[Music] over two years ago I uploaded the very first episode of what would soon become one of my most popular series and ever since smash ultimate was announced I have had a steady flow of people asking me if I would revive that series for ultimate and so here we go it's time for super smash brothers ultimate costume origins we're gonna be doing it a little differently this time and we're gonna follow the theme of smash ultimate meaning that we're going to be going through each fighter in order based on the game that they premiered in so that of course means that we are going to start with Mario Mario's design has been slightly refreshed in Smash ultimate giving him minor updates based on his Odyssey design for one copy is included in his upbeat and one of his taunts for another his render also shows his hat is more stitched rather than the solid consistent material that he had in previous games his first recolor is based on his appearances and a pair of golf games released in the late 80s and early 90s family computer golf u.s. course was released for the Famicom in Japan in NES open tournament golf was released of course for the NES both of these games feature Mario in a golf outfit based on the American flag this costume was also later used in Super Mario Odyssey as one of the purchasable outfits the blue and pink recolor is based on Mario's appearance on the Japanese box art for Mario Brothers for the Famicom Mario's black outfit originally started as a more brown and yellow color in Smash Brothers for the Nintendo 64 this color was based on formant spike from wrecking crew Mario was the playable character and wrecking crew and Foreman spike served as one of the obstacles in the game but ever since melee this color has simply been a black-and-gray outfit Mario's green costume again started out as a different color scheme in smash 64 this green and orange scheme served as the Green Team color which was based on his appearance on the Japanese box art for wrecking crew from melee onward this orange color became Brown serving as a sort of inverted version of Lois appearance from the arcade version of Mario Brothers next Mario has a purple color scheme which references Waluigi Mario sports this look in Paper Mario the thousand-year door when Mario equips both the L emblem and the W emblem the colors fuse and gives him clothes similar to waluigi x' mario seventh outfit is brand new to smash dressing mario up as builder mario this comes from the artwork for super mario maker dressing mario in a construction workers hardhat and a tool belt this was also available for purchase as the builder helmet and builder outfit in super mario odyssey and speaking of Odyssey Mario's final outfit is also brand new to smash based on Mario's appearance in a wedding tuxedo and top hat from Super Mario Odyssey Donkey Kong's design has been pretty much unchanged in Smash ultimate he is however more expressive a point made during one of the Smash Brothers Direct presentations decays first color resembles an actual gorillas color which is black the tie that he wears is based on the player - donkey kong tie found in Donkey Kong Country for the Super Nintendo the next color gives Donkey Kong red fur and a blue tie the fur most closely resembles the original Donkey Kong's color palette from the Donkey Kong arcade game next up is a drastic color change making Donkey Kong purple this is a color that has changed over the years initially starting as a deep blue referencing the other past color schemes Donkey Kong had and multiplayer games like Mario Golf over the years it has become more and more purple becoming more of a smash original than a reference Donkey Kong's green fur is a smash original as well starting in smash 64 as this weird green skin toned color before becoming the normal colour that we know in melee Donkey Kong King of Swing has a similar color in its jungle jam mode however the smash color predates this Donkey Kong's white fur was referred to as Yeti Donkey Kong on the brawl dojo website this lines up with the resemblance the swap bears to Eddie the mean old Yeti from the Donkey Kong Country animated series this color is commonly mistaken as the super Kong from Donkey Kong Country Returns however the color orig in Brawl and thus predate super comp donkey kong's yellow color looks similar to the multiplayer color found in mario golf for the n64 and finally we have a cotton candy pink color scheme which ties a direct reference to jr. the second from Donkey Kong jr. math link received the biggest design update he's ever had in smash ultimate making him now the champion link from breath of the wild however he has also joined the same league as other characters who have two designs and smash his alternate look is based on the hero of the wild set which of course is his more traditional appearance but again is also based on breath of the wild the first champion tunic color is a red one which is based on the Hylian tunic a tunic which can be purchased in breath of the wild the first hero of the wild color is of course the fierce deity link from majora's mask which has been adapted for this version of link next is a dark blue tunic which is based on the Royal Guard uniform and breath of the wild the colours of link shield