eddie's soldiers now i know what you're thinking you're like rachel why does it look like you threw hands with a tropical macaw did you get into a fight with somebody who was also icing a cake for a child's fifth birthday party why does it look like you dove face-first into a michael's craft aisle believe it or not friends i was feeling like i needed to change it up a little bit so i decided to do a fun minty turquoise eye for fun i didn't even do it dark i just did it like like a whisper of my eyeshadow is like the lacroix of eyeshadows like someone thought of turquoise in the next room kind of look you know we're starting small we need some more light oh oh god no oh no that's too much that's all right better and it's so freaking hot in vancouver right now it's it's hotter in vancouver than it is in l.a that's no i don't like that take it back though just like in last year's mid-year book freako tag i am sort of a sweaty mess right now but i'm having a much better time than i was last year like i was listening to some doji cat playing with some new finger paint and i'm drinking a delicious glass of juice totally not gin like i just want to you know go through a mid-year book freako tag because that's fine i've been seeing all over tech talk recently that's made me get my ass in gear to film this video so without further ado maybe grab a drink grab a snack and uh buckle up bestie let's do a mid yearbook freakout tag let's start the video before my eyebrows melt off number one of this tag is to talk about your favorite book of 2021 so far i caught that you saw it mine without a doubt is house of hollow by crystal sutherland this is one of the darkest creepiest eeriest most atmospheric unsettling books i have ever read in my life and it is perfection while i do enjoy a sexy fairy lord with an impressive wingspan my favorite kind of fairy are the kind that will like curse you to dance until you die kind of fairy this is about three sisters who when they were young went missing for a month in edinburgh and when they came back their eyes turned black their hair turned white and the media devoured them it's been 10 years and all of them have their own various careers and personalities although none of them will talk about what happened to them when they were children and suddenly when one of the sisters goes missing once again they all have to confront the terrifying month that none of them can remember this is one of the scariest fairy worlds that i've ever read and i know a lot of people will not like this because it is so weird and there's a lot of extended metaphorical purple prose but i happen to love that kind of thing and this did it for me and because it's my video i want to do a really quick shout out to my other favorite bucket this year we're cheating it's fine it's my video i can do whatever i want you can't tell me what to do you're not my real dad that is last night at the telegraph club by melinda lowe which is such a wonderful historical queer book about two lesbians in the 1950s in san francisco talking about underground queer clubs uh the lesbian scene and because our main character lily is chinese it goes into the racial prejudices and stereotypes that were affecting chinese people in san francisco in the cold war and she's also a scientist that talks about women in stem and feminism and it's just this wonderful like oh my god i've heard some stuff by her before i was like about it but reading this she has a new super fan second up on this tag is to talk about your favorite sequel of 2021 and considering that i read three sequels it was a pretty easy choice i raised a glass to a chain of iron by cassandra clare second in her last hours trilogy this takes place in an edwardian london focusing on cordelia carstairs james harrendale and the rest of the mary thieves this is exactly what a sequel should be this build on what's already there introduces new subplots it builds in the subplots that are already there and it eventually hypes you up for the third book because oh my god what a cliffhanger i also really appreciate how quickly this series is becoming 40 demons 40 shadowhunter politics and 20 fashion chain of gold was like okay but chain of iron is actually one of my favorites that she's ever written so can't wait for the third one third up is to talk about a new release that you haven't read yet but want to and i just purchased the very beautiful the library of the dead by t l hutu our main character ropa has dropped out of school to become a ghost talker in the streets of edinburgh so she runs around delivering messages from beyond the grave but then the dead start whispering to her that there's something magical afoot and she finds this occult library and plays dice with death and it sounds perfect i'm honoring my scottish roots currently as i drink this delicious gin actually funny story about this is that the last time i was in edinburgh it was in 2019 and when you go into a restaurant i'm expecting to always give id because i look like i'm 16. and i'd order cider and i would order wine i would always get id'd but when i started ordering gin no one would ever id be i always had it ready to be like hello like legality is happening over here um but finally i asked because it was