it's an exciting day for Windows laptop users my videos and editorials are brought to you by people like you the generosity of folks on my patreon they're helping keep the lights on a little bit more about them later on in this video it's AI Windows laptop day and I feel like the AI is probably the least important part of all of these product announcements when you've got the space for a desktop you can put in all the bits and pieces that you want and you don't have to worry about power as much but when when we're talking about portable Computing the viability of an arm chipset has kind of been proven by the MacBook and I've been showcasing other ways that we can displace laptop use by using really powerful smartphones that have things like desktop modes I've been really excited about this after going Hands-On with the Qualcomm uh X Elite processor I got to go down to San Diego check out all of the different uh test systems that Qualcomm was using for Content creation and for gaming and for benchmarking what I'd like to do is just kind of react to some of these announcements go directly to the web pages we can check out some of these systems and see if we can start maybe a a trend like some buying advice on what kind of systems might be right for which kinds of consumers starting us off I think the first place that we should look for a Windows on arm announcement is Microsoft Microsoft recently announced refreshes to the Surface Pro and the surface laptop but now we've got actual consumer pre-order Pages built uh starting off with the Surface Pro it is a very similar design we've got an OLED display 90% faster performance now I wonder if they're saying 90% faster performance than an Intel part or some kind or maybe like the last generation surface that did have an arm chip and also this npu is is uh sort of the exciting thing for Microsoft because we've been seeing a whole host of these AI accelerated co-pilot plus experiences on this channel I recently showed off the update to the photos app in Windows 11 and that now has generative erase so if your computer has one of these npus it's able to uh content fill as you erase things out of the photo it actually works really well it's very similar to uh Google's Magic Eraser on Android phones as these mpus get more powerful we can improve on a lot of those on device services and this is the big confusion I think for a lot of consumers what AI is really running up in the cloud on a Data Center and what AI is really being processed on the device in your hands we've got a lot of these aspirational statements on all of the manufacturers are going to be taking a look at but build to do the impossible and scrolling through and getting a wraparound the Surface Pro Design is still one of my all-time favorites and it's exciting to see an actual Pro tablet form factor with Pen and Touch support a built-in integrated kickstand you know a a variety of different blade keyboards that you can pop on and it's a full-fledged computer it's not a mobile operating system device almost anything that you can install on an x86 an Intel or AMD powered computer you'll be able to install on this too I'm scrolling by a lot of this AI stuff because really that's going to be in the hand uh unique to the consumer whether or not these are the types of experiences that you really care about I I think the thing for me what I really care about is a device that can run at a higher performance tier and use less battery life um while also running quieter and that's what uh the ex Elite chip is that's what I think is really exciting about the X Elite chip is that it moves a tablet like this into a more iPad like type of portability but you're not sacrificing full operating system capabilities it's pre-order launch day this is what's pretty exciting so if you go with the surface X plus with an LCD it's starting at $899.99 if you want to step up to an OLED that's going to start you off at $349.99 but let's just I I just want to configure a WiFi X+ so this is not the most powerful Qualcomm chip the X Elite this is one of the things I think is going to be really frustrating as we look at all of these different manufacturers Qualcomm is putting out a series of chips there's X+ and ex Elite but within ex Elite there are also different tiers of performance I know of at least three chips the 84 the 80 and the 78 something tells me a lot of these companies are only going to say things like 12 core processor and then we're really not going to be able to tell which version of the X Elite or X+ you're going to get but we're starting off with the X+ LCD display and LCD uh surfaces have still been looking really good um they make you pick a color I I guess I'll pick black um right now I'm only picking Wi-Fi because any of these connected devices with 5G radios will be available later and then the only option that we have is 16 GB of RAM and 512 gig of storage Microsoft starts their build configuration at $899.99 I've not selected anything that should be raising the price but adding RAM and storage has now bumped up the price and this is the pre-order sale price to $179.99 so now if we go to the OLED and the more powerful chip starting at6 16 512 we're at 13499 then to go up to a terabyte of storage is $529.99 so that's a pretty big jump that's uh over $400 more to go with