matched the Royal Guard shield which itself was based on the Hylian Shield in breadth of the wild next up is a more muted green hero of the wild skin which is presumably based on Twilight Princess links color scheme then we have links sporting a tunic based on his appearance as a resident of Skyloft at the beginning of Skyward Sword and lastly a full Dark Link set resembling the dark armor set from breath of the wild Samus keeps her design from Smash 4 which is a modified version of her power suit from Metroid Other M her first color option is based directly off of the fusion suit from Metroid Fusion two of samus's previous appearances matched the pink suit that she has in Smash the first is her sprite when she has missiles equipped in the very first Metroid game the second is in Super Metroid and the game sprite for the gravity suit samus is brown suit matches the color scheme of the dark suit for Metroid Prime to echos the purple suit comes from the actual artwork of the gravity suit across various Metroid games her green suit is known as mass-produced Samus which is a reference to the Gundam series in which mass-produced Gundams have a green base her white suit also comes from Metroid Prime to echos this one being based on the light suit and finally she has a brand new color added to smash ultimate which replaces the Dark Samus color scheme due to dark samus now being a playable fighter this color is a black suit with yellow accents and it can have two possible origins the first is a powered trooper which was a space pirate wielding a weaker version of samus's arsenal the second is candan a hunter from metroid prime hunters because yoshi's design is so relatively basic he hasn't changed much in this latest smash game only receiving very minor tweaks his first color is red Yoshi which originated in Super Mario World and can shoot fireballs after having a shell in its mouth blue Yoshi also originated in Super Mario World and has the ability to fly while holding his shell in its mouth yellow Yoshi's again originated in Super Mario World and basically ground pounds when a shell is in its mouth pink Yoshi's first appearance is in Super Mario World to Yoshi's Island and is the color of the playable Yoshi for each world second level the cyan Yoshi also first appeared in Yoshi's Island and is the color of the playable Yoshi for the third level of every world purple Yoshi yet again first appeared in Yoshi's Island as the playable yo sheet for each worlds fifth stage and finally smash ultimate gave Yoshi a brand new costume based on Yoshi's look from Yoshi's crafted world which is the upcoming Yoshi game coming to switch in 2019 Kirby has also pretty much stayed the same throughout all of smash having very few changes to his design which of course makes sense given that he's so basic yellow Kirby has officially been stated to be based on ki be the player to Kirby from Kirby's Dream course blue Kirby is based on ice Kirby which originally came from Kirby super star red Kirby comes from fire Kirby also from Kirby super star green Kirby looks exactly like plasma Kirby from Kirby Super Star Ultra the monochrome color swap is based on kirby sprite from the very first kirby game Kirby's Dreamland for the Gameboy the orange color comes from the orange spray paint in Kirby and the amazing mirror and Kirby squeak squad and lastly curve has a color based on Meta Knight without his mask Fox's design is constantly being tweaked each and every smash game and this one is no different being based on the latest Star Fox game Star Fox zero for the Wii U Fox's first color is a reimagined dark Fox this color first originated back in Super Smash Brothers Brawl brawl had a pattern of dark color swaps for many of its characters and this one has stayed with Fox since brawl moving with each new design next Fox has a red jumpsuit which is a matching color to fox's player1 costume from Star Fox assault versus mode the green jumpsuit draws inspiration from the player for costume from assaults versus mode orange is a revival of the orange color from smash 64 and melee which comes from Falco's Star Fox 64 jumpsuit next up Fox has a black green and grey jumpsuit and from everything I've been able to research I believe that this one is a smash original costume Fox's yellow jumpsuit draws inspiration from his player three outfit from assaults versus mode and finally is a costume that originally in smash 4 drew inspiration from Wolfe although this has been altered to give Fox purple fur in order to distinguish between Fox and wolf because wolf is now present in ultimate in smash ultimate Pikachu received an update for two of its alternate costumes previously they were all the male variant however the last two were changed to be female you can tell by the shape of its tail Pikachu's first alt gives it its shiny Pikachu coloration which was incidentally based on a coloration from Pokemon Stadium the cap has similarities to Red's cat from pokemons red and blue next up is the green headband which comes from Brendan in Pokemon emerald this color is also a possible coloration a Pikachu can have in stadium next up is Ethan's hat which comes from pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver then we have the party hat Pikachu which is a