like four or five times that they were just like yeah sure jin i asked one of the waitresses like why won't you id me like you're just you could be serving like a 12 year old gin and she just looks at me and she goes no one underage is drinking gin fair point so yeah scotland doesn't mess around and i'm excited to read about more ghosts in edinburgh occult libraries sign me up for that [ __ ] right that was the first time my camera overheated so you know keep that tally number four is your most anticipated read for the second half of 2021 and i might be the luckiest girl alive because i got an advanced copy of my most anticipated book for this year and that is she who became the sun by shelly parker chan ulan meets song of achilles in a queer retelling about the founder of the ming dynasty sign me the hell up i see this book and i suddenly turn into ariana grande from seven rings where it's like i don't need a bread but i'd be like put it in the bag yeah when i see a toast rack they add up like my stacks yeah dunk book don't put me down for karaoke anytime soon tor you're the greatest thank you so much i'm so excited to have this in my hands and this comes out actually in july number five might get me into a little bit of trouble but it is your biggest disappointment of this year and i'm really sad to say that for me it was what big teeth by rose salvo look i wanted to like this so badly it's this monstrous gothic about this girl who has an incident in her private boarding school and is sent home to this gothic mansion in which she was raised and her family are all these different kinds of paranormal supernatural creatures and with an arrival of a new family member the townsfolk are starting to turn against them again i did not connect with the voice i thought that it was too distant and i didn't really like the character development of the family i felt like she kind of sporadically focused on people and there wasn't a good connecting thread for all of them i wanted her to focus so much more on certain characters and then she just didn't there were some really cool themes in here that i think she should have explored more like oh there's so much potential to this and it just it didn't live up to my expectations i'm really sad about it oh but this next one is going to be much more fun and that is your biggest surprise and my biggest surprise this year for a multitude of reasons is the holo gods that aj rana so back like some amount of time ago the author alex reached out to me being like hey i've seen you online i think you're cool do you want to review a copy of my book and then i saw that it was a paranormal new adult thriller that was set in the forest towns of northern bc which is where i'm from and it has to deal with dreamwalkers and sort of werewolves and serbian mythology and i was like uh if that's checking all my boxes send that my way and i read it and it was really good and i really enjoyed our how morally gray our characters are especially our main male character who's like sort of a love interest and now alex and i are like kind of friends at least i think we are hi i know you watch my videos hello dm me on instagram let me know for friends so i would highly recommend that you go and check adriana out i know the sequel the echoed realm is coming out soon number seven is your new favorite author and that is their very difficult question however after giving it a good think the person that came to mind is lyndon a lewis who is the author of first sister this was a kind of a new blank slate author that i picked up on a whim because it sounded cool and i am i am blown away by the intricacies of politics and space colonization and queerness and gender issues that are in this book so this follows first sister who is a comfort woman in space who is given to captain saito ren as a gift but also as a spy and saito ren herself is a general that won this special battle in this space war against the martians and the earthers and the people on venus and mercury but then little solutions has this vendetta against saigon for possibly killing someone he loved but then it's like the government gets involved who's actually the bad guy whose side are we on and then some queers in space which you know you know i love my space gays you know just write like rachel loves gays in space and then you take that to the bank and that check will cash oh i just had to let my camera cool for 20 whole minutes cheers to summer where even are we we're at number eight which is to talk about your latest fictional crash now full disclosure i'm not somebody who gets a lot of fictional crushes that being said gill from the infinity courts by kemi dawn bowman gil is a character that really stood out to me i mentioned this all over my social medias but if you don't know what this is imagine if siri took over heaven so this is about a girl named nami who dies in a freak accident but when her consciousness goes to heaven it turns out that the smart device of earth called ophelia has taken over this waiting place heaven and she ends up joining with a band of rebel humans who still like have their souls and are trying to take down this ai who rules over the afterlife it's bananas the way this afterlife is set up is that there's