in the fall of the year it's very common for lake erie's walleye to be found in deep water mark and jake romanak of fishing 4-1-1 explain in detail how to use snap weights and also the precision trolling data 50 plus 2 trolling system to accurately present crankbaits in the deepwater strike zone [Music] so [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] got a little middle board's cranking yep and i got one going on my middle board here i actually got more than that jake you got one on your board i got one on my inside board i got one on my billboard we got three on right now no kidding i'm gonna go ahead and save away from you guys yeah you might want you might want to do that please i guess we found them so we'll just take them one of the time here there's no uh no hurry in a situation like this when you got more than one fish on doesn't do a lot of good to be able to reel them all to the back the boat at the same time so we'll just get jake's and then and then we'll go after mine you know we're in lake erie this morning and what we're doing is just spreading out and we're in search mode we're looking for walleyes and so the way we do that is we have crankbaits all over the water column we're going to show you exactly what it takes today to come out here on a body of water like lake erie and catch these suspended fish take that board off for me dad that snap weight's not going to be far behind this was a total lead of 83. so i got that snap weight 50 foot feels like a pretty nice fish dad dad just took that snap weight off and we're going to talk a lot about snap weights today because it's a great tool for getting crankbaits deep what i did is i had that snap weight clipped on the line and what that did was get that crankbait just a little bit deeper in the water column i didn't have to have such a long lead to get that bait down on that 25-30 feet of water where this fish bit pretty nice fish dad oh yeah good looking fish shakers oh my god chunky man halloween fish what that is that's not a big walleye by any stretch of the imagination but look at how thick that fish is that's what happens in the fall they get chunky and they get hungry and we're going to show you how to catch these fish today on fishing 401 well jake was fighting his fish i just slipped over here and grabbed one of mine and looks like maybe that third fish got off but right now we had two hookups and that's a good thing that is a good thing you know it really does feel good to be back out on yuri again it's been a while since we got down there to fish this area with 20 20 and kova and all that limited ability to travel and do things and we just didn't get on areas many times this year as what we normally would but it sure does feel to be good down here in ohio and fishing very familiar waters where of course we're in the port clinton area not too far from sandusky fishing out in an area right now they call the sandusky dump no secrets there it's a kind of a community spot that holds fish spring and fall you're almost always going to find a few fish out here in the sandusky dump not a slavosaurus but what uh not a bad fish nonetheless you got that good old reef runner stuck right in his nose nice fish dad chunky fish chunky chunky we're gonna take some home aren't we jake yeah absolutely all right well let me get him unhooked and in the live well and we'll see about finding some bigger ones well you know our first pass was pretty productive but the problem with open water fishing is eventually you're gonna troll through those fish you're gonna troll out of those fish and that's exactly what happened to us so when things go slow when you've got those fish behind you you have really no recourse but to pick up all your lines and run back up and set up well some people might suggest well why don't you just turn the boat around and then just troll right back the way you came when you look around you can see it's pretty bumpy out here today while it's possible to troll into the waves it's very difficult to control the boat when you're doing that it's much more efficient just to pick up your lines run back up and set up and come down with the wind at your back if you follow that philosophy for open water fishing it'll be a lot easier on your equipment and a lot easier on your body and i think you're going to catch more fish in the process special considerations are provided by cisco fishing systems and striker brands go early go late go prepared additional considerations provided by fishhawk electronics trolling without a fishhawk is called boating i got one on this inside board dad this is my deepest line this one has a banded on it with a snap weight and it's right down there in that 35 to 37 foot range so this is my deepest line that i have hopefully it's a little bit better quality fish because we uh we're marking a lot of fish and there's some some good quality marks down deep so i put a line down there deep to see if i couldn't uh get one of those to bite oh yeah it's pretty heavy dad excellent i just touched the waypoint on it so we'll get a we'll get a path here and basically what we're trying to do is we're trying to establish a line where we know we can consistently catch fish it's all yours thanks dad we're gonna have the snap weight coming up here what i'm gonna do is i'm to actually pull out my phone i'm going to show you exactly how we're doing this we're using an app called the precision trolling app to figure out where these baits are in the water column and i'm using the snap weight which my dad is going to unhook right now it's just an or16 release he's going to unclip that and that is what got that bait down deeper now a crank bait on its own has a hard time and will not dive to that 35 40 foot range for the most part so by adding weight to the line i can get that crankbait down to depth and not have to use a very long lead in this case i only had about 100 foot lead 100 feet of line out to get this bait down to that depth staying down nice dad down is good when they stay down they usually got shoulders there's a few more feet of line out so he's straight down nicely that's a nice fish a little better grade nice we'll take that all right we'll pull that fish up and show them off that's not a bad walleye dad there you go you know i have a feeling we're going to handle a lot of these fish today lake erie is just absolutely chucked full of walleye this size and i'm not complaining about that it's fall time frame these fish are fat man they are on