the OLED instead of the LCD and to double the storage now all of these systems because of the way that an arm chip works I don't believe we've seen anyone detail that uh uh their laptops are going to have upgradable Ram unfortunately kind of like what Apple's doing with the MacBook um I believe all of these systems are going to have Ram soldered into the so well I that's not even correct to say it's not soldered into the main board I believe it's a part of the so that's a bit disappointing but here's one of the critical differences between something like an iPad and something like a Windows on arm PC we saw this with the Surface Pro sq3 we saw this with the robo and kala and I believe the Lenovo was also similar even though we can't upgrade the RAM we can get to that storage so let's say you start out with the 512 gig version of the Surface Pro if we scroll down and we believe this early text spec page we should have a removable solid state Gen 4 SSD I'm assuming this is going to be like the uh the minized m.2 drives that we you know the kind of thing that you would order and put into your steam deck that does make storage a little bit more expensive but if you start out with a 512 GB machine later on you should be able to upgrade that to a one or two terabyte probably cheaper than what Microsoft is going to charge you for that storage right at the gate okay so that's the Surface Pro I also want to check out the the surface laptop you know I I I love all this flowery it's literally flowery aspirational do what you can't in the impossible Elegance refined yeah it's gorgeous from every angle it's a laptop it's a really thin and Sleek laptop I really like the surface design I still have the surface laptop go to really pretty student grade machine we're going to go directly to pre-order now this one is similar to the Surface Pro if we start with the 13.8 in the smaller uh surface laptop we can select between the Snapdragon X+ and the Snapdragon X Elite chips Microsoft isn't telling us what chip you're actually going to get it is my hypothesis that Microsoft is going to start people off at the lowest level chip so for an X Elite version of the laptop that's going to be the 78 series chip so starting at $8.99 and now we're going to click on Snapdragon X+ I want to see what a good uh starter laptop is going to cost and we're still at $8.99 so this one makes sense you go lean you can go with a 16 G G of ram 256 gig system for $8.99 it's not letting me pick it oh I need to pick a color I I like the blue oh I don't want that let's see the rose the gray okay so you can have any color you want at the base model specs as long as you want gray so 16 256 there we have an A $900 system but let's really spec this out let's let's build the machine that I would want to use from Microsoft when me and my uh my friend TK we went down to San Diego and we got to test a bunch of those Qualcomm demo units all of those lower Power Systems were running 64 gig of RAM okay so the X+ chip unfortunately that doesn't look like we can bump up the RAM and the X Elite smaller version also doesn't look like we can bump up the ram but that's going to take prices um a little bit higher so an X Elite with 512 that's going to be $159 and then an X Elite with one terabyte is going to be 1439 so I think this means we've got to go to the 15in laptop and oh the colors might also make a difference because I have gray and black now it doesn't look like the X Elite has the blue or the rose option so let's see if I go black oh here we go okay so if you want a serious Big Boy computer for Microsoft you can have any color you want so long as you want black and this is like ACDC should be playing in the background on this okay now we can add more RAM but all of our storage options are still only one TB so this is quite a bit to pay for both a ram and a storage upgrade going from 512 to 1 terabyte and now we've got options for 32 gigs of RAM and 64 gigs of RAM that 64 is so important to me because I think that's the system that we tested fanless down in San Diego so if I wanted that kind of performance we were really impressed with the performance of those systems I think the safest bet would be to ludicrously max out the RAM on this system so this laptop is now going to go to the full price is $2500 on pre-order sale now $ 2249996768 being accurate that both the laptops and the surface Pros are going to have removable and upgradeable storage okay so that's uh that's Microsoft that's a good place to start we've got two versions of the Surface Pro we've got two sizes for the surface laptop that is a good healthy spread of different products different solutions and different price points moving on we're going to hit HP and this is the HP Omni book X AIP PCS where again the least interesting part of this for me is that it has a co-pilot button on the keyboard it's more we're going to get a higher tier performance with less battery draw so these things can be used out in the field even longer yeah it's all ai ai ai ex Elite AI fuel your creative potential with the AI enhanced immersive experiences AI I never thought I'd say this but if HP uh if their purchasing website were a person I would kiss them on the cheek before we even get into the shop we've got this the Snapdragon X Elite x178 it's at least telling us what