multiple courts of ais and our love interest guild comes from war so he has gone literally through hell in this ai afterlife and now has joined the rebellion to try and take them down from the inside though i was skeptical at the beginning of this book because this whole enemies to lovers thing was like a little intense and i was like oh okay interesting not quite sure how you're gonna come back from stabbing someone he was a little harsh at first but i will say that he redeemed himself quite well in this and at the very end i'm just like girl my sweet baby dead cinnamon roll oh my god he's involved in the plot twist of the year in this book oh my god he is just he's such an interesting character and i really hope that they go further into that but i don't know if this is a standalone or not and if it is i'm gonna act up i not only enjoyed watching nami's development but gil's development and their development together especially because he and nami are very opposite in the way they think about approaching these ais watching her break down his walls and watching him encourage her into being a stronger person also apparently he's still a snack even in the afterlife and uh you know i love me a pretty boy a very similar in tone but not similar in personality at all whatsoever number ten wait number ten or number nine [ __ ] number nine number nine is talk about your new favorite character and this is a character that immediately came to mind like i was writing down some like point form notes to talk about and as soon as i got to this question he popped into my head and that is jovis from bone shard daughter by andrea stewart i raved about this book in actual oh which there's a couple videos i'm interested in one of them will be up there if editing racial remembers and guests are [ __ ] together this is a very unique and immersive asian inspired folklore fantasy world that has some of the coolest world building where the emperor uses magic to create these boneshard constructs where he carves commands into bone and then like makes creatures with them and one of our main characters is named jovis and he is a reluctant smuggler who ends up getting a really fun pet he starts off as this slightly disgraced sailor and has also been like discharged kind of unhonorably from the military but then he's soft-hearted when one of their islands just sinks and then suddenly this takes him on this whole journey of reluctantly smuggling out children to stop the bone charred constructs truly everybody in this book has an amazing strong arc but i personally really like jobus because of the way that he he waffles he's not always trying to do the right thing he's trying to do what he wants to do and sometimes that is the right thing but his morals are always in a good place i like that he makes mistakes and is kind of trying to bargain for himself but also people that he's lost and the new people that he learns to love again plot twist at the end of this is like i'm gonna rob a bank andrea stewart if you could just like hurry up on that sequel that'd be great number 10 is supposed to be the book that you cried the most over this year and i feel like i haven't cried at anything this year like i've been a stone cold [ __ ] in 2021. wait wait wait wait wait wait nope that's this bad boy the audacity of leigh bardugo to make me feel so many deep things for people that don't exist a true magician golf claps for leigh bardugo i have some flamin hot opinions on this book like i didn't love it as much as i thought i was going to i thought there were some plot lines that kind of got picked up and dropped a little too fast especially considering that this is a final end book not only of the king of scars duology but kind of of the grisha verse as we know it i know that there has been confirmed a third six of crows i don't know how to feel about that yet this book gets real dark and that being said i did cry a whole lot about this specifically for nina and honey man this book feels like nikolai's monster has his claws in your heart like oh my god i think i was crying every other page in this oh it's the third time my camera's overheated and so am i please don't look at my eyebrows so let's get back on track number 11 is a book that made you happy book that made me very happy this year is the house in the cerulean sea by tj clune i know there's been some talk about tj clune recently but after hearing what the indigenous community has said on both sides of the argument i have decided that i will continue to support him i think everybody has read this book already but in case you have it linus baker is our main character who is a caseworker in the department of charge of magical youth and one day he is assigned to go visit the house in the cerulean sea which is a boarding house for the most dangerous and unique of magical children along with their headmaster arthur parnassus which oh what a name and it's this wonderful lovely big found family book about learning to accept yourself and learning to accept others discovering family and unexpected places and falling in love with other people and yourself and the world that you live in this is just like a queer hug of a book and i love it so much but now that i think about it i think i'd