smash original but has also been in the game since smash 64 and is only missing from one game brawl and the last male Pikachu has Callum's default hat and glasses from Pokemon X&Y next is the first female Pikachu and she wears Celine's casual cat from Pokemon Sun and Moon and the final Pikachu all is Pikachu Libre which was originally one of the cosplay Pikachu's from Pokemon Omega Ruby and alpha sapphire and is also a playable fighter in pokken tournament unlike his brother Luigi didn't receive any detailed tweaking to his design staying relatively the same since the previous smash game first up is orange Luigi which has a similar color scheme to Mario's appearance on the box art for pinball next is a pink costume which has been in Smash since the very first game referred to as strawberry Luigi on the smash 64 website it matches Luigi's appearance in wrecking crew blue Luigi resembles Mario's color scheme from the American box art for Mario Brothers easy peasy this one is fire Luigi just like his brother Luigi also has a waluigi color scheme though the L on his hat is purple instead of yellow next up is a dark blue and green color scheme which vaguely resembles his appearance in a Japanese only super mario film though his shirt is more green yellow now than exclusively yellow and finally we have a green and yellow outfit which resembles his color scheme in the Atari XE version of Mario Brothers next up we have des the psychic kid from Annette his design hasn't really changed at all in ultimate first up Ness has an outfit based on FUEL a character who is ironically not even from neces own game but a non playable character in mother 3 according to the smash 64 website the yellow and black outfit is based on the Japanese baseball team the Hanshin Tigers whose color scheme is also black and yellow next up is a green alt with a yellow and orange shirt which appears to be a smash original then we have a blue outfit which very vaguely resembles the color scheme of neces younger sprite from earthbound then Ness has a black and purple outfit I can't speak to the colors of this outfit but of course it has the sprite for a mr. Saturn on it which is one of the most iconic mascot of the mother series nests also has a master belch outfit although this one has always puzzled me because while the color scheme is not at all the same as master belch it's definitely based on his design and finally Ness has a color scheme based on the new game menu from earthbound speeding his way into Smash next is Captain Falcon the character who hasn't had his own game in over a decade first up he has a black outfit which is based on the clothes that an actor wore in a Japanese commercial for f-zero X next up he has a color scheme based entirely on captain Falcons rival and his literal clone blood Falcon captain Falcons green outfit matches the wild goose which is the vehicle of another driver in f-zero v outfit is a more saturated blue which is based on captain Falcons original appearance in F 0 and F 0 GP Legend next up is my personal favorite the white and pink which comes from Jody summers appearance in f-zero X the all-gold outfit could be based on yet another vehicle from the captain's origin series this time the golden fox and finally a color scheme that vaguely matches rick wheeler which is captain Falcons successor in f-zero GP legend Rick wheeler becomes the second Captain Falcon the final character in smash 64 is roster is Jigglypuff who has had many many hats over the years first is a hibiscus flower while this currently resembles Phoebe the Elite Four member in Hoenn Jigglypuff actually had this in melee which predates the 3rd generation of Pokemon and thus makes this a smash original next up jiggly puff wears Leafs hat who's the female protagonist in FireRed and LeafGreen originally this was the only reference to leaf in smash though of course now she is one of the playable protagonist for pokemon trainer in ultimate next we have a straw hat which comes from the Hat that the bug catcher trainers wear throughout the Pokemon games Jigglypuff's green hat kind of has a weird connection although it's very fitting this hat comes from the kirby games when Kirby copies the sleep ability Jigglypuff's use of singing and rest makes it very closely related to sleep so use of this hat is a nice cute little nod to the kirby series then Jigglypuff has a bow which is reminiscent of her red palette swap in smash 64 she also has a nurse's hat which of course comes from the Pokemon Center nurse in Pokemon X&Y and finally she wears yet another female protagonist hat this time it's Serena's default head wear from Pokemon X&Y and that is everyone from smash 64 these fighters have experienced quite the evolution across all of the smash games experiencing more powerful hardware as well as more detailed alternate outfits next time we'll be covering the melee newcomers and their costume origins thank you guys so so much for watching I am so happy to finally be able to bring you the series that so many of you have been looking forward to if you enjoyed this video be sure to hit the like button if you guys are new be sure to subscribe I will see you guys next time with the mail a costume origins peace out and I hope you have an awesome day [Music]