the feed so i tell you what i'm gonna put this in the live well we're gonna get some more line set and hopefully we'll put a lot of these on camera today because lake erie's got a lot of them and i want to catch him you know this bait's been pretty good for me today i've caught a lot of fish on it this is a number 12 husky jerk from rapala it's kind of a staple of walleye fishing you just simply catch a lot of fish with this bait but by unhooking fish and just simply catching a lot of fish this back treble hook has really taken a beating so what i'm going to do is i'm going to replace it with a trokar treble hook right here an eagle claw trokar and it's just simple basically all i'm going to do is just take this and slide it up onto the split ring and slide the old treble hook off of it you know your crank baits are only as good as the hooks that are on them so you want to do is look through your crank baits when one starts getting beat up switch them out you're going to put a lot more fish in the boat but look at this hook right here it's time for that one to get retired my inside board just buried just buried jakers get that board released a little less pressure on them there we go you know the weather has not really turned out to be anything close to what we expected today and it has just been that kind of year we've had a lot wind a lot more wind than we expected and coming from directions we didn't expect i think a lot of this has to do with the hurricanes there's been a ton of hurricanes this year and that actually affects the great lakes if you can believe it or not yeah that fish is staying down nice dab yeah this is it seems like a solid fish seems like a solid fish oh yeah i love that feel it don't get much better than that just that would bend over double i can't put any more pressure on him oh yeah oh that is a good fish nice fish yeah they're getting thicker jake they're getting thicker look at that dorsal fin that sunshine on it that not pretty a beautiful fish there that is pretty love it special considerations are provided by precision trolling data and the lake st clear walleye association special considerations provided by the ultimate sports show tour michigan's elite sports shows [Music] eagle claw presents the 4-1-1 on fishing hey jake romanek here with fishing 4-1 television you know it is a brutal cold morning out here it's winter time in michigan but i got this cool package in the mail from lowrance and i had to get out on open water and give it a try and the technology that i'm talking about is called active target now this is a live sonar and i'm going to fish with this in the winter time a lot but i had to put it on the boat and i had to get out here and give it a try what i'm doing today is more of like an ice fishing style over open water basically i'm ice fishing in a boat right now so i wanted to show you this technology how it works maybe a little bit of information about it maybe you're looking at putting it on your boat the cool thing about the new live sonar or the active target from the rants is that it's compatible with two different lowrance units now now below i have the hcs live unit this unit has been on the market for the last couple years so if you already have a live unit on your boat this sonar the active target is going to be applicable to that unit the new unit on the block is called the elite fs and that's the unit that i have up here it's more of a a price point unit if you will a little bit more affordable for the budget but still compatible with this new active target sonar and so i have the active target on the top screen here showing exactly what it looks like and it's a different view if you're not used to a live style of sonar it's something that's going to be completely new for you it's a three-dimensional image on a 2d plane what i mean by that is actually on my rod right now i have a jigging shad wrap and when i lift up on it you can actually see that bait dart to the side now it's still on a flat screen so there's your 2d plane but it gives you more of a three-dimensional type view when you're looking at the image the other nice thing about this live active target sonar is the fact that it's real time so when i'm jigging up and down i can physically see that bait go up and down in the water column and when a fish comes up to investigate i can see that fish and i can kind of judge the attitude of the fish if he comes up really quick maybe i'll come up in the water column and try to get that fish to bite maybe he comes real slow so maybe i need to slow my cadence down a little bit but the live sonar allows you to see more of the activity level of those fish now the active target comes in three different variations meaning that there is a down view a forward view in what they call a scout view which is basically taking the sonar tipping it on the side and giving you more of a landscape type picture of what you're looking at right now today i've been just using the down view simply because i'm driving around finding the fish and once i find that fish i can drop down and catch that fish it's a good fish right there nice we'll pull him out of the net you know active target from lowrance is brand new and this really is going to change the way that we walleye fish look at that fish right there that is a gorgeous fish being able to see these fish actively chase the bait is just incredible to me it's going to change the way that we walleye fish here in the future it's going to put a pile of fish in the boat my name is jake romanek if you're looking for more information on active target from lowrance go to lorance.com and check it out that one's heavy that one is heavy just pull the encore board under water and that don't happen very often when that happens generally that's a good quality fish sorry i can't tell i think we're still there dad yeah this fish was just coming with me i thought for a split second here that i lost him but the fish must have just surged towards me and look around there's plenty of surges here thank you we stayed buckled up staying down pretty good staying down good we'll see how he uh how he comes here at the last second that one's chunky a little bit more solid shoulders on that one it's a solid fish not a lake erie giant but definitely a good class of fish that we're catching today i'll take those all day long and hopefully that's exactly what we have let's do a little crankbait tutorial we'll talk about how the crankbaits that we use to catch these lake erie