cried over this book too but it was happy tears this time is this book perfect no but is this book a book that made me very happy yes number 12 on this tag is your favorite book to movie adaptation this year and truly was there any other answer god the shadow and bone series pulled a full six of pros and just stole my heart this set the bar extraordinarily high for any other kind of adaptation and i'm so happy watching this series with the detail that they put into this was mind-boggling can really tell that the cast did their homework on their characters and like wanted to be there and everybody involved was so enamored by this universe and it comes across on film so beautifully the costumes the magic the swagger of all of these characters coming to life on screen was so wonderful and while yes there are certainly issues with it and it's particularly behind the scenes it seems like they are trying to remedy that i'm not sure how much that is performative but fingers crossed that this actually goes through and that they listen to the fans feedback because it just got renewed for season two and damn i am excited okay we got two more oh all right camera you can do it number 13 is talk about the favorite review that you've left this year and in case any of you didn't know i do have a traditional book blog which is like down below who knows wordpress.rachel's blog dot hashtag blog while i've reviewed so many on youtube we're going to reign this in and just talk about the books that i've actually written like physical reviews for on that blog so i want to talk about lore by alexandra bracken this is also one of the only ways that i could work this book into this tag and i absolutely needed to because damn oh january 2020 releases came out swinging with this baby you know i love me some bloody greek mythology and alex bracken delivered every seven years there is an aegon where the greek gods come to earth in human form and there are multiple families of god killers and they are all trying to kill one of these gods so that they can absorb their powers the main character lore is the last of her family line and when the new aegon is announced uh one of her childhood friends who she thought dead is surprisingly not dead and a wounded god appears on her doorstep asking for help this was fast this was brutal this was bloody as hell and i i really enjoyed that and i think i said some pretty good things in my review so check that out down below um i definitely made some joke about like making out after cutting someone's thumbs off which like hot am i right actually don't answer that there's something i never thought i'd have to specify not wanting in a relationship but here we are so if that sounds interesting check out this book and then go check out that post oh my god we're at the last question we can do it here we go and lastly number 14 of the mid-year book freakout tag for 2021 is to talk about the most beautiful book that you have bought this year and without a doubt my mind immediately went to the ones we're meant to find by joan he the artist of this cover whose name i'm definitely going to mispronounce i'm so sorry i tried to find how to say this online and i absolutely cannot find it um but it is a cut a dog do if editing rachel remembers i will link their site down below because they have the coolest surrealist naturalistic but still human type of art that i find so stunning if you know this book you know this cover is perfect because it's about two sisters in this sci-fi universe where one of them goes missing ends up on a deserted island with no memory other than the fact that she has a sister and the other sister is trying to find her other sister then it takes place in this future green space dystopia that hovers above earth and earth is like really [ __ ] up environmentally toxic and awful and there's stuff about like ai's and cryogenic freezing tubes and doctors and disease and the way that we look at long life and environmentalism like global warming this is a really deep and unique sci-fi that i really enjoy i like how we go back and forth between the two perspectives and i just i love this cover it is just oh my gosh it is so beautiful it perfectly encaptures this book and with that we are done i got my big fan going and i got my little fan going it is way too warm in here oh my god it's 9 30. my camera has overheated four times in today's video hence why it's taken me over an hour and a half to film this damn thing hey vancouver um if you could just like close that portal the hell that you opened to make it this warm that would be great like i get it i wear a lot of black i have red hair and collect animal bones like it would seem like i would be right at home in hell um but my skin's too pale i burn too easily please leave down below if you have your own answers for this tag and i will also leave uh the questions that i just went over in the link below the bio below i'm so sorry my brain has fully melted i'm gonna do a longer intro but i feel like i'm drowning in my own sweat so i'm just we're just gonna leave it at that you know where i clicked like the video you know where i click to subscribe i hope you guys are all having a nice day wherever you are and i will see you all next week bye
