i was just dumbstruck by their willingness to overpay retail by so much when i knew what the actual cost was what does everyone spend money on that you refuse to spend money on daily lunches at work mostly the reason is they don't like to prepare it at home themselves occasionally i treat myself it stays special this way i've seen younger guys that were nearly broke go out for lunch nearly every day they laughed at me for bringing my lunch until i showed them on paper how much money i saved by not spending ten dollars a day on fast food buying textbooks from the school store they're cheaper online to buy and cheaper even still to rent someone replied i bought the used version of a textbook online for thirty dollars and i bought the year subscription to the electronic part direct from the website for 49 the university bookstore wanted 100 for the online code and 180 for the bundle expensive shoes i.e jordans for my four-year-old child especially when he was even younger kids feet grow so fast it is just pointless and expensive and they shouldn't care about the brand i knew a woman whose child's father liked him and named brand gear and could afford it she couldn't but her son would be tricked out head to toe when he outgrew his shoes she would give whatever fit to whichever co-worker needed them for their kids including brand new jordans dad never had an issue with it and as such their son is one of the kindest gentlest children who knew the value of sharing at a very young age a new iphone every year it seems like they come out with one advertise for a couple of days then are like oh we already need a new phone out on the market so when we sell this one it can be like 2 000 then just come out with a new one it's pointless it's clearly planned obsolescence they can't make more if you don't have a reason to buy a new phone and the fact they lock your device if you try to repair it yourself i got my lg g6 off ebay 64 gig with otterbox case for 35 bucks going on its second year i can replace the screen for seven bucks charging ports are three bucks maybe i'm just cheap but apple doesn't get my money good delivery apps not like domino's or pizza hut type delivery grubhub doordash postmates i don't like paying more for food than paying more for a delivery fee plus the damn tip i don't have a problem giving five dollars for a pizza delivery but i have a hard time paying also knowing the app to a percentage of the tips this was after the scandal off grubhub taking tips or one of the app companies cigarettes my husband smoked and it felt like money going down the drain each month then he quit smoking and started vaping went from spending two thousand five hundred dollars per year to about three hundred dollars liquid and devices per year and he feels better looking back i have no clue how he afforded to smoke it always amazes me when i walk into a poor person's home the home can be falling apart they have no money for food the kids are in rags but they have enough beer and cigarettes to survive a nuclear winter as a woman all the upkeep i'm lucky that i have pretty natural hair so i just wear it long and get it trimmed about once a year a lot of my friends spend more than 200 every eight weeks to get their hair done manicures can be fifty dollars every month or so fake eyelashes can be more than one hundred fifty dollars for the set and then you have to get them filled every few weeks for seventy dollars microblading your eyebrows is a thing now that costs 600 every year almost everyone i know has started getting botox and i have no idea how much that costs waxing a full egg can be 80 if you get a full brazilian and underarms lip etc you're looking at dollar 150 plus every three to four weeks if you don't wax you can get laser hair removal which i've been quoted about 800 and no guarantee you won't need more treatment skin care face masks hair masks tonics creams lotions a whole drugstore worth of bottles and tubes and tubs under your bathroom sink also don't forget the expectation that you wear makeup and have decent outfits for multiple different occasions don't get me started on shapewear and shoes and accessories i honestly dream about winning the lottery and doing all of the above plus having a personal trainer and a chef and a stylist and just looking like that kind of woman but honestly who can afford it lottery tickets the tax for stupid people i worked at a gas station in college people would line up at the cash machine on paycheck day by the dozens zero out their account for the month buy a carton of cigarettes and stand at the counter doing one dollar scratchers until they spend it all one of the regulars hit a 500 and just stayed there all day like 11 hours or something every two dollars or free ticket just kept buying them until she ran out children between money and anxiety children are a choice my wife and i have decided we are not making because yes children are a choice those of us in north america and europe know where they come from and know how to prevent them everything gets more expensive with children food rent or mortgage vehicles accessories insurance in 18 years education will probably be unfathomable expensive because that's the trend here in the u.s and god damn it i have enough anxiety about my dog i would break down if i had to worry about children alcohol and nightclubs and bars extortionate where i'm from my friends used to do the vip at nightclubs downtown minneapolis to even be in there you have to buy a bottle of something and they only have premium brands so like a 750 of gray goose for 150 to 200 i was managing a liquor store back then and was just dumbstruck by their willingness to overpay retail by so much when i knew what cost was this is insane but that's how they got to meet local celebrities or whatever designer