comes down to personal preference although if I had to give you the 100 objective truth about this question it would easily be Mirage in all seriousness though right now I would say the best spear Legend is probably Kaya because um Bo but to find the best spear legend for you you're just gonna have to try them all out that's the best way to find the perfect match for you or you can do what I did and pick a character based on the fact that they have the same name as your favorite map in CS go True Story number six what's the best way to space with spear as a general rule of thumb I always like to keep my opponents at least in in light's distance from me if they're closer than that my inline won't hit and therefore they'll probably end up punishing me the other reason is because moves such as Ser have the same amount of reach as an in-light does so if I'm trying to hit my opponent with a grounded Sarah or something I know I can hit them if they're at least at an inline's distance overall it's just about having good knowledge of the hitboxes of Spear and knowing where you need to keep your opponents in order to hit them that was a very simplified version of spacing but this isn't exactly a spacing guide so hopefully that can suffice number seven how do I dodge read with spear for this I'm just gonna talk about Dodge reading with the side light D-light combo after hitting your opponent with a side light there are five main ways they can dodge they can do a spot Dodge Dodge down left right or up if they spot Dodge you can wait for the spot Dodge to be over before continuing your combo with a delight if they don't down you can back dash and do another side light and restart the combo if they Dodge left or right you can just Dash in that direction and do a d light to continue the combo now all of that was probably common knowledge however one thing that a lot of people don't know is what to do when their opponent Dodges up or jumps if your opponent Dodges up or jumps all you have to do is jump as well and then do a gravity cancel D-light to continue the combo if you find yourself unable to hit the gravity cancel d light consistently you can always do a jump recovery or a jump near instead and of course your opponent can always Dodge diagonally however all that requires is some variation of the down Dodge read or the up Dodge read and finally number eight what's the best way to improve of spear just like with anything the best way is practice whether you're going into training mode to practice your combos or Dodge reads or you're just playing experimental and ranked you need to play more in order to improve of course watching guides and Pro gameplay of spear can help too but nothing compares to actually getting out there and playing with the spear and yeah that about does it for my spear guide if you have any questions about the guide or how to play spear the best way to reach me is to join my Discord server and message me there the link will be at the top of the description
