this video is about the ammunition that the slinger might use though to principle kind sling stones and sling bullets now sling stone might be a natural stone but natural stones with a nice and spherical are actually very very rare this one is about the right sort of size difficult to describe the the right size but it's um bigger than a golf ball smaller than a cricket ball sort of Satsuma size that sort of thing and this coming out of the sky and hitting you would definitely finish you off if it got you in the head and they would go to some lengths to find suitable stones going to the right riverbanks and shingle beaches and so forth but properly spherical ones are actually quite rare a very common sight size and shape of pebble is a sort of can you see how this pebble is you know it's nice and rounded no rest of it but it's definitely fatter at one end than at the other so it's heavier it one in the other and it's it's still not brilliant in its flight characteristics now when I was some practicing when I was at school in Dorset ice practices along riverbanks where there was about a six foot chalk cliff and used to get lumps big lumps of chalk rock that were very angered sort of cube-like and slinging those I was often amazed by how they would they would go apparently straight for a fair while and then veer off at a crazy angle the the the flight path of a more angular sling stone is completely unpredictable and definitely I've learned learned that they you go to along a lot of trouble to find nice spherical stones if you can get them they even were trouble all chipping stones to make them more round and even getting clay rolling into balls and firing it and making clay sling stones it was worth doing because they haven't better characteristics in flight another thing you can do with clay of course is you can heat it very very hot and then sling the very very hot stone say in a siege hoping that the land on the the thatch of a house and set fire to it I thought this is tremendously commonly used or effective tactic but history records that it was used sometimes the other thing you can do is use a bullet the Romans used to call them in glam days I have some here these are yep these are see the Roman Glen bays and they're much much smaller but of course lead this is what these are is very very dense and they're sort of fun they're not spheres actually they're slightly sort of rugby ball shaped you see that there was another kind which was acorn shaped I mean quite literally it's like a model of an acorn but by large they're this sort of shape sometimes these were cast on campaign we've got some quite entertaining sling bullets that have been found saying things like take that written on them megha Cleese hit you that sort of thing that needs little messages that work sometimes up to the minute some are actually in the shape of a man's thumb tip not because that was a great shape to be me because it seems that what they did they just found a sandy place stuck their thumb in the sand and poured molten lead into the thumb holes and so you end up with loads of little thumb shaped bits of lead though these are very small I can attest and I really really would not want to be hit by one of these if I just drop one just one inch ow to my head this at any speed would do your major mission now the Romans we know these were affected because the Romans actually developed a special pair of tongs for removing them from bodies yeah so that's the the gland it now I haven't personally slung any of these real one because well they're far too precious and I'd hate to lose one well I do have some modern fishing weights which are similar size and shape and maybe I'll have a go with one of these one of these days if I can find a way of recovering them you see a piece of lead coming down from a great height landing on earth will bury itself and if it's buried itself 150 yards away or whatever how am I going to find it now one idea is that I use the little thing for attaching it to fishing line and put a bit of red ribbon on it or something so it'd be pretty obvious where it is in the air and I should be able to see it when it lands but then of course I won't get accurate idea of how how far they can really go and how accurately because the ribbon will change its characteristics in flight so this is a problem so I have not actually personally tested sling blitz but one day hope to now you might think that a golf ball would be an excellent piece of ammunition because after all they're designed modern technology for going a very very long way I tried slinging golf balls and I can tell you it doesn't work I could in fact throw a golf ball by hand as far as I could sling it they're just not dense enough a golf ball is meant to you know choose what it does fly through the air a very long way by being springy the hard face of the the club hits it and it compresses and Springs off the club off into the off into the distance I was sent by New Zealand New Zealand sling enthusiast one of these golf cross golf balls which as you can see has the rugby ball shape so indeed this should go further but it still I didn't have any success with it it's it's just too light the the blitz go considerably further than the stones I know that much and history records that slingers regularly out ranged bowmen with them so one day I'm going to give it a go I don't know if they mi used the split the split braid style sling with bullets and so that's one of the reasons that I've got this sling with a small cup it's the use of the bully the fact this cup is wildly too big but I wanted to be able to use music with stones as well ok enough on ammo bye