version of the ex Elite chip we're going to get so we're going to click on shop here we're going to try and configure one of these systems they all look like 14 in again we're seeing this $12.99 12.99 and price is starting at $1.49 but it's on this 1149 option that we can customize so again we've got 16 GB of RAM 512 gigs of storage they're call they're saying it's an nvme m.2 SSD so this is not storage that's built directly into the S so and we've got the lowest tier of the X Elite chip the 78 Series so let me see customize and buy let me see if we can actually bump this up they get a little uh nitpicker here where we didn't have this option I don't think on on the Microsoft products we can bump up to Windows 11 Pro instead of Windows 11 home uh we do have a $150 option to move up so this one's confusing to me this is the exolite 78 it's up to 3.4 GHz in 12 cores up to 3.4 GHz in 12 cores oh I'm sorry okay so I I I didn't see that we don't have an option to change processor this is our processor graphics and memory that's a lot to put under one subcategory here so we're we're stuck with the 78 but we can jump up to 32 gigs of RAM there is no option for 64 they all have the same 14-in display play and then we've got options to move um so we can go with a 512 gig SSD go to a 4x4 uh 512 gig SSD one tbte and then a 1 tbyte 4x4 the maximum the fastest and uh biggest SSD that we can put in here is going to be $130 and then we've got a whole bunch of technical support and extended care services we're not going to mess with any of that we get a whole whopping like I think it's a one month yeah one month free Adobe trial oo that's some good spending right there and then we can also spruce up the uh the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi so Wi-Fi 6E is included in that price or we can spend another $10 and get Wi-Fi 7 I think you should spend the $10 there and that takes us to $1,589 it is my assertion until we see what Microsoft really puts into the surface laptop right now Microsoft do this thing where they call it a different name than anyone else is using on the older windows on arm PCS we had the Snapdragon 8cx gen 3 on the Surface Pro we had the sq3 here we've got the 78 the 80 and the 84 there's that whole string of code of of letters and numbers telling you what chip it is but that middle number is what's important 78 80 or 84 and Microsoft is calling their chip the Snapdragon X Elite C12 so annoying mic Microsoft if anyone you know in your engineering department catches this we'd all really appreciate it if you just told us what chip was going to be in the laptop and just worth pointing out so we've got a $1,500 system here from HP if we kind of walk back the RAM on that surface so oh wait no I think it's this tab if we walk back the RAM on the surface it's the X Elite and 32 gig gig gigabyt of RAM with a 1 tab SSD that's coming at 1889 so 3 $80 difference between a surface a co-pilot PC laptop and an HP omnibook X laptop AI PC these names are terrible moving on all right so we've seen HP and if we're going to cover HP we should probably cover Dell I'm just going to go directly to the XPS 13's uh product page so we can just start configuring a machine so kind of like HP if the Dell shopping website were a person I would lovingly kiss them on the cheek too because the XPS 13 is a known entity it's a known laptop and instead of doing like funky difference this is a a Qualcomm laptop with a different name it's the xpz 13 a d XPS is a Dell XPS and when you go to shop an XPS 13 you get a toggle switch at the top of the screen for an Intel or a Snapdragon system that's the way it should be clicking on a Snapdragon we start at $12.99 like h h p we can uh pay more for Windows 11 Pro um let's see Qualcomm adreno we don't have options for any differences in Ram we don't have options for any differences in hard drive I wonder if they're going to give us anything we don't have options for anything on the display the configuration for the XPS 13 is pretty well baked and the most you can bump it up to is just Windows 11 Pro the hardware is set 16 gigs of RAM 512 gigs of storage listed as a pcie nvme solid state drive I think that's very important hopefully also means we can crack this open add more storage at some some other later date but we should highlight that this lists the 80 series Snapdragon Elite so this should be a more power a slightly more powerful system than the HP and what I believe Microsoft is going to use for the surface laptop the x1e 80-100 that middle tier chip that's the one that I think is going to give us some slightly higher clock speeds and a little bit of a nudge in performance that seems to be the primary system offered by Dell here I just want to see if the 14inch or 15inch are also getting oh the the the 14inch is an Intel Core Ultra 7 the 15in likewise uh is a core i7 I don't think any of the other XPS models are carrying any differences in the the processor these all look like Intel parts so I can switch over here we've got two systems from Lenovo this is also one of the top manufacturers on my list uh to watch for future arm PCS Lenovo is one of the most aggressive companies in uh delivering different form factors from the original yoga that could bend the screen all the way around to detachables and dual displays and foldables