walleyes changes as the fall progresses today is halloween day and so it's still relatively early in the fall and the water is relatively warm it's 55 degrees and so the baits that seem to work a little bit better in these warmer waters tend to be crankbaits like the reef runner here the 800 series that have a lot of action what i mean by a lot of action the reef runner has got a lot of this sachet in the water side to side and when the water is relatively warm fish are relatively active and they do really well they seem to produce really well we're in this transition right now where the water is getting cooler and another bait that has a little bit more subtle action like the deep husky jerk here has been good for us today and it will continue to be good throughout the rest of the fall instead of this bait having a sachet like this it has more of a roll like this in the water it's a little bit more subtle action if you will and it's a good bait to be looking at when that water is 50 55 and even a little colder and going down towards the 40s now eventually you know they're going to keep fishing these fish until it freezes here so you get into november december even january eventually the water is going to be in the mid 30s or low 30s when you get water that cold you need even more subtle action lures and what we have here is a perfect 10 and it's a stick bait and as a stick bait it doesn't have any of this sachet it has just a little tiny roll in it very little action and so the progression is higher action lures when the water's a little warmer lower action lures when the water gets colder and you have to follow that progression in order to stay on these fish and consistently catch them from october november december and even right up until freeze up in january special considerations are provided by trail master trailers and iowa corporation special considerations are provided by procure ruthlessly effective bait sense you know one of the most important tools to trolling is understanding where your lures are in the water column and today we're fishing over that 40 foot of water and these fish are anywhere from that 20 to 30 foot down now that's a very small margin of error basically so what you want to do is you want to be able to get that bait right in that zone what we're using is the precision trolling app now the precision trolling app comes on either apple or android and i can pull this up here and just about any crank bait that you can think the fish is in the precision trolling app in this case we've been catching a lot of fish on let's say a deep husky jerk today that rapala d hufsky jerk is in the app it's also in the app with a snap weight now earlier i mentioned snap weight fishing and snap weights are a great tool to get your lure deeper without putting a ton of line out now it's one thing you want to remember is a crank bait can only go so deep so by putting weight in front of the line you're going to be artificially getting that bait deeper and the nice thing is precision trolling makes that super easy with the 50 plus two method now here on the app i can open up the app and you can see basically what i do is put the crank bait 50 feet back put the two ounce weight snap weight on the line and then put additional line out now if i want to go 30 feet down the app is going to tell me exactly what i have to do to get that bait down to that depth now precision trolling has made trolling easy in that regard because i tell you one thing there's a lot of variables when it comes to fishing but the precision trolling app cuts those variables down and helps you put your baits in the right zone the last few fish that we caught have been higher up in the water column so i'm almost to the point where i'm like you know what it's the higher fish that are going to bite and the snap weight goes off so you never really know and we go to a fishery like lake erie there are so many fish out here that there's fish high there's fish low there's fish in between and there's different times of the day where it seems like the deeper fish will go or maybe the higher fish will go so it is good to have a lot of lines out and cover that water column because you really never know which one's going to bite this fish is staying down pretty nice and he's getting close oh he's right here yeah that's a nice fish here's a nice fish gotcha another nice eater fish there dad i'll get this one live well and get set back up catch some more if you're interested in giving snap weights a try with crankbait fishing what i suggest you do is start out with a kit no r20 kit here that offshore produces comes with a good assortment it comes with an assortment of snaps the or16 snaps some split rings to go with them and then a really nice assortment of weights half ounce weights three quarter one ounce one and a half two and even three ounce weights so one kit is going to give you everything you need to get started fishing snap weights once you've had an opportunity to fish with this kit if you decide that you want to expand and have more two ounce or you want to have more three ounce weights those are sold in two packs if you need more or16s those are also sold in two packs so start out with a kit and later on if you need more you can buy it as you need it and one of the most important things that i feel like has kept us on fish today is by basically just beating up a small active pot of fish it's not very big it's basically the stretch of a football field but there's some fish that are willing to bite in this stretch and we have gone over it and over and over at it and every time we go over it we seem to get a bite or two so we've gone a lot of places without catching fish today but this little spot that we're at right now has been good for us so circling back over those active pods super important i'll take that every day of the week jake keep coming beautiful gold color a little bit closer very nice fish now that is a beautiful lake erie walleye right there just look at how fat that fish is i mean he is literally bulging he is so fat they are putting a feed bag on in the fall hey my name is jake romanek and you've been watching fishing 401 if you get a chance come out to lake erie in the fall draw you up some lake erie walleyes and you're going to have a great time we'll see you here same time same place next week closed captioning is provided by lakeside motorsports michigan's premier marine and power sports company fishing 4-1-1 is brought to you by offshore tackle