handbags i've seen people defend it with well my one thousand dollars purse will last a lot longer than the 20 purses from walmart or target and that's true i've bought 20 purses from walmart and target that started to fall apart after a year but there's a huge difference between a cheap purse from target and one that costs hundreds or thousands of dollars i got one from jc penney's a few years ago that has held up great and still looks new i think i paid around 40 for it after a coupon and i'm not knocking people who want to buy designer purses if that's how you want to spend your money go for it but don't pretend like it's somehow more cost efficient or the only option for getting a quality item almost all of video streaming services at the same time i don't need netflix hulu disney plus and prime video if i can only watch one at a time i rather rotate services i never have more than one i'll have hulu for a few months get bored of what's on there go to netflix for a while get bored of what's on there right now i've had just disney plus since it came out getting kind of bored of it so time to switch soon strip clubs i was at a bachelor party at a strip joint one of my friends remarked how degrading it is for women i looked around at the horny guys shelling out money for a girl to pay attention to them for a minute or two with whom they will not get laid by and said dude this is degrading to men a stripper even told me to smile more car maintenance once my car was out of warranty i learned how to do everything fluid brakes tire rotations it's pretty easy stuff and chris fix on youtube is an amazing teacher i need to change my spark plugs the dealership wanted 550 to change mine it's only a four-cylinder it's a 15 minutes job and the parts cost around 50 those collectible figures and statues they are way too overpriced occupy too much space and are dust collectors things just for the sake of things i'm a big fan of lego and have a few friends who are the same when i feel like building something new i build something new for my already too large collection for what i typically build my friends will just buy a new set to fill up a shelf after spending one or two hours building these sets are very expensive as far as one to two hours of entertainment go and i don't think they get any more fun if not less building that then i do building some random crappy thing i invented right then coffee from coffee shops i don't understand the appeal of starbucks and the likes overpriced coffee and lousy service are not my cup of tea it's super easy to make good coffee at home a decent grinder and a french press will set you back 30 to 50 but you can get really good beans for dollar 15 16 of an ounce i actually really like the trader joe's barista's choice which is like six dollars per bag expensive meals like i understand eating sushi every week is neat and i do like sushi but one sushi meal costs as much as my entire week of eating my last roommates did this but they also got mad if i cooked because it made the house smell like food i pretty much only ate salads when i lived there because i couldn't cook in the kitchen like you know that's why houses have kitchens right but they even ate really nice meals every night and then would talk about how they didn't know why money was so tight they also went to starbucks every morning they had a coffee maker i tried the first month i was there to make coffee for everyone after wasting a bunch of coffee i just started making it for me [Music] new cars or car leases my car is 10 years old and i'm gonna keep it for at least another five hopefully all cars depreciate but it's a curve steeper at the outset than flattening i work from home in half for the past year so it mostly just sits in my garage and i run errands maybe once or twice a week so many people tell me i need a new car simply because mine is old and needs the occasional repair why on earth would i buy a new car that i'd have to make payments on when it's going to sit unused in my garage for 95 of the time just because my current car is old no thank you it's paid off the insurance is cheap the annual taxes on it are cheap and even the more expensive repairs it is needed have still cost significantly less than an entire new car interest i'd rather save up money and buy what i want later people often seem to want everything and immediately my partner and i have a decent income but even we acknowledge that we can't just go out and buy lots of expensive stuff without planning i like to say that we can afford anything but we can afford everything for an expensive holiday we start saving 12 months in advance or more we're currently redecorating a couple of rooms in our house but slowly last month we got a bookcase this month we got a big rug next month we plan to get a new door sure the end result is the same but it's great to see the place get nicer over time rather than getting one big instant gratification hit and we're not getting into any debt it's a similar story with the mortgage i have a frugal life partly because i don't want to spend 60 years paying off a mortgage and most of that money going on interest we have been able to pay off half a mortgage in five years and hope to be mortgage-free in another five essentially this whole thread summed up things you can get yourself food drinks delivery minor maintenance etc things that aren't worth getting new or have brand names cars phones laptops tablets clothing accessories furniture software slash books you can pirate off the internet etc things that really aren't necessary plastic surgery excessive makeup drugs useless overpriced gadgets online donations micro transactions strippers gambling etc thanks for listening to radio tts hit the subscribe button and activate the notification bell for more videos click the