when we've got an arm chip in some of these other form factors they're the company that I think are going to give us some of the most aggressive form factors and uh different designs but right now they're starting it out a little bit more conservatively we have a yoga slim but this doesn't look like a yoga that can bend the screen all the way around so it's sort of a yoga in name only the yoga slim 7x with a Snapdragon X Elite starting at $189.99 let's hit this pre-order and see if there's anything that we can customize and oh there doesn't look like there's any options on this we get Windows 11 home we get the they do list it is the 78 I'm so happy to see these other manufacturers where Microsoft won't tell us what this chip is you should know what you're buying especially when you're pre-ordering stuff that's kind of a big deal 16 gigs of RAM and a 1 tbyte SSD so that's pretty good and it is pcie so again hopefully we can upgrade that later and everything else here is pretty on point uh we've got Wi-Fi 7 we've got Bluetooth 5.3 we've got a 3K OLED this is a solid looking system and again opposite what where we were with um the surface really the advantage is becoming um what what manufacturers are letting us upgrade the RAM 16 gabt of RAM is has been for a while a nice Step Up amount of ram I think the bare minimum for kind of a mediocre experience on Windows you can get by with 8 gigabyt of ram but it's not nice 16 gigabytes now become sort of that nicer more fluid experience you don't have to worry about Chrome eating up all of your RAM if you have more than three tabs open but the tricky thing about leaning into AI if you think you might be interested in some of these other AI tools and these AI plugins and these AI features AI eats up Ram it's similar to what we've seen on a number of phones one of the reasons why is because how much information AI will need to access test and then reference and then store when you're doing some of these AI models that goes directly into your RAM so unfortunately now I think 16 is kind of going to is going to be kind of lean once you hit co-pilot and it's hitting the mpu and the mpu is thirsty for information that information is going to live in your RAM well if you only have 16 gbt of RAM and 16 gabt of ram was good for a Windows operating system now I think 16 GB of RAM is going to start to feel a little painful if you're really digging into that AI but this is not the only Lenovo oh no no no no we also have a think pad and this thing looks real good it's also real spendy the ThinkPad t14s Gen 6 I'm getting a little hot under the collar here oh we got all the seamless connections fortify your digits secure it's got a dazzling display all the stuff we know it's going to be real cool all right here's our spec sheet Snapdragon X Elite with Qualcomm Orion 12 cores I am so disappointed that Lenovo isn't listening in the tech specs this is let Le let's let's shift over let's see if we hit the pre-order if it's going to tell us in the pre-order what ship this is using ah here we go so it's the 78 this is a beefy system but we're not getting the top-of-the-line chip so we're building in the extra $60 for Windows 11 Pro we are stepping up to 32 GB of RAM and they say it's soldered but again I really feel it's just a part of the S so not that it's like Ram that is literally physically soldered into a motherboard that's not the most important distinction got a 1 tab SSD this uh it steps us down to an IPS display um and it's actually a lower resolution than the um than the than the screen on the yoga but again this is going to be a more business grade machine a warranty threeyear on-site the yoga is warranty one-ear corer or carry in I got to say just as like an actual honest reaction in this moment that makes me a little sad I was hoping to see $2700 that we were going to be stepping up into um something a little bit more workstation we know that there's a build of the X Elite that has a power management curve that's different than what we tested the systems that we tested were fanless so the thinnest the lightest um that was really important for Qualcomm to show off sort of what they felt the base level performance of The X Elite would be and we thought that was really impressive let alone knowing that there is a version of the chip that's meant to be um actively cooled so when the chip runs hot it's going to run fans just like an Intel or an AMD part I was hoping to see a ThinkPad that was using one of those higher tier chips with active cooling so that we could see maybe an even higher tier of performance $2,700 we're even stepping outside of the Microsoft tax where the surface laptop looks like kind of a better buy than what Lenovo is putting out here unless you're talking about corporate use that it Department use where you need to have kind of an executive machine and it needs to come with three years of more white glove kind of service for someone like me a a mobile content creator that's not really going to be the big hook for me I'm going to want a slight I'm going to want a better performance per price okay now checking out a couple other companies here we also got announcements from as seus and I don't believe I see any type of pre-order page but this is the Vivo book S15 if I remember correctly from their YouTube presentation their starting price with 16 gigs of RAM and 512 gigs of storage was going to be around 12 or $1,300 ai ai ai super thin and light but I do like the port selection here on the Asus full-size HDMI we got a 3.5 mm head uh headphone jack it was always stupid to remove that from tablets and phones it's it's strong I I know you all were worried worry not the Asus is strong smell isn't everything all right slim strong sophisticated it's an allmetal body design up to 75 total tops up to 45 watt Asus I so I don't think it's telling us it just says ex Elite processor and lightning fast 32 gigs of RAM if this is a $1,200 machine with 32 gigs of RAM and a terabyte of storage that's a monster price for this system to come in if it's also what looks like it's running one of the more powerful variants of the X Elite so let's see number five maximum RAM capacity may vary according to device configuration maximum SSD capacity may vary according to device configuration so I can't configure any of these devices I'm going to try one more thing here just to look switch to the Us website oh it literally just updated right now I've I've been setting up this video for a little while and it was not here so so we do have okay so this is actually pretty good I'm sorry I know you just watched me watch a website so here let me click back into the screen this is from the Asus e store now uh this just fired up while I was recording this video and we've got let's see a 3K display that's really good it's an OLED that's really good 16 gigb of ram I don't love that but a spacious 1 TB SSD it just says 12 core processor with a Qualcomm adreno GPU but for 6 18 gigs of RAM and a terabyte of storage now we're at $1,300 $1,300 Asus Just Came Out Swinging I would say opposite some of the HP and Dell systems different configurations if you want one of the prettiest displays on a laptop and you want a good amount of storage space um that's a pretty good combo and that's coming in roughly the base model price for a lot of these other systems and configurations I mean even includes Windows hello I mean even the webcam is a pretty decent spec and they're claiming it's mil uh mil standard 810h for drop and shock resistance now uh one of the other companies that announced of course as a competitor sort of is a lower price system we have the Swift 14 AI from Acer but again I don't see any like I just refreshed this I don't see any like where to shop or where to buy I have no idea what the pricing on this is but they're boasting Wi-Fi 7 environmental impacts AI stuff is Nifty I guess it's a really lightweight design same mpu tops performance 45 tops uh Wi-Fi 7 it's got security and privacy built in but I don't know what that means oh so it looks like they're going to be offering options with either the Snapdragon X+ or the Snapdragon X Elite one of the things I think is kind of interesting if we look at the difference between the X+ in the X Elite is really just kind of a difference in CPU uh design it looks like our GPU and mpu are really similar arm architecture but it doesn't say what arm chip it is they do talk about the 70w hour battery 30% power efficiency over the Apple M2 Max but I guess that's what they're kind of comparing against in terms of performance I don't know and memory and storage so it looks like it's up to 32 gigs of RAM and up to 1 tbte SSD and they are also saying it is a pcie Gen 4 SSD I'm really hoping that all of these companies that are listing you know what that that they have a pcie SSD that all of these are going to be upgradeable I don't know I mean like uh Acer I'm I'm playing with some acers right now some of the core Ultra sevens you know they might not always be the most exciting or the most Progressive designs but this is looking really really trim I I wish there were a few extra ports on here we've got a couple USBC they're USB 4 USB C's a couple USB as's and then a headphone jack I would love to see on some of this space I know it's really hard when you're trying to make the PC this slim I would love to see an HDMI I just think it's going to be so fun when we've got options like these types of laptops you're traveling you plug it into a TV and maybe you can do some some light gaming um compared to where we were with the last generation of arm chips those older way less powerful chips could still kind of play through games like control if you just whacked back all of the graphics settings I'm going to have to reach out to the folks at Acer like I've really liked the Acer Swift and if I can go Hands-On with the Swift 14 AI I think that would be really fun I just wish we could see what this what their price point was was going to arrive at let me just try one more time I'm going to go all the way home I'm going to literally refresh the P refresh the page here let's go to AI ready this is the big it's the Swift 14 Ai and they don't have it listed core Ultra 7 coree Ultra 7 core Ultra 5 all right well moving right along uh we're going to wrap this video up looking at Samsung the galaxy book for Edge and let's go ahead and pre-order let's just go straight to the pre-order okay Samsung is coming in a little higher priced a Windows 11 home machine but we do have options for the X Elite okay so this is pretty good uh Windows 11 home starts at $349.99 this looks like it's this is with a tradein you've got to be kidding me so wait a minute hold on we're going to say no tradein so we're seeing you the total is $349.99 and under it is saying out of a out of 17299 okay I think I I think I get this if we're pre-ordering Samsung says this is a $1,700 starting price system but during pre-order you can get it for $ 13499 and then you can play with some tradein deals to save up to $500 on the price of the system I guess that's what they're saying I guess that makes sense but we have the 3.4 GHz Snapdragon X Elite then we also have the 3.8 so I'm assuming this is the 78 chip and this might be the 80 or the 84 Samsung might have the highest performance variant of the X Elite but now looking at this website this is where I get a little cranky we only have one memory and storage configuration 16 gbt of RAM and one terabyte of storage and the one terabyte of storage is not listed as pcie or nvme it's listed as e ufs we use ufs storage in our phones but that makes me very anxious that we won't be able to upgrade the storage on this system if it's like how storage is built into our phones this Pi might be baked comparing and contrasting the different galaxy books we have the book four the book four Ultra and this is the book four Edge that's their Edge AI model with the Snapdragon I'm going through we got a fingerprint reader oh five speakers on the 16 in that's what we're looking at is a 16inch uh galaxy book for Edge and it looks like like okay so here's this is kind of exciting if you're looking for the highest performance version of the X Elite Samsung seems to be offering up the highest performance version so they list the 80 and the 84 so unlike a lot of these other manufacturers that are using the lowest tier X Elite chip Samsung is using medium and high so that is pretty cool there aren't a lot of options if you're trying to shop the the top end of the ex Elite spectrum and that's where we're getting this 3.8 GHz clock speed okay so it is the X Elite 84 but there is no option for changing the ram Samsung is not listing what kind of storage they're using in any of their laptops so I cannot find on the site right now even on the other Galaxy books if they're using you know an mvme drive that's uh you know upgradeable or replaceable if that's a part you can get to which is also really disappointing because Samsung makes some really good ssds for the 16in and you want the higher performance X Elite you only have the option of 16 GB of RAM and one tbte of e ufs storage I got to say out of all of these systems oh and sorry that is right now on pre-order sale for $1,749 199 normally $ 22998 so where the surface laptop uh can can climb to a higher price but you know it's probably using a lower performance version of the X Elite but you can configure it with 32 and 64 gigs of RAM and you know you should be able to replace that SSD if you want to expand storage later it looks like Samsung is baking this configuration and if you don't buy it on a pre-order or if you don't have a good tradein out of all the systems and configurations I kind of feel the least whelmed by Samsung I I think there's probably going to be a lot of really cool stuff in the build and I'm sure the Samsung display is going to look gorgeous but against something like the Vivo book from Asus maybe even the XPS if you kind of like that XPS style or the surface laptop itself doubling or quadrupling the amount of ram I think that's actually going to make a bigger impact on system performance than having the highest clock speeds so that was a ton of talking and my voice I'm about to blow out my voice again I'm going to go ahead and wrap this up here folks I am super excited about this next wave of Windows laptops I've been preaching arm chips for consumers for so long and it it seems like we're finally here at a tangible place where these systems make sense the software is a bit more robust it's a bit more mature and now we get the benefits of systems that can run longer on battery power and at higher performance levels without needing to plug them in I'm going to be pulling the trigger on one of these systems today maybe a Lenovo maybe a Microsoft Surface laptop try and reach out to my friends at a s like can I get in on a pre-order for that Vivo book I'm not entirely sure which system would you pick up today if you were shopping a new laptop and you wanted to try something windows on arm if you wanted to try something Qualcomm ex Elite I can't tell you in this video now which one I'm going to buy today but the first people who are going to figure that out are the folks on my patreon that's patreon.com someguy a huge thank you to all the people that support over on that patreon as they help keep this channel running they keep all of these videos and editorials a flowing they get early access to my uh articles and videos and reviews they get specific uh production Diaries I'm going to be giving them the behind the-scenes look as I shop for one of these systems as I choose one of these systems they'll be the first people to know and they'll also get the first look at my performance testing when one of these laptops is in house and I can finally start running it through its Paces patreon.com someguy these folks are basically the coolest in in the universe they're really fun to